    In a world of night, Indigo is the epitome of sunshine. Despite her surroundings and upbringing, Indigo seems to exude brightness and light. She tries her best to be as sweet and kind as possible, especially to newcomers to her world who may not understand what is going on. It took her a while to get used to it, despite growing up in the midst of it, and so she wants to be helpful to those who she may have had a hand in dragging into the world of vampires. Call it guilt, call it genuine kindness, she doesn't care - but what she does care about is that everyone around her is comfortable and not suffering.
    
    With a remarkable passion for life, even an immortal one, Indigo seems to live by the "you only live once" mantra, a bit of irony she ignores. She's always looking for new experiences, always impressed by what humans can do with their time, and she definitely considers herself adventurous. If she's able to explore the human world, she leaps at the chance, doing things from candlemaking to bungee jumping all in one night if she can. The world around her has so much to offer, and she wishes she had enough time to explore it all. Oh, wait! She does! (Theoretically.) Though immortal, Indigo tries not to take life for granted, as you never know, even as a vampire, what might come along to come get you. So she's going to live her life to the fullest if she can help it.

    Indigo Eastwood was born into the vampire world to Louise and Francis Eastwood, a pair of vampires who were eternally (haha) worried about their daughter. As such, they kept Indigo relegated to the indoors of their secluded estate. They tried their best to keep her attentions occupied, be it through books or movies or television shows. And while Indigo loved all of those things, she desperately wanted to explore the outside world that they told her about.
    
    Despite all her begging, though, neither Louise nor Francis allowed her outside, especially during the daytime. The outside world was dangerous, a world populated by a species that would take out vampires if they knew of their existence. While Indigo inherently understood their concerns, she also hated that they got in the way of her fun. But she tried not to complain too much—after all, she loved her parents, and she didn’t want to hurt them after all they had done to protect her.

    By the time she turned sixteen, still a baby for most vampires but a teenager to humans, Louise and Francis took a chance. They gave Indigo access to the family funds and told her to go explore the world. They thought that if she got her “fix” of the human world, she would come back to them more willingly. It was a good attempt at a plan, but what they didn’t expect was that Indigo would love everything about exploring the human world.
    
    Indigo explored as many restaurants, amusement parks, and just about any other human attraction she could around her parents’ estate. She didn’t go too far so she wouldn’t worry them, but as she reached the “official” age of adulthood, eighteen, she started drifting farther and farther. Her parents tried to hide their panic, but they loved to see their little girl so happy as she seemed to be in her phone calls. She was living her life the way she’d always wanted.

    All too soon, the freedom came to an end. Her parents called, informing her of a masquerade ball coming up in which she could choose a human mate. Normally, Indigo wouldn’t have really liked this turn of events, but she couldn’t help but be curious. Romancing a human? This could be her chance to figure out what life beyond her small part of the country was like.
    
    In the end, she agreed to it. The situation was strange, especially considering Indigo herself had been born of two vampires, but she wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to learn more about the human world that she had just barely started exploring.

    Why do people keep telling him he has no neck? He clearly has one. Ryder was asked often as a child if he was related to Nico di Angelo, and he didn't understand why until he read the Percy Jackson books. There is no resemblance between them, clearly, but he'd rather have Nico than his current family.

    Ryder is quite literally that guy. You know the one. Always partying his ass off. Seems to get drunk on the regular. Yeah. That guy. Ryder adores his parties and just about anything that's wild and fun. He makes it a point to try and bring a little more fun into every social gathering. Whether that's by bringing more booze or instigating a drinking game - well, it usually involves alcohol somehow. But he can do other things related to fun! He's a master gamer and will kick anybody's butt in Mario Kart just to pump up the fun.
    
    Yes, Ryder is basically that party boy. But during the daytime, he seems to adopt an entirely different persona. He's quite serious while at work and surprisingly responsible to those he encounters at night. Though he seems to get drunk often, he's always at work the next day with nary sunglasses nor coffee in sight. Even while partying, he's responsible, though that's hard to notice when he's dancing shirtless on the table. Ryder doesn't want to go too far and somehow ruin the rest of his life, which is probably why he doesn't sleep around as much as everyone seems to think he does. While he would surely enjoy having a little more of that fun every once in a while, he does need to save up money. That's very important to him.
    
