  • To keep themselves from being forgotten, the gods of the near shore made a choice. One that changed the fate of humanity forever. It started with Akani, the god of song and dance, who made herself known to humans by putting on short plays for them in a small quarter of Osaka.

As more and more humans came to watch her, many of the younger, shrineless gods followed suit. Some made paintings that no human could rival, or inspired art and had their names put on the finished product. Others became the faces of companies they helped create. A god of vanity went into the business of advertising, and now his face is displayed on billboards, showing off a new brand of toothpaste. Humanity was forced to acknowledge the existence of gods beyond prayer and folktales. Once Akani's popularity grew to the point where she was performing on stage, gods became something normal for humanity. Knowledge of them and the regalia that accompanied him became commonplace.

And because of this, humanity became more dependent on gods. Knowing they were real meant that they were expected to answer when prayed to, expected to come when called. If a god didn't answer, humans would just move onto a god who would, instead of having faith that they were listening. Humanity came to expect gods to do whatever was asked of them, even if they could do it themselves.

A few voiced their dissent over how much humanity was relying on gods to do things they used to be able to do themselves. The few became many, and a group called Dawn was born. Dawn makes no secret of the fact that they dislike gods. Their goal is to bring the world back to how it was before gods came into their lives, even if they have to go to extreme measures to do it.

In this world, gods are commercialized, and the most popular near shore deities are treated like celebrities.

Most gods of the far shore have cut ties and turned their backs on those of the near shore for disrupting humanity.

Most humans still can't see phantoms, but are aware that gods protect them from corruption.

That’s an option, but I was thinking more gods/regalia against the growing opposition to them.

Oh, that's cool too. Time to think of potential gods then. We can make them up right, or shall we research more on actual deities of Shintoism?

Interested if spots are still open.
