Fantasy The Cruel King's Court

A.I.S.H.A.

Artificial Integrated Social Human Algorithm
In most stories of a far away place, a hero and a heroine take upon themselves a grand journey that takes them around the wonderful world they live in and defeat a great evil that threatens the balance of this world. There is wonder and romance, heartfelt tears and gentle laughter, all for the sake of bringing us closer to happiness. This is not one of those stories. In the small kingdom of Essetaris, within the capital of Tavissi rests an opulent castle lush with gardens, courtyards, staterooms, ballrooms, and a court known across the continent. For it was the court of King Leopold Esset III, whose namesake took after his grandfather, a terrible tyrant brought low by the very famine and plague he unleashed upon his kingdom and the rest of the continent. There, overlooking the twin rivers Ganchin and Leusa, the court of King Leopold Esset III rests like a golden star, bidding all who lived within its borders to look on in wonderment. But you know the truth. The dark rumors that seep through the cracks of that gilded throne were more than speculation. King Leopold Esset III was a despicable man. You would know. You are a part of the cruel king's court.

Essetarian culture and tradition dictates a rigid, uncompromising hierarchy that splits its people into set classes with little to no hope for social mobility. If you are born into a military family, you are bred and molded into a soldier, officer, and general. Those who refuse are reduced to slaves. It is a test to see if someone has the will and the merit to change their predetermined destiny. If they succeed, it is a testament to their merit. If they fail, it is proof of their foolishness and they are remembered as the dogs they are. As such, the Essetarian faith, known locally and abroad as the Pathing Faith, believes in a god named Haolis, who, upon one's birth, assigns a path for them in life. As such, the priests and priestesses of the Pathing faith take great care in studying the stars to interpret when different people are meant to be born- the Signs of Paths.

As such, within the court of King Leopold Esset III, there are multiple seats that the king shall order from most favored to least favored. Notorious for its dark dealings and low survivability, being a part of the king's court is a position of great power, but also of great risk. But it is a position you did not shy away from.

The Court of King Leopold Esset III holds 7 seats by royal decree - Consortium Coronasis n.1236 in the year 1302 PR (Pathing Revelation):

First Position - Queen Consort- A position of untold power within the court. As someone selected by the king to birth his heir, you have the liberty to request anything within the king's power and he will be obliged to offer it so long as you've captured his heart. There is no concept of marriage within the Pathing faith. The Queen's Consort is merely his favorite and as such, despite having the power to make any request that he is obligated to fulfill, he is still able to replace you with a different Queen Consort given she is not with child.

The First Position of Queen Consort is currently held by Ariela Esset-Winnefal of House Winnefal. She has given birth to a princess Ophelia Esset II, aged 19 and a prince/ heir-apparent, Callus Esset, aged 13.

Second Position - King's Hand- Second only to the king, himself, the King's Hand has the executive power to enforce the laws of the kingdom as he or she sees fit and has first consideration when offering advice. In other words, the king will always listen to the opinion of the King's Hand before considering anyone else within the court. As such, anyone within the court that falls out of favor with the King's Hand is put at a severe disadvantage. Similarly, should the King's Hand fall out of favor with the king, he or she can also be replaced.

The Second Position of King's Hand is currently held by Umas Thannerden of House Thannerden.

The Positions of Third through Seventh will vary depending on who the king favors the most but are as follows in no particular order:

Steward of Paths (Conventionally Third Position)- Head of the Pathing Faith and Doctrine as well as Scientific Research and Technology (RESERVED BY Meehrwillow Meehrwillow )

Master of Secrets (Conventionally Fourth Position)- Head of Castle Security, the Gilded Blades, Information Networks and Doctrine regarding the practice of Magicks (RESERVED BY Ghostiiys Ghostiiys )

Premiere (Conventionally Fifth Position)- Head of the Essetarian Military and Foreign Diplomacy (RESERVED BY L0ck0n L0ck0n )

