Nina looked over at him and smiled weakly before giving a small nod. “I-I am, but please, don’t feel as though you need to rush. I just like to be prepared.” She told him. Nina was a very patient person. There was no rush when it came to traveling, she wanted to enjoy it and take her time.

Nina skipped breakfast since she ran out of food already and figured she could get something in the village. Once her traveling companion was ready to go, she got up from her spot on the ground and they began walking. Nina was quiet as she glanced around the forest.

After finishing his routine, Midori packed his belongings in his bag and walked together with Nina. The Forest around them was crisp and comforting, enveloping Midori with its natural aura. He took in the fresh breeze of air that whooshed along the forest path. The leaves crunched and cackled as they stepped closer towards the village.

Midori realized that he hasn't seen Nina eat anything for breakfast. He hadn't eaten anything for breakfast either. With that thought in mind, he quickly pulled out a small pack out of his bag. He untied the rope holding its opening, showing off a variety of snacks. He took out two pieces of sweet buns and returned his food pack inside his bag.

He held out one of the sweet buns towards Nina and asked, "Do you want some?"

Nina looked at him with surprise. She was a little hungry. She ran out of food sometime yesterday but was putting up with it. She hesitated a moment but took the food he offered. “Thank you.” She said, before taking a small bite of the sweet bun.

She ate slowly as they walked, taking in the the sights of the area. It was quite beautiful, but something in the air felt off. She chose to ignore it, thinking it was probably nothing.

((Sorry it’s so short! 😰))

Midori finished off his Sweet Bun with one large bite. He gobbled it up for a few moments and finally swallowed in one quick motion. He pulled out his water container and chugged a fair bit. He finished with a satisfied sigh.

Midori turned towards Nina while they were walking, "Hey, how good are you with chakra?" Unaware of the surrounding dangers, he naively asked Nina that question.

A few meters away from their position, there was a group of five bandits hiding from their view. Their leader, a large muscled thug, huddled them together. The Bandit Leader pointed at two of his subordinates, "Both of you, circle around and cover their escape route. While the three of us will ambush them at the far end of the route. We'll do a pincer attack and kill them both. Do you understand?" The subordinates nodded and the two subordinates from earlier sneaked back into the darkness and crawled towards a bushy, shadowy area behind Midori and Nina.

The Bandit Leader nodded in satisfaction and lead his other two subordinates towards the far end of the route, preparing to ambush the duo. The Leader pulled up a crossbow and loaded an arrow. The crossbow let out a satisfying chink as it successfully loaded in the arrow. He gave the loaded crossbow to his subordinate and told him, "The moment you see them cross that rock over there, you shoot at the Boy. Got it?" The subordinate nodded and aimed at the path, waiting for the Duo to pass by.

She thought for a moment about his question. Nina didn’t exactly consider herself an expert on the subject of chakra. She had some basic knowledge but that was almost it. Like him, she wanted to learn more and grow, but she would still help her new friend the best she could. She felt a little nervous and embarrassed but she tried to push that aside.

As she opened her mouth to answer she stopped suddenly. She looked around the area, something definitely did feel right. It almost felt as if they were being watched. She felt a fear and nervousness creep up again. Something was out there but she still didn’t know what. She wasn’t an expert fighter but she could protect herself okay. She hoped that Midori could handle himself as well.

The bandit with the crossbow saw they stop just before the rock and go no further. It wasn’t his order but he decided to take a chance and shoot now while they were still. Nina suddenly grabbed Midori by the hand and ran off to the right, causing the arrow to miss and land stingy into the dirt. As she ran gay way however, they ran right into another bandit. Nina quickly pulled out a weapon, Incase things got worse.

"Ugh, what are you doing?" Midori asked as he was dragged away by Nina. They both landed on the grass with a grunt and stood up without any injuries. "Why'd you do th-at.. for..." he trailed off as he noticed an arrow deep in the ground he stood earlier. He looked back at Nina and tried to apologize until a bandit suddenly came out of one of the bushes. "Thank you for saving me Nina-chan," he apologized while he glared at the bandit. He put up a fighting stance as he heard soft, footsteps behind them.

"Well well well, what have we got here?" The bandit leader said as he walked towards the duo slowly. His lackeys carefully circled the duo, forming a 5 point formation that covered their surroundings. The bandit leader stopped and grinned, "Listen here little kids, drop what you have right now and maybe... We'll let you go." he said while pointing a knife at them. "How about it?"

Midori glared at the leader, "You're not getting anything from us!" He pulled out two rusty kunais and slid into a fighting stance facing towards the Bandit Leader. "Nina-chan, what do we do?" he whispered towards Nina as he watched the bandits.

