The Kingdom of Rotia was far from a place that most would travel to in the realm willingly. The reasons for this were apparent. The land was so close to the dark continent and experienced regular monster raids. The climate was known for being particularly unforgiving in the winter due to how North they were located.

The Kingdom’s economy was powered by conflict and many turned to monsters slaying to make a living in this land. Under a Queen who ran an autocracy, while it wasn’t the safest or freest place to live in the realm, there was still room to profit and live well if you had the right skill sets, as well as resources of interest.

The more people strayed away from civilization things became progressively more dangerous. Thankfully there were some portals spread out throughout the Kingdom’s land which could take people near entrances of many of these population locations throughout Rotia. One of these portals was located near the border wall of Evergate Rampart.

By the waystation portal area was a group of six guards who were there to keep watch. They were wearing metallic armor, and had pikes as well as short swords by their hands. The helmets covered their faces, and the metallic armor was heavier.

Portal Waystation Structure

For one reason or another, travelers today would go near a place formally known as Evergate Rampart.
It was well fortified place.
Evergate Entrance

The walls were tall and made of wood and stone. There were some watch towers sprinkled far apart on the walls with archers in place scattered around the perimeter as well.

Near the entrance of the border wall parallel from one another on either side of the entrance were two people in their monster combat ready mechas, Rotia’s crest was very visible on the center of their chest pieces, distinguishing them from independent adventurer pilots. The ornate nature of the mecha build suggested that they were royal guard, which was rather unusual to see in a place like Evergate.
Gate Guards
haiyang-sun-f4-copy.jpg

“Don’t you think it’s a bit of a waste of our talent to be stationed out in the middle of nowhere like this just because of some event that’s going on? ” the guard on the left side asked, with a decidedly male sounding and mix of boredom and annoyance in his voice.

“Raul, you and I both know why we were sent here.” The identical one turned to him and said, with a decidedly more feminine sounding voice.

“So what, just because someone starts some rumors we need to raise every alert in the Kingdom?” Raul replied, sounding unimpressed.

A sigh would come from the unnamed one,. “You can never be too careful in Rotia. I know that’s something that’s been engraved in your skull since we were little.”

Close to the guards were a set of black orbs which were appraising people who wished to enter the gate as an extra precautionary step.

----
Past the entrance was a main cobblestone road which had wooden arrow signs written in common and Terran directing people toward places of interest such as the church, Main Street, recruitment office and other buildings of importance. These directions guide signs were spread out as were the pathways which broke off from the main path.

There was a certain [Beast] waiting to the side of this main path, who was looking out and waiting for a certain [Beast]. He was currently tapping his foot, moving his tail about, every now and again glancing around. With him was a leather satchel, whatever was inside was hidden from view. He seemed to be relatively low key with not many people paying him mind other than the occasion glance, but his attire suggested that he was of an upperclass perhaps. Regardless he was staying quiet,

On the interior the rampart itself was an imposing castle fort-like structure which towered over the land. In its proximity was a barracks, a training area, mess hall and other amenities specifically for soldiers which was segregated from the rest of the circular wall in the area, all located as far north as the walls would allow.
The dungeon where criminals were being held under lock and key was directly under the fort in a guarded underground expanse.

There were many modest sized structures on the exterior ring closest to the outer walls and inward toward the center with thatched medieval style roofs;a residential area.

miio-50.jpg

Closer to the center of the walled off circle was a modest sized stone church building dedicated to Valcorism.
Not far away from the church was a main street which had some businesses such as a black smithery, engineer workshop, general goods store, tavern with rooms for rent , and a magic shop. Every now and again people came and went along the paths, about their business. As normal as the activity looked it had become apparent that there was a certain tenseness in the air which was unusual to say the least. This main street eventually led into a town square which had a clearing of sorts, with a wooden platform with stairs to the side and there were a few people idling about.
----
Kane Blackburne
crop.jpg

Kane was actually one of these people. He leaned against the wood, with his executioner ax in hand. Every now and again he looked behind him to the administration building which was prominent in the square, with the royal crest once again plastered outside of it on a large vertical flag banner hanging on either side of the steps up to the entrance.

He knew it would only be a matter of time before people would start to gather out of a variety of reasons ranging from knowing those whose time was up to just out of pure curiosity. That was understandable. He didn’t have much else planned that day; this was a big occasion after all, and he wanted to get this done with as soon as possible since it would mean he would finally be officially ready to act in his role in society which was exciting.

Despite his inner thoughts his resting face almost appeared bored, watching people go by in the distance, even with this tenseness in the air, people hurrying along more than usual, whispers here and there. Even some of the guards milling about looked like their mind was elsewhere. Kane conversely was as chill as a cucumber he wasn’t convinced anything more exciting was going to happen beyond his task today. Of course there was always the chance of a monster attack in Rotia, but with the latest reports it sounded like the surrounding area was clear enough.

The look of boredom eventually went away from his face however as he saw a pair going at it not far in the distance in the square while they walked. They looked well off, and it wasn't so often you got to see this kind of drama in public for that kind of class a bit of a smirk starting to form on Kane's face as he observed and listened in.

"You know she isn't the true and honest Eliza!" A male with an amulet, white forehead piece, and a hooded tunic proclaimed, he had a short sword at his side. His facial expression suggested agitation and his body language was defensive.

"Knowing this is true, I have to do what I can, it's for the good of the kingdom, no matter the risk involved. Ranthor and Varek smile favorably upon us. Now is the time for action, the signs are all there!"

The youthful woman also wore white and blue, It was all rather lavish and warm appropriate for the weather, providing multiple layers throughout in her dress.

"You must't meddle in affairs as serious as these! You have no idea what you're getting yourself or others into! Taltons have maintained our position in this Kingdom for years by doing what we know works best, and I can assure you this path isn't going to lead to anything good no matter how noble you think it may be!" Her words took on a tone of alarm, while they were stern that was almost a quality of pleading to what she said.

Gyld Aza Lyrakien had heard tales of the Kingdom of Rotia, and although the place seemed far from welcoming, he was curious to see what opportunities it might hold for a creature such as himself. With his unique connection to the forest and his natural prowess, he thought he might find a way to make a living in this land of danger and monsters.

He had traveled for many days to reach the portal near Evergate Rampart, and upon arriving, he noticed the six guards clad in metallic armor, standing watch. Gyld knew he would stand out, being a rare owl bear, but he confidently strode forward, his sleek body gliding gracefully as he entered the Kingdom.

As he moved past the entrance, Gyld followed the cobblestone road, taking note of the wooden arrow signs pointing to various places of interest. His attention was drawn to the [Beast] waiting by the side of the main path. Curious about the well-dressed creature and his hidden satchel, Gyld decided to approach him.

"Greetings," Gyld said, his voice a mix of a deep growl and a hoot. "I am Gyld Aza Lyrakien, an owl bear from the forests beyond. May I inquire about your presence here and what you carry in that satchel?"

Her mission, finding the truth about titles, had taken her into a very dangerous territory. For one, it'd taken her to one of the most dangerous countries on the continent. The Kingdom of Rotia. There were enough monsters rumoured to be roaming around here. It was also pretty darn cold. To make matters worse, she was out here to investigate a very sensitive thing. Criminal titles. She knew those were used by the people in power to have a real and measurable influence, but to what extend? She'd heard some rumours. Humans could be killed in the the See, without it granting criminal titles. She'd learned the sea-folk could steal from land-folk without it being criminal. Those two things alone suggested that someone, something, or some people, were manipulating what was legal for each area. She wanted to know. Who was doing that? How were they doing it? How did these criminal titles function?

With that as a goal, she learned of the Kingdom's autocracy. That was ideal. In a place like that, the relation between power and criminal titles might be the most direct. The least subtle out of all options. The clearest to investigate. She'd want to know how this queen decided to set the rules for criminal titles, if she even did so at all. For the sake of protecting herself from both common dangers in Rotia as well as from the dangers she'd incur whilst on her title researching quests, she'd called upon two friends. Rachael and Orchid. The only thing better than having one of them as her guard was having both of them as her guards. She'd given some brief details on her reason for going to the Kingdom and on the dangers she expected, but that would be about it. She hadn't shared a more concrete plan through letters alone. You'd never know who else might see those, after all. Still she hoped they'd show up to begin with. Otherwise, she'd have to rely on her speed and wits alone. Not that those were anything to scoff at.

She'd gone past the Mecha's with a wide arch. Those things were too big. Everything was already towering over her, but those things... That was just compensating for something. Strength, most likely, but still. They were just so gigantic she felt she might just end up in a 'death by mecha misstep' incident if she'd got near them. There was no way she'd die in such a manner! Having made it into the place, she looked around. Cold. Kind-off boring. Honestly, she had no solid reason to be in Evergate of all places. She'd just caught wind of some things that might happen here and well... stuff happening might mean stuff to investigate. Stuff to investigate might be related to criminal titles to investigate.

Okay, fair, she knew she was stretching it really far, but surely if she just kept her eyes and ears open, she'd catch something solid soon enough.

That she did.

With her Heightened Senses, she'd picked up a fun sounding conversation between two white-haired folk. She lit up her pipe, inhaling the smoke through her lungs. Whooo.... smoking was so nice. Finally able to breath in life after not being able to do so in that underwater place was great. With her longs filled with smokey courage, she headed up to the two white-haired folk. “Good day.” She'd say, heading up to them to try using [Ultimate Detective C] on the both of them. She wasn't shy to get closer to them to do so, as by now, she learned her child-like appearance made people less weary of her. One of the few benefits of being a halfling.

“You two sound like you're getting involved into something interesting, which is good. I'm Victorique Sopheana, professional investigator. Unless my senses betrayed me, you sound like you might have a work offer for me?” She'd question, but ended up sounding more like she was urging them to agree [Ultimate Argument D].

Phoebe's quest to learn more about the magic has led her from one seemingly inhospitable corner of the world to another, except instead of the crushing depths of the continental lake this time it's a freezing corner of the content in the Kingdom. It wasn't another library that drew her to this hostile environment this time, though. She'd heard of the diseases often brought by mass amounts of mana washing along the Kingdom's shorelines. Normally, a place where disease and beasts are rampant would be the last place someone would want to go, especially coupled with the cold weather, but the pink haired mage had few questions on her mind. Where was all this mana coming from? How exactly does this mana taint soil, cause plague, and madness in both humans and beasts alike? And can there be something done about it? Faced with such a learning opportunity, Phoebe ventured to the Kingdom. Hopefully she wouldn't have to be here for very long, she wasn't trying to prematurely die a second time.

Having safely arrived at Evergate a day before, Phoebe was currently browsing the wares of a magic shop on the town's main street, her eyes scanning the shelves and displays as things seemed to get busier outside in hopes of finding something that might help her get started on investigating the mana phenomenon, though with no luck searching herself so far. She decided to ask the store's clerk if they knew anything, walking up to the counter to ask. "Hi, I'm a travelling mage and scholar. I've heard of the mass amounts of mana washes up on the Kingdom's shores, do you have anything that might help me get started investigating that phenomena?" As she finished asking the question, it seemed to get busier and busier outside on the streets. How curious. You would think a settlement that's practically in the middle of nowhere wouldn't have much goings-on, so such activity was a little unusual to Phoebe, making a mental note to herself to check out what was happening outside after her business in the shop was over.