    Deep down, Ryder is having a crisis. He has no clue where he's going with his life or what he's doing. He should be doing something at this point, right? Probably. Yet here he is, doing none of it. He wants to get out of this lifelong slump, but when life's a party, how do you move on from it?

    Ryder did not spend a lot of time at his house growing up. His parents, Tina and Allen di Angelo, were always leaving him at friends’ houses so they could go out and gamble or drink. He wasn’t sure how they managed to forget him all the time, and his friends’ parents were never able to pin down their whereabouts to do anything about it. Whenever social services visited, Tina and Allen managed to be present and sober at their own house with their son scowling down at his vegetables. Nothing suspicious here, sir!
    
    For the most part, Ryder despised his parents. He wasn’t sure how to process all the feelings he had about them, but he definitely was not fond of them. He had to learn young how to take care of himself and be self-sufficient, at least until he figured out a way to escape the mess. When his parents brought home their friends, he became a maid, almost, cleaning up after them and making sure the house didn’t fall apart. It was a miracle he never got hurt or in trouble considering he was practically taking care of himself.
    
    

    teenage years

    As a teenager, Ryder found an outlet to shed his frustrations: partying. He didn’t commit to it quite so much as his peers did (especially in the drinking department), but it was an excuse to get away from his house and his parents. Adopting their ways worked out in his favor, and he slept over at his friends’ houses more often than he did at his own. Everyone knew his situation and didn’t mind, though they expressed concern about his well-being a time or two.
    
    The goal was to graduate high school at least, and he managed that, even with all his partying. Okay, yes, he was barely passing, but he had never wanted to go to college in the first place. As soon as he was able, he emancipated himself from his parents and moved into an apartment with some high school buddies. Responsible Ryder was officially born.
    
    

    entering adulthood

    Responsible Ryder got two part-time jobs to help pay the rent and other bills, and he began his life as a daytime working man and a nighttime partier. He went to less parties than he used to, but he was still able to find a good time. Anything to forget about his parents and the life he left behind. His reputation as the party boy grew, and he preferred that to the guy who was to be pitied for his horrible home life.
    
    Out of the blue, he received an invitation to a different sort of party. He wasn’t sure what it was about, and he’d never been to an actual masquerade ball before, but who was he to pass up another party? He worked and worked until he earned a day off to prep for the party, not knowing anything about the real situation behind it.

    There were many terrible things that came out of the 1920s, but it gave the world jazz music. Aurora loves the music of this era and will usually play it from her bedroom on old record players she’s found over the years. She’s quite fond of the stylings of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and Ethel Waters.

    Aurora was raised to speak when spoken to and mind her manners when it came to those she was interacting with. Many have started mistaking her for being a shy and reserved being. But for the most part she just waits until she’s been acknowledged before speaking up. She sometimes has a hard time understanding her place in a conversation or a group. She’s never been a social butterfly, sometimes preferring to listen than speak, but still enjoys being around others.
    
    Her parents have always described her as being an intuitive child. She’s always been able to have a gut feeling about a situation and that has steered her where she needs to go. She’s never been able to quite explain it to others. Perhaps it’s just a byproduct of her vampirism.
    
    Having an immortal life means that Aurora has a lot of time for planning her future. But she’s never been the kind of person who needed the details and prefers to look at the greater picture. When it comes to things she truly cares about, she’ll always make time for the little things. Aurora tends to get lost in her own world and has ideas and dreams she wishes could be real. She’s always wanted to find love like her parents and has been unsuccessful every time. She still hopes one day to be lucky. Perhaps the right person is waiting out there for her.

