Chapter Four: High Stakes

Status
Not open for further replies.
Mario lets out a small snarl to himself as he gets hit by the Regult. Damnit! Can't let these bastards keep plinking away at my armor. Got to start to thin their numbers out. Targeting the Pod that hit him, Mario kicks in his jump jets, kicking him up into air and over to land behind the burning aerospace fighter. As he is in the air, the tanker then wraps up his motion by transforming back into Battloid mode as he lands.

Toph is torn between trying to kill the Beastmaster and the need to eliminate the hoard of Regult Battle Pods in front of them. She sees that Mario is now behind some solid cover, hoping to keep his mecha in one piece. That helps the young Lieutenant to make up her mind. She keeps ducked down behind her own cover as much as possible as she locks onto the Beastmaster with three of her Plasma Mini Missiles. Here's to hoping that they actually hit the bastard!

As Mario hurriedly raced across the hangar to the burning space fighter, he got there perhaps with the realization that, for once, fighting giant enemies actually worked to a human's advantage, especially when taking cover behind one of their enormous ships! Nearly 40 feet tall and nearly 60 feet long, the blasted Gnerl made for a terrific place to take heavy cover with. Though the situation and flames provided a penalty to Mario's shots, it was definitely worse for the half-dozen Zeki-Zentraedi Battle Pods trying to kill him!

* * *

Toph's trio of plasma mini-missiles streaked like fiery birds across the battlefield toward the Beastmaster.

"Ha ha ha," he chided Toph cruelly. "A pitiful micronian pilot in an old, banged-up mech! How desperate you must feel! Ha ha ha!"

Unfortunately, the Zeki-Zentraedi elected for the smart decision concerning Toph's missiles. The half-Meltrandi saw a dazzling display of shimmering chaff and bright flares light the airspace like a protective sheen against her volley...

Chaff and flares have a 75% chance to baffle incoming missiles.

I rolled an 83!

KA-BOOM! The missiles struck the Beastmaster! A snarl of rage could be seen on his angry face!

Toph replies in Zentraedi, "I am hardly a typical Micronian! My mother is Zyorna, a Meltrandi pilot of the Queadluun-Rau powered armor! Perhaps, if you ask me very kindly, I will give you some piloting lessons on how not to rely upon flares and chaff when your own skill probably would have done better in defending yourself! I usually take no pleasure in killing, but this time, I will enjoy watching you burn!"

If the Zentraedi had a word in their language for "bitch", Toph could bet her very last dollar the Beastmaster would be using it right now.

Her volley knocked him flaming through the air forcing him to right himself. He did so with a silent and bruised grimace of rage.

It became Elinor's turn to take action..

"I really gotta learn me some Zentraedi sometime," Elinor muttered under her breath. Judging from context and tone, the taunts were flying as thick as the projectiles, but darned if she knew what anyone was actually saying. She shook her head and turned her attention to more important things -- like the aforementioned projectiles, and the people who were shooting them. "Nice shot, Toph!" Elinor called over the nexus. She kept her own guns aimed at the Beastmaster. He couldn't dodge every shot she sent his way, could he? "Fox five!"

He couldn't dodge every shot she sent his way, could he?

Unfortunately for the Wild Cards, some shots did not require dodging...

In Elinor's enthusiasm to put the crosshair on the target, she did what many a rookie combat pilot did - focused too much on the target and not enough on what her mech was doing. In an effort to thrust the giant mechanical Valkyrie in its hybrid-mode down to get a good bead on the Beastmaster's face, 2nd Lt. Hall descended rapidly...

A good 200 foot drop should do it, or so her mind said, and down she and Cera went and top speed! 200 feet straight down!

Except she was only 100 feet off the ground...

CLAAAANG!!

The Valkyrie struck the floor, both of the veritech's feet landing simultaneously in a perfect two-point landing at high speed. The force was terrific enough to alter her aim. She saw the massive black GU-11 gun pod aim vertically instead of horizontally. Then she saw the flash of its cannon-fire.

