The Premise
This interest check begins like so many others with me smugly telling you that monsters, myth, and magic have been real this whole time. Hiding away. What I don't tell you is that we control and cover up the supernatural, cause that would be a lie. We're supposed to, but it's kind of complicated.
We are The Bureau for Anomalous Research and Control. Or B.A.R.C. for short.
We don't really hide the supernatural. We just make sure it doesn't break parole. Literally.
And we're currently hiring parole officers.

The supernatural world was never kept hidden by some secret order or shadow organization, not really. We never had to hide the supernatural. They hid themselves. Most supernaturals tended to adhere to self-isolating behaviors. For some, it's even tradition to remain hidden. And barring that, they at least knew that being found by the zealous townsfolk just itching for a witch hunt was bad for their life expectancy. For most of human history, supernaturals hid themselves, and they did it well. It was easy. Human beings were busy with their own problems and the average villager often didn't even live long enough or have enough influence to make the occasional run-in an issue.

Yeah we had our mishaps and that's where we got a lot of myths. Even fairy tales have some form of truth to them or their characters. But for the most part, everything was fine. Of course, it didn't stay fine. We'd be out of a job if it did.

As human beings modernized the planet like so many little skyscraper building termites, we literally changed the face of the Earth. We were a simple species for millennia and then in the last few hundred years we went from ox-carts to helicopters. We stopped being afraid of the wilds and started building casinos on deserts and carpet bombing tropical jungles. We started trying to dig up or dig out anything and everything, trying to learn everything. Surveillance, industry, science, war. Everything we did made it harder to stay hidden. The world of magic had to adapt.

Most of them chose to move in with us. Figure out how to hide from us, blend in with us. Or at least stay out of sight.

This creates problems. We've just taken millennia of magic history, inter-group relations, traditions, taboos, internal politics, behavior, and a million other things; and we've forced it to cram itself between our fast food joints and public swimming pools.

Most supernaturals were used to having large swaths of territory or isolation freely available. Now we have situations where we've got rival vampire families who've been fighting for thousands of years living four blocks away from each other. The world of magic snuck into our house and started living in our closet. It wasn't long before somebody found out. And they figured they had to do something to keep one world from disrupting the other. Because most supernaturals don't really like each other...

That's where we come in.

Officially establish in the 1860's, B.A.R.C.'s job is to keep the supernatural world safe from humans and most importantly, from itself. We work with the supernaturals, and even employ many of them in order to maintain a balance in our modern, noisy society. Sometimes whether they like it or not. That's why we've got both a hammer and a key on our badge. You either let us in so we can fix the problem or we break the door down, kick your ass, and then fix the problem.

We do not control the supernatural world (even if the word is in our name). It is too big, spread far too wide, and holds too many variables. What we do is police it. We keep them living where we tell them to live. We keep them from hurting humans. We keep them hidden and invisible. We keep them from turning their presence into a problem. We keep them from killing each other.
And when that fails, we come knocking, we figure out who did it, why, and what we're going to do with them. Believe it or not, crime is still a thing in the supernatural world.
Solving that is your job. You're the ones who go investigating when someone slips up and makes a mess.

And we have a lot of messes.

The Spiel
tldr (But you really should read.): The magic world lives right under our noses and our job is to keep it that way. Sometimes, someone screws up and makes a mess. Gets seen. Gets in trouble. Gets someone killed. We fix that. Simple. The supernatural world creates a problem, we solve the problem. Whether they like it or not.

This RP takes a lot of elements from things like Hellboy's BPRD and franchises like Bill Willingham's Fables.
Players will take the role of Investigators under the B.A.R.C.'s Civic Protection department. That means you'll mostly be handling cases in the areas where the supernaturals are most likely to cause them. Cities, towns, and other highly populated areas. The RP will focus on overcoming problems through investigative methods. Combat may still arise, but won't be a huge focus (that doesn't mean your character can't be good at it). Ask questions. Dig around. Get information. Solve the case. I will literally encourage players to take notes and then use their characters to share these with each other IC.

Characters may come from a variety of backgrounds both mundane and supernatural; variety is encouraged.
The group will be kept small so some manner of scrutiny will be taken with characters that sign up. That means that not everyone who signs up will accepted, but if someone who IS accepted drops, those who weren't may take their place. If a large amount of applications come in, I may look for a co-GM and have two small groups instead. I don't have the exact number of players that will constitute a group, but it will most likely be less than 7.

The reason for the small group is that I prefer tightly knit groups of players who interact often over a small army of players. The cases are also designed to be tackled in small groups, and a large party would leave many players with nothing to do or with 6 people sharing a single lead. Smaller groups tend to function better, both socially IC and with problem solving of this kind. Furthermore, I highly encourage players who sign up to contact each other and myself. Set up pre-existing character dynamics with each other, work together, etc. Small group dynamics are some of the most fun in RP.

Structure will be somewhat episodic, with each new case taking us somewhere else and introducing us to a new situation; but many elements will carry through a central storyline will act as a thread on which to string these "episodes."
Throughout the RP I will encourage interactions between characters, growth between characters, and within characters. I'm likely to take some aside here and there for little growth arcs while the rest of the group continues on something else.

Hopefully there's interest and I looking forward to setting a fun and riveting RP with you all.

This is beyond right up my alley. Definitely interested.

Okay kiddos.
I think we're ready to start character creation. Head on over to the OOC thread here.

There's a second post there for lore, but most of it isn't important and it's left empty for now. I don't want to start actually establishing lore until after we start making characters in order to allow you guys more freedom when writing them up.

If ever it doesn't work out with a character/member, shoot me a PM, yeah? This sounds super interesting! I'll definitely be stalking the thread.