Ryke was fun, but there was always such a thing as too much of a good thing. Orchid had spent a good amount of time in Ryke doing odd jobs, busting heads and catching criminals alike, but after a while she yearned to face different things. It was for that reason that she had decided to go where the wind would take her and arrived to the far-off lands of Rotia. Truth be told, it wasn't really her final destination, so much as just a rest stop in between her journey seeking battle and glory. As she often did she signed up as a caravan guard to fend off bandits and beasts, both which proved a little challenge but some entertainment. There was word that there's some real monsters in these lands that she was eager to face off against, however dedicated hunters were already active in the area and did their job of keeping such creatures at bay, resulting in a fairly boring journey north. Fortunately for Orchid, things were about to get interesting.

An old friend of hers had sent her a message. A certain halfling wanting to hire her for her best attributes, and she happened to be in the area already. How serendipitous. After collecting her pay from the caravan job, Orchid went about doing her usual routine in any new town: hit up the blacksmith to maintenance her equipment, find a tavern to drink and rest for the night, and try out the local cuisine. She wondered if her old buddy would even recognize her: Orchid had gone through a bit of a metamorphosis since they had last met. She's bulked up some more, and her hair changed after she drank some mysterious god juice and ended up being able to see the lines of existence. Well, if she doesn't recognize her face, surely she'd recognize her weapon. Orchid has been rocking the same poleaxe ever since she decided to take up this whole mercenary business, even after it got wrecked in the Undercity.

As Orchid was finishing a meal on a restaurant balcony, she spotted a familiar blond halfling. She was talking to some dapper looking priest folk so Orchid just watched from her seat outside. She couldn't really hear what was going on, but then again it's not as if Orchid was being hired for her wits. Besides Orchid had been thinking and she wants to give being a "mysterious protector" a try. Granted, she's more suited to be up front and in the thick of things instead of skulking in the shadows and trying to spot danger, but she still wants to give it a try. Besides she likes the theatrical flair of being a big metal orc jumping in to save a lil lady from trouble at a moment's notice. Not to mention the investigator was no doubt sharp enough to spot the heavily armored orc watching her from a restaurant balcony. And so Orchid just sits, and watches.

Professor Neco
Screenshot 2023-05-02 at 11.31.35 PM-1.png
Professor Neco seemed to light up when he saw the owl bear approach, a wide smile forming. Finally an exciting visitor who he could guess was from far away much like himself, plus they were both [beast] which was only an added bonus to him.

"Salutations my good friend, you look a lot bigger than you did in my visions. Hah well it's certainly nice to meet you Gyld. You see I'm a Professor and researcher by trade, I've been doing quite a bit of field studies out here, and for some reason during my visions I gained insight to the fact that you were coming here, and then every now and again I'd see imagery of a polar bear, so I could only come to the conclusion that it would not be long before you came here in person and it seems that I was right! I can't really explain the phenomena any better than that, but every time I've seen someone they always end up coming through this gate for some reason or another, what I do know is that it's thought these visions become more plentiful during the third life in my family, but there need not be so much about me I've rambled enough about that."

"Anyway, Gyld seeing that you're a fellow [Beast] with that strange polar bear association I thought that I just might be able to help you if we managed to get in contact because I've been studying the wild life of this area, and as you asked about my satchel, I actually have medical supplies, rations and most importantly plenty of doses of the anti-venom you might need if you were to get in close proximity of these 'polar bears' of course the reason why I saw the image of them them I am not sure, but it's best to safe then sorry is it not?"

"Now then, as I've answered your questions I must ask why have you come here, and what does it have to do with polar bears, while my abilities may be impressive I am no reader of minds and can only interpret what I see."
All and all Processor Neco seemed rather excited to be talking to Gyld.

Affonso
292906d0-33f8-4c58-8dd0-be594fbffbf4.png
Victorique's perception skills made it obvious to her that the male's body language immediately became guarded when she came over with a hello and started imposing herself on the pair as to find out what exactly they were up to. His eyes narrowed somewhat as he skeptically looked back at her with a side glance, it was more of a neutral guarded expression rather than outward hostility however, even so it was far from friendly.

Instead of saying hello back the man looked to Victorique and replied, "I'm afraid it might be a bit late for you investigator, he's going to be killed later today." the tone sounding bitter.

"I will add on completely unjust grounds at that, he didn't do anything..I'm convinced it's in malice and error...That is why I must do what I must do. I fear that there is a finite amount of time left." he said this with a look of determination in his eyes. He did not elaborate what exactly he had to do was, but it sounded like pretty serious business.

"I can already tell it's unlikely you're from around here, but I should also mention that you ought to show the respect members of house Talton deserve, not all of us are forgiving as I am."

Thankfully it didn't seem like he was particularly offended by Victorique's imposition, but he still wasn't totally giving her all the details she would have liked, her abilities getting that much out of him at least.

Eliza
Screenshot 2023-05-02 at 9.34.13 PM.png

"I know that Affonso just put the circumstances in a less than optimistic light but he's not just somebody Victorique, he's our younger brother. My name is Eliza Talton, I'm not sure what your scope of skills are Victorique, but if you could find anything at all, that could raise doubts about his guilt, maybe we could at the very least delay his execution date until we can prove it without doubt., of course I can pay you, I just know that he didn't...I can't believe he would do what they claim." She continued a few tears forming.

"Please help us." Her face looking a bit desperate, before getting closer to Victorique "I'm not sure what he's willing to do if this isn't dealt with properly." She spoke softly as if to make it hard for Affonso to hear what she was saying, but it sounded incredibly concerned and urgent nevertheless.

Kane Blackburne
crop-1.jpg

Kane continued to listen with intrigue, the smirk dying down slightly, as he hadn't been expecting Victorique to come out, the height difference was interesting to say the least, she was very forward too, Kane' eyes narrowed a bit, when he heard Affonso mention that Victorique should give Talton house members the respect they deserved, in fact he almost scoffed, but stayed quiet until after the part when Eliza got close to Victorique.

Kane eventually spoke up with a bit of a sneer now, looking toward Affonso and getting closer.

"Oh and what will your family do if she doesn't show them the respect they deserve? Throw her in the dungeon? Or maybe if they're feeling generous they'll throw her in the public stockage so that the locals can throw rocks at her! Because I just know how benevolent your family is!" He said sarcastically toward the end.

He then let out a bit of a contemptuous laugh as if he was amused by the situation.

"I'm sure your brother must have done something particularly egregious and inhumane for the court to let a nobody like myself take care of him! Maybe he's that kiddie killer I head about? Because if that's the case I'm sure that there's a special place for him after death. Don't worry I'll make sure to keep his spot in line warm, it's the least I can do for someone whose so 'prestigious' "

Kane continued to antagonize.

"Respect is yours to be earned not owed."

This prompted Affonso to glare in the direction of Kane as soon as he spoke up, until Affonso's expression was shifting to one that was very indignant, angry even, as a hand went to his short sword as if to intimidate Kane.

"Tch AS IF low life common FILTH such as yourself has a place to talk about earning respect, I'll have you know that Ulisse is twice the man that you'll ever be, it sounds like you know what I could do for this transgression, but I can't even stand the idea of stooping to your level for your worth is below the dirt which I stand on."

This only prompted Kane to look back at Affonso, the look of contempt not leaving his face.

"Oh, a Talton getting ready to go in for the kill when receiving the tiniest bread crumb of criticism, what a surprise! Please go on ahead strike me down and show us how the apple must not fall far from the tree!" He leaned in a bit closer, not seeming particularly afraid.

"Unlike you I don't hide up in my private fort while others to do my bidding, I don't have to hide my true intentions, That's why I have no intention of guarding myself from the public when I do my job I know what I'm doing is just."
Kane continued to speak, the contempt and sarcasm slowly but surly turning into more apparent bitterness.

However instead of being baited further Affonso took a deep breath, and took his hand off of his sword.

"I don't have time to waste on getting into a squabble with someone so simple minded whose barely above a criminal in the rungs of society who can't understand basic etiquette at that."

Affonso turned back from Kane and looked to Eliza and Victorique once more.

"I hope what you say is true, Victorique, please, help our brother, and when you are successful let it educate the unfortunate one, but I really must be off." Affonso spoke before heading out, leaving Victorique with Kane and Eliza.

Frigid Rose Magic Shop
96d7aa76e6793d55cbb19bcddff1eab1.jpg
Thankfully for Phoebe Penrose, there didn't seem to be too many people inside the Frigid Rose magic shop. However Phoebe's observation would prove to be accurate, the people scurrying about outside was rather unusual, with the sense of tension. Even so the store was more modest than some of the largest shops in urban centers, but it also wasn't lacking. Thankfully unlike the name the store was warm and cozy. There were some catalysts of various materials on some racks near the wall, some magic books on shelves, presumably enchanted rings, and amulets, as well as wards and charms on display, as well as more miscellaneous object sections which probably had various magic qualities . There were also some potions of various colors and bottle shapes and sizes along the wall as well, and some jars of small preserved monster parts.

A youthful woman, in dark and red robes, who was presumably the owner looked over at Penrose as she came in, standing behind the main counter in the corner of the store near the entrance.

"Hello there!, it's always nice to see a new face around here, It's usually good for business; but truthfully I can't imagine why many would want to come this far into Rotia willingly, but from the sound of thing traveler you actually have an intriguing reason at the very least a question I'm sure many of us wish we had an answer too, I'd be delighted to assist you in making that goal easier." She stated in Terran before getting to the question which Phoebe had asked her about the wares they had.

The woman was in thought for a moment, before she made a hand gesture with no visible catalyst in sight, beckoning a strange looking modestly sized blue eye amulet of sorts over to her. She then looked back to Phoebe, before trying her best to speak as concisely as possible.

"This amulet contains a Frost Basilisk eye, they are rather fearsome predators, while I am not an expert in magical animals or monsters; you'd be better off talking to Professor Necco about that topic if it strikes your fancy, I do know that this eye changes color when mana comes into it's sightline depending what kind of source it's coming from, the intensity of the glow also changes depending on if it is looking at a weak mana flow or strong Truthfully while this isn' this item's intended primary purpose, at the very least it could help you detect Mana and try to start to make sense of any patterns or, traits of interest. I should warn you though It'd be recommendable that you bring someone with you whose familiar with this land or stay close to the guard, because where you wish to go to investigate isn't necessarily the safest place, I'm sure you've already heard about the monsters, who roam, the same concerns are true near the Kingdom's shores.."

