Kaerri Rainshadow | FINAL FANTASY XIV, The Lodestone

Despite accepting the teasing of her friends on the subject, the miqo'te lass known as Kaerri Rainshadow didn't actually live in a box. Not now, at least, although there had been a time when her home, like many others after the Calamity, was on Limsa Lominsa's rough streets instead of inside one of its buildings. Which was how she'd first come to the attention of the Rogues Guild, her current home.

She yawned and stretched, thinking over the strange dream she'd just awoken from. Or was it a dream? It had seemed more real than that at the time. And anyway, there was bound to be evil afoot somewhere, and she was just the miqo'te to put a stop to it! She waved to the other rogues on her way out and headed for Yellowjacket headquarters. Someone there was bound to have something troublesome that needed attending to. With any luck it would be something interesting, maybe even fun! Or maybe she'd run into one of her friends along the way, and they'd have something worth doing...

Reis closed her eyes trying to picture the dream once more, yet the words she heard and the images seen had all but faded into the recesses of her mind.
The young woman sighed irritably getting out of the Inn's bed. She went to work on her morning routine. Changing into her clothing washing up before hand, brushing and putting her hair into her iconic twin ice blue tails. The Au'Ra examined herself in the small mirror her deep violet irises seeming to illuminate her face, better than any foundation she could find. Satisfied Reis turned and exited the room before making her way downstairs and paying the keeper for last nights stay as she waved goodbye and moved out onto the limsa lominsan streets.
"Packed as always"
She commented to no one in particular.
The life of the city had always been bustling as long as she had set roots here.
Still it was always nice to see the fisherman heading out into the bay and various vendors selling their wares in the growing market. That was her destination.

Yuri was lost.

Again.

She had asked directions to the nearest major settlement from: a wandering Elezen woman, a drunken Lalafell, a Roegadyn man dressed only in a decidedly brief pair of shorts and a Treant. Granted, the latter's only contribution to the exchange was firing razor-sharp leaves at Yuri as she fled screaming, but it seemed to work. She had arrived in New Gridania.

And then she'd gotten lost again. Roaming through the arboreal capital with row upon row of trees replacing streets and avenues was bewildering. People of all species thronged around her, jostling her as they went about her business and generally ignoring her shy requests for direction. She tried to ask a Lalafell the direction toward the nearest inn, but became acutely aware that he was only interested in trying to peek up her skirt. She left him rapidly, with a large lump on his head following a solid crack from her bow, and searched for it herself. It was only the sight of a majestic airship coming in to land that finally helped her locate the inn, The Carline Canopy. The proprietress, 'Mother' Miounne, coddled the tired and ragged Yuri like a lost child, seating her by a vent that gushed warm air and bringing a bowl of delicious mushroom soup with freshly-baked black bread and delicious creamy butter. Yuri attacked the food with a gusto that verged on animalistic, devouring the bread and pouring the soup down her throat as if she'd not eaten in an age. The warm sensation of satisfied fullness settled her anxiety and she started to feel drowsy.

As her head nodded, she heard Miounne speaking, "You need to find yourself a good job, Yuri dear. With that bow, you'd be best reporting to the Archer's Guild. And I also know that there were scouts from a new Free Company handing out flyers."
She placed one of the parchment flyers on the table in front of Yuri. The crest was a bright red heart on a shield, the face of the shield was blue and crossed by a yellow lightning flash. "RECRUITING NOW!", the flyer read, "Males and females of all races, any Disciples of War, Magic, Land or Hand. The new Free Company, ShieldHeart, seeks to bring you together in the bonds of fraternal union! All applicants to send their interest to K'ryx Nuhn or K'Shar Tia, care of the Moogle Mail, or in person at the Gold Saucer."

Yuri smiled. A Gold Saucer? Did it come with a Gold Teacup? She would certainly have to investigate this. But first, she needed sleep.