BRRRRRRT!! CRAAASH!!

Elinor and Cera were momentarily bounced around in the cockpit like a pair of marbles in a hyperactive child's tin can...

Briefly, the T.A.S.C. Test PIlot senses swam as she lost her orientation. The Southern woman's steely nerves kept her frosty and far away from panicking, but when Elinor looked in her rear-view camera, she saw Cera looking back at her with those red-brown eyes locked in a stare along with a combination of feelings playing across her Ura-Meltrandi features. Cera's first expression seemed to show a concerned, "Oh wow, are you all right?!" combined with a stunned, "Have you suddenly lost your mind?"

In that moment, both of them looked up just in time to see a number of large, shadowy objects fall straight on them accompanied by the crashing and smashing sounds of mega-damage glass bouncing off all over the Valkyrie, scarring and savagely wrecking the paint along the tops of the cockpit, body, and wings but otherwise causing no damage. A huge trail of glass surrounded her mech and made a long trail with her Valkyrie right in the middle of the mess.

It was then that Elinor realized where all that glass had come from...

Her GU-11 burst had just shot out one of the vast aerospace hangar's ceiling lights. Above them, the room had gone somewhat dark, but not dark enough to hide them from the scene. Everyone, friend and foe alike, had witnessed the whole thing.

* * *
I will post the baddies' turn later. =)

"Minoan War" by Koto

Unfortunately, this fumble also served to bring back the Beastmaster's bragging. He bellowed, "Hah! Bumbling, cowering micronians! Perhaps you would be better off shooting each other!! Ha ha haaaaa!"

The wargoth-missile launcher on his shoulder whirred as he directed it toward a new target. This time, it was Mario. "Oho! Are you trying to hide, coward? Let us see where that gets you!"

Inside the polyphonic nexus, the Wild Cards could feel Cera's temper rising through the change of tone in her voice. "Mario, he is trying to lure you! Do not fall for it! Continue to stay alive, male!" It was the first time the Ura-Meltrandi had used the word without even the slightest sort of negative connotation. It was almost as if she had used the word, "ally."

The Beastmaster's shoulder launcher barked again. This time it was not aimed at a veritech, but instead something closer. The angle and distance were completely wrong for Cera to attempt to intercept the shot.

FOOM!

WHAM!

"Mario!" Cera warned. "He has shot a wargoth-missile on the other side of the Gnerl you are hiding behind! It is trying to crawl its way around your right side! Beware!"

Meanwhile, the half-dozen Zeki-Zentraedi Battle Pods aimed at Mario as he tried to take cover behind the damaged Gnerl fighter. The cloned grunts lit the aerospace hangar with shining lances of particle beam destruction. If the Beastmaster's words or the threat of the bomb-laden wargoth flushed Mario from his cover, his butt would indeed be hanging in the breeze...

As for the Beastmaster, he returned the favor of Toph's missile attack with a rapid-fire burst from his chest-mounted grenade launcher. As the cannon fired at Toph's Ajax, the Zeki-Zentraedi screamed hatefully at her.
"DIE IN FLAMES, WEAKLING!!"

"Thanks for the warning, Cera! Lets see if I can't deal with that little bastard without getting myself blown up." Doing his best to keep the burning aerospace fighter between him and the Regults, Mario tumbles in his Spartas backwards to open up some room between him and the exploding Wargoth-missile thing, keeping his gun pod up and ready to fire on the critter as it comes into view.

Tiny beads of sweat start to form on Mario's forehead as he struggles to keep himself alive. I have got to take out that Wargoth-thing before it can attach itself to me and go boom. Problem is, it might leave me exposed to the fire from those Regults. With a course of action in hand, Mario will do an acrobatic tumble to the opposite side of the Gnerl that he ran behind, getting some good distance away from the burning wreck. Dropping down to one knee, he raises up the Eu-11 and searches for the crawling thing, planning on lighting it up with aimed fire.

