Partner wanted for dystopian cyberpunk crime duo

Hey, everyone. So this is actually my first time throwing a pitch out here, but to make a long story short, I'm basically looking for a partner to run through an original action-based cyberpunk RP with. I myself am new to forum-based RP, so please be willing to have a little patience in that regard. I still have good availability with posting and am committed to making this work though. So without further ado, my pitch:

Plot

The year is 2134. The withering arcology of the now-defunct Zedat corporation looms over the lower tiers of Irinas City. This building now houses tens of thousands of blacklisters, the sociopolitical underclass of this new society, composed of individuals deemed unemployable by the megacorporations that dominate the regional economy and political system. Citizens may find themselves blacklisted by way of domestic crimes, political radicalism, contract defection, bankruptcy, contraband possession, corporate whistleblowing, espionage, theft, and various other offenses. The life of a blacklister is a meager one, filled with hardships both material and existential. Most struggle to provide a subsistence income for themselves scavenging, trading, stealing, dealing, or working a variety of other odd jobs within their confines of their slum communities. This is the story of two such individuals, (A) and (B). With their normal income streams starting to run dry and no hope of ever returning to the lives they left behind, the two now find themselves facing eviction with few options in sight.

However, (A) has acquired a network module which will allow them to connect to and register on ZEROGROUNDS, a new darknet marketplace which puts assassins, debt collectors, hackers, smugglers, saboteurs, weapons dealers, and a variety of other professional criminals in contact with clients who contract their services while providing minimum disclosure. The origins of the site are unknown, and many public authorities refuse to officially acknowledge its existence. But under this corporate plutocracy where the individual has no value beyond their immediate usefulness to the powers that be, the two may yet carve out a better a better life for themselves by surviving the deadly contracts of the ZEROGROUNDS.

Writing style:

I consider myself a reasonably skilled writer, but this is actually my first time at the forum RP rodeo and I figure a premise like this is fairly safe because even if an amazing plot arc or incredible character chemistry never develops, there's still room to have fun with some gritty sci-fi action scenes. Still, I enjoy a fairly well-rounded storytelling experience, so if we want to have some more downbeat scenes of the characters celebrating or laying low after a job, that could be cool too. I am completely fine with a partner who has a very "standard" or "commercial" writing voice, but I am going to request that any prospective partners should feel comfortable writing at a young adult level and are willing to deal with subject matter at a similar level. Please be willing to use third-person present tense in narration and descriptive prose. No onomatopoeia or action markers, please.

It seems that opinions on what this means vary, but I would say that we should be shooting for "casual" territory with respect to writing length. As an action-oriented story, this should have a fairly quick and brisk "call and response" feel at times, but I think that a paragraph or so of some nice descriptive prose can really breathe a lot of life into a scene. More detailed posts are welcome, but please try to save it for the bigger moments. Moments of altered perception like when a character's pain inhibitor cybernetics pump them full of dopamine after an injury, or when a character uses a neural jack to mentally interface with some piece of technology are good moments to slow things down and put some thicker imagery out there, but this isn't necessary. While I request that any prospective partners come with competent writing abilities, I still intend for this to be a relatively easy story to write. I'm also not particularly interested in there being a romantic dimension between the two player characters, but feel free to have a romantic aspect to your character backstory if you enjoy that.

Setting

So until this point, I've mostly left the setting intentionally vague so that my partner could have a hand in crafting some of the locales and other elements. In most respects, it's a fairly standard cyberpunk setting in the style of Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Snow Crash, Ghost in the Shell, etc. Notable social problems include overpopulation, pollution, rampant commercialism, declining workers' rights, economic and political instability, and growing ethical concerns over cybernetics, experimental biotechnology, telepresence systems (drones), information privacy, AI technology, public surveillance, and so forth.

While this isn't a worldbuilding-centric game, feel free to improv some background lore for the world using in-character dialog. For example, instead of providing a huge info dump about every political faction in the region, a character could just say something like "You know, I can buy into the Progressive Technocratic Party's policy on labor rights, but their AI spokesperson makes my goddamn skin crawl." Enough to provide a little bit of richness to the world without needing to get too rigorous.

Characters

This is another aspect of the RP I've decided to leave relatively open. So long as it's genre and stylistically appropriate, I'd say that I'm pretty open-minded regarding character concepts. Most characters in this world will have at least one form of cybernetic enhancement and will be technologically fluent in at least a few domains, so the character dynamic should be a little more nuanced than just "the fighter" and "the tech guy." If you would like to play a completely artificial character such as an android or robot, then that would be fine too, just try to have a loose background in mind that explains why they have found themselves blacklisted. And given the darker, more oppressive nature of the setting, a few weaknesses and character flaws are important to keep in mind too. Even characters from a highly-skilled background would still find themselves disadvantaged due to their economic hardships in this setting. For example, an ace hacker might still have to contend with cheap, low-end hardware, or a biker's motorcycle may usually be lacking some much-needed repairs.