The next day was a storm of activity. She enrolled with the Archer's Guild (having first secured a map to direct her around the city), performed the few simple tasks the Guildmaster required of her to prove her ability, then found herself at the Adder's Nest, home of the Order of the Twin Adders, Gridania's military arm. As a newly sworn in Serpent Private, she now had the freedom of Gridania and the neighboring lands to explore. To aid her in her journey, her Grand Company provided her with a horse-bird, what they called a 'Chocobo'. The bird's gentle, protective nature reminded Yuri of a childhood friend, so she named the bird for her, Kasumi.

Thus equipped, Yuri headed south, to seek out distant Thanalan and the exciting-sounding Gold Saucer.

K'shar was bored. K'ryx had run off to do yet another GATE, leaving his older brother to sit watching from the sidelines. A gigantic Voidsent appeared on the platform and began farting and sneezing in different directions, blasting contestants off the platform. K'ryx survived until the last three before a well-placed fart clipped him and sent him pin-wheeling into the pool of sweet-smelling water that surrounded the base of the platform.

K'shar sighed. This was not what he had envisaged when he had pledged himself to protecting his adopted younger brother. From their earliest days, K'shar had watched over K'ryx, keeping him out of whatever danger he'd almost willingly thrown himself into and generally being a headache. But, he was family. And family meant you put up with their behavior and hoped they would grow up one day. K'ryx ran over, vainly trying to squeeze the water out of his Thaumaturge's garb.
"That was FUN!", he declared, "Did you see? I almost won that one. Can you smell something funny?", the younger Miqo'te laughed, waving a hand in front of his face, "You should do some of these, they're fun."
"No."
"No? Why not?"
"Because,", K'shar replied, "they are inane and pointless activities. We need to be devoting ourselves to building this Free Company..."
"Oh, but I'm two steps ahead of you, Shar, see?", K'ryx replied.
He tugged a crumpled piece of parchment from his scrip. K'shar unfolded it and read it. "RECRUITING NOW! Males and females of all races, any Disciples of War, Magic, Land or Hand. The new Free Company, ShieldHeart, seeks to bring you together in the bonds of fraternal union! All applicants to send their interest to K'ryx Nuhn or K'Shar Tia, care of the Moogle Mail, or in person at the Gold Saucer."
"You made our contact address, the Gold Saucer!?!? What the hell are you playing at, Ryx?"
"It's fine, Shar, it'll tell people that we're fun-loving and open for exciting adventures."
"Or that we are inveterate gamblers."
"That too.", K'ryx said, sulkily, "Don't you like it?"
K'shar sighed. This was one of K'ryx's tactics, pouting and kitty-cat eyes when he thought his older brother was angry or disappointed with him. And, dammit, it usually worked.
"No, it's fine. We'll just have to dissuade people from thinking all we do is gamble."
"Great!", K'ryx replied, immediately dropping the pout, "Now come play Cuff-a-Cur with me. Even someone as feeble as you can win at that!"

Yuri Kitsune

This isn't right, Yuri thought to herself, as she looked around her. Everywhere she looked screamed 'This is not Thanalan!'. Roegadyn were unloading crates from sailing ships onto the docks, as seagulls wheeled overhead, screeching to each other. A Hyur with a fishing rod strolled past, touching the brim of his hat respectfully in Yuri's direction. What wasn't wooden platforms and jetties was built into and onto the many white rocks that stood out of the water below.

"Awwww! I'm lost, AGAIN!!", she howled, falling to her knees in defeat. This was definitely not Thanalan, despite her best hopes and it certainly wasn't anywhere like a Gold Saucer. She tugged the crumpled map from within her acton and peered at it.

"A right turn at Silvertear Falls, cross Mor Dhol Pass....", she muttered, tracing her route with a finger.

The river crossing. She'd paid a toothless old Miqo'te who gummed something about a voyage to take her across the Dinderfoot River, then she'd fallen asleep. When she'd awoken she was here.
"Move along, you!", a gruff voice barked from behind her. She turned to see a Roegadyn in a smart red uniform jerking a thumb at her.
"I'm terribly sorry, but where is this?", she replied, peering up at him.
"Where? WHERE!? Doncher know anythin'? This 'ere is Limsa Lominsa, star o' La Noscea!"

Oh bother.
