In the ship just a basic AI, infused with a portion of his creators soul, very small amount though. In comparison to Aki, he doesn't feel a wide range if emotions nor can he really hold his own opinions or thoughts for very long.
The original James is a human Niq accidentally infused with her ship when she tried to save him from the nuclear war going on on Earth at the time. She built him a body, but he put it upon himself to infuse himself with every Umbrae ship, allowing them to reach a closer human lvl than most navi AI.
