History​

Background: Immigrated from Mexico at age 5 with his family, bounced around the US until settling in New York with some relatives. Having been subjected to seeing the worst of humanity around him, Valentin has grown a thick skin and has little remorse for the actions he does today. Each kill is retribution for the suffering he faced growing up in the white majority, each bringing him closer to the notoriety he lusts after. Val sees the work he does as art in motion, especially that of murder. No two are the same and he regards each as little more than fodder for a much grander masterpiece. Known to be fiercely vengeful many have deemed Val the “Black Cat” as where he treads many find their end, bad “accidents” befalling those who slight him. A string of lovers, however, cite him as the opposite and many vie for the opportunity to be afforded the fleeting luxury of being Val’s prize. As the legend he crafts grows more grandiose, Valentin trudges on relentlessly to achieve his dreams and prove his worth.

  Essie grew up on the outskirts of Fastov, in the Pale of Settlement of the Russian Empire. To hear her tell it, she had the prototypical bleak Russian childhood–the fifth of eight children, one brother killed fighting the Germans in WWI, a father dead of cholera and a grief-stricken mother who spent most of her days in bed. Fastov was a boring little town where a girl’s only option was marriage, and she moved to America in search of bigger and brighter things.
  
  It’s true, but it leaves out the part where Essie was happy. Her brothers and brother-in-law supported the family, her sister looked after her mother, and Essie cheerfully ruled over her younger siblings, nieces and nephews. She quarreled with the neighbors, flirted with the baker’s sons, supplemented their meals with petty theft in the market, and deliberately ignored all news of war after her older brother Pesakh was killed in battle in 1915. All her worrying hadn’t saved him, so she wouldn’t waste time worrying anymore. Russia fought the Germans. Russia fought itself. Essie refused to care.
  
  Then all of a sudden, Fastov wasn’t Russia anymore. Fastov was Ukraine, and Russia was invading, and a series of vicious massacres against Jews tore through the countryside. The White Army reached Fastov in September, weeks after Essie’s 19th birthday. Of all her family, she was the only one to survive.
  
  It took a year, all told, to get to America, and on the way Essie got tired of people looking at her with pity when she told her story. By the time she arrived on Ellis Island, she’d perfected the art of lying about a dull epidemic that had left her orphaned but unscathed. She ended up sleeping on the floor of her distant cousin Sam, a small-time burglar who appreciated Essie’s pick-pocketing skills. Sam sold their ill-gotten goods to a variety of criminals, and it was through him that Essie first encountered Miss Coco.

She was everything a girl could dream of being, at least, if one was a particular kind of girl. Say, a girl who’d seen her whole family massacred and only barely managed to kill one soldier with a butcher knife. Essie fell in love instantly.
  
  She figured if she couldn’t be Miss Coco, she might at least get close to her. So armed with an English phrasebook and moxie, she turned up at the Fox Hole and asked if they might be hiring a waitress, one who knew the value of discretion.