Nina was silent, she didn’t answer him right away. She didn’t think there would be five bandits. She gripped her weapon tighter, she wasn’t confident that she could handle all of them, but she remembered that she wasn’t alone this time. She thought about what to do, anything seemed like a bad idea really, but they couldn’t just sit there. “T-The two in front of us... you take the one on the right, I’ll take the left. J-Just charge and attack.” She whispered to him, so the bandits wouldn’t hear. It was a good thing Nina was so naturally quiet. (The two at the bottom of the picture. Their right and left.)

Hoping he would follow her lead, she dashed towards one of the bandits directly on their path, weapon ready to strike. Nina was actually surprisingly fast. The bandit cried out in pain as she gave him a deep cut along his chest. She pushed him aside and made a run for it, glancing back to see if her partner was with her.

When Nina dashed towards the Bandit at their right, Midori immedietaly took on the bandit at their left. He threw one of his rusty kunais at the Bandit and ran as fast he can towards him.

As the kunai came sailing at him, the bandit cursed, "Goddammit!" The bandit dived left towards Nina's direction in order to dodge the kunai. He felt the soft ground padding his fall.

"Perfect!" Midori shouted as he immediately changed directions and dashed towards Nina. He vaulted over the fallen bandit and never bothered to pick up his kunai, opting to run instead. He saw Nina glancing back at him and he shouted, "Nina! Run! Don't turn back!"

The Bandit Leader seethed in rage as he saw how the situation unfold. "Izuko! Reiga! After them!" he shouted as he ran towards the duo. The other two bandits followed up. One of the bandits with the crossbow took aim at the retreating duo and took a shot. The arrow sailed hastily towards Nina.

Nina looked back once more and saw the bandit shoot another arrow, she tried to jumped out but the arrow had grazed her arm a bit as she moved. She winced and brought a hand up to the wound on her arm. It could have been worse and she did not stop running. Knowing that they were still chasing, Nina let go of her arm for a moment to throw a kunai in their direction, hoping it would do something to slow them down.

The bandits managed to dodge the projectile and continued their chase. Nina was a getting a little annoyed but also extremely worried. They had to either fight, or lose them some how. They were getting closer and closer and Nina wasn’t sure what to do. She pulled out another kunai and held it tightly in her grip. The leader was right behind them. She had a stupid idea but maybe it would by time for her friend to get away. Nina was a somewhat decent fighter and she told herself they were just some bandits, trying to give herself at least some confidence...

She took a deep breath and gripped her weapon tightly before suddenly turning around, attacking the leader of the group.

Midori's eyes widened as he watched Nina suddenly turn around to face the bandits. "Nina! What are you doing!" Midori shouted at her as he stopped running away.

The bandit leader simply laughed as he blocked Nina's kunai with his katana, "Is this all you got little girl?" He quickly stepped back and attempted to stab at Nina's chest, aiming for her heart.

Seeing this, Midori shouted "Nina! Watch out!" Not waiting for her reply, he tried dashing towards Nina's side but was stopped when the two other bandits stopped him in his tracks.

"Where are you going kid?" the crossbow bandit spat out as he blocked Midori's sight of Nina. The other bandit showed off his axe and pointed it at Midori, "We're your opponent kid. Our boss is going to take good care of Nina-chan."

The way the bandit said Nina's name sickened Midori to no end. "Nina! I'll take care of these two! Please hold on!" he shouted as he prepared another kunai and shifted into a dual-wielding stance. His heart beat wildly as he focused on his situation. He never expected to be ambushed by a bandit group, he should've been more careful. They should've been more careful.

Nina silently cursed to herself, she had hoped she could by her friend time and he would keep going but for some reason he stayed. She wasn’t sure why.

She struggled against the the man, pushing her kunai against his katana, trying to find and opening or something. He made a step, thrusting his weapon towards her, she quickly moved out of the way but the man kept coming. From what she couldn’t dodge she tried blocking with her kunai.

She glanced away for a spit second, trying to find Midori to see if he was okay or if he got away but that was a mistake. She lost her footing and earned a nice cut from the man’s katana. “Better pay attention.” He said mockingly. Nina was quickly losing confidence and hope that she was going to win this. She wasn’t sure what to do.

Midori glared at his opponents while he looked for holes in their fighting stances. The first bandit with the axe had a very large body, easily overshadowing his bandit partner. The second bandit with the bow was skinny, but he was far away so Midori couldn't quickly get near his position.