The restaurant was considerably more occupied than other areas but was not filled to capacity. Patrons were largely enjoy themselves in inside dining and outside. It was apparent that many of the patrons were also battle clad, perhaps having come back from a day of slaying monsters, There were a variety of demographics from heights, builds, and occupations. However most were younger as unfortunately was typical of the Kingdom, only the very lucky ones could say they made it to old age. Most seemed to be having a good enough time, with mead and beer flowing, as well as roasted meats, breads, winter berry jam, and root vegetables. Indeed only those with proper careers generally could afford to eat at establishments like these, there wasn't a single person there who didn't look decently off. Despite that there didn't appear to be any obvious Nobles in the place either.

The balcony area was relatively spacious in it's own right with quite a few tables, with candles set out as well as dining ware, giving a pretty nice view of the center area, allowing Orchid to see what she had her sights set on rather well.

Everyone seemed to be staying largely in their clusters and socializing among one another, however there was one figure in particular who took a look over at Orchid in a nearby table and a look of awe fell over them and they couldn't help but speak up, while the ambient sounds of patrons could be heard, as well as people moving about every once and awhile as well as glasses clinking, laughter, and discussion.

"Woah, you're like an..Orc aren't you? I come here quite a bit and..never thought I'd see one in Evergate of all places, you're like..totally ripped! I never knew someone could be so strong looking, you totally gotta share your tricks and tips cause you are looking totally fabulous, I bet you're so tough you don't even need a Mecha to fight monsters huh? I mean I'm guessing that's why you're here, most people who come around these part are related to the business some how, you get into some pretty crazy fights i can tell you that much, But that's beside the point, welcome to Evergate, totes hoping that you'll be around for a bit cause, I got a lot I'd love to talk to you about."

The woman proclaimed and spoke warmly. What she didn't have in manners perhaps she more than made up for her contrast in size and form compared to Orchid's well honed frame, it probably wouldn't take much inference for someone to guess that this woman was likely a mecha pilot just based on the way she was dressed, spoke, and was built, however her attire choice was interesting to say the least more like a hyrbid between formal dining wear and business attire, the lack of pants putting it somewhere in between.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted a mildly familiar face. A changed one, but still familiar enough. The green sort-off stood out a lot. Knowing that one was near gave her even more of a confidence boost, whether that be for better or worse. It's why she stood tall (or rather, short) when the two blue eyes white dragons haired folk talked to her.

She scoffed at the notion of being too late. “Too late? Later today means he's not dead yet, right? Sounds like I'm right on time! Besides, if the death is clean enough, even some resurrection magic would still give us a good ten more days.” She countered his argument, perhaps a little insensitive, but such was life. “Although dying must not be all that pleasant, so tell me all you know and I'll see what I can do before the day runs out.” She knew she'd gotten herself involved in something good right now.

Strengthened by the idea that someone strong was watching over her, she just scoffed at the notion of showing respect. “I'd possibly respect you more if it didn't sound like you're going to try something really stupid. Something that'd get you killed along with your brother, perhaps? I'd advise you to just work with me instead. Provide some evidence that the grounds for his execution are unjust.”

The girl seemed a lot nicer to interact with. “I'm a true and proven Lightfoot Halfling, a rank E Ryken Adventurer Guild Investigator and I'm an adept at psychology, investigation, law and sophistry, among other things.” She replied when questioned about her scope of skills.

Her snarky mood started to die down upon seeing the girl cry. People crying was making her uncomfortable and less inclined to be as direct and 'mean' as she'd normally be. “Hey, I survived a Ryke's Underbelly, clearing some noble kid's name should be a walk in the park. So... what did they accuse him off?” She said, trying to comfort the girl in her own manner.

When Eliza got closer, presumably bending down or crouching down, otherwise towering over the halfling, Victorique scoffed. “His words made that much clear the moment I picked up on them. He's not exactly subtle with it.” She replied.

As she was talking to them, someone else came over. Considering how insulting this guy was tho these two folk, Victorique figured they didn't have as much leeway as they might want. Otherwise black-haired dude wouldn't be so openly offensive. That was probably for the best, as it meant Victorique wasn't in too much trouble either.

“Hey, hold up!” She shouted at Kane. “Stop wasting time on picking fights with blue-eyes-white-haired noble here for a bit and tell me more about that child killer. Is that what he's truly accused off?” Not only did that sound interesting, that also sounded like she might finally be able to use that cursed [Child] title she'd obtained for some good purpose. With Orchid watching over, she'd be the perfect bait. She had full fate in her ability to run and dodge until one of her allies showed up. This might not even need to be a long investigation.

She then clicked her tongue, annoyed at Affonso. “If he's truly not worth the dirt you stand on, you shouldn't be spending so much time talking to him either, should you? It's a little insane to be talking to something less than dirt, is it not?”

She was surprised when Affonso actually said 'please' to a degree that was clearly visible on her face. “Wow... I got a please? Alright. I'll take it. Although with him buggering off already...” She turned to Eliza and Kane. “Why don't you two fill me in with all you know?” She stated with [Ultimate Argument E] to get them to talk again and [Ultimate Detective B] to analyse their arguments, posture, use Appraisal and get an idea on if they were being honest and/or holding things back. As for her, she was an open book. She was clearly eager to start investigating this. Not only due to her simply liking to investigate stuff, but also due to her wondering if this was the type of deal where criminal titles were messed with to make someone appear guilty. Exactly the type of thing she wished to investigate.

Things were heating up around Victorique. As she spot to the two twins, some thug with an axe came by. While Orchid knew Victorique was more than capable of getting herself out of trouble, if she was going to be working with those two siblings (She mostly assumes they're siblings because they look very similar from afar) than Orchid may need to intervene. More so when she saw the male put his hand on his sword, however nothing comes from it and he leaves shortly after. Orchid was starting to have second thoughts about being the mysterious protector when, to her surprise, a random pinkette appears out of no where to chat with her.

Orchid was a bit surprised the woman could see her physique underneath her clothing, but then again Orchid did take the time to work out. Since she doesn't have her cellphone or internet in this world, she had to find other hobbies to take up her generous amount of freetime, which mostly involves squats and pushups. She smiles at the girl and flexes her arm a bit, her sleeve tightening around her bulging bicep. "Not much to it really. Exercise frequently even when you're not fighting, rest welland have a balance diet. Not too much fatty meat, eat your greens, drink a lot of water. Of course, doesn't mean I don't cheat when I can." The orc chuckles as she motions towards the plates of dessert she had previously finished off. "Honestly, if I had known about these mechs, I probably would've saved up money to get one myself. They look amazing! Giant mechanical knights, battling monsters bigger than a storm... Sounds like just the sort of thing I would enjoy the most." Orchid opted not to follow up on the girl's comments about her toughness: if Orchid has learned anything from her many battles, it's that she's not invincible. But that was part of the fun, and challenge.

This girl looked fairly healthy all things considered, and dressed finely, so it was unlikely that she was a peasant. If she had to guess, Orchid assumed this woman was a pilot. Too soft to be a fighter, but her mannerism is pretty similar to a rent-a-warrior, so Orchid figured she operates those mechs that patrol outside. If Orchid wasn't here for business she would love to spend some time with this woman, but alas Orchid was ever the professional and needed to focus on her mission. Though that doesn't mean she didn't want to talk to the pinkette some more.

"Name's Orchid by the way. As you could guess, I'm something of a mercenary. Heard there was something going on up here so figured I may as well stop by and see what I can do to help, for a price. You wouldn't happen to know those folks down there would you?" Orchid pointed towards Victorique and and her current company. But Orchid wanted to know more about the thug with the axe and the silver-haired people. "There was another silver-white haired fellow before he left in a huff. They seem like fairly important folks. The one with the axe looks like he has some history with the two and it's not a good one. Short one just walked right up to the other two before the axe man joined."

Gyld raised an eyebrow, intrigued by this peculiar character. The fact that Professor Neco had seen him in visions was unexpected, to say the least. More so because he thought he'd have to wait until he was much more powerful before people would start getting visions! This was amazing! He loved that he had appeared in someone else's visions, further confirming his firm belief in his own importance. He took a moment to gather his thoughts before responding to the professor's inquiries.

"Ah, Professor Neco, it seems that more than fate has brought us together," Gyld said, his chest puffing out slightly as he spoke. "Spiritual Beasts resonate with different mortals, they come in time to worship and look to the spiritual beast for guidance and protection."

He paused, considering his next words carefully. This could very well be his first tribal leader! Perhaps even a shaman to begin worshiping him as a spiritual beast!

"If you would be so kind as to share your expertise and accompany me on this journey, I am certain that together, we can unravel the mysteries surrounding this elusive creature. And in return, I offer my protection and the unique connection I have with the forests to aid us in our quest."

Gyld looked thoughtful for a moment, pondering the professor's offer of help. "Your knowledge and supplies would indeed be invaluable in my quest. As for my reason for coming to this land, I've heard of the dangers it holds and thought that perhaps in such a place, I could find the challenge I seek in the White Bear of the North."

"Now then, as I've answered your questions I must ask why have you come here, and what does it have to do with polar bears, while my abilities may be impressive I am no reader of minds and can only interpret what I see." All and all Processor Neco seemed rather excited to be talking to Gyld.

"What you didn't see is that I have traveled to this land seeking a mysterious creature, known as the White Bear of the North. I, too, have had visions of this polar bear, and I believe that by engaging in a sacred hunt blessed by the moon and the winds of the north, that I will attain its secrets, I will come to better understand my bear nature and unlock hidden powers within me."

Gyld awaited Professor Neco's response, hoping that the excitement of the adventure would be enough to convince the professor to join him. In the back of his mind, Gyld couldn't help but wonder if there was more to these visions than either of them realized.

The person that attended to her inquiry behind the counter was a young looking woman. Her appearance led Phoebe to guess that they were roughly around the same age. If she didn't use some sort of anti-aging spell, potion, or whatever, to own and run a shop like this at her age is really impressive. A short pause after the shopkeep introduced herself, the woman produced a blue amulet. Quite a mesmerizing trinket on its own, but Phoebe was much more interested in the capabilities of the amulet as described by the young woman. ["That amulet would definitely be helpful, thank you! How much for it?"] Phoebe readied her coin purse. ["Thanks for the warning too. You mentioned a Professor Necco? Do you happen to know where I could find them? Perhaps I could ask them to accompany me, or at the very least learn more about the creatures around here."]

All the while Phoebe was talking with the woman, the matter of the activity outside lingered in her mind, eventually getting to the point where Phoebe needed some answers. ["By the way, what's happening outside? I just got here yesterday so I'm not terribly familiar with the goings-on of this town."]

Affonso

It didn't seem like Affonso was too interested in engaging Victorique further with her counter words, mostly scoffing and grumbling to himself here and there. He didn't seem particularly pleased overall that she was prying for information, that much was clear particularly after she mentioned the fact that what he was intending on doing seemed stupid. Affonso muttered a bit after that line in particular something under his breath which wasn't terribly coherent in Terran. Also annoyed when she clicked her tongue his way and seemed to in a way side with the 'black haired dude'. Regardless his mood looked like it brightened a bit when Victorique essentially confirmed that she would assist, but this did not stop Affonso from going out to take care of his 'business' which more than likely translated to him getting ready to do whatever 'stupid' thing he was preparing to do, not wanting to take any chances it seemed, as he didn't stay around for questioning on his way out of the square.