Since obsolescence is a theme of cyberpunk, seriously consider integrating it into your character concept. A character who was once an elite corporate bodyguard fitted with experimental combat cybernetics that were immediately discontinued before the first commercial production run because of a design flaw is a much more nuanced character background than some generically overpowered elite cyborg super soldier. Vengeance-oriented backstories are welcome, but not necessary. Some relatively unsympathetic character flaws are welcome too, but not to the extent that it grinds the game to a halt or just makes it feel overbearingly spiteful.

And that's my pitch up until this point. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please let me know below. I am totally open to OOC discussions about the direction of the plot or any other details related to the RP. Thanks for looking!

Very interested. If you are looking for partners still, I can be active every day. Do I post my cs here, or pm you when the site allows me? Don't worry, I still have experience in RP. Literate in the normal sense.

Thanks for your interest. I actually haven't found a partner for this game yet and would totally be willing to try and get the ball rolling in on it. If you can't PM me due to the new account restrictions, we could just kick around ideas here if you like. Got any ideas for your character or anything else you'd might like to discuss?

I have some time for RPing, but I'm also out of town until the end of Saturday, so I might be on and off until that time. I would be open to starting off the game soon if that's acceptable, but if you would rather take some time to discuss ideas and prep and then roll out with a stronger start, then I would be totally fine with that too.

How is the origin of the duo? Were they blacklisted together due to a joint crime, or do they meet on the ZEROGROUNDS page? Or something else...

I'm honestly pretty open on this point. One possibility I was considering is that the characters are essentially roommates living in an apartment together rented under a stolen identity, either blacklisted independently or together (I'm open to collaborating on character backgrounds if you have any interesting ideas here, could make good character development fodder). A character background that would essentially be tantamount to blacklisting even without the legal status proper could work too, such as if one of the characters was a prototype android that somehow escaped and is being pursued by the corporation that built it.

Having characters who were blacklisted for some very minor offense and are reluctant to dive into the deep end of contract crime might add a better sense of character progression because they can start out small only to eventually find themselves way in over their heads, but I'm still open to playing a character who is more of an experienced criminal as well. I imagine that in this world, most people who find themselves blacklisted would at least be acquainted with a few criminals given what their communities are like, so if we want to have a dynamic where one character is a bit more docile while the other is more violent and unhinged, that could be interesting too.

I could play a reluctant style character, though probably not an android. Perhaps they had their hand forced into doing some illicit crime that got them blacklisted, and now must work on paying off their employer by doping assigned task. Being a hardened criminal does sound like it has perks, though I wouldn't be a huge brute, but more of an analytical kind of person.

I could also play as an experienced blacklist, being committed before character B is listed as well. This way, we have a gateway to explaining where and how we got the network module for ZG, since a criminal such as that would have at least some knowledge of where the hardware can be obtained.

Either one of those sounds good with me. I'd say just go with whichever character concept works that you find most appealing. But yeah, it could be pretty challenging to get into the mindset of an android or AI character. I feel like in order to get the most out of that character dynamic, the other character would probably have to be some kind of technician type. I'm probably just going to go with a human character (with cybernetics, of course).

As far as obtaining the ZG module goes, I figured the intro could consist of one character returning home from scavenging or trading and they could have it as part of their (otherwise meager) haul. The specifics of how they got the module could be written into the story (maybe a courier was supposed to deliver it elsewhere and they ended up dead or missing) or it could be left somewhat unexplained for now. Maybe they don't even know what it is when they first get it. Or maybe some other character hears about their money problems and just gives it to them.

Do you have a preference regarding what consumer tech looks like in this world? One possibility I was considering is having contemporary tech like tablets, smartphones, desktops, etc. co-existing with the fictional genre staple pieces of tech like cyberdecks, which users directly interface with using neural jacks and operate at the speed of thought. This could give us some everyday tech to interact with in situations where neurally interfacing with a piece of tech might come off as totally overkill. Alternatively, we could go straight 80s cyberpunk like Neuromancer or something and have the fictional gadgets be the only form of technology in the world.

I would love the cybernetic, far-out tech being integrated in our norm; advanced smartphone, extremely powerful computers for consumer level, and other staples of media. As for the neural jacks, I can see that as being a huge thing in police, military, and the shady end of the ZG.

Course, due to the poor conditions of blacklisted communities, I'm planning on seeing some jury-rigged cyberdecks and pitter-patter hardware for most criminals. As for how the module is acquired, if you are planning on being the fresher blacklistee, perhaps you can acquire it as part of your scrap haul, and I'll recognize it, or something along those lines.

