It was the day of the Summer Solstice. Helios was at his peak and the wind’s laughter carried a light breeze through your hair. As with most of the other contestants, you stood at the entrance of Fates Academy, staring up at the glossy, white castle-like structure. A work of art that even Athena herself would be proud of.
Every year, Fates Academy opened its gates to newcomers who wanted a chance to become a Vessel. It didn’t matter if you were forty-nine years old or were six, if you had been chosen by a Being, you had the right to take the exam. People either did it as soon as they were old enough (18) or until they felt ready, or never took it at all. Every year, on June 20th, the new Chosen were able to enter.
The tension could easily be cut with a knife as people sent smiles or glares. Those who were talking were silenced by the creaking of the tall, golden gate and anxieties were raised like rollercoasters. One by one, people entered and began climbing the steps.
It didn’t matter if you were forced by your parents to be here or by your own will, everyone wanted to survive to the end.
