Part 1: the stone age.
Gallan stood up in the morning sun and stretched his arms. He had slept under a tree last night, terribly so in fact. It wasn't the first time he'd done it, but he was getting old and didn't move like he used to. Perhaps if he were younger he wouldn't have lost the others in that rainstorm.
Memories of those strange enemies in the dark who had appeared seemingly out of nowhere. They had had no light, no weapons, all they could do was run. When the thunder started there was no hearing each other from a distance, and by midnight finding each other was hopeless. Gallan prayed to the goddess the others found someplace safe to hide.
He began gathering branches and wood to made an axe, and chopped away at the small trees in his surrounding area. A pickaxe would be pertinent as well. He was a fool to think they shouldn't have made camp sooner and prepared that evening. He thought they could walk through the night and make it to the grounds the surveyor had suggested.
Equipped with a wooden axe and a pickaxe of the same rudimentary fashion he wandered the forest and found what he was looking for; a cave. His father had taught him it was quite easy to find coal and cobblestone at the surface to make torches and tools if he ever caught himself in a pinch. He relished those teachings of his parents especially now in his middle age. Gallan dropped down gently into the mouth of the cave and slightly inside was a vein of the dark black ore he was looking for. He set to work getting some and fashioning torches, and first thing he replaced his wooden tools with stone ones. Just as he was finishing up this process he heard a gargled groan which made him jump out of his skin He backed up toward the lit entrance of the cave and gripped his axe so tightly his knuckles turned white.
What was probably mere moments felt like hours as he awaited his attackers pursuits, his eyes gazing vainly into the darkness. Nothing came out.
Cautiously he approached the darkness and placed a toorch on the ground. Just a bit further down was a horrid sickly green face which made Gallan grimace. The thing jumped up the incline of the cave floor and attempted to grab at Gallan whom promptly beat it's skull in with a few whacks of his stone axe. It did not put up much of a fight to be honest for how ugly it was. Gallan calmed himself down and exited the hole.
"I'd best find some food and the others before I go investigating this phenomenon further."
And with that he was on the hunt.