    Aurora was fortunate enough to be born a vampire, not bitten later in life. Born at the beginning of the 1900s she got to experience many of what the “roaring 20s” had to offer. There were some pretty horrible things to come from this decade. The prohibition, segregation, the start of the great depression, organized crime. The list goes on with much of the nation not faring much better. But Aurora found that the night life during this time, with small jazz bands playing in speakeasy’s, was the perfect fit for her. She often went alone for a drink (not that alcohol works when you’re a vampire) and to enjoy whoever was playing on the little stage.
    
    She met many men during her outings. One man, named William, would dance the night away with her. They would often stay out late discussing what they wanted for their lives. At a very young age, Aurora thought she had found the perfect man for her. But once he found out who she really was it all ended. And this would be a pattern for Aurora for the rest of her immortal life. Her parents had encouraged her to find a man like her. Someone who would live forever in the shadows of the night. At least he would understand the hardships of immortality with an undying thirst for blood. But she couldn’t do it. She always believed the person for her would understand no matter what. Forever is a long time to have your heart broken repeatedly. And eventually, Aurora stopped trying and began shutting herself in her room with nothing but her music.
    
    Her parents had certainly had enough of this attitude. When the families began planning a masquerade they had hoped she would come around and finally find someone. After all, they were from an era where it was seen as scandalous to not be married. She almost said no. She almost packed her things and ran to avoid having to have her heart broken once more. But when her parents told her it could be anyone, no longer caring if they were human or not, she decided that maybe this was her chance. Maybe now she could finally find the person she’s dreamed about.

    Wes has always wanted a dog. Ever since he was a kid he’s wanted one. He used to beg his parents all the time to just…let him go to the shelter and bring one home. They always said no. He hoped when he was living on his own he would be able to do just that. But his job hasn’t allowed for much time to care for another living creature. And he doesn’t want to commit unless he can give his all.

    Many would believe that the profession Wes is in had led him to be cold, uncaring and very distant. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, working with the dead made him much more open and compassionate. His father had raised him on the understanding that the only way the family business would be successful is by showing love and understanding to all families who walked through their doors. It was a hard concept to understand but something he grew into. It doesn’t matter who he’s speaking with, Wes will treat you like a longtime friend or a close family member. He’ll tell you it’s his default personality, or his “work self”. However, outside of work, it’s still the same. Wes just deeply cares for others, living or dead.
    
    His job does take a bit of a toll on him, and people will comment that sometimes off the clock his normally happy, caring and softer self can seem to be lost in a sense. As if he’s present but only physically. People can tell when he’s had a difficult case because it’s almost like the switch has been turned off. While he tries very hard to keep work separate from personal, it’s difficult when you’ve been around it for 25 years of your life. He’ll try very hard to put a smile on his face and tell you it’s nothing, but those who know him incredibly well know it’s a facade.
    
    Wes can be described as loyal, caring, outgoing, organized and conscientious. All traits that have made him a great mortician both in the preparation room and on the funeral home floor. Some would question how he can continue to do such a mentally draining job. He’ll just shrug and tell you it’s all he knows and he wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

    Wes, like most morticians, was born into a family business. The Walter and Bryant funeral home was the most used home in the county for how long it had been around and the excellent service his family has provided. And he grew up around death. Family, friends, strangers in the family funeral home. It was to the point as a child that it no longer bothered him. He knew from a very young age that this was something that happened to everyone. We all live, and we all die someday. It wasn’t something to be afraid of, but something that was meant to be celebrated. His parents had planned to try to keep him away from most of this when he was born. They simply didn’t want to risk traumatizing him with such a thing. But it became too hard to avoid.
    
    Wes went to high school knowing he was going to continue into the family business. His parents had let him know he could do anything he wanted, but he always felt like it was the right career path for him. His first job was scheduling meetings for his parents with clients who had lost loved ones. And that was the stepping stone into everything else. His dad would eventually have Wes assist with setting up the viewing rooms and putting together any slide shows or displays for families. Upon graduating high school he went off to mortuary school for a formal degree, despite his parents saying it wasn’t necessary. He learned the arts of restoration, embalming and some of the financials involved in running a home. And after two years of schooling he was ready to start helping his parents.
    