Eliza
Screenshot 2023-05-02 at 9.34.13 PM-1.png

Eliza seemed to calm down ever so gradually as Victorique took a bit of a kinder approach when the tears came into play, as well as when Victorique reaffirmed with her that she had managed in the Underbelly. When Victorique confirmed that it had been transparent Eliza looked a bit more distressed at that revelation.

"It's..really awful, I'm afraid what you say will become true if we don't do something, but..were you genuine you mentioned that resurrection magic? I can't say I Know many who are capable of bringing someone back the way they were.." She said almost a bit timid sounding. Before following up with.

"N-not that I don't have faith you can help us before anything like that is needed! I just..it would make me feel better knowing that even if...the worst happens we still would have options." She clarified.

Kane Blackburne
crop-1.jpg
Kane wasn't even really expecting Victorique to feel like speaking to him, so when he got a shout his way, he was actually surprised. Unfortunately it was telling him to stop arguing with the noble, which Kane didn't really feel like stopping,, so he didn't really bother responding to that. It was nice to see that the guy finally left. Kane then looked to Eliza once again, and back to Victorique as if he was contemplating what his next move was, his face still far from friendly as he was in thought.

Upon hearing Victorique make her buggering off content Kane said looking to no one in particular, "Good riddance."

As Victorique started her line of questioning for the pair to divulge information to her with her abilities in play once again, Kane's standing stance still wasn't exactly the most friendly looking, the look on his face having shifted from mischievous to one which was almost sour, while he was in thought. He stood straight, before looking from Victorique to Eliza once more. Kane did eventually turn to Eliza, who looked back at him a bit nervously, looking away quickly.

Kane then let out a bit of a sigh before shortly saying, "Look lady, I have nothing personally against you, it's your older brother whose a cox-comb walking around with that holier than thou attitude." Kane said matter of fact.

"He's not the only one either, but just because there are some bad apples doesn't mean the whole tree is rotten." Kane clarified, sounding more calm and reasonable as he said this, still not really giving off 'friendly vibes' even so.

Eliza looked a bit surprised by this revelation but she still made minimal eye contact with him, instead redirecting her attention to Victorique without a word.

Kane then looked back to Victorique as and finally decided to speak, taking on the more neutral tone toward Victorique as well, seemingly not particularly bothered by her either at the moment. Perhaps it was because she spoke to him like someone normal rather than looking down on him, which was a bit strange for him to see.

"As I don't really have much better to do if you really wanna know, personally I have no reason to believe that he didn't commit the crime, he was found guilty of murdering a child near the walls, the wall guards, they found his sword on his person slathered with blood, and him nearby the body not long after. I understand that the Talton's here were visiting here on official business, this all transpired two weeks ago or so." Kane replied. At the very least as an executioner he was privied to some information on who he was going to be executing.

"What he says is true, we were here on official business...and then Adriano went out for a stroll, you see he has a hard time falling asleep at night, so he went out for a walk in the perimeters, and before we knew it.." She said toward the end sounding teary again, "He was being arrested..but you both don't understand..there's no way Adriano could do something like that..I Just can't believe he would..he's a good person, it doesn't make any sense..something else had to have happened." Thanks to Victorique's abilities she could see that it didn't seem like Eliza was being dishonest to her from what she could tell, the emotion seemed genuine, like she truly believed what she was saying.

Kane scoffed a bit at that, "Lady, I don't know about a good person but I can tell you both that the guy has been absolutely distraught since being arrested, talking about how he didn't do anything wrong."

"He also isn't the only one due today either so today's event will be on either way."

The pink haired one seemed to light up as Orchid explained her and flexed, "That's....so cool!" She exclaimed looking a bit giddy even at seeing the orc show her physique.
She also giggled some when Orchid mention cheat meals being something she partook in when she could. "Thanks that's really great to note!"

"I definitely get that haha, but y'know moving around in a mecha isn't easy work either! There are just so many monsters that you have to deal with around here, cause they just don't stop coming. Really the only good thing out of it is the parts you can harvest and some of the gear, both of which have pretty useful applications in the everyday world."
She said.

"Course if we could just wish them all away I would in a heart beat, monsters do so many horrible things..and unfortunately it can be a real challenge for people to find work around here outside of it being combat related..."

"But I'm totally glad you think that they're cool, I do too! They're so customizable, and they let every some of the weakest of people feel like what it is to be strong.." she said practically gushing over the topic.

"If you ever find yourself wanting one down the line I could totally help hook you up, plenty of people in our type of work use them."
She said with a smile.

"I can only guess that was I right about you not being from around here then." She replied after Orchid shared her occupation, as while mercenary wasn't exactly an uncommon occupation between that, adventuring and the military "Orchid's a nice name, my name's Dafne it's totally nice to meet cha~" She said cheerily, before addressing the next part of Orchid's line of dialogue asking her about what was going on.

"Oh that!" She then stood up to look over to see the white haired people Orchid had been talking about.

"She's a Talton!" Dafne said , pointing to Eliza. "They're a noble house in Rotia."

"So is the guy who left."

She then pointed to Kane, and seemed to shudder a bit a look of a disgust almost forming on her face, as if she had to force herself to conjure the words, "And that..guy..is an executioner...totally gross."

"Which I guess leads me to what's happening today, unfortunately a member of House Talton was found guilty of murder and he's scheduled to be executed later today, there's also been some tension about the possible risk of elevated monster activity today based on scout reports, so people have been a bit..more on edge than usual with those two..things hand in hand, there have also been some..unsavory rumors going around to top it all off, it's really a cocktail for tension in a place like this."
Dafne said.

"But you shouldn't have to worry about all of that too much.." She then looked at the shorter person that Orchid had mentioned. "Yeah i don't..really exactly know who the shorter one is, she looks like a new face."

"I suppose it must be more than fate as you say, otherwise I do not believe that my visions would be so compelling as to lead me out here to you. and so that's what you are then? Most fascinating, you see visions are within my family, my mother had them, as did her father, and now I have them, and they've always led us in the right direction, so by this reasoning I can conclude that, we were simply meant meet one another."

He then said with a smile and a small bow, "I believe that given this mutual information it would be most beneficial for both of our goals, if I accompany you then, as these bears are of great interest to me as well and have been for quite some time, there's alway risk involved when dealing with these more..dangerous beings, so knowing that you'll be there is certainly reassuring. Perhaps between the two of us we can complete your quest, and see if there is anything further for you to unlock, meanwhile I can learn more about these illustrious creatures, and we can both discover what these visions truly mean."

"Irrespectively I do strongly believe that it is in your best interest to follow your instincts here, I think that if you are having the gift of visions there is something important just on the cusp of our discovery. Now then, if you wouldn't mind following me I think that we can better prepare back at my lab, there's more I can share with you there, and I'm sure that you've traveled long and far, so I certainly understand if you'd like to have a period of rest before we head out on such a grand excursion."
Professor Neco said cheerily enough.

As he gestured for Gyld to follow him., starting to head toward the sign which was going to lead them toward the more main street type area.

"Out of curiosity where you do hail from?" He said to make some small talk along the way toward the building with the tall observation deck tower.

The shop owner looked like she was in thought for a moment, before pausing,
"As I am a supporter of everything academic, and I am assured that you are going to put it good use more than just it's looks, I can in good will give it to you discounted for 70 Rykes."
She said with a bit of a smile. Given the monster part in question wasn't exactly the easiest thing to get it was a fairly generous offer for Phoebe, even if that still equated to about three and a half day living expenses for the average person. Indeed this young woman was more than likely talented, as Phoebe's observation was certainly well taken at her age.

She then placed the amulet down on the counter gently, waiting for the exchange before replying, "Oh yes, Professor Neco's laboratory is difficult to miss,it's positioned near this very street that you're on now, there's an observatory tower with a ceiling with an opening jutting up and out from the building, you probably already saw it on your way looking around." She replied. Indeed the observation tower was somewhat of a landmark to say the least, even if it wouldn't necessarily be obvious to an outsider for whom it belonged too.

"As I said he is certainly knowledgable about the topics you are curious about and should be able to tell you how to use that amulet to it's fullest potential..and he has been known to accompany travelers, he may even know that you're already here, it's been said that he has rather accurate visions..a most curious fellow, but also quite kind, I think you'll find him most adequate for what you are looking for."

Then hearing Phoebe ask her about what was going on outside the Shop owner looked up briefly in thought before replying without getting too deep into the details, shifting her weight a bit.

"You see, the town right now..is on a bit of a higher alert than usual, scouts came back and spoke of there being potentially higher than usual monster activity around this area, in addition there's an execution scheduled today with several individuals, not all of which are popular picks which people agree with, it's part of the reason you may have. seen the royal guard deployed here, there are also nobles visiting, all and all the situation is a bit more tense than usual, I myself have been trying to keep a low profile and just keep the shop running, I'm not really one to get involved in politics anyway.."

"Is that so? Did any magistrates or whatever they call judges around here do their magical appraisal thing to find out if he's a murderer? Also who did he kill? Can't imagine that someone from a noble house would be executed so soon unless he did something seriously bad, like murder the governor or something." Orchid was really more interested in this investigation since that's what it seems like Victorique was going to do, so she still had a few more questions. But this monster hunting business was also interesting and who knows, maybe it's related. Most folks dismiss monsters as being mindless beasts with more power than sense, but maybe this whole thing was a ploy by some monster mastermind trying to undermine the defenses of this place. Definitely a reach, but if Orchid could see this happening if they were fighting say, an enemy nation or something.

Once the pinkette, Dafne, answered her questions about the murder Orchid figured she may as well follow up on this monster business if that's an angle she's going to investigate. Plus these robots are just really cool, and Orchid wouldn't mind spending some time here to figure them out. "So, you seem like you've seen your fair share of fights here. What's it like fighting in a giant robot? And what sort of monsters do you usually fight? Honestly speaking, most of the monsters I've fought were little more than corrupted beasts. Oh sure, a giant bear with spikes growing out of his arms and face is terrifying, but he's still a bear in the end. I've never even seen a monsters bigger than that, and I'm sure most of the abominations in these lands are at least as big as some of those mechs I saw at the gate."

Orchid then motioned her hand towards her poleaxe, which was strapped to her chair behind her. "And how do you pilot these mechs? I can't imagine it's easy to translate one's physical skills to a machine. Hell I tried to take up horse riding to become a proper knight, but fighting on horseback is vastly different from what I normally do on foot. I would love to learn how to use these mechs, but I'm sure it's not an easy skill everyone for someone like myself." As she spoke, Orchid noted some waiters coming by to clean up dishes. She flagged one down and looked to Dafne. "Want anything? I'm just going to order some drinks."

Well, she knew one thing for sure. She wouldn't cry about Affonso's death if he got himself killed doing something stupid. He'd been warned, she'd told him she'd fix this, he still went on. That was on him right now.