With these facts in mind, Midori threw both of his rusted kunai at the second bandit, aiming for his chest. The crossbow bandit saw the kunai coming but it was too late. A split second later, both of the thrown kunai dug deep into the bandit's chest, puncturing his heart.

When the bandit with the axe saw this, he shouted in rage, "Damn you! Why don't you take this!" He stepped towards Midori and slashed diagonally, aiming for his chest. Midori stepped back in order to try and avoid the slash but the axe still connected, leaving a thin, diagonal slash across his chest.

"Agh!" Midori shouted in pain as blood slowly trickled down his wound.

Seeing this, the bandit grinned and mocked him, "That's what you get for taking us on!"

The bandit leader swung towards Nina again, so far, all she did was block, still trying to find some sort of opening. She was starting to lose herself but started to see a pattern in his attacks. She watched his movements closely before she saw her chance, a moment where he stopped his attack to reposition his weapon for another attack.

It was a split second but she took the chance, striking with her kunai and digging it deep into the mans shoulder. “Agh, damn it!” He yelled. He pulled out the weapon, now angrier than before. “You’re dead.” He told her with a growl.

Nina tensed up, this time she pilled our a few shuriken and threw them his way, only to be blocked by his katana. She cursed under her breath. She didn’t know very many Jutsu but she tried to think.

There was only one obstacle blocking Midori's path towards Nina. This one bandit threatened to kill him at every moment with slash of his axe. Each time Midori dodged, he would always get hit by the axe's blade. Multiple cuts littered his body, making him look like minced meat.

With no other choice, Midori put his hands together and clumsily went through a series of hand signs. When he finished his last hand sign, he slammed his palm on the ground and shouted, "Earth Release: Piercing Rock Spear!" A rock spear appeared from the ground and quickly went towards the bandit.

Seeing the spear going towards him, the bandit tried dodging by jumping away. But it was too late, the spear with its speed and strength, pierced the bandit's heart easily. With his dying breath, the bandit said, "Curse you..."

Each time Nina tried to make a move, the bandit leader simply would not let her, throwing an attack at her more brutal than the last. She put her hands together to form signs only to receive more cuts on her arms and body.

the man had about enough and was ready to end this. He pushed his attacks even harder, forcing Nina back so he could corner her. Nina stopped when she felt her back hit a near by tree. Now was his chance. The bandit smirked before thrusting his katana forward, straight into Nina’s chest.

Her body fell limp and the man began to laugh. His laughter was cut short however when she disappeared into a puff of smoke and a small log was in her place. The bandit leader growled in frustration and began looking around. “Where did you go brat?!” Nina was hiding in that same tree, looking down at the man and trying to catch her breath.

When the large bandit finally slumped dead, Midori felt relieved. He immediately looked at Nina's direction and saw what just had happened. Seeing the bandit leader stabbing Nina at her chest and her turning into a log made him question his own sanity.

Not seeing Nina anywhere, he assumed that she must have gone into hiding. Midori noticed that the bandit leader has not seen him yet since he was far away from him, because his battle with the two bandits was far from Nina's battle. This meant he had the element of surprise with him.

He went towards the dead bandit that he had thrown his kunai earlier and took the kunai that penetrated the bandit's chest. With his throwing weapons in hand, he sneaked towards the bandit leader's position. Although he was afraid of facing the leader head-on, he hoped that if he fought the leader, Nina would help him defeat the leader.

Pinning his hope on Nina, he came out of where he was hiding and taunted the leader, "Hey! Come here! Fight me you coward!" Midori shouted at the leader as he settled into a fighting stance.

The man turned towards the source of the voice and glared at Midori. He was already angry and turned his attention towards the young man instead of Nina. He got his sword ready and started to charge.

Nina could see some of this from her hiding spot. This man wasn’t going to give up and all she did was piss him off even more. She saw him move towards Midori and clenched her fist. She had to help him. She was already so beat up and tired but she couldn’t continue to hide and do nothing.

as the man charged he was stopped in his tracks when a kunai landed in the dirt between him and his target. He glanced around, looking for the source of the flying weapon but it was silent, there was no movement. Nina got the idea to try and distract the bandit leader while Midori made his move.

Seeing the bandit leader's attention turn to Nina's distraction, Midori ducked sideways and landed on a bush. He hid himself from the bandit leader in order to try and find a way to take him down silently.

The Bandit Leader kept looking around, trying to find the girl that threw the kunai, "Come out little girl. You're both going to die anyway. Make it easy for me, will ya?" He said as he checked the nearby bushes. When he turned around, he noticed that the boy was gone. Angered by this, he quickly yelled out in rage, "Where the hell are you boy! Stop being cowards!"

