“Come on down here and give us a try. Ya wanna do some livin' before you die.”
The Big Easy, The Birthplace of Jazz, Hollywood South, The City That Care Forgot, New Orleans, Louisiana is a small city with a large reputation. People flock to the city in crowds, eager to experience the culture, from the French Quarter Market to the infamous nightlife on Bourbon Street. It’s a city of festivals, of freewheeling fun, of go-cups poured in the bars where cocktails were invented. It’s a city with a rhythm, style and attitude all its own. In this city Carnival stretches for weeks, gumbo and crawfish recipes are family heirlooms and neighborhood pride is touted in all corners of the Big Easy.
But beneath that vibrant and colorful city are much more...otherworldly things. New Orleans is also a place of the supernatural, a place where demons and ghosts have free rein, where cemeteries are above-ground cities of the dead and Voodoo has its own royal queen. Vampires and Werewolves roam the streets during the night, while ghosts haunt the old plantation houses and the cemeteries in which they reside, some unaware that they are even gone. Of course these are only rumors, tall tales and superstitions sold to tourists in the form of tacky voodoo dolls and ghost tours.
But there are those who know better, who grew up learning how to communicate with dead ancestors for guidance. Beings who can only come out at night, those who go into a frenzy at the first sight of a full moon. New Orleans is home to many interesting individuals, both human and other.
Feel the presence of the paranormal as you wander the French Quarter, as you lose your inhibitions on Bourbon Street. Where dark secrets and ghosts lurk behind every corner. The supernatural community of New Orlean is as bustling and vibrant as the human side of the city. They have done a marvelous job of blending in with the mundane, hiding their true nature from the humans that they coexist with.
While NOLA is home to many supernatural beings the current rulers are three groups of covens. The trio overlook the entire supernatural community. While each species has their own sets on rules, it is the covens that everyone answers to.
The Covens consists of:
House of Duprè - A group of voodoo & hoodoo practitioners and the oldest group out of the covens. The religion focuses heavily on ancestral worship as well as worship or spirits called loa and sharing a common cultural background.
Sisters of the Light - A group of Wiccans, witches who are nature based. They believe in The God and The Goddess, who represent all the feminine and masculine energies of the universe, or the strictly female figure of The Goddess who represents divinity on her own. Many believe in the rule of three and as a result look down on “dark magic”.
The Independents - The Independents are not really a group, only coming together when they need to do so. They are Eclectic Witches, who practice Eclectic Paganism, a form of Paganism in which the practitioner either blends aspects of paganism/neopaganism with aspects of other religious beliefs, or combines elements of more than one pagan faith to construct a belief system of their own. Eclectic Pagans will borrow from several different philosophies, religions, time periods and sometimes pantheons rather than try to reconstruct the religious traditions of a specific group or time period (as seen in Pagan Reconstructionism).
For some, eclecticism is an intermediate phase on their path from one religion to another. They should never take or borrow from closed practices but there are those who ignore this and suffer the consequences as a result.