It's the girl's tears that got her to chill down a bit. “Well, yes. It's not easy and should be avoided if possible, but there have been some cases where folk were resurrected. There's a famous example from Ryken where someone from the Adventurer's Guild was deemed a murderer, but resurrected his victims to undo his crime... but that's getting off track. For now, let's just figure out how to avoid needing to go through such lengths to begin with.”

She scoffed. “We won't be needing such options. Even the gods themselves find me an [Annoying Pursuer] when I bite down into a mystery and I've decided I'll be latching onto this one with equal ferocity. Perhaps I can finally figure out how criminal titles are used and manipulated while at it.”

It seemed like the red eyed, black haired dude also toned it down a bit in front of the girl. She wasn't sure what got him to play nice, but that'd probably make things easier, so she for sure wouldn't complain about it. She clicked her tongue at the story. “Well, that's just about every shred as suspicious as it sounds. I mean, come on, randomly murdering a child and not even bothering to hide the evidence? That sounds like your classical set-up.”

She took out her pipe, stuffed in some tobacco and lit it. Inhaling the smoke helped her thing. “Well, first things first, I'm assuming they must claim him to have had some sort of motive right? I know this place is known to be a bit backwards, but surely they at least tried to make sense of it at some point, right?” She looked at Kane in particular.

Then at Eliza. “On the other hand, are there any people that'd love to see him framed? Any enemies, rivals, inheritance. You know, the usual suspects...” As she went through that list, she remembered another option. “Ah, since this place is known to have a fair few monsters in it, those would be a good guess. He might as well have been mind-controlled into doing it by a monster having some fun, so... Hmmm... to track such an option down, do you know if there have been more cases like this? Murders with a barely explained motive?”

That'd cover some basics, but that wasn't enough. “Anyhow, take me to the crime scene. I want to see if there's anything left the others have missed.” She commanded Kane and Eliza as if it was the most natural thing to do in the world, although not even in an overtly bossy manner. It was the type of 'you're also curious, right, so just do this' manner. One that casually assumed they were fine with her taking the lead on this investigation.

Actually, she remembered something. “Ah, you're a tough guy, right? I'm Victorique Sopheana. What's your name? I gotta know who to call if I end up running into a monster or mastermind. It'd be able to outrun just about anyone and anything, but that means the culprit would still be on the loose, so I'd rather call for help. Sadly, one of the guards I tried hiring didn't show up and the other seems pre-occupied.” She glossed over at Orchid's location. “So I'll be counting on you, so lead the way.” Just like that, she'd decided he'd go from executioner to body-guard for the duration.

Given the amulet's capabilities, it was to be expected that it would be a little pricy, but 70 Rykes was a bit steep. Still, the amulet’s abilities would prove useful in her investigation. As Phoebe counted out the 70 Rykes from her coin purse, she started thinking of her current travel budget, which was recently reduced thanks to the incident on the Fatte Tunalia. At this rate, she'd need to find someway to make more money. On one hand, she could just return home for a little to work a job to save up some money and then go back out. Could take up some short term instructor role at Ryken Academy, that'd be a productive way to spend time. On the other hand, she somehow make money on her travels. Maybe take some quests from the Adventurer's Guild? Eh, the decision could be made later after she'd sorted out all this mana washing up on the shores business and how homesick she's feeling after all that. For now, the pink haired mage placed the 70 Rykes on the counter and picking up the amulet. ["Thank you very much."] Phoebe bowed her head a little as she said that.

After completing the exchange, Phoebe listened along as the shopkeep went on about Professor Neco. ["Oooh, so that's what that place is! Yea, I saw it heading to the inn yesterday after I got here. I'll be sure to check it out."] This Professor Neco character's expertise in the lay of the land and of magical creatures would definitely be helpful to have, though Phoebe did find the mention of his visions to be a little curious.

The conversation then moved to the goings on outside. ["Hmm, I see..."] Given the Kingdom's autocratic government, happenings of public execution wouldn't be that much of a surprise. Still though, it's not something that Phoebe would probably want to see herself. But the thing that interested her the most was the presence of a few nobles in a such a remote location. Had someone pissed off the wrong person? That'd certainly help explain things. Perhaps Phoebe should follow the shopkeep's lead and try to stay out of the Kingdom's politics while she was here. ["Well, thank you for the info and the amulet, I shouldn't keep you any longer. I'll be heading over to the Professor's lab. Good luck with business."] She bowed her head again before turning to exit the shop.

As she stepped out onto the streets, there definitely much more people out there than when she first entered the shop a little while ago. Taking a look around the cityscape, Phoebe spotted the observatory in question before starting to make her way over there.

Dafne

"Uhhh, about the first part I..dunno exactly what method they used, but if he was found by the guards they might have used one of the orbs to appraise him."

"About who he killed I heard It was a child, I'm not sure where the child is from or whose family they hail from, but killing a kid...is pretty serious as you can imagine, it wasn't like a duel or something gone bad, really just some innocent kid as far as people have been talking so regardless of who you are when you get into killing defenseless people, it..tend to be a very serious charge"
Dafne said sounding almost a bit sad toward the end of her line of dialogue.

Dafne did perk up when Orchid asked her about what it was like fighting the mech, turning to look to her once more. "Oh! It's really exciting actually, I love taking down large monsters, it's always really exciting! I guess the best way I could describe is..it's sort of like being in a giant set of armor, with internals you need to manage sometimes. You see it's powered by magic, but it does take genuine skill to pilot it effectively. By manage internals it's..kind of like if you occasionally had to think to breathe or think to make your heart work, with stuff you might need to pull, push, or squeeze at specific times.. there's also depth perception and coordination skills involved of course. It also really depends on the build and model, a lot of the military's builds have standardization with certain unit types, but if you're out and about with your own working as an adventurer you're more likely to see more..less professional or unique builds. That isn't to say that sometimes you don't see people with these sorts of builds in the military it just means that they probably had a career and were allowed to use their mech of choice for action."

Dafne smiled as she spoke about this, it seemed like she was pretty passionate about the subject!

"Monsters are all shapes and sizes around these parts, you are right to assume they can get pretty big based on the sizes of the mechs, sometimes we definitely end up fighting monsters which are comparable in size or larger, thankfully the extremely large ones tend to be pretty rare from what I've seen. of course it depends the sort of areas you go into, there are some that are much riskier than others, particularly when you start going into places like the dark continent where those sorts or extremely dangerous monsters get much more plentiful..but sounds like you've had your fair share of fighting some interesting stuff, there are definitely monsters that are bear size around here too."

"Back to the piloting thing maybe I could show you the inside of mine sometime!"

She perked up a bit more when she inquired about drinks. "Ooo yeah I could totally go for an orange nectar right now."

A waiter was swift to come over and was ready to take a drinks order when all was said and done.

As Victorique said even with the caveats that it probably wasn't the best idea to have to resort that it, it seemed to have put a bit more of a relieved look on Eliza's face, as she appeared considerably more calm."That means there's a chance even if everything goes wrong, and I can work with that..Affonso too..thank you for telling me this Victorique." She said sounding ever so slightly better in her tone, even if it was pretty clear there was quite a bit of anxiety and stress beyond her face deep down. The added bit of Victorique speaking about not needing it too certainly didn't hurt making Eliza feel better too. Despite this every now and again Eliza looked in Kane's general direction as if she wasn't the most comfortable being in his proximity, it was looking more like she tolerated his presence.

"Well of course!" Eliza agreed with Victorique. "Why would anyone strike someone down child or not in a place where they'd be caught so quickly? Beyond the fact there's no way he would ever harm anyone like that I promise you as someone whose grown up along side him..he isn't capable of such a horrible thing without there being foul play involved.." continuing to defend her brother with her words.
She didn't seem to particularly react to Victorique going for a smoke.

Kane Blackburne
crop-1-1.jpg
Kane had been listening to the two interact, looking back and forth between them, his face was a bit harder to read this time around, but overall he still wasn't giving the most friendly vibes off.
Kane let out a bit of a dark chuckle when he heard Victorique turn to him and ask that. "If by 'backward' you mean one of the swiftest sentencing turn arounds in the realm and people getting what they deserve quick, then sure 'backward.' is the way to describe it." While this wasn't exactly a completely factually incorrect statement it still missed quite a bit of the nuance of how the autocracy created situations where people were overly harshly sentenced or things were not as thoroughly looked into as they should have been. Nor did it explore whether or not the death penalty was ever appropriate, it was assumed it was.

"Course they tried to make sense of it, they don't just pull a sentence out of a hat. For a motive they said he likely killed the kid out of anger for disrespecting him or something like that, whatever it was he appeared to be pretty angry when they had apprehended him.."

Eliza then looked back to Victorique once more as she questioned. She appeared to go into thought once again as she rolled Victorique's question around in her mind.

"Well..there are some who I can't say he doesn't get the best along with, but I can't imagine any of them would truly want him framed or go to such extreme lengths..to make it so.all the way out here no less..although there is a member of House Cecil who I heard gossip about making a special arrangement to come and view his execution..as for where they are at the moment I am..unaware, nor would I want to proclaim that they had anything to do with this, but he and them weren't..on the best terms."

Kane rolled his eyes abit at the mention of House Cecil.

She looked a bit more concerned when Victorique brought up the possibilities of monsters. "It would have to be a..pretty powerful monster I..imagine to have an influence like that in here." She spoke sounding a bit hushed on this particular topic. "Deaths aren't exactly uncommon, there certainly have been plenty of strange cases all over Rotia as well as here I'd assume, but Evergate isn't my home, I would need to look more into it.." Eliza confirmed.

Kane looked a bit surprised once again when Victorique spoke to him matter of fact to show her the crime scene, but it wasn't nearly as much as when she asked if he was supposed to be a tough guy, and then gave him her name to top it all off. Before a grin of sorts started to form on his face.

"You know Victorique, you are aware what I do for a living right? And that really doesn't bother you? I'm sure it didn't take someone like yourself long to figure out that this Talton over here isn't exactly the most fond of me either, that's not an uncommon position to hold in Rotia believe me I know from experience .so unless you're trying to get a future career as an executioner just letting you know that hanging around me long isn't gonna win you many favors with a lot of people around here..but if you insist even after knowing that, it doesn't really actually matter to me either way if you can prove this guy innocent or not, at the end of the day I'll still get paid, so sure I'll help you out, it's not like I have a lot better to do, and it's sure as hell more interesting then just standing around here till it's show time."

Eliza didn't really look the most pleased that Kane had been so forward with his comments, but she didn't try to deny them either, before she said, "If he must come, I insist that I walk beside you." Eliza said looking to Victorique.

Presuming everyone was ready to get a move on Kane started to lead the pair through the streets away from the square, heading closer toward the border walls since it was where the murder had taken place. After some walking they'd eventually reach an open snowy area near the wall where there was a gap from where the houses were. In the ground there appeared to be some very small deep holes which someone observant might notice, of course the blood, bodies and weapons had long been cleared away so they were mostly dealing with what had been left.

