It's a dying earth fantasy story about making peace with the world. It kicks off in a tower with someone important being kidnapped.

(Note that: someone in the story has long longed for something more.)

And there's a twist! The protagonist was the villain's best friend.

Secondary character: A pickpocket who is misunderstood