Steward of Coin (Conventionally Sixth Position)- Master of the Treasury, Tax Collection, and Domestic Affairs (Agriculture and Trade)

Chief of the Court (Conventionally Seventh Position)- Head of the King's Court and the Reception Hall, audiences from the High and Low Court and any Foreign Dignitaries (RESERVED BY 606 606 )

For those who are not among the king's court, they are further categorized as follows:

The High Court: Filled by members of the country's most influential nobles and own feudal estates, ruling as local lords for various parts of the kingdom. As such, grievances they have are given first priority and always placed at the top of the list when the king opens his court to receive an audience. They are also permitted to be present on the balconies of the reception hall when the king is receiving guests and foreign dignities but are not permitted to speak.

The Low Court: Filled by members and representatives of the people. If the general populace or the peasantry has any grievances, they must make a plea to a member of the low court and they will, in turn, take these matters to the king's court. These matters are usually received after all matters of the High Court have been resolved and as such, are generally lower in priority.

Given the stiff confines of the class system governing Essetarin society, only the most exceptional individuals of the Low court ever earn a seat in one of the seven positions of the king. The last time it happened, it led to the death of the king and war with the neighboring kingdom of Arasmania to the southwest. It has been many decades since that war and the old generation have nothing more to pass on than the stories of those days and the rule of the Tyrant King, Leopold Esset II, grandfather of the current king. New tension brews between the old guard and the new. There remain skirmishes on the border and the use of magick to great effect in the war has shaken the country's long held prejudice against those who practice such magicks. Much of the continent watches as the country re-emerges from the shadows of war under the leadership of a new king in Leopold Esset III. As members of his court, you are responsible for ensuring the country prospers once more and if you can't, you will have to answer to the king himself. He is cold. He is distant. And he will do everything in his power to ensure Essetaris reclaims what it lost on the world stage.

Please Note! Just because a position is conventionally ordered a certain way does NOT mean that is where you will be at the start of the RP. The king will be looking through your character sheets and order everyone however he sees fit in accordance to who he favors. If you are conventionally ordered in a particular position it just means that you generally advantaged against others in the court positioned under you

is this a first come first serve situation? Or is it dependant on the character sheets , to see who better fits the role

First come first serve on who takes on a certain role BUT what order you will be in will depend on your sheets. For example, if the king likes the Chief Courts and really hates you as a Master of Secrets, he will move the Chief up to sixth position and you down to seventh which mean you have no speaking priorities over the other court members.

The way deliberations over certain issues and topics will go is, King's Hand will always be able to speak first. Seventh position can only speak until AFTER everyone else has spoken but you are further disadvantaged by the fact that after you speak, you must allow everyone else to speak again.

Essentially, the lower you are in the ladder, the less cards you have to play when discussing matters before the king. Every position will have its own advantages and areas of expertise that will give you unique considerations on topics pertaining to your field but if say, a scandal comes out from you as a Master of Secrets for botching a job, its like smelling blood in the water. You are playing defense against a court seeking to knock you down the ladder in order to advance their own position.

Position is a huge part of the king's court and it is unique in its structure, which is why most other countries consider it a strange custom to uphold. Nevertheless there are rules you must follow. It is MUCH harder for a seventh position to challenge the advice and opinion of someone in say, the fourth position. The king will generally favor the fourth position unless you make a much stronger argument

BUMP!

Also,

Developing the history of Essetaris during the reign of King Leopold Esset II and the Esseti-Asman War, including its terrible end with the Honsi Pox plaguing the vast majority of the continent. It has been about 20 years since and Leopold Esset III, who was 11 at the time the war ended is now turning 32. The country is just re-emerging from what the people called the Long Healing and since then, there's been a resurgence of faith among the people and there remains only a few pockets of land that remains to be cleansed of war scars. I'll give more details tomorrow but needless to say, you will all be very busy

whoever picks steward of paths is about to be the most unchecked religious nut with too much power on their hands , i just know it

Yeah the Steward is responsible for the tithes, taxes that do not go to the kingdom, they go straight to the church
