Codename: Mocking Jay
Abandoned Warehouse
The echo paused for a moment, before approaching Jay. Kyu pointed at her handler, her head tilting slightly in curiosity, as if asking if the edenis needed help preparing for tomorrow.
Jay tried their best to maintain a look of authority and determination when they turned to Kyu, furrowing their brow with the edges of their mouth pulled tight. However, it was tough. They almost broke at this sudden, unexpected approach. Thinking about how in the past, the lone ECHO simply would retreat to be a recluse in their room. Now, she was taking the initiative. Jay's heart swelled, and tears almost formed in their eyes. More than anything, he wanted to swoop down and give her a big hug. Even if might earn him a swift knock on the head. But he couldn't falter now.
The edenis dug their fists into their sides and stood firmly as they spoke.
"Stop thinking about others for once...!" Jay tried to shout with their meek voice, only managing a squeak. "Even heroes need breaks. Tonight, you'll let me do this one favor for you. We're going to make sure all your gear is in tip-top order! Fighting isn't about just weapons. We need extra subsidiary equipment, and ample supplies too. No complaints! And..." their head lowered a bit, "Who knows how much time we still have together... So let's make the best of it."
In the middle of their pattering speech, their nose began to twitch. It was a faint residual, but unmistakable in salinity. He has caught wind of this smell a handful of times before. In the workshop, there was a fabled piece of equipment. Of its many practical functions, a particular set of armor had also been unwittingly used as a vomit bag on multiple occasions. Most definitely, that was not part of proper RCL equipment handling.
Turning their head, they would see a hobbling, almost meandering figure headed past them. It was one of the RESONATORS from within the meeting room. In the open air, the smell was much more obvious than in the cramped room full of other bodies. The gruff woman showed up at the last possible moment, practically barging through the door. Then, there was that salute. Jay disapproved of the disorderly, frankly, insubordinate behavior, but he wasn't frowning out of judgement. Rather, it was out of worry. There was something oddly sad in the way they walked. Then it clicked. It was the same way they all walked. Pain. They all knew pain.
Though perhaps this one is more physical, than figurative.
The edenis looked at Kyu a moment, bringing forth a slight smile before holding out a hand towards the familiar smelling stranger, "Hi! You're part of our new team. Um. Are you okay...? You look like you're a bit... well, unwell? Hung-over, perhaps. Eh. Just a guess... Do you need water?"
Jay fished around in the many bags strapped to their plated skirt before bringing out a slender metal canteen. It had a layer of cold frost, indicating whatever inside was still fresh.
"Here, umm... You can keep it. Erm. You must be the Hammer. Your armor makes the rounds in our repair bay." Jay said, dusting their hands and making a quick glance over at Kyu. There was a side-to-side motioning with their ears. They then made a disarming smile, and shrugged their shoulders.
Who knows. But let's try and get along.
"We were headed down to the base's armory workshop. As one of the lead mechanics, I have special access to the machinery and tools there. I planned on making last-minute adjustments to our equipment in preparation for tomorrow." Jay says with an upbeat smile, "If you would like, I can do the same for you?"
Jay then glances down at Kyu, as if waiting for their reaction. "Oh, and this is Shrike. Though, I'm sure you already know that, haha."