The shop keeper seemed pleased that Phoebe had been able to pay the reduced rate, very much unaware of her money situation. Part of the reason the gem was so expensive to begin with at regular price was because of how dangerous Frost Basilisk were to successfully kill and take the eye from.

"Of course, Your patronage is appreciated, and believe me I know what it can be like out there, on journeys like these so if you find yourself needing any assistance with your stay here, please feel free to return and I could possibly help you with accommodations for the days that you're here, as I said I strongly believe in supporting academic endeavors.."

She nodded once more, "It really is of my belief it's best to not get involved in complicated matters such as the ones I mentioned if you need not too, and thank you I appreciate your well wishes, business around these parts is up and down I must admit Evergate isn't exactly a prime destination in Rotia but it does help lower the land taxes considerably , even so your recent purchase certainly helps me keep the place running, Farewell then, and I truly do wish you luck during your time here..and please stay safe." She finished sounding a bit more serious toward the end.
Professor Neco's Lab

The tension was still there in the streets as people walked about, the low hum of talking could be heard there was a buzz in the town. Nothing too eventual transpired for Phoebe as she made her way over, however there was another Mech which had made its way down the street she was on taking up quite a bit of room, but she was still able to get around it easily enough.

While this was transpiring Professor Neco himself had made his way with his new Owlbear traveling companion making more small talk with him where before he eventually reached the laboratory entrance.

"Well then we're here!~" Professor Neco said cheerily enough, his tail shifting about some as he opened the wooden door up into the well organized space. They just happened to be arriving near the same time as Phoebe had gotten near the entrance herself, Professor Neco out of habit turned toward her after noticing her there before he turned to her.

"Oh, hello there! Are you here to use the lab or for information by any chance?" He asked her, those two reasons by far made up the vast majority of reasons people came to his laboratory after all so it wasn't a far fetched guess. Even so he presented himself quite friendly to her following up with a "If you are, you've come just at the perfect time. You see I've just met a most interesting person who I've been seeing in my visions" He then gestured to Gyld.

"So I was just about to show him around the place, I can certainly do the same for you if you are interested."

She scoffed again. This girl was really assuming she needed the resurrection magic. As if Victorique wasn't going to get this sorted with ease. She'd show her! Sadly enough, Eliza only confirmed the obvious without giving any additional insight. At least not immediately.

Kane's reply of 'backward' had her grimace. “Exactly, quantity over quality. Not being too worried about getting it wrong at times, being tricked by corruption, monsters or clever criminals on the regular. That type of backwards. Glad to hear we're on the same page.” She replied to him with a challenging tone to it.

His next words had her pause for a bit. “Out of anger... I see.” She didn't even need to ask if that lined up with what they thought Adriano would do, as she was pretty sure Eliza would deny it. Still... “Do you guys really think your nobility is that cruel, moronic and corrupt?” That part was the bigger mystery.

Eliza had a bit more useful information next. Some sort of member of House Cecil wanting to see him executed? Well, that was one thing to keep in mind. She spotted Kane's eye roll. “You're not a fan of this House, I presume?” She asked him, wondering if he knew more.

From what Eliza said next, monsters couldn't be ruled out, but would be a rarity. Still, if this was a one-off, it'd be less likely. She turned to Kane. “So, do you know more? If there's been more executions with dubious motive? I want to know if the possibility of it being a powerful monsters is worth investigating first or only if I rule out other options. If this is a one-off occasion, I'll leave it for later. If there's similar cases, I'll make that my first hypothesis.”

She looked Kane in the eyes when he mentioned all that about him, slowly putting her pipe out... then bursting out in laughter. It was almost as if someone or something else was laughing along with her in the background. [Bulvark's Touch]. “Hahaha! You don't have the slightest clue, do you?” He thought he was anywhere near as bad as the folk she'd work with before? That was cute. “I've dealt with all sorts of scum from the Ryken Underbelly, I occasional employ a guard who casually explained to me how she'd cook up halfling meat once and I've been trying to figure out how titles are given to the extend even whatever god or higher power gives them seems to be fed up with my attempts. I should be warning you! Are you sure you want to help out someone that can tarnish your reputation?”

She then turned to Eliza again. “Yes, he must. Don't worry though. At the end of the day, our reputations don't matter as much as our ability to get to the truth and to expose it to all. I'll figure this out.” She was confident. That said, she was a little confused. “You're free to walk where you want.” She wasn't sure why this girl wanted to walk besides her. Did she want to walk further away from Kane or did her child-like appearance make someone feel protective of her again? She figured she'd check with some [Insight D] to see if she could make sense of Eliza's motivation there.

As she approached the area, she got to work. She'd first use [Ultimate Past Detective]. She honestly didn't expect much, but you never knew. Perhaps someone skittered off just before they arrived here or something? Probably not, but she was rather sure than sorry. Next she used [Ultimate Detective] to go through the scene carefully. The holes, any traces of where blood might've been cleaned up from, distances towards walls, buildings... whatever might be relevant, she'd commit it to her [Eidetic Memory]. Finally, she'd quickly check if [Ultimate Future Detective] gave anything. Once again, she didn't expect anything, but was rather sure than sorry. Folk might say and think what they like, but one thing was sure, she was thorough and serious when it came to her work here.

Orchid listened to Dafne, still keeping an eye on Victorique, but she was interested in how these mechs operate. They seem a more... Organic in nature, though Orchid supposed that in this world, a more sci-fi explanation isn't going to be common. Hell if operating the mechs was more of a thing of will than knowledge, maybe Orchid could operate one despite having never even seen so much as the inside. "I'd love to see you in action one of these days. Stuff like this is better shown than said. And who knows, maybe I'll get to do more than be inside of your mecha." Orchid says in a vaguely flirty manner. However duty calls. When a server came by to get Dafne's drink, Orchid saw Victorique and her entourage move out. "Hey Dafne, I'll be staying at an inn not to far from here. Don't recall the name exactly, but it had a dragon drinking from a mug on the sign. Room 3. I need to head out but I'll catch up with you again later." Paying for her tab and the drink, Orchid also gave Dafne her business card. She had these made in Ryke, containing most of the ways Orchid could be contacted when she's not in town, as well as her qualifications. "Catch you around, pilot. Don't get into trouble without me."

Gathering her things, Orchid looked in the direction Victorique went and proceeded to jump from the balcony onto a nearby rooftop [Jumping B]. Following Victorique wouldn't be hard, but trying to be subtle was. Again, Orchid was about the opposite of sneaky when it comes to being stealthy, so she was largely relying on the bizarre nature of an orc parkour across the roof to be so strange that most people wouldn't even know to be on the look out. It helps that Orchid more or less knew where they were going: Chances are Victorique is going to investigate the scene of that crime committed by the noble, which if Orchid remembers vaguely enough, happened towards the wall. So Orchid would just continue to shadow Victorique from above, doing her best to remain unnoticed as far as folks down below are concerned.

Not to mention if Orchid's hunch was right and there is something more at play than a noble getting careless, maybe there was someone or something nearby watching the scene as well. As they say, criminals tend to return to the scene of the crime. Whether it be in the form of a monster with powerful magics, or just someone with a chip on their shoulder, Orchid would do her best to be a second pair of eyes to not only watch Victorique's back, but also look out for any more clues that could help her with the investigation.

While this was transpiring Professor Neco himself had made his way with his new Owlbear traveling companion making more small talk with him where before he eventually reached the laboratory entrance.

The journey through the streets of Rotia was an experience in and of itself for Gyld. He observed the hustle and bustle of the people around him, their resilience in the face of danger and hardship evident in their determined expressions and brisk movements. It was a contrast to the tranquility of the forest he had known, but not an unwelcome one.

The buildings, with their robust architecture, stood sturdy against the chill of the northern air that swept through the streets. Snow dusted the rooftops and cobblestones, adding a touch of white beauty to the otherwise grim surroundings. Citizens bundled up in thick furs hurried past, a testament to their resilience in this harsh climate.

Gyld noticed the awe in the eyes of the townsfolk as they took in his unique form. The owl bear, standing tall and proud, a symbol of nature's strength and mystery amidst the town's man-made structures. It was a sight that added a certain sense of excitement to the already buzzing atmosphere.

As they made their way through the town, the sight of a large mech lumbering down the street caught his attention. He marveled at the ingenious mix of magic and machinery, a clear demonstration of the kingdom's commitment to defense in these troubled times.

Professor Neco's continuous chatter provided a soothing background noise to Gyld's observations. For once, Gyld was pleased not to be alone, and he found the professor's presence comforting. The realization that someone else had seen visions of him was both intriguing and flattering to the owl bear. After all, it wasn't every day that one found themselves the subject of a vision.

"Professor, it is refreshing to find someone who shares a similar understanding of the extraordinary. Your visions and research are fascinating," Gyld commented, appreciating the intellectual companionship. "I must say, this town, despite its dangers, is alive with a spirit of resilience and discovery. It’s an intriguing change from the solitude of the forest."

Their conversation continued, their shared enthusiasm for their respective pursuits helping to create a connection between the two unique beings. As they finally reached the laboratory, Gyld could not help but feel a tinge of anticipation for the discoveries that awaited him within its walls.

Upon reaching the laboratory, Gyld looked around with interest. The building was a maze of scientific equipment, filled with books, specimens and all manner of intriguing objects. When the professor opened the door, Gyld eyed the door, grunting. Perhaps as an owl he'd flitter through the door. He didn't want to look undignified, squeezing his robust frame through a human sized doorway. Instead of making a choice, Gyld stalled.

"Indeed, a most fascinating place, Professor," Gyld remarked, his gaze taking in every detail.

His interest was suddenly piqued when he noticed a woman near the entrance. The professor greeted her with the same friendly demeanor he had shown Gyld, introducing him to her.

"Ah, I think you humans would say it is a pleasure to meet you?" Gyld said, inclining his head towards the woman in greeting. "Those who are to worship me or perhaps befriend me may utter my name as Gyld Aza Lyrakien. And you are?"

"So I was just about to show him around the place, I can certainly do the same for you if you are interested."

Gyld was eager to explore the laboratory and learn more about the professor's research, especially if it could aid him in his quest to understand the White Bear of the North. However, he was also curious about the woman, wondering what brought her to this place of scientific discovery in the midst of a kingdom known for conflict and monsters.

Walking through the streets to the observatory, Phoebe was a little surprised to see that this many people lived out here in such a hostile environment. Not to mention the royal mechs that looked like they were straight out of the sci-fi books she used to read in her childhood in her previous life. You'd think that this place would be some sort of royal retreat or something if you disregard the dangerous location or the presence of so many commoners. As Phoebe approached the lab, she couldn't help but get a sense of deja vu. She'd seen that same architecture in the Duchy when she went to gain access to their magic library. Perhaps the architectural design really was just that popular.

