It had been three weeks since humans were integrated in Onyx Academy, interrupting the norm for the vampire population who had known nothing but their kind for centuries. Today was a special day though, one that was supposed to be welcoming and kind hearted towards the new students. The school’s event went as smoothly as the staff expected, sure there were some glares and fang baring, however there was no blood spilled and that in itself was an accomplishment.

What most students were looking forward to though, or most vampires anyway, was Yrsa’s party at the abandoned barn near the end of campus. It was a sort of beginning of the year staple and this year especially, they wanted an escape not only from school, but from the humans that now plagued it. Unbeknownst to the vampires though, some of the vamps who weren’t so hateful had invited one or two humans, but this of course meant that a large group of them would end up attending.

As the barn filled, music began to play and drinks were laid out on the tables surrounding the edges of the old building. Not only drinks, but also blood bags as well as synthetic blood tabs. There were also, though it was frowned upon, a few humans who weren’t students in attendance simply for feeding reasons. They sat in the back corners behind closed doors so no one could see and no one could expose it to a member of the faculty.

Slowly, humans began to arrive and mingle, which threw most vampires altogether. What the hell were they doing here and how did they find out about it? The humans, on the other hand, were intrigued by the party atmosphere, maybe they weren’t so different after all.

Yrsa stared at her phone in disdain. She reread the group message between herself, her dear father, and her most beloved grandmother over and over again. She hated them currently, or as much as any vampire with all the time in the world could hate another. She knew she would be over it by the morning, after a good nights rest, but that didn't mean she couldn't be unhappy at playing hostess to the Onyx Academy students.

Granny: Yrsa it is tradition at Onyx Academy for our bloodline to host the beginning of the year party. I did it, your father did, your uncles and cousins, I mean, is it really so difficult to comply? Please do it for your Granny. It would make myself and the rest of the bloodline happy to see you partaking in our traditions.

Dad: She doesn't deserve a guilt trip, Mother.

Granny: You're my heir, you'd do well to remember it.

Yrsa: You both own castles, even a palace, but you expect me to host a party in a barn?

Dad: You were born in a barn, if that helps.

Yrsa huffed and shoved her phone into the pocket of her dress as she looked up to survey her party. She kept her eyes on the several humans mingling around the room. She didn't know what to think of them being here or at the school, but clearly they had some type of death wish. Her Granny was beside herself that they'd allowed humans into the school at all. Yrsa constantly had to remind the older vampire she was half-human and didn't appreciate the comments, even if she hadn't been raised among humans. Deciding to take a turn around the room, she grabbed a blood bag from the nearest table and began to sip on it. Due to traveling so many centuries with her father, Yrsa grew used to drinking blood more than eating human food. She, of course, partook when needed, but she avoided it when necessary. Her nose wrinkled at the sight of the humans eating the few snacks scattered around the tables. She hadn't adequately prepared for humans to come, but at least, that wouldn't upset Granny. The purebloods were who she needed to worry with pleasing.

She recognized some of the purebloods milling about. She'd seen them at Granny's parties before, or other events in the vampire world. Yrsa couldn't say she was friends with any of them, but she could at least acknowledge their presence, that would make Granny happy at the very least. They could report back to their own families how Yrsa had thrown the barn party of the century, maybe even, millennium. Her eyes, then, wandered towards the alcohol table. While the blood would keep her from growing hungry throughout the night, perhaps the alcohol would loosen her up a bit, but she remembered the last time she drank anything as strong being offered here, and took a step away from the table. The 1920s had been a time of indulgence and both her and her father had over participated with the elite of New York City. She brought the blood bag back up to her lips, draining it before grabbing the tequila bottle and pressing it to her lips. Fuck it, she thought as the liquid burned down her throat along with her century long sobriety.
