Let's Get This Bread
2020, June

On the Washington coast, in the small logging town of Farpost, summer is beginning. As with many years before, the rain comes down in sheets, threatening to flood the lowland basins once again. In this sleepy town, with only one diner and a wealth of abandoned businesses, they look ahead to another slow, quiet season as even more industries face closures. The town is melancholic, clinging desperately to a past when the town's national park tourism and logging industry drew enough revenue to stay afloat.

It is in this town, with only one school and only one library, that something begins to stir. Something much older than the people of this town, of this nation. It offers "hope" in its simplest form, a chance to revive the town and regain its people's choice to fulfill their dreams. It asks them to consider the price of revival, of ultimate transformation into what they desire. In the form of a visionary from foreign lands, he holds small shows for audiences that leave awe struck. And those few that remember in the coming days, he offers a chance to have all that they desire for the simple price of transmuting things of equal value. Those that meet him rarely remember the encounter, but they know very well that they have agreed to give up something for this prize; a "wishing well", by any name they may know it.

In this small town of Farpost, with only one run-down movie theater, children begin their summer as always. Those that can drive make plans to visit Seattle and Portland. Some take part-time jobs in the businesses that have been run by their families since the town's founding in 1920. Some still take on personal projects to whittle away time in the dying town until they can leave it. Among them are our heroes, residents of Farpost, youth who are just coming to see the reality of the world outside their sleepy village. It is this summer that they will determine the fate of the town and its people, and possibly the world at large.

History:

Name: Isaac "Izzy" Russo
Age: 17
Arcana Represented: XII. Hanged Man
Dream: To become a successful photographer living on the east coast
Interests: Wildlife photography, art history, games of luck and skill, fast food
Fears: His father; both in a physical sense and the force of destruction he represents in his life
Appearance: Isaac is a skinny kid with outdated clothing, though he wears it with a pride that makes one wonder if he actually has to shop at thrift stores or is a true heir of the bohemian lifestyle. He always has some kind of mismatched, bizarre clothing and thick-framed glasses that make his young looking face look all the younger. He can be easily identified by short-cropped brown hair and freckles, as well as his strong Italian nose.
History: Around the age of six, Isaac moved to Farpost's premier trailer park housing with his mother and younger brother. Nobody knew their exact origins, but given their situation it was pretty obvious that they were fresh out of a bad situation and starting over where they could afford to live. They fit naturally into the town, quickly coming to own a record store that thrived in Isaac’s early life. That is, until things slowed down in Farpost.
In the years since, Isaac watched as his mother spiraled from newfound confidence to utter despair as she lost the thing that their family had built in the small town. They were faced with a deadline: Make all the owed rent by August or the store closes. Locals of course want to support Marcy, but the Russos know very well that it would take a miracle to make that money back. And naturally, if his mother can’t afford to live without his assistance, Isaac will likely miss his chance to leave home for college and start his career. With heavy hearts, they both prepare for the worst while they give it their last effort: He picking up shifts and seeking a miracle, and she accepting the kind offer of an imposing stranger.

Name: Apep, The Serpent, Jormungandr, Ouroboros
Age: ???
Arcana Represented: The Magician
Dream: To end Farpost's curse
Interests: Apep is fascinated with human culture, always more than willing to trade magical secrets for mundane knowledge
Fears: Hawks, mongooses, other natural predators
Appearance: Apep, in the mortal plane, is a king snake with bands of white, black, and red. He has large, curious eyes and is about six feet in length. Within liminal spaces, Apep is a much more frightening size, growing to a full 18 feet in length with a similarly large width. Bizarrely, he also wears a headdress with cloth cobra hood and golden chain veil. For reasons that are left completely to the imagination, he is also known to wield poisoned daggers in battle.
History: Apep formed as a small, frightened thing at the border between reality and unreality. He observed as humans were lured into deals that took them across the border and steeped the town of Farpost in tragedy. Apep watched as human beings were lead by their greed into the underworld, where what they desired cost them their souls. It has been quite some time since he first began, stationed as an observer between worlds. This summer, as with every 10 years, the veil is weak and there seem to be far more souls approaching than the off years. This time, as his first chance in a decade, Apep has resolved to find the entity responsible and end his vile designs.