Toph feels a burning desire in her to finish off the Beastmaster, but another part of her is more calm and analytical. If that Wargoth attaches itself to Mario's mecha, he's going to be in a world of hurt. I need to help him first! Trying to keep her Ajax behind cover for as long a possible, Toph will delay her shot until the Wargoth is visible. She'll then engage it with her arm mounted pulse laser, hoping to take it out before it can become a threat to the Tanker.

The luck sure didn't seem to be on their side this fight. No matter; they'd just have to work around luck. The wargoth-missiles were bad enough Elinor didn't want anyone get hit by even one, and so she, too, chose to wait until the one on Mario got where she could see it so that she could take her own shot at it. Between her, Toph, and Cera, somebody ought to get a good bead on it before the thing reached its target!

As Toph nimbly evaded the Beastmaster's barrage of grenades, Mario did his very best to avoid the Battle Pods' particle beam fire with a combination of dodging and using his cover to the utmost. The blasts lit his cockpit and HUD like a fireworks show and the sounds of the blasts striking were like overhead thunder, but while the aerospace fighter took a very serious beating and the flight deck shuddered with every hit, Mario and his VHT emerged unscathed.

But then there came Cera's warning. The wargoth was on the ground and after him.

Just to keep us all on the same page, thus ends everyone's third attack of the round. Here begins everyone's fourth attack of the round.

Despite the clear and obvious danger of being caught out in the open against half a dozen Battle Pods, Mario left the cover of the burning Gnerl after witnessing firsthand the destructive power the wargoth-missiles contained upon detonation.

With patience mostly born of necessity, the Wild Cards changed their attack pacing, aimed their weapons, and waited. Then the Wild Cards saw it! Toph and Elinor had never gotten a good look at a bomb-laden, toothy, reptilian-thing scampering about before. The thing was as aggressive as it was ugly. It leaped and bounded with ferocity and dangerous agility.

The moment Mario saw it, he fired off a five-shot stream of blazing laser fire only to have aimed too far to the right. The lasers scorched the battered Gnerl. Then Toph aimed with all of the precision the half-human could muster, only to see her blast of ionized energy ripple right past the oncoming beast that moved like an intelligent canine. After her hammering fumble, Elinor righted her GU-11 Gun Pod and targeted the wargoth as it eagerly closed the distance with Mario. Her shot was true, however barely, but the wargoth and its deadly ordnance saw the shot and leaped high and into the air causing Elinor's well-intended rounds to miss completely.

In the air, the wargoth opened its terrible maw. Mario could see the thing was outfitted for its role. So close was it now as it descended upon the tanker that he could see it was outfitted with "shoes" that seemed to have flat plates on the bottom. His education told him their purpose. Magnetism! They would attach to his hull!

KUHBOOOOM!!

A sudden blast filled the room. A shockwave followed, ripping apart the air in one great scream of explosive intensity, momentarily shaking the battleground. Instinctively, Mario found himself raising his shields as a monstrous blast nearly enveloped him. He and his VHT were pushed backwards some 30 feet from the blast... yet his HUD was not screaming bloody murder and he had felt none of the expected impact.

As debris fell bounced harmlessly off of his mech like a brief steel rain, Mario looked up and saw the exploding bits of the wargoth-missile...

...and the light smoke trail coming from the wing of Elinor's currently-grounded Valkyrie.

A shout rose over the polyphonic nexus. It was Cera. She raised her fist and exclaimed mightily. "Take that, you... you..." What had Elly Nor called them a moment ago? "....jerk-face!!"

* * *

Now begins the Zeki-Zentraedi's fourth attack of the round. Cera used up her action to shoot Mario's wargoth-missile leaving this next missile free to find its mark. Remember what you've learned about these guys, Gang! =)

The Beastmaster chuckled, this time at Toph. "Hah! Zyorna, you say? You call yourself both micronian and Meltrandi? Well, fool, I have caught you in your obvious lie! There is no interaction between micronians and Meltrandi! Thus, you are a simpleton of a micronian attempting to confuse and frighten me! I see through you, honorless one, and now you pay with your life!"

