it is a known fact that sirens have lilting voices that can pull you away from consciousness and implants the urge to drown into your mind. nothing has ever survived their song, let alone humans.
thousands of years have passed where the humans have hidden from the merfolk. sirens can sustain themselves on animal blood, but all the creatures near water sources have either left or have been killed. with no animals to resort to, the sirens have put their focus on the mortals.
in the years that animals had been plentiful, the sirens sacrificed their victims to the queen, but the queen now finds that she has been offered little to no creatures. the ocean's life force, which is connected to the siren queen, is wavering, as the siren ruler weakens.
a group of skilled and trusted sirens have been sent to befriend and capture the humans, but they find that betraying the humans that they grew to love like family is the hardest part of the mission, when it had meant to be the most simple portion.
a drug, formally named jonesing, is being passed secretly around the black market. failure (jonesing's more casual title) is actually made of mermaid scales, unbeknownst to the user. it grants the human sirenoid traits after each use. the powder is deadly to sirens, despite being made of their scales. a small dose of failure can subdue the siren or knock them unconscious for long periods of time. if a siren takes this powder, they will lose their abilities and the markings that signify their rank.
