The Purple Soul

Roleplay Type(s)
The sun was almost directly centered in the sky, as the sea bases' air pads were getting prepped for launch.

A group of people, arriving from different backgrounds, cultures, and ideals, step out into the sunlight, as the ocean base slightly tips to the side, though nobody notices.
Soldiers run, walk, and shuffle their way around the launch pad, messing helicopters, talking to other soldiers, and preparing in general. A man clad in purple and white stands in the shade of an overhang of the main building on the base, watching the preparations, with an undiscernible expression on his face.

When he notices these people, six of them in total, stepping out from different points onto the area, he waves them over in no order in particular.

Andie shifted her pack on her shoulders, adjusting the weight to sit with less pressure on her body. The sun was high in the sky and a quick glance at her watch confirmed that it was around noon. Her skin was already beginning to shine with the heat of the day, despite the ocean breeze taking the bite off. Andie was used to it, though. Her past expeditions had found her deep in the jungles of South America. No, heat was nothing new to the navigator, and she knew it would likely be weeks before she would actually feel cool again. Andie looked down at her dusty boots, then back up to the bustling scene in front of her. Soldiers hurry to and fro across the floating base, getting the aircraft ready for this mysterious island mission. Her gaze focuses on a man dressed in purple and white surveying the scene. Their eyes meet, and he waves her over. This must be the man behind all this, Andie thinks, as she makes her way across the base to the man. She sees a few others doing the same and they gather around the man, waiting.

Iris couldn't help but squint her grey-blue eyes at her surroundings as she stepped out from the interior of the ocean base, mentally reviewing all of the claims her uncle had made when he had presented this 'exploration' to her.

"... I'm pretty sure he didn't say anything about the military being involved, though..." she muttered to herself.

Oh well. At least it makes this whole thing look a bit more legitimate! It could've been worse - probably. Iris doesn't really talk to that part of her family all that much, so she was actually lowkey expecting this 'exploration mission' to be some sort of smuggling thing. Not that she's done anything of the sort! Running around with her group of fellow parkour artists was about as much as she could handle, in terms of 'not being 100% complacent with the law'. Seriously, what's the point in constructing uniquely shaped buildings and leaving around abandoned buildings if you don't want people to climb and/or run all over them? Plus, it's not like they're actually breaking anything! ... Most of the time.

Before she could go too far down that train of thought, though, the young ravenette suddenly took notice of some purple-and-white clad guy waving her over. Figuring that he was the person in charge of this whole thing, she began to meander her way over, curiously glancing around at the military operations as she went.

Kosey
Location:
Airbase
Mentioned:
Squad141 Squad141
Stepping onto the militarian airbase, Kosey was lost in thought, admiring the craftsmanship of the not only the base itself but the helicopters that littered the uppermost layer. A man that was stood out from the rest, mostly because he was not sporting the common attire of military rags, rather he was fully clothed in purple and white waved Kosey over, snapping him back into reality. Taking his time to make his way over, making sure to pick up some tools that were laying around, sure he did feel bad for "borrowing" some of the military's tools, however, he rationalized it by thinking that they had enough and probably would not notice one set missing. Placing the tools into the side pockets of his hiking backpack, he picked up his pace towards the man in purple and white.

Sasha Novakova landed on a base in the middle of the ocean as a passenger on a private military jet alongside three high-ranking military escorts. She didn’t know why her father wouldn’t just let her fly there herself, the last place she’d be assassinated was a literal military base. As she was technically a Russian representative, she was dressed in a Russian military uniform. It gained quite a few stares from the soldiers around her since it wasn’t often countries collaborated for military missions, they were too busy fighting each other, but she strutted through as if she belonged there. Plus, the three burly soldiers wearing jackets littered with medals and badges behind her diverted most of the attention.

“Alright, I’ll take it from here.” She told the escorts in Russian once they reached an open clearing and she saw a man waving her over.

“You know you don’t have to do this.” The Captain said in Russian also, so no-one could tell what they were talking about, “We can take you home if you want.”

She smiled sardonically, “Thank you for the option, but that won’t be necessary.”

“Your father's worried about you.” He said.

“I’m aware,” She replied, taking her bag of supplies with her that included a change of clothes a bit more appropriate for groundwork, “And I have made my choice. Thank you for your escort, now go home.”