Midori held back a chuckle as he continued to move between the bushes. Even though he knew that these was a life and death situation, he couldn't help but find humor at the comedic-like scene in front of him.

Nina tensed up as she heard the man yell at her. She knew he wouldn’t be able to find her but she still felt uneasy. She quickly switched positions, moving to another near by tree, silently and undetected.

she peeked out and saw that Midori had gone and hid as well. She looked around for a moment and from her spot in the tree, could see a small part of her friend hiding in some bushes, with the bandit leader looking around for him. Nina pulled out another kunai and threw it. It landed in the dirt, farther away from the two but it was enough to distract the man.

“your aim is getting worse.” He mocked her. However, Nina was aiming for him, she was trying to get him to move away from Midori. Once he was far enough, she pulled out one more kunai... her last one. She took a deep breath and hoped it would work. She got the weapon ready before hurling it in the direction of the bandit. The sharp object landed at his feet and he only chuckled. “Better!” He called and reached down to pick up the weapon, only to realize too late what was attached to it. An explosive tag. His eyes widened only for a second, then an explosion, right where he stood.

The kunai exploded, sending grass and dirt all over the surroundings. Midori's eyes widened as the smoke from the explosion scattered and hid the Bandit Leader's figure. "Woah... that was a big one..." Midori said as he coughed against the smoke.

He pulled up a small white cloth and tied it around his face, turning it into a makeshift mask against the smoke. He waited for a few moments, letting the smoke go away. When the smoke cleared, Midori almost vomited at the sight.

The explosion took the man down, blowing off the left arm he used for trying to pick up the weapon and both of his legs. He belched and held his stomach, trying to stave off the bile that threatened to let itself out. "Ugh.. Blegh!" After a few moments of trying to hold it in, he let it all out, vomiting on the grass floor.

Nina sighed heavily, staying still and silent in her hiding spot for a few moments, trying to catch her breath and calm down. The explosive might have been a little over kill, but she had to do something and that was the first thing that came to mind.

She slowly peeked out from her spot, most of the smoke had cleared and she saw what was left of the man. Well, at least they were no longer in danger. She hopped down and stepped closer to the body, grimacing a bit before looking around for Midori.

He probably saw the whole thing, what if he thought she was crazy now for blowing some guy up? She shook the thoughts out of her head called for him, quietly at first. “Midori!” She hoped he was okay. Better than her at least.

Midori vomited the few last drops of his vomit on the grass before wiping off his mouth with his small white cloth. The sight of the exploded corpse turned his nerves into jelly, making him feel weak and sickly. He slowly took off his now dirty cloth mask and threw it away, deciding that it was too dirty to be used anymore.

“Midori!” A shrill voice rang out from the forest, reaching Midori's ears.

He sluggishly turned to face the direction of the voice and saw Nina running towards him. He weakly smiled as he thought, 'Nina's safe.' He felt weak but he still had enough strength in him. He shakily stood up and leaned against a nearby tree, trying to catch up on his breath. He shouted back at Nina, "Nina!"

Nina sighed in relief, she didn’t blow him up too along with the bandit leader. She slowly approached him, a worried look on her face. “A-Are you okay? I was... I mean, I hope you aren’t hurt too badly. I was worried I might have gotten you too... I-I tried to lure him away and...” she stopped and took a breath.

She lowered her head, looking a bit tired and scared. “I-I’m Sorry... I wasn’t sure what to do...” she sighed softly and looked back up at him. She covered one of her cuts with her hand, wincing a bit. “I guess w-we should keep moving... unless...” she trailed off. She suddenly felt like she was talking too much. She wondered if he still wanted to travel with her.

Midori gulped as he shakily steadied himself against the tree, "I'm fine, Nina-chan. I'm just... a bit sick." He tried his best to not focus on the slightly metallic smell of blood that threatened to disorient his senses. He focused on breathing from his mouth, inhaling for a few seconds and exhaling deeply. He repeated the action for a few times before he felt stable enough to start walking.

Midori walked towards Nina and said, "We have to go, it's really dangerous." He reached out for her hand, trying to lead her towards a safer place away from the battle site.

Nina tensed up a bit, but let him take her hand. She agreed, they had to get out of there. She slowly nodded and they started walking once again. Nina kept her gaze low before taking one last look behind them. She didn’t expect anything like this to happen and just hoped the rest of her journey would be better... and not as stressful.

Nina was silent as they walked. She didn’t really know what to say. Not that she had much to say anyway. She finally looked up when the gates to their destination came into view. She let out a small sigh of relief and started to feel a little safer. They were finally there.
