It is the Year 727, not AD, not BC, but some other calendar. And many would argue with the proper date is, whether the current calendar is the rightful one. Does it really matter? It is a dark age, a feudal era. The land is without a King. Lord fight one another over matters of land, wealth, vendetta, vanity, or whatever excuse comes to mind. The land suffers. But much as in a legend in the Time Before Time, there is a prophecy that one day, a leader would draw forth the Sword of Destiny from the Stone and unite the land.

Once a year in early Spring knights from all lands come to the Stone. A tournament is held, tests of arms, and the victors are given a chance to draw the sword....

Sounds like a familiar tale? I shall explain.

Long ago men lived in a world where dwellings reached far into the sky. They used great magic (electricity) to turn night into day. They created great weapons that rivalled the powers of Heaven and Hell. Then their magic faded from the world and their great civilization perished. Many believed that they were destroyed for their corruption. Man fell upon dark times.

Now to translate this into modern terms so that it might make a little more sense. In the 21st century some new technology was unleashed that eradicated electricity. Without this one vital element of civilization the world could no longer support its teeming billions. The land was plunged into darkness. Chaos ensued, followed by the Four Horsemen (war, famine, plague and pestilence)..

It has been over 2000 years.

Eventually the population began to stabilize. Some technologies never quite faded. Gunpowder is still around. But the techniques to mass produce advanced metal alloys has been lost, as has mass production. Guns have reverted to the days of muskets and flintlocks.

Language has evolved over time. Imagine how different English was in the 1400’s. Then compare to today. It has been at least 3 times that long.

The role of women has reverted to the second class stereotype. It is rare for a woman to fight, often not accepted. (This varies highly by the local feudal lord. Slavery is very common.)

Mages: These are generally charlatans. Faith healing is common enough, but works about as well as it ever did. People just believe magic is dead or almost dead. Every now and then someone reports a miracle. And, of course, there is the Sword.

About the Characters

The Lady - this is to be YOUR character.

Option A - She will be from the 21st century herself. I strongly advise a single woman with few connections to her past. She has no idea how she arrived. She should be tough as nails. Good professions for her to com from would be a US Marine, perhaps a stuntwoman, etc. In other words she should have the skill to pass herself off as a knight, or a solid start. And she should have the soul of a decent leader.

Option B - Local woman. This could be the daughter and only child of a knight or better yet a weaponsmith. (Weaponsmiths would be one of the few classes allowed to handle a weapon.)

The Mage - Yep, that me. Except I am not some old guy. I look more like I am in my early 20’s, standing 6’9” and built like a mighty knight. But I do dress in the stereotypical cloak. No staff either. But I do have a walking stick and a limp.

Plot
Someone has to draw the Sword, right? My mage doesn’t want to draw it.
