Moddies were formed through Pre-Birth Modification(PBM). PBM was a thing for about five years, making over half of kids born in that period moddies. This means there are approximately 437,000,000 moddies worldwide. PBM has been banned by world governments, making the procedure itself illegal. Consequences include jail time and huge fines.
Moddies are required to inform their employers of their status, which can be legally used to deny them a job. This discrimination had caused many moddies to repress their abilities as best they can and essentially lie to their employers in order to land a job. Since the only identification given to a moddie to identify them as such is a special form given at birth, it is relatively simple to pretend that one is normal. However, should a moddie give reason for an employer to dig up records, they would be found out and likely fined.
There are some jobs that allow moddies to work openly, but they are hard to find, most just lie.
The abilities of moddies are not physical; they lie somewhere hidden within the altered DNA. Scientists cannot yet explain just how these abilities work, and there has been nothing to suggest that moddies' abilities should be used to their full potential in terms of technological and military endeavors. Everyone just wants to forget they ever existed.
With the ambiguity of the time period, we can say that technology isn't totally past what we have now. We still can't go lightspeed, we don't have lightsabers, and robots aren't sentient. Technology is more sophisticated and minimalistic than before, and phones have been replaces by Rings. As common as smartphones are today, Rings are worn on all ten fingers and can produce holographic displays by clenching and releasing a fist. The rings are simple silver bands, and cost has been reduced to where almost everyone can afford them. Internet is universal now; there is no more wi-fi as we know it. You can get online no matter where you are(yay!).
Rings can track your physical health and location, and because of them, the world is more connected than ever. As mentioned previously, the rings are activated by clenching and releasing a wrist on either hand. Using both hands would create a larger screen, but it would require one to hold both hands before them.