    It wasn’t uncommon for his family to be invited to certain gatherings. There were conventions and speaking engagements for other funeral home directors to network and learn from each other. So when an invitation for a “masquerade” came in the mail, it wasn’t too out of the ordinary. If anything, being invited to something so formal made Wes question if it was even sent to the right person. He had discussed with his parents if he should even attend and if it would leave them short handed. But they seemed alright with a night out. After all, what harm ever came from attending a formal engagement?

    Tori is an only child, born to Madeline and Henry Zabielski, two high school sweethearts who had their whole lives in front of them when they got pregnant. Despite this, they were excited to welcome their baby girl into the world, and wanted to do everything they could to be the best possible parents for her. Sadly, that wasn't what fate had in store for them. Madeline died giving birth to Tori, which left Henry broken up inside. He didn't know how to deal with suddenly being a single parent, but he still wanted to try. Still, the man had to make a living and provide for him and his daughter.
    
    Unfortunately, losing Madeline was alot harder on him than he ever thought it could have been. He couldn't keep a steady job, and started drinking more to deal with the stress. Tori ended up taking on an almost motherly type role, taking care of him and herself at the same time. She didn't have someone to help her with her homework or projects or even make sure she had dinner. She had to figure all of that out on her own. She and her father moved around often, never seeming to find a place to settle for more than a year at a time, if they were lucky. More often than not, Tori had to sacrifice her own wants to keep the man on track.     Monty was born in Ashborough, a small town in North Carolina. He was the second in the Jackson family, born a few years after his older brother Derrick. Derrick was always the brother who had everything going for him: he was cute and only got more attractive as he got older, he was smart, he was good at sports and good at everything to do with the opposite sex. Even from a young age, it was clear that he and Monty were polar opposites. Monty preferred to spend time in his room playing games and being on his computer, while Derrick wanted to go out and play. When they did get Monty outside, he was usually picking up rocks or poking at bugs.
    
    Thankfully, somehow, Monty did manage to make a few friends in Ashborough. Things were fairly normal in the small town, but tragedy struck when he was in his sophomore year. His brother disappeared, and though they searched for him, he was presumed dead. Sadly, life went on. He was at a huge loss, not having his older, more confident brother around. And so, when he got the invitation to the party in the mail, it was only the thought of what Derrick would do that made him decide to go. Wanting to try and live up to Derrick's reputation for at least one time in his life.

    Rowan Whitelace was born an only child, her relationship with her parents was average at best and weak at worst. She was a good kid; did everything asked of her. She graduated high school, went to college, got a minimum-wage job… you know how that goes. But even with everything planned to a T, she never seemed to get very far. Every avenue led to nowhere and with every failure, the idea of what she truly wanted in life crumbled into nothing. She was nothing more than a girl working a retail job, wasting the days away with a false sense of happiness, and something in her knew that too.
    
    The night before her 28th birthday was when everything changed. It was almost midnight when she finally left work, having just finished the closing shift later than usual. She made the trek down the street to the parking garage to climb into her car and head home, but when she reached her beat-up old Honda, she wasn’t alone. A stranger in an odd suit with a black bowler hat and a cane stood leaning against the trunk of the car, watching her with hunger in his eyes. A scuffle and a blackout later, followed by whispers and promises of “power”, she woke up on the pavement alone with a throbbing headache, blood dripping from her neck, and a sore jaw. She was scared out of her wits, not caring whether or not he stole anything from her. She just wanted to go home and crawl into bed.
    