She walked off before they could try and change her mind any more.

The Professor and Alexander were rechecking their gear while trying to stay out of the way from the hustle on the pad. The pair were amazed at the rather overwhelming amount of people, and money, being invested in this expedition. Practically giddy with excitement Alex was able to shrug off the lingering uncertainty that crept to the back of his mind as his gaze traced over the barrage of military figures. If it had not been for the cooler headed Professor Alex would have never known he was being waved down, why him Alex could only guess. All he could give was a shrug to his boss before going to meet his caller, on the way Alex noted others being treated to the same mysterious gesture.

Lochlann James | Diver | Location: Ocean Base | mentions: Squad141 Squad141

Loch grunts as he's pushed out into the open area, scowling over his shoulder at the soldiers who had accompanied him since they took him from his home in Florida. Standing up straight, he surveys this new territory. More soldiers everywhere he looked, making all kinds of preparations. Everything about this place put him on edge. The only comfort was the smell of the ocean are, the sound of the water crashing against the ship. The rocking of the base seemed to go unnoticed by the others, but Lochlann felt it with every fiber of his being. He would know that feeling anywhere. The soldiers behind him said something to him, pointing towards a small group of people surrounding a man dressed in white and purple. Shouldering his pack, Lochlann made his way over and joined the group, giving them a quick look down before focusing his attention on the man in the center.

After waiting a bit, the man finally put his hands down, and adjusted his glasses, revealing his tired and weary eyes. Putting his hands back in his jacket pockets, he sighed, and looked around, counting the people who were extremely out of place on this base. "Looks like you all made it. Good." He said this as he turned and began going through a large black binder. "I'm Markus Cameron, the lead scientist here, " said he, not looking up from his work, "and I'll be coordinating your team from here on out." Finally, he pulled out seven pieces of paper, and haded six to each of the people in front of him. Stepping back, paper in hand, he huffed, and began another spiel of information, obviously tired of having to say it.

"So, you six, due to your skills, backgrounds, and general uniqueness, we've decided to pair you all together. You'll be with Charlie over there at Heli 14," Markus pointed to a helicopter with a pilot waving at them, "And you'll be an official group. Team Delta, to be specific." Putting the paper down, the man looked at the strangers directly. "Better get to knowing each other, then head on over to Charlie. He'll get you off the ground. You'll be taking the same transport there and back by the way, so get comfortable with one another." Then he stalked off, probably to give another lecture to a group of eager soldiers.

Sasha didn’t know quite what to think about the people she’d been grouped with, they were all pretty normal looking so she couldn’t tell anyone’s skillset from the front. Some of them looked like they’d been picked straight off the street. She had hoped it would be a bit more like a special operations mission since they were something she was used to handling, but this felt like a bunch of random people being thrown at a problem without prior training. Hopefully Mr. Cameron wasn’t exaggerating when he said they had skills.

Either way, she could make it work. She’d spent her entire life studying military tactics and learning how to make the best of the resources she had so it wasn’t a stretch to think she could handle it. Her only worry was if they would listen to her.

“Okay, we should start with introductions.” She said, her accent barely shining through, “I’m Sasha Novakova, and I’m a tactician and pilot for the Russian military. If you could say your skill set as well, that would be appreciated. I like to know what I’m working with.”

Alexander had mere moments to glance around at the others who were joined with him. He had even less time to look over the paper handed to him before having quite the bomb dropped. Being split from his long time mentor and colleague came as quite the shock, evident by raised brows and mouth just so minutely hung open. However Alexander was a professional and was quick to return to a demeanor of one. Though he certainly didn't find the motivation to be the one that broke the ice.

Luckily he didn’t have to as another spoke first. When Alexander’s eyes met the voice he quickly found himself not wanting to go second. He had noted the uniform, had no idea what country it hailed from but the professionalism and confidence she spoke with had made him feel a tad inferior.

With a sheepish smile Alex spoke up, “Uh, I just teach biology at the University of Florida and work under Professor O’Brien. I guess y’all wouldn’t know who he is really." He paused for a second or two to mentally berate himself before adding, "But yeah I teach and do lab work with herps, uhm reptiles and amphibians.”

Iris had been busy reading over the piece of paper that was handed off to her before she realized that introductions had already started. Flustered, she quickly put the paper down and waited until the nerdy-looking guy finished speaking before piping up, a carefree grin on her face.

