Laura Spade
Location: Medical Bay, Gym
A woman sat cast in shadow within a small room. Motes of light reflected off her pale, gray hands and forearms within the darkness, lit only by a small lamp set upon the dull metal table in the center.
Her two red eyes, however, glowed brightly like a cat in the night. The woman sat still. Silent, and waiting.
The door opened. In stepped inside a young doctor with deep set bags under his eyes from long hours of work. He smiled, but his face and slump betrayed his fatigue. The woman noticed the way he pressed his lips in apprehension just as he entered, and the way he caught his breath when she looked at him.
The doctor paused awkwardly for a few seconds while she stared at him with her eerily unblinking red eyes. “Your papers have been processed,” he broke the silence. “You’re almost cleared for active duty. We just need the approval from the director now.”
She didn’t react. The doctor became more and more uncomfortable as the quiet drew on. “Um…” he said while reaching inside his coat pocket. The metal table clinked as he placed a small card upon the table and pushed it towards her. “This is your ID. Keep it on you at all times. We’ll be informing you of assignments soon…”
Her red eyes slowly roamed to examine the card. On it, emblazoned in white text, was a name; a dead woman’s name. Laura Spade.
The woman knew her. Detective Spade of Scotland Yard was a top graduate of the police academy in London. She had a promising career, a loving family, and wonderful guy she was seeing but not committed to. Her life tragically ended in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Bristol.
Laura hesitantly took the ID card and pocketed it.
“Anyways…” the doctor continued. His breath hitched a tad when she turned her head towards him. “The other doctors and I recommend that you go meet and socialize with some of the other Units. We believe it may help you overcome the trauma of your...changes. At the very least see to meeting Dante as soon as possible. He’s also a natural, and, um, understands your situation.”
Red eyes stared at him, still unblinking and expressionless. “You’re free to leave. We’ll...um...see you soon,” the doctor tried finishing as fast as he could, barely hiding his eagerness to leave as he quickly stepped out. The door remained open as he left.
Laura blinked. She smiled, very slightly, but let her face fall back to its blank, almost ghostly expression right after. Languidly Laura sat up from her seat and walked out, making her way through the medical bay and into the hallways, past the hushed silence of the people she past, and their faint whispers of “La Diabla” after they felt she couldn’t hear them any longer.
She wasn’t familiar with the pathways inside headquarters, but she did recall where she saw the gym at one point. So, directionless, Laura made her way there through the leftmost entrance. It was empty save for a leanly muscular man with dark hair and amber eyes currently exerting himself by sprinting on a treadmill. This elicited her curiosity, so she leaned against the wall. Staring at him.
