Bullet
Eye for an eye
A single cloud floated above in the otherwise clear blue sky, softly floating with the gentle winds that impelled it. Adair smiled at the white puff above, a single rebellious cloud in the sea of blue sky. He took it as a good omen, a reassurance that they alone would rule the seas that day. He closed his eyes and felt the light breeze rustle through his hair. A good sign. He hopped down from the rigging onto the wooden deck with a thud, sauntering over to his first mate at the helm. He placed a hand on his shoulder and shook him heartily, letting out a laugh.
"Tis a good day for sailing, my friend! The winds have told me they will give us good fortune today."
His first mate tossed him a glance and smiled doubtfully at his captain's confidence. "You're insane to believe dat, Cap'n. De waters and skies have been calm all day, not even da berds bother to take wing." He spoke in his signature Jamaican accent. Adair grinned in reply, a twinkle in his eyes. "Your lack of faith in your own captain worries me, Songo. But I will forgive you just this once, for I am in high spirits this day." The captain headed to the railing overlooking the deck, the crew one by one pausing their tasks to await their captain's orders.
"Alrighty, lads! Bring down the sails and raise the anchors, the winds are our allies this day. We are well stocked from our last endeavor, and we can't let these ships sail in our waters without our permission, am I right, lads?!" The crew cheered enthusiastically in response, working the ropes and the riggings with more vigor than before. The billowing white sails cascaded down, heavenly white in the morning Caribbean sun. Almost on cue, the winds picked up and filled the sails, the ship a dog on a leash, waiting to be released. "The anchor, boys! The sea awaits!" The heavy metal chain clinked on the wood of the deck as it was drawn up by pulley, until finally the great sailing ship was ready for departure. Adair turned back to his first mate, who stood in disbelief.
"I told you the winds were on our side today!" He declared with a delighted smirk. "Songo, I leave the helm to you for now. I must review the riches I have claimed from our last enterprise." Songo laughed in reply. "Yessah, you have fun wit dat one."