"Nice meet you guys! I'm Iris Ryder, and I guess you could say my skill set is basically being a parkour artist - I can move pretty fast, I'm flexible, and I'm pretty good at finding ways to get from Point A to Point B."

Kosey was listening closely to the people who were speaking, waiting for the others to finish their own introductions. When Iris had finished her own he decided to speak up. “Hello everybody, my name is Kosey,” he started his British accent shinning through, “I’m excited to go on this adventure with all of you. I am an engineer, so I mostly design mechanical marvels, however, I can fix anything that I have the schematics for.” He finished

Andromeda Lane | Navigator | Location: Ocean Base | mentions Everyone Everyone

Andie listened to the others as she looked them all over.
A russian militant, a herpologist, a parkour artist, and a British engineer. What a bunch we are. I wonder what he is, she thinks, glancing over at the only one besides herself who hadn't introduced himself. Andie had seen him being practically dragged onto the main platform of the base by soldiers. "Oh, I guess it's my turn," she says, noticing that she was next in line. "I'm Andromeda Lane, cartographer, botanist, zoologist, geologist, medic, and general explorer. Mainly a cartographer, though, and since this paper lists me as navigator of Team Delta, I reckon that's what I've been brought in for. This is far from the first expedition like this I've been on, though none of them have been conducted in such a mysterious way. I look forward to discovering this Island with you all." Andie's tone was short and matter of fact; professional in every way. She indicated that her introduction was over by taking a scarf from around her wrist and wrapping it around her head, effectively tying her curls into a puff.

Lochlann James | Diver | Location: Ocean Base | mentions: Everyone Everyone

Loch was a bit miffed that everyone seemed willing to be on this so-called team. "Uh, I'm Loch", he said as the black woman finished her lengthy list of qualifications. "I'm the diver, I guess, though I wasn't really told much when I was dragged here. I'm also a marine biologist and an ecological activist." Andromeda wasn't the only one with a list, though he decided to keep his identity as a known terrorist a secret. He wasn't real sure how well that would go down outside of his circle of other 'activists'.

Kosey did not seem interested with what the others were saying, as he started taking apart his watch, however, he payed close attention to the final two introductions. When he was finished repairing the watch he had just broken he glanced up at Loch, “You seem familiar,” Kosey said with a hint of curiosity, “have we met before?” It’s true the lad did seem familiar although Kosey was unable to place were he had seen this ‘diver’ perhaps it was as simple as Loch was one of his patrons at some point in time.

While the others were talking, Sasha had been writing everything down in her notebook for future reference. There were a lot of mismatched skills in the group and she had to wonder how half of them ended up here since they seemed to have such normal lives.

The person that stood out most to her was Andromeda with her laundry list of qualifications. Sasha made a note next to her name that meant she was to be protected at all times since she was their best hope at surviving. The engineer would also be useful, although she was unsure about how effective he would be in a dire situation so she put a question mark next to his name. Iris was another that stood out. Sasha could think of a thousand ways her skill set would be useful on an island, but it all depended on her willingness to follow instructions.

Her biggest concern, however, was the man who called himself Loch. He didn't seem to want to be there at all and she doubted he'd be a very good team player, let alone follow any orders. She hoped he wouldn't slow them down. If he did, she may have to make some adjustments to her plans, but until she could get a better idea of him, she'd plan as if he'd be helpful. She was glad all her notes were in Russian so the others couldn't read that she'd written 'possible liability' next to his name.

The last person was the scientist who said he taught at a university. He didn't give her much to work with, she didn't even have his name, so she decided to do a little bit of prodding, "Excuse me," She made eye contact with him, "I didn't catch your name, do you mind repeating it?"

The thoughts wondering why this group was put together had increased in a growing mixture of confusion and curiosity as the others stated their profession or skills. He may not have the tactical mind he presumed the Russian military woman carried but he could see the oddness of it all. At least it made since for the half that carried various “ologist” titles to be in a group together, which also relieved him from being the odd man out. Well at least in title.

Alex was about to look over his paper again when the slightly accented voice of, Sasha he believed it was, spoke again. Upon meeting her gaze he understood she was talking specifically to him asking for a name. Guess he forgot to mention that. “Oh my name is Alex.” He answered simply.

