Fantasy Adventure Across the Sandseas!

I've been lurking...
been unsure if/how to construct a character.

Are each of us supposed to be individuals seeking this treasure for personal reasons? Or are we all joining a group/crew?
If we're all part of a crew, what kind? Pirates, adventurers, mercenaries, researchers, a random collection of gifted individuals hired to find this treasure by nobles, pirates, or some shady person that appeared out of nowhere? And do we start with a ship? If so, what kind of ship? Big? Small? Are we the crew, or is it crewed by NPCs and we're the "away team"?
Do the hardships come purely from the journey itself, or are we in a race against other groups?
Sandseas and Sand Serpents makes me think we're treating sand like water at times, depending on context. Being able to walk on or sail through it(ala Monster Hunter)? Or is it just the monsters, such as serpents or worms, that are able to(ala Tremors)? Just to confirm. Or is Sandseas just a name?
Would you prefer all characters be at least loosely based on D&D races and classes, or will you be accepting whatever as long as it isn't an obvious godmode mary sue?
How about tech level? Is it steampunk/clockwork/semi-victorian? Is it just medieval with magic airships, and the automatons are scary unknowns? Do characters often have clockwork prosthetics? Monster Hunter tech? Steam tanks? Parachutes? Grappling hooks, harpoon guns, or steam-based jump-packs?
This usually leads to questions about firearms. Classic Pirate Single-shot muskets and cannons? Cowboy-level revolvers, repeaters, and early gatling guns? No classic guns, but fantastical weaponized steam/glue/elemental guns? No guns at all, but a handful a weird gadgets?
Magic level? Is everything powered by it? Does it not exist? Is it fading from use? Hated/Feared? Seen as an equal alternative to tech power? Do science and magic war on each other or coexist and create magitech?
Are you using your own character or just acting as a DM?

Several of these questions are relevant to character creation, or could affect interest. It's important to have a good picture of the world they should exist in.

Let me address your questions

That is up to you, if you and another player or two want to play as having previous alliances es the characters in a guild and are treating this as a group-bonding activity that is fine.

If you want to play as a disgruntled treasure hunter who’s only cooperativing with these buffons because your boss told you to play nice thats also fine

If you’re all in a crew it’ll most likely be drawn from a guild setting. As to who hired you? It’s Captain Javier Jadira the Psionic’s great-great-great-great grandson Janus Jadira

Depending on what kind of characters you make will determine whether you have a ship or not and the size. If there’s a inventor character for example then yes there probably will a ship at your disposal. As too whether you or NPCs man it that also depends on characters made. If there’s a wizard for example who can summon familars to man the ship then NPCs man the ship. Otherwise the ship would be manned by the PCs.

Just from the journey itself unless a PC invites in trouble

The Sandseas as a complete environment is essentially a gianormous crater like the size of the contient of Australia thats filled with sand and such. Back in the times of Captain Javier Jadira the Psionic the edges of the crater had a force field that formed a bubble. At that time all the lands outside the bubble was all neigh-inhabitable from death, diease, and destruction. The intelligent sentient beings of the world had either fleed to the sky and build floating cities or burrowed underground to create massive subterran utopias. But within the bubble was the salvation of the planet: the prized Book of Unfinished Stories protected by the bubble and a magical water lock. Capt. JJ broke the water lock which caused the bubbles to dry out as the water spread to refill and revive the dying planet. After that the place that the bubble once protected became known as the Sandseas due to its strange, magical qualities.

But to the nitty-gritty, parts of the sand are solid, parts of it is like liquid, parts of it are only solid when people are moving on it and if they stop it becomes liquidy and they will sink. So most likely you’ll have to be doing a mix of walking/swimming or be riding a flying ship.

Preferably based on D&D races and classes but if you can adaquently explain your OC then i’ll accept it.

Tech level is magical steampunk but varies between human and nonhuman. There’s just as much reality in an airship as there is in a dragon. Full human PCs and NPCs cannot perform magic thats why technology has advanced to where it is in the world so they can safely co-exist with beings like elves and dwarves and such. Automatons just another form of golems except instead of being made of the traditional stone or brick are made of gears and cogs.. Clockwork prosthetics do exist but are not overly common due to the fact they interfere with magic (the person with the limb cant do magic but there’s no effect on magic used around or on them). No to Monster Hunter or steam tanks. Yes parachutes, harpoon guns, and grappling hooks. No jetpacks.

Classic pirate era pistols and cannons. Most magic beings dont use firearms as their magic reacts negatively to it. Taser guns and harpoons are the most abundant gun types and yes many weird gadgets.

Human civilization is not powered by magic since humans cant use it. Mixed folk (part human part other race) tend to view magic and tech as being equal just different ways to do things. So they coexist and often mix to make magitech.

10 Are you using your own character or just acting as a DM?

That will depend, i’m gonna try to just DM but i might jump in if needed

1. Humans who live in the sky cities and the underground metropolis ie the non-magic able do not tolerate the more monsterous races except the occasional extremely cutsy monster girl. The surface world and those who live within the Sandseas tend to be very pro-sentient races whether more humanoid or monsterous. This is because in the era of Captain JJ mixed races became more abundant and many of Captain JJ’s crew members were of monsterous racial background

GlassRainGerman GlassRainGerman Hey, thanks for the super elaborate answer up there, really cleared out a lot. One question I had was, you mentioned the bubble bursts. So can my character be from somewhere outside the Sandseas, like there just for the treasure? A couple more questions but we can dash it out in the CS.

Yes, most characters will come from outside the Sandseas. And alright we’ll dash out more questions on CS