Inside the polyphonic nexus, Cera came upon a discovery and briefly explained. "Ah! This Zeki ship, or at least this Beastmaster, has apparently not yet made contact with any of Lord Dolza's Zentraedi! There are some matters this crew remains ignorant of."

The wargoth-cannon on the Beastmaster's shoulder belched again. With no one to intercept it, it flew flawlessly at Toph's mech. Meanwhile, the Beastmaster aimed his plasma pistol down on Elinor's Valkyrie and loosed hell. But it was Mario that had the worst of it as, yet again, all six Battle Pods loosed their dual particle beam cannons in an effort to eradicate the stubborn tanker.

Trying to keep his cool, Mario reminds himself that he's been hit in combat before, and he knows that his armor will hold under the withering fire. Rising up from his kneeling position, he braces himself against the impact of the multiple shots coming his way.

"Dog Fighter Extended" again

Mario's cool served him well. Trusting in the protective abilities of his Veritech Hover Tank, he took blasts that would have blown the arms off of many other mecha without a scratch to the tank's main body. During his flight away from the bomb-laden wargoth, one of the Zeki-Zentraedi Battle Pods had shot so poorly as to have struck the Gnerl aerospace fighter though Mario had vacated that cover.

But yet another Battle Pod outdid its squadmate by attempting to use its thrusters to leap over the Gnerl and use its deadly cannons on Mario from above. Luck, however, was not with the pilot. His thrusters fired full blast, but in his eagerness, one of his Battle Pod's feet clipped the top of the Gnerl violently, and the 70-foot tall metal monstrosity topped head-first straight down into the deck with tremendous force. The nimble thing rolled to its feet in combat stance, but otherwise, it did not move.

It did not take a Wild Card to come to the conclusion that the giant pilot inside had rattled his brain so hard that he had likely stunned himself good.

* * *

But Toph soon discovered she had problems of a different kind. With inhuman alacrity, she raised her weapon to blow away the oncoming wargoth-missile, but in her haste, she pulled the trigger too soon and sent her shot low and past the alien creature. It came on. With nothing to stop it, the wargoth slammed against Toph's Ajax. Immediately, she felt the weight of the creature pull her veritech slightly, but she also immediately realized that there had been no explosion.

With a quick look, she saw what was happening. The wargoth was only 15 or so away from her cockpit. It seemed magnetically attached to her Ajax's hull. And the reptilian horror was turning, turning towards her with grinning horrible eyes, a massive row of ugly teeth - and a big fat bomb strapped to its back...

* * *

Elinor saw the triple-blast of the Beastmaster's plasma pistol, but despite her training and best efforts, the burning bolts seared into her Valkyrie's Main Body. The impact rocked her and Cera mercilessly. To her credit, Cera did not cry out like a human pilot might have, but instead gritted her teeth as if she had been punched.

Elinor's HUD politely and vibrantly informed her that her mech had been damaged. The test pilot inside of Elinor begged her to glance at the damage. With that glance, she saw just enough melted hypercarbon and smoke to know her Valkyrie was still holding strong and airworthy. For the time being...

* * *

It was at that moment that Mario, Toph, and Elinor felt a ripple of emotion cross through their minds... It was the polyphonic nexus. A familiar voice in your minds' eyes began to appear rapidly along with words. The voice was motherly, warm, and ever-polite. It was Iris.

Direct connection ordered per War-queen. Consensus in continuity! Movement in motion...

Polyphonic Nexus reestablished in 5 of 6 routes! Commencing communication:

Salutations, Traversers! This One has restored Leader Mack and Mecha Kitten to the Polyphonic Nexus! Leader Mack is suffering from mild brain-burn and mental exhaustion as a result of her traversing with the Zeki-Zentraedi High Control Computer. Reunification of our two teams should occur shortly! This One hopes you are having a wonderful night!

Then a second voice came over. There was weariness, but behind that was a strong will attempting to come back from it with everything she had.