I would love to see older, low-level hardware jury-rigged by blacklisted alongside cyberdecks. As for how the module is acquired, if you are playing the newer listed, you could acquire it in a scrap-haul, and when you bring back to the den, I'd recognize it as a kind of module, and try to run it on a homemade cyberdeck. My character's background will probably involve tech in some way.

How about the clothing? Is that a nondescript detail that can be fodder in dialogue?

Yeah, this sounds pretty in-line with what I had in mind. Obviously a cyberpunk setting provides a lot of opportunities to play with some pretty wild tech, so I can take my suspension of disbelief pretty far so long as a certain piece of tech can make for a really good scene or plot point. If we have a scene where the characters are trying to infiltrate a military database, that could be a good opportunity to jack into an 80s style representation of cyberspace as this quasi-physical realm where Black ICE or surveillance AIs are trying to hunt them down. The consequences of getting taken out in cyberspace could range from being knocked unconscious and taking a few minutes to recover, to major brain damage or death (depending on the intensity of the opposing ICE/AIs). Maybe some clients want to discuss the details of a job in an encrypted "room" in cyberspace that conceals their identity. But for something comparatively mundane, a common text, email, or phone call might suffice. If you'd like to introduce a new piece of tech or something and need to explain how it works, feel free to mention it OoC if you feel that's easier

Feel free to write about it if you like, but clothing isn't a huge consideration for me unless it plays some role in the world or defining your character. If your character has pretty common clothing and you don't feel it's worth mentioning then that's fine. But if your character was, say, a member of the Black Cobra motorcycle gang and they usually wear their embroidered jumpsuit that clearly identifies them as a member of this gang, then I think that would bear mentioning. So feel free to go as nondescript or unique as you like in that sense.

If you would like to have your character be the one who generally takes charge of the decking and software, then that's totally fine and I can base my character around complementing that. Like I mentioned in the original post, technology is pretty wide field in this world, so a more combat-oriented character could be skilled in biotechnology/first aid, vehicles, weapons with support for neural links, and other pieces of hardware that make sense for the character. And like you just said, low-end and slapdash tech is going to be a hurdle for any impoverished character in this world. A character might still be able to pull of some pretty amazing feats even in spite of their hardware limitations, but there are still very dangerous people out there who are vastly better equipped, so there will be plenty situations where the characters just want to get the job done and escape with their lives.

Sounds great. It seems like you have a great grasp of the beginning plot and where it should go. There are so many roles for each character, so I can't wait to see yours. The whole physical realm sounds neat, and will probably kick a bit of action forward. If we need to add changes after you make the thread, we can always use ooc. Drop a link to it whenever!

Glad you like it! I imagine I'll have some free time throughout the week to RP this, but I may disappear here and there as other things that demand my attention in-person come up. Pretty sure I can have a character drafted up by like tomorrow though, already have quite a few character concepts in mind for this setting. So maybe once our character sheets are filled out and if we feel good about the beginning of the plot, then we can kick this off relatively soon.

I'm fairly committed to this idea and should be able to put out at least a post a day barring unusual circumstances, even while being presently out of town. But I'm also pretty understanding about time restrictions from other players so long as there's good communication.

I can usually get on every day, though I have seasonal work on some days in June, starting Saturday. But I'm as ready as you are.

Cool, sounds good. Well chances are I'll get back to this thread with my character sheet sometime tomorrow, probably sooner rather than later. After that we can probably kick off a thread in the 1x1 section and get things rolling. I'm using a tablet until Saturday, so my formatting options might be a little limited, but I didn't plan on using any special BBCode for this RP or anything.

Alright. I'm using a tablet as well, so no sweat. Good night, and I'll be ready for that cs.

Got a character sheet drafted up. I went ahead and added a gear section to have some starting equipment, but it's still very outdated or impractical stuff, so feel free to do the same if you prefer. I figured if a job requires some high-end gear, we could rent, borrow, or steal it. I imagine that gear from authorities figures like military, police, and corporate security could have biometric locks and tracking that makes it impossible or risky to just take from fallen enemies without cracking the security mechanisms first.

Name: Tanya Walker

ZG Alias: Guardrail

Age: 29

Appearance: She is a broad-shouldered and statuesque woman with a short mop of black hair. A deep laceration scar extends from above her right eyebrow down her cheek. Her riding gear consists of an orange full-faced helmet with a clear visor, a padded orange ballistic jacket, black kevlar gloves, black riding pants, and a pair of polymer-coated black riding boots. While at home or working at the shop, she tends to wear a black tank top or an oil-stained beige boiler suit.