    The drive home was hard as waves of nausea rushed through her, she could taste blood in her mouth, and she fought the urge to vomit into her lap the entire way home. Rowan white-knuckled the steering wheel at every red light and stop sign, clenching her jaw shut as she rode out the pain. She tried her hardest to keep her cool, but when she went to slam her car door shut after arriving home, the glass of the window fracturing like a sheet of ice. Everything crumbled from there. What a shitty start to a birthday, right? She spent the next week hiding in her room, shying away from the daylight and freaking out at the lack of a reflection in her bathroom mirror. She could only use her sense of touch and the sight of her extremities to assess her bodily changes, feeling two sharp fangs in her mouth and seeing the paleness of the skin on her hands. She knew deep down what she was now, and she denied it for as long as she could, wondering if maybe it was just a delusion from some kind of illness. But then, there was the bloodlust. She spent hours of those few days under her blankets, shutting the world out as she trembled with a gnawing hunger in her stomach. Eventually, she snapped. She pulled on some clothes and shrugged on her jacket, leaving her house and wandering into the night.
    
    Something in her told her what to do, and it felt so easy. Something she never really noticed when she was human, was that vampires? They were everywhere. Every strip of sidewalk in the city belonged to someone, but in her hunger-induced frenzy, she didn’t pay attention to the scents of each territory. She didn’t need to think about what to do, how to do it, or the moral aspects of feeding. Pure instinct drove her now, and it didn’t take long for her to find prey. She doesn’t remember who it was, she thinks it was a woman, but the details are all still fuzzy to her. She was in the middle of feeding, however, when she was ripped away from her meal and found herself face-to-face with the one who turned her. He was amused to find their paths crossed again, and he decided to take pity on her in a unique way, despite her fervent refusal.
    
    He took her in for a while, eventually revealing himself to her as William Beckett. He brought her meals, which came in the form of hypnotized thralls, and she would always refuse to eat. He grew tired of trying to get her to feed and eventually resorted to hypnotizing her so she wouldn’t die. After each session, she’d feel so confused and sick, spending the next few hours dry heaving to get the taste out of her mouth. It was almost two weeks or so of her being under his care before he told her anything about what he wanted with her; he had an entire gang of vampires under his control, and she was just another step in his plan to take control over the city. The next step? Take her as his date to an upcoming masquerade.
    
    She’s not sure what’s in store for her now, but one thing is certain: she will defect from him at the ball, by any means necessary.

    Elias Carter was the eldest of four brothers, born to a wealthy English family overseas more than a century ago. His father died when he was a child, making him the man of the estate without warning. Any personal aspirations he may have had were thrown out in favor of caring for his mother and younger brothers, which he took to happily. Through diligent study and advising, he grew into a handsome young man with more affluence than his peers. He was prideful and brash, the power he had in the communal aspects of his life having gone to his head. Life went on for almost two more decades, and he was happy.
    
    As an adult, Elias was known for having a way with the fairer sex, and while most of his relationships didn’t last long, he eventually met his match. A beautiful woman with long, chocolate locks and the deepest pools of amber appeared seemingly from nowhere, her name meaning very little to his community. But she was wealthy, and she was a conversationalist. She captured the attention of anyone that was in the room with her, including his own. They hit it off, quickly becoming a pair in no time at all, and even engaged. Everyone believed that they were perfect for each other, and he agreed, his happiness blinding him from his bride’s ulterior motives. She was a vampire, and she had chosen him to be her next victim.
    
    They had a beautiful wedding, and when it came time to consummate the marriage, she struck. She bit down on his neck and drained him of his lifeforce, almost leaving him for dead alone on their bed, if not for his tragic cries begging her to stay. She was a black widow of sorts, but somehow he’d managed to captivate her too. Having a change of heart, she bit into her wrist and fed him drops of her blood, sealing his fate before she faded away into the night never to be seen again. The act brought him back from the brink of death, and he went through the transformation alone, eventually waking the next evening surrounded by the desecrated bodies of his staff. They had been drained of their blood, and he didn’t want to think of his role in their deaths. Confused, broken-hearted, and afraid, he took what money and belongings he had in the house and disappeared. He boarded a boat to the States and didn’t look back.
    
    A century passed, and Elias learned to control his condition, disconnecting himself from his victims and enemies to survive. The vampire community knows him for his wealth and lone-wolf aura, and they steer clear of him. As of late, no one has seen him for more than a decade, and no one questions it. Though, with the arrival of an invitation to a grand masquerade, that is subject to change.