"Come... Come in. Cyg... Cygnus team? Uhhh..."

It was Shirley. She sounded like she had been hit over the head with a hammer. There were feelings of tremendous emotion flowing through her - sudden exhilaration, proud satisfaction, deep gratitude, and a very, very powerful motivation to do something very important, but what that was you could not tell.

It became Mario's turn to act. What does Mario do?

Your characters can shout out a short statement or statements (6 seconds or less) as a free action even though it's not your turn. =)

Mario feels his tank shudder under the impacts of so many shots, trying to reassure himself that there is still plenty of armor between him and the enemy. "Good to hear from you, LT. I'd happily report in, but things are going a bit crazy right now, and I need to focus on not shooting Toph's mecha as I try to save her bacon." Alright Mario. Focus on this shot and make it count!

He spins around to point his Eu-11 at the Wargoth-missile-thing crawling up the side of Toph's Ajax. "Hold still, ma'am. I promise that I won't intentionally hit you."

"We're getting our butts kicked by six Regults and a Beastmaster in a modified MPA suit! This is not going well!" Toph does sincerely hope that Mario's good intentions to 'save' her from the Wargoth won't backfire on her.

Despite Toph's Meltrandi/human reflexes, she was still a woman trapped inside of a giant hypercarbon machine with only it separating her from a ruthless explosion that could quite well take her Ajax out of action and possibly kill her in the process. Toph saw the wargoth climbing up her veritech's torso and directly to her cockpit. Step by step, the creature came on.

Mario aimed his EU-11 laser cannon. What the thing lacked in power, it made up for in accuracy. With training only tankers have, the corporal lit off a five-round burst. The wargoth never saw it coming. All five bolts struck the wargoth squarely. Its head reared back in pain as it disengaged from Toph's Ajax. She had only her reflexes between her and a blast of tremendous magnitude...

Toph has one chance - a P.P.-based saving throw (or a Reflex saving throw if you like the Pathfinder terminology). This means a white d20 roll with her bonus to P.P. as the only modifier unless you can think of something else. Psychie Psychie Let me know in Fat Gandalf's?

Toph felt the blast from the wargoth-missile's fiery detonation from inside her cockpit as her Ajax was hurled back 30 feet. The Ajax veritech's HUD alerted to damage taken and when Toph could see again, she saw her Ajax had small pieces of burning shrapnel all over the main body of her battloid. But the T.A.S.C. lieutenant could take refuge in knowing not only did she escape the fullness of the blast, but Mario's intervention made certain the wargoth's bomb did not detonate where and how the creature wanted. What would have happened then, the Ajax pilot could only guess.

It became Toph's turn to act. What does she do?

Damn! That was too close! I owe Mario a beer when we get back. If it weren't for him . . . Now we have got to stop that Beastmaster. I can't take many more hits like that. With grim determination, Toph squeezes off her last five Plasma mini missiles against the Beastmaster.

As combat flared and blared around her, Toph guided her Ajax's targeting reticle as she tracked the arrogant Beastmaster. She was rewarded by a signal lock. She heard and saw the roaring volley of missiles shake her battloid briefly before they traveled from her machine and at the alien bio-mech.

Almost instantly, the leader reacted to the launch. The airspace inside the hangar lit crazily with the light of flares and twinkling clouds of chaff. Toph's volley penetrated these as if they were not there. The Beastmaster grunted and pulled himself to speedily in a wicked curve, but the missile salvo was not to be fooled.

KA-BOOM!!

Now the Beastmaster and his encaged wargoths were smoking with dreadful damage, but still the Zeki-Zentraedi remained aloft, fuming, in more ways than one.

It became Elinor's turn. What does she do?

In an angry voice, Toph calls out, "I told you I would see you burn! I will laugh as we stand over your broken and bleeding body! The Meltrandi will cannot be stopped by the likes of you!"

Hot damn! Our mild-mannered doctor is getting quite savage in this fight. I guess there is some fire in her from the alien blood after all. "Brilliant shot, Toph! Keep it up!"