Enhancements: Reflex accelerator, Optics system w/ HUD overlay (Aviator-shaped reflective amber lenses), Polymer bone lacing, Neural uplink, Pilot/Driver AR software package

Gear: ’93 Hase Club Deluxe Motorcycle, Aspekt T26e Flechette Pistol, Viper (custom motor-actuated three-section staff)

Occupation: Mechanic

Blacklist offense: Loan delinquency, contraband possession (imitation pharmaceuticals)

So basically she's a motorcyclist with cybernetics and gear that make her relatively well-suited for fighting, but she's more of a street fighter type than some kind of soldier. I don't have any kind of serious gamg or criminal background in mind for her, but I imagine her background as a blacklister, mechanic, and street racer could at least give her some criminal acquaintances. I have a backstory in mind regarding her blacklisting and I could just explain it OoC or explain it in-character during the RP depending on what you'd prefer.

My digital illustration skills are pretty weak, but I may draw out simple reference diagrams for gear later on like I did with the flechette gun just to give a slightly better sense of how I imagine things look in this world.

Name: Milus Deanil

ZG Alias:Bitcode

Age:34

Appearance:Milus is a slim built, 6' male with archingly sharp features of the jawline and nose. His cheeks and eyes are shallow, and his pale complexion a sign of his years behind a computer. He appears older than he actually is due to creases formed by stress and strain. Cuts, permanent marks, and other scars occasionally pepper his back and torso, while a slim, white scar traces his left jaw. When on an errand, he'd wear an aged duster, light brown and stained, over a dark tunic, made of a dense material. His pants are multi-pocketed utility style, made for use more than style and comfort. For his easier days, he'd wear jeans and a solid color T-shirt.

Enhancements:Corporate neural implant, observational module in his left eye(to provide basic info of something in his view.), and a hydraulic brace inside his right knee.

Occupation:Freelance, mostly info-transfers between clients.

Blacklist offense:Corporate espionage.

Milus is a computer tech guy with a few years of being blacklisted under his belt. He did the corporate espionage for money, which I'll explain in rp. He wasn't a hardened criminal before being blacklisted, and isn't currently affiliated with any large group. His back story defines where he got his education and why he did the said crime. I inane our characters will discuss their past in RP, it'll make good dialogue.

Don't worry about drawings so much; I have a vivid imagination.

Lookin' good with the character sheet. I can try to cook up an intro post soon if you're ready. Probably just going to go with a brief scene to establish some atmosphere. We could go with the intro where I return to the apartment with the module, or if you have some other ideas then we could do that.

Sounds good. If your intro post establishes the atmosphere while your character obtains and brings back the module, my first post will describe the apartment building of Zedat and the local community.

Drop a link whenever.

Will do. I imagine I'll have something up within the evening. I'll probably try to end my post by approaching or entering the building from the street level so we can smoothly segue into an scene together after your post.

Sounds neat. I'm building my post in the shop now. I'll edit whatever after your evening post.

Got a thread up here. The intro dialog is a little terse, but I decided it would be better to keep it relatively light until we're in a scene together.

I guess you have to petition a mod to get new tabs added to the RP, so I'll try to get tabs for the character sheets and OoC added soon.

I see you've already engaged in a story with another roleplayer, so of course I understand if you'd decline my offer. In case you're still up for the idea, I'm very interested. There's a tiny issue, though: you see, I could say cyberpunk is probably the most difficult genre for me to work on, because I'm not particularly big on sci-fi movies or books, so I'm quite simply inexperienced on most of the themes and tropes of the genre. To put it briefly, I really know little to nothing about the basic technology any regular cyberpunk story would have, but that just makes me all the more curious as to what it's all about, how to go about writing it, and really immersing myself in the concept.

So if you happen to be patient enough with me, and of course, you're still open, I'd be very much interested in your plot idea. If you think this one in particular would just not be the right plot to plunge myself for the first time into cyberpunk, that's also quite alright. Just let me know!

@TheCreator

Hey there, thanks for your interest. Yes, I am already moving along this story with another player and it looks like I'll also be starting some other cyberpunk-esque RPs soon, so part of me is reluctant to commit to yet another one. However, I have enjoyed developing this setting and I wouldn't be opposed to re-using it in another story if need be. Right now I'm at a point where I've got a handful of RPs in the formative stages, but I'm currently participating in only two active RPs. So I'm probably going to be slow-going on the planning of any new RP ideas for the time being, but I'm reasonably confident I should be able to commit to new RPs once they actually get off the ground.

Are there any aspects of this story that you find appealing from an RP standpoint? I'd say I'm pretty genre-literate in cyberpunk, but I'm open to the idea of playing to someone who doesn't have the same degree of familiarity. It is a fairly open-ended genre for RP and you can take it in a number of directions, some of which entail less of an emphasis on worldbuilding. If you're interesting in doing something ostensibly similar to this, I may have some ideas for tweaking this RP idea and putting it in a setting that isn't as rooted in the traditions of 80s cyberpunk so we can participate with relatively equal standing.