Loch was looking out over toward the water when he heard someone talking. "Hm?" He said, looking over at the darker skinned man. "Oh, um..." he looked a little closer at the engineer, trying to see if he recognized the man. "I don't think so. You spend any time on the gulf coast?" As much as he didn't want to be there, Loch was beginning to relax, the smell of the ocean air working it's way in and loosening him up. He took off his pack and bounced on his toes a little, stretching his arms above his head. With them outstretched like that, his fingers were nearly eight and a half feet off the ground and truly showed off his formidable size. Though when he bounced back down onto flat feet and dropped his arms, giving an easy smile- the first since he'd left home- he didn't look so scary.

She wrote his name down but was a little peeved that it didn’t match the rest of the profiles, “So, have you had any experience with this type of thing before?” She said, both to make conversation and to figure out more information.

It was a little odd making conversation as she was since she was so used to knowing exactly what everyone was capable of and them having already been briefed. She didn’t get many opportunities to talk with normal people. Sure, there were some her age in the military that hung around in the same places she did, but they were always a little wary of her because her father was high up in the chain of command.

“Experience with this,” Alex quietly trailed off as he thought. A flicker of movement momentarily distracted him, well it was actually a thought that went something along the lines of, ‘Holy shit that dude is huge' that distracted him. Having given only passing glances to the group Alex had only noted names or distinguishing features, how a giant escaped him was a mystery. “Right.” Alex snapped his full focus back to the question, “Well I did field work in Florida, Peru and Costa Rica but it’s kinda apples to oranges.” Well it was more like an apple to a crashlanded alien fruit with a potential touch of lethal pathogens, but Alex left that part out. Do fruits crashland?

"I fail to see how this is anything like fruit, but I'll take your word for it." She said, slightly confused and added another three question marks next to his name. It was a little encouraging that he could name-drop a few places specifically yet not enough to make her confident in the team. She looked around at the group once again, "Shall we head over to the next stage of travel to continue this conversation?"

Alexander choked back a chuckle at the apparent cultural misunderstanding. More so out of decency but the scribbles Sasha put in that notebook had some say in it. He suddenly wondered if that just made him the designated strange American. Guess it had to be somebody. Sasha's question stirred him from his inner musings with her to which Alexander took a peak over his shoulder for the Professor but was quick to see that he was gone from their original spot. Given his background and professionalism the Professor probably, no undoubtedly already was with the team assigned to him. “Yeah. I guess I am ready.” Alex turned his attention back to the group before asking, "Anybody else wanna come?”

Iris had been awkwardly standing where she was while her apparent teammates chatted. It was very clear that she was the youngest out of them, and she felt a bit out of place because of it. Plus, she really wasn't sure what to say anyways. Fortunately, though, it looked like she didn't have to stand there silently for too long - the woman who introduced herself as Sasha had suggested that they should start moving. The ravenette perked up and smiled in a carefree way.

"Oh, sure! We probably shouldn't keep these military guys waiting anyways, right?"

Sasha put her notebook away and looked around for the man next to the helicopter that Mr. Cameron had pointed out before he left. She saw him standing alone reading something off a clipboard so she started to head towards him, meanwhile posing a question to the group that she was very interested in knowing the answer to, "Why did you all decide to do this? It hardly seems like the logical option for most of you."

Alexander took the island side flank as he followed Sasha to the chopper. Now that they were soon to depart for this unknown isle it was almost too good to be true and excitement began to build. Mysterious, maybe never tampered with by human’s influence, it was an explorer’s wet dream. Eat your heart out Magellan. Alex had just managed to pick up on the question asked to everybody. It was a strange thing to ask, at least to Alex, but he probably saw this experience different. “Not everyday you get to explore a new island. Who knows what is waiting out there.” His voice was full of excitement and wonder but deep in his mind the unknown was found not so wonderful.

Kosey listened in to the others conversation, noting that the Russian woman, who went by Sasha, was taking notes every time some one spoke. However, he was brought back to the conversation that he had begun with Lochlann, when the young diver spoke up. "Hmm, admittedly I can't say that I've spent to much time in the Americas" he responded. Although before the other had time to think of a response the group seemed to start making their way towards the helicopter where Mr. Cameron happened to be waiting. Looking over the rest of the group, Kosey decided to join the growing numbers heading towards their waiting adventure.