As Phoebe got closer to the observatory, she spotted a pair near the entrance, with one being another cat person and the other appearing to be a bear with the features of an owl, whom she was a little intimidated by. Her qualms were soon dissipated when both introduced themselves, both seeming friendly. "I'm Phoebe Penrose. I'm a travelling mage from Ryke. Nice to meet you both." She bowed her head a bit after introducing herself before looking at the cat person. "Are you by chance Professor Neco? I'm looking to study the mass amounts of mana washing up on the shores. I was told that you could help me with that study and also..." Phoebe reached into her travel bag and produced the amulet containing the Frost Basilisk eye. "With this. I was told that this could help with picking up mana flow, but I'm not too terribly familiar with the topic of magical beasts so I was told to seek you out." As she awaited the Professor's response, she took a look up at his laboratory before directing her attention back towards the Professor. If that sense of deja vu wasn't strong before, it sure as hell was now. The exterior looked just like that gnome's magical workshop back in the Duchy. How particular. Perhaps this was the work of some travelling architect or something rather than just an affinity for the same architectural design?

"You know Victorique if you say that kind of stuff loud enough around the right person in Rotia, we might end up seeing one another soon enough in a way you won't like and that'd be a real shame." Kane replied darkly once more, a smirk on his face. It wasn't as much as a threat toward her as it was Kane's own way of warning her that saying that kind of stuff around people could get her in trouble, even if he didn't fully agree with her assessment. Very much insinuating freedom of speech wasn't exactly a given right in Rotia, insult the wrong person and bad things could happen.

Kane then chuckled a bit at her next question as if she just asked the most basic thing, "Of course plenty of them are, if one of them even think you just looked at them the wrong way watch what can happen, it isn't pretty." Kane proclaimed. It did seem counter intuitive to how Kane had been acting earlier, perhaps he genuinely didn't care.
Eliza

Eliza on the other hand huffed a bit at Victorique's question, her eyes narrowing, "That IS my family you are indirectly asking about, of course not, how could you expect someone like him to remotely understand what Nobles are like, last time I checked he isn't getting to know Nobles on a regular basis, none with any sense of dignity or self worth would. I can assure you the Nobles of Rotia are some of the finest people you'll ever meet, of course house matters, there are some I don't care for much but plenty who are educated, generous, kind, and talented." Eliza countered.

Kane piped in "Oh believe me I could talk to you until first light comes again, but I wouldn't want to risk offending someone's delicate noble ears." while he snickered looking over at Eliza briefly.

Kane then looked to Victorique once again when she asked that question, the not exactly friendly smile not leaving his face. "Well we're in Rotia, so what do you think?" He asked rhetorically.

"There's an excess of mana and monsters around here, just because it's rare for something to get in doesn't mean you should rule it out, all kinds of strange things happen around. I will say that I'm not an Evergate native so about what goes on around here specifically I don't know the most of, This is also my first..formal "solo show" since good ol' pops passed away." He said not seeming particularly sad at this fact.

"What I can tell you is that weird stuff like this happens all over Rotia, people kill people without a known motive if you follow the gossip enough, I know I said that It wouldn't surprise me if the guy did it cause you know how Nobles can be but if a monster was involved or some kind of bad actor it wouldn't surprise me at all." Kane said.

"Especially if she's telling the truth about what her brother is like." He said gesturing to Eliza once more.

Victorique's sudden laughing, made Kane's smirk shift to a more serious face briefly as he just watched her have an outburst which attracted the attention of some nearby people walking by, even Eliza sort of looked a bit bewildered particularly because it was like suddenly Victorique seemed like she was a much bigger threatening person thanks to the weird sound that was heard with her [Bulvark's Touch].

As quick as Kane's look at gone from his face it came back even more prominent. "Oh, you didn't tell me you were that kind of gal, your life actually sounds more interesting and fun than I originally thought you know that? Well good news for you is that I don't really care, so I think I'll tag along, cause this is getting interesting even if I tried to tell it to you straight." Kane replied, undeterred, rather he looked entertained to some degree instead.

When Victorique said that the reputations didn't matter as much as their ability to seek the truth Eliza almost had a double take, before she reluctantly nodded, "Thank you." She replied, a bit less thrilled, as she still chose to walk near Victorique, with Victorique's use of Insight D, she'd be able to see that Even though Eliza hadn't been exactly thrilled with Victorique revealing all of that information, she still looked at Kane with a distain occasionally and briefly like he was something to be avoided.

Surprisngly despite her initial thoughts, Ultimate Past Detective gave her insight into something most unusual, like there was a faint white glow coming from the small holes, and almost like the sound of something moving within the tiny hole, a small white strand visible and retracting.
At the actual scene of the crime the small holes were quite small and thin which Victorique could pick up on with her heightened senses. In addition thanks to Ultimate Detective she noticed that there were specs of dried blood against the on the border wall on the interior, near where the small holes were facing. Ultimate Future Detective didn't appear to reveal much more evidence than the first ability had, however she did notice with greater clarity Kane looking around briefly standing off to the side as if he was about to speak but then pausing. Eliza was also standing off to the side watching the scene unfold, except she actually looked a bit distracted..perhaps slightly nervous, before both events occurred some seconds later. As for other details the buildings were a bit far away from the wall where the blood was which made sense none of these residential buildings of the lower class were going to be too close to the more militant zone of operation.

While Victorique was hard at work, and things were back in the present vision wise Kane finally spoke up. "So..you seeing anything interesting here?" He'd ask seeming out of curiosity, no longer a smirk on his face or an unfriendly look but one that was a bit more serious and perhaps a bit restless.

"Yeah that'd be pretty great if someone as totally cool as yourself got to see me in action..I could totes show you around and we could see what happens Maybe I'll get to see you in action some time too." She beamed seemingly receptive to the later more vague line as she giggled a bit after. She looked curiously over at where Orchid had been looking over at, but soon her drink arrived so she refocused her attention on it, as she took a drink and thanked the person who dropped it off. She took note of what Orchid told her.

"Ooh the Draft Dragon Inn, it sounds like, yeah okay, Maybe we can hang later then since it sounds like you gotta get going on important business."

Dafne lit up when her drink was paid for and she received Orchid's business card. "Thanks Orchid~ I'll try not too~ Make sure you stay safe out there too, I dunno where you're going but outside of the walls can be kinda dicey in Rotia depending on where you go..like I was mentioning earlier, anyway see you later~" She said, giving a small farewell wave, it sounded like she'd be down to contact Orchid later and hang out some more if possible. She looked quite impressed when Orchid went on her way jumping out just like that! She really was strong! was all Dafne could think to herself.

Thankfully for Orchid, while one might assume that a Orc who was doing parkour and jumping about might be more notable to more people, given how grey and plain the sky was today as well as people just going about their business there just were not many who were looking up at the roofs of the buildings. People who were higher up in the buildings were typically looking outward rather than up, people who sat taller in the mechs were largely looking forward and focusing on piloting, not on the Orc who skillfully followed after Victorique in this way. Additionally, thankfully there didn't seem to be any obvious hostiles around and about at least for the moment as Orchid moved along, of course that didn't mean that something unusual couldn't crop up in the near future, so the extra vigilance was no doubtedly helpful to Victorique and company.

What was a bit unusual was that from Orchid's vantage point nearby one of the buildings that was farther away from the crime scene she could see that the same white haired Noble guy was speaking to some grey hooded figure in an alleyway of sorts, the details of the figure were ab it harder to make out beyond that with how cloaked they were and the distance, but it was still something notable, that wasn't exactly in the ordinary.

Every now and again the owl bear got looks from people out of curiosity, simply they were not used to seeing a [beast] like him there with such an impressive stature. Overall it was more of looks of interest rather than hostility or coldness, some of them were a bit intimidated nevertheless.

Professor Neco

Professor Neco smiled warmly at what Gyld had to say to him. "Say what you will about the leadership in this kingdom, but I too am of the belief that it takes certain types of people to have the will and determination to live somewhere like this in the realm. I must admit I'm mostly here for my own research purposes, but there are many who see this place as their homeland, and no matter how difficult it can be they desire to protect Rotia and make it prosper between the less than ideal climate and multitude of monsters being so much comparatively closer to the Dark Continent than other areas of the realm, I must admit I find the grit for success commendable."

Once they were actually at the Lab as aforementioned Prof. Neco was once again pleased that his new [beast] companion seemed pleased with what he could see of the interior of his lab without even having entered the premise yet. He thanked Gyld but now there was this young woman to talk to, as his ear twitched and he listened in to why she was there.

"It's certainly nice to meet you Ms. Penrose! I can't say I was expecting someone from as far away as Ryke this far North, never mind somewhere like Evergate, regardless it's a great to have you here, and yes! I am Professor Neco."

His eyes seemed to practically sparkle when he heard her reason for being there. "I see you are conducting your own field research! That is quite an academic accomplishment, you know I came all the way up here myself for similar reasons, studying the wild life of these harsh lands, I too find the way mana washes up most curious, there is still quite a bit unknown about the Dark Continent too which if you ask me is likely playing some role in all of this given it's proximity."

"I would certainly be more than happy to assist you on this journey of yours, actually I think that it could tie in quite well with what I'm planning on doing with my new friend here." He'd gesture to Gyld.

"And yes that there! Is a Frost Basilisk eye, I am very familiar with those indeed! Quite ferocious predators, whoever told you that is certainly correct, that can assist in helping you detect the mana flows, as well as what could possibly be giving it off, of course that doesn't quite answer why it's washing up, but it certainly puts the project a step in the right direction to figuring out why."

"Please feel free to come in, and make yourselves at home. I can show you my notes on that eye and explain."
He said, gesturing in. Presuming that the party finally entered the space,

There were a wide array of books, note books, and papers, as well as scientific measuring instruments, jars, and other odds and ends all throughout. Of course there was the telescope area up above.

He then made his way over to a shelf and pulled out a notebook, and started to flip through it, until he pulled up a hand drawn diagram of the eye in the amulet, and put it down flat on his desk. It had each part of the eye named, as well as notes written in Beastial and thankfully common as well. Whatever kind of research Neco had been doing it seemed he had a wider audience in mind.

"You see the eye changes color depending on if it's detecting mana from a [Construct], [Beast] [Fae], [Human] or [Monster] How it does this exactly function from a magical or biological process I'm not entirely sure, but I do know that it is most likely due to the fact that Frost Basilisk seems to prefer to prey on live beings who are capable of magic, perhaps it gains more sustenance this way..of course the latter is a theory but nevertheless..this eye will certainly be of use, since it can let you know the aforementioned and of course if you are close enough to any mana for it to detect, even if it isn't immediately visible."
He'd then ook between Gyld and her.
"Now then, I'd prepose, since I'm here with the both of you, that we strongly consider going out on our escapades together, you need to get to the shoreline no doubt, and the white bear of the North which he and I are seeking are likely to be found near the shore, so if..he does not mind I would have no problem with you accompanying us Ms. Penrose so that I could provide you additional support as well in your endeavors."

