Hello, thanks for taking the time to have a look at my little idea here. Will give the idea here but if there is sufficient interest I will write up a proper lore piece (mostly because I am still figuring out the smaller details). This weird west post-apocalyptic style adventure story where the world had faced great magical cataclysm and was drastically altered in radical ways and still shifting and changing because of it. The world is patchwork landscapes and climates ranging from the desolate waste to lash rainforests rarely is one any safer than the next. It is not unusual for a landscape to change from an overgrown vision of hell with fire, lava and brimstone to a winter wonderland to a rain forest all in the space of a few miles.

There is only a few small areas where is magically stable enough for the remnants of civilisation to settle in and make a living. Though small nation exist, like the remnants of an empire, the landscape between these settlements is often to dangerous due to monster, mutants, bandits or magic itself so most are city states with their own laws and cultures. The only people who usually venture between settlements are caravans facilitating some trade between town, prospectors trying to pick the bones of the old empire, bandits and adventurers.

Magic users are present but are rare in a sense. It is dangerous to be a mage in this world, their connection to magic means there are more likely to be affected by the magical cataclysm. They either go mad or mutated to grotesque creatures, few have the strength to not be effected. There no formal training for mages unless you are part of the imperial remnant, those outside have to be self taught or what can be scrouged up from the imperial ruins. Be warned though due to the cataclysm and its dangers, mages are not well recieved by most settlement with each having their own ways of dealing with them. Some mages are killed from birth or are no better than beast of burden (those who know what a saarebas will get the idea).

The idea I have with this is a classic adventurer party with a quest. A mage is discovered with the potential ability to reverse the Cataclysm, need to travel to train and learn more of the cataclysm to end it gathering a party in the process. However i am open to suggestions for other ways to do this and always happy to weave in ideas to build the world such as landscapes, cultures and such.

A couple of details I missed:

  1. Feel free to include any fantasy race to this.
  2. The world was in a Industrial Revolution era before the cataclysm. The Empire was a dominant power for centuries and was a mageocracy but the technological progress from the revolution drastically changes this balance of power, leading to uprisings and actual revolutions. The empire was in the brink of collapse and so it is theorized that it was the cause of the cataclysm either by accident or intentionally.

Ok we are up. Lore is still a work on progress.

cowboys and mages and magic? Oh my...