Mentions: Kane/Eliza TheTimePiece TheTimePiece
Languages: Common | <Beastial> | [Terran] | {Sylvan}

She wasn't shaken by Kane's reply in the slightest. If anything, she was almost a little... proud? “Don't worry on my behalf, I know what I'm doing well enough. Besides, aren't you scheduled to execute someone for the exact opposite? Going too far after merely being insulted?” She reassured him, but whether that was true or not was another question. Although it did raise a valid question. “Come to think of how high is the chance that Adriano insulted the wrong person and got set-up himself, by someone with a gruesome sense of irony?” She chuckled at his remark on the nobility. “For someone warning me to watch my words, you seem awfully eager to get your own head on the chopping block as well.”

She silently heard Eliza counter some of it, nodding along, not wanting to risk losing her connection to this source of influence and information. “Well, I can only draw conclusions based on what I know, so I can say I know at least one Rotian noble well enough to know she seems to be the good sort.” There, that barely hidden compliment should probably ensure their continued cooperation.

Kane's information on Evergate and Rotia was quickly recorded in her [Eidetic Memory] as it seemed relevant enough. “An excess of mana, multiple similar cases that might or might not be related, possibly with bad actor involved. Well, that doesn't rule out anything. I guess we'd best see the scene... perhaps see if we can speak to Adriano himself somehow.”

After Kane's reply, she smiled. He reminded her a little of Arthur. That was good. Arthur had been fun enough. Also surprisingly easy to manipulate. She wondered if the same would go for Kane. He did seem to have some clear buttons to push, after all. On the other hand, Eliza seemed like she was still on board, even after all the revelations, so she figured that worked out well enough.

As she was using her detective abilities, she did what she usually did. Talking aloud. Both to help herself memorise with her [Eidetic Memory] and to see if there'd be anything to discuss later. It was a lot easier than going through everything and ask about it all later. She just hoped the other two would at least be clever enough to keep up. “Would you look at that...” She mumbled, as she peered into the past. Then she spoke up more clearly. “Some sort of faint white glowing... tendril like things? Retracting from those holes just before we approached. Like magic worms trying to hide from us. I could even hear them moving about.”

She then went about the place in the present. “Some blood remaining near the walls... to where the holes were facing...” There were some options there. Was this magic used to kill the kid with and frame Adriano? Was this something that had been used to control Adriano into killing the kid? Actually... hm... “Working hypothesis, based on little evidence, but plausible enough... The white tendril-like magic things that came from these small holes were used to control Adriano into killing the kid. Hence they face where the blood is at on the walls. He's been set-up by some monster or mage. Potentially a hired-hand as well.”

Yes, that was a fun hypothesis to go by. However, something else bothered her. “Why do you both seem distract and restless all of a sudden? I know this is the place of a crime scene and all, but I feel like I'm missing something. Are you two holding something back about this place?” She'd check.

Ah, come to think of it, her earlier question! “Also, how big is the chance I'd be able to speak to Adriano myself? His testimony should be worth a lot in order to put some things into context. See if I can support or refute this hypothesis of mine.“ That'd be next on her list. Meeting Adriano.

Nice to meet you both." She bowed her head a bit after introducing herself

Gyld, the majestic owlbear, stood tall as he regarded the newcomer, his penetrating gaze taking in her form and demeanor. His vanity, so inherent in his character, responded well to Phoebe's respectful introduction. Still, he wanted to remain the center of attention as long as possible. Despite his intimidating presence, Gyld thrived on admiration and reverence, his ego stroked by the recognition and respect he received.

“A pleasure, Phoebe Penrose,” he rumbled in response doing his best Spirit Beast Tribe Protector impression, his voice deep and resonating, a testament to his attempt to seem powerful. His feathered chest puffed out slightly, preening under the acknowledgement, “Your presence adds another spark of intrigue to this fascinating gathering.” He couldn't help himself to talk regal and noble, it usually inspired such awe and reverence in humanoids.

His wise, owl-like eyes studied her for a moment more, noting her confidence and the aura of magical energy that surrounded her. Gyld found magic users weird, if he was being quite honest. Their abilities came from manipulating and hacking the world's mana through words, gestures, and objections, which was so unlike his own connection with nature. Still, such beings were plentiful and made great shamans and wise people to a tribe.

“From Ryke, you say? Most of the human cities blur together. Is that a city's of magical prowess? How fortunate we are for a travelling mage to get caught it the gravity of my spiritual quest. Truly professor, your visions of my arrival, herald so much more for us!” He couldn't help but get excited to finally start building momentum. It was so hard to start over, having been a spiritual beast protecting a vast tribe of millions for thousands of years, to now be forced to start over.

His form, ever a combination of owl and bear, seemed to ripple subtly with the dark green energy that encompassed him. It wanted to intrigue this new comer, perhaps pique her interest so she would want to give him attention, studying him or whatever else traveling mages and scientists did. The magic of the Eternal Glade echoed within his very being, responding to his mood and thoughts. At this moment, it was a calm, curious flow that mirrored his interest in the mage.

His demeanor, however, remained unaltered. He held himself with the same regal bearing, exuding the untamed beauty and strength that were the hallmarks of his kind.

before looking at the cat person.

He tried not to show his massive disappointment as Phoebe practically ignored him like he didn't exist! It was humiliating to be so casually ignored, as this mage focused on the professor instead of him! It was cruel. It made him want to turn into an owl and fly away or perhaps the bear and maul her for such insolence! But no, he was amongst humans. He vaguely remembered their ways from his past life.

Gyld held himself still as stone, but inside, the insult rankled. How dare this mage overlook him? His sharp eyes, the piercing orange of a late autumn sunset, narrowed in offense. A deep growl rose in his throat, though he quickly silenced it. He was not here to fight, and he would not be baited into such petty displays of aggression.

The proud owlbear’s body tensed, feathers bristling slightly. He turned his head, affording Phoebe nothing but a profile of his fierce beak. He wouldn't leave - the thought of flight or violent retribution squashed immediately - but he would also not provide the mage the courtesy of his attention if he was not worthy of hers.

“Humph,” he rumbled softly, a low, rumbling note of displeasure. He then took a few steps back, withdrawing a little from the conversation. He crossed his powerful owl forearms, and let his gaze drift around the environment. He pretended like the architecture and gadgetry of the professor was more important than the conversation they pair had.

While his pride had been dented, he was still the wise, observant creature of the wild. He would take this opportunity to learn more about this place, his acute senses keenly attuned to his surroundings. The talk of mana, the amulet, the architecture, the curious cat professor, and this dismissive mage - all were threads in the complex tapestry of this new adventure.

"I would certainly be more than happy to assist you on this journey of yours, actually I think that it could tie in quite well with what I'm planning on doing with my new friend here." He'd gesture to Gyld.

Gyld's eyes were drawn back to the professor and the mage at his words, a low rumble of satisfaction rumbling in his chest. His feathery brows lifted slightly, the tip of his beak tilting up in acknowledgment as he was given the respect he deserved. He straightened up, the prickling offense from before easing away under the professor's inclusive gesture.

"Ah, of course, Professor Neco," Gyld began, a touch of warmth seeping into his deep, resonant voice. "I'm eager to lend my assistance, as long as it benefits the cause of understanding this world and its natural wonders."

His eyes glinted in the fading light, a renewed sense of purpose burning within them. The aura of the wild around him seemed to ripple, responding to his unspoken command, to his unbreakable bond with nature. If this was his journey, he would make sure it was a grand one, worthy of his status and abilities.

"And Phoebe," he said, dropping any honorific she might be due, turning his head to glance at her, his tone measured, but not unfriendly. "I'd be interested to see how your participation in our journey unfolds. The world has much to teach us all, some more than others, no?"

Despite the initial setback, Gyld found himself intrigued by the turn of events. The prospect of working alongside the professor and the mage, the investigation of the mana influx and the mysterious amulet, everything was shaping up to be an interesting adventure. It had to all be connected to his vision, more threads of fate weaving together to aid him on his quest. And after all, the forest did not dwell on the offenses of the past. It moved on adjusting to the whims of the environment, thriving in the wake of a forest fire as easily as a spring rain. Like nature itself, Gyld decided to move on and not let the slights of the past deter him from the path that lay before him.

Gyld took in the surroundings with an appreciative glance. His eyes gleamed with curiosity as he examined the various papers, books, and instruments spread across the lab. His keen gaze fell on the diagram of the Frost Basilisk's eye, an interested hum escaping him as the professor detailed its function. He never had a chance to see such wonders up close, let alone have their mysteries explained by a learned individual. This was an entirely new realm of knowledge, and he found it unexpectedly intriguing.

The professor then looked between Gyld and Phoebe

"Now then, I'd propose, since I'm here with the both of you, that we strongly consider going out on our escapades together, you need to get to the shoreline no doubt, and the white bear of the North which he and I are seeking are likely to be found near the shore, so if..he does not mind I would have no problem with you accompanying us Ms. Penrose so that I could provide you additional support as well in your endeavors."

Gyld listened to the professor with a nonchalant air, though he was inwardly pleased that he was becoming the center of this little gathering. His eyes flicked to the diagram of the Frost Basilisk's eye, expressing an aloof interest, though his thoughts were more on the quest he was about to undertake.

When the professor suggested they join forces, Gyld took a moment to consider this, though not without a touch of vanity. He had come here with a very personal mission in mind. The pursuit of the White Bear of the North was his endeavor, one born from his own visions. The mage's quest was of little consequence to him initially, but the idea of having others assist him on his journey, contributing to his grand mission, was appealing.

"Well, Professor Neco," he began, fixing his gaze on the catlike researcher with an air of self-importance, "As a noble creature of nature, it is my duty to help those lesser beings understand the world around us." His eyes then moved to Phoebe, the corners of his beak pulling back in a smug grin. "As it turns out, your aims align with my own. I could certainly use the assistance on my noble quest."

The grandiosity in his tone was evident as he continued, "I am, after all, on a mission of great importance. The pursuit of the White Bear of the North is no small feat, and having a mage such as yourself could be... beneficial." Despite his egotistical words, it was clear that Gyld was excited about the prospect of the journey ahead. The chance to further understand his bear nature and the world around him, while also being the center of attention, was an opportunity he relished.

"Oh, is that so? Well, that'd be perfect then! I'd feel bad about taking up too much of the Professor's time when you had business with him first, Gyld." That was the pink haired mage's response when Professor Neco said that her quest could potentially tie in well with Gyld's business with the professor, but when she looked over to the owl bear, it seemed a bit... distant? Perhaps displeased or distressed, given the sounds the beastkin was making? She couldn't quite tell. Phoebe had pretty much no experience in reading the emotions of beastkin such as Gyld, him being the first non-humanoid beastkin she'd encountered since being reborn into this world. Even if she did, she couldn't exactly get a good view of his face right now, with only his beak being in her line of sight. Was it something she said? Unsure of what to do, she decided to not bother him further, lest she potentially makes things worse by prying into things that she shouldn't be.

It seemed that Phoebe's decision to not say anything would be the right one as Gyld was brought back into the conversation by the Professor. Phoebe didn't pay too much mind to Gyld's usage of her first name as opposed to the Professor's usage of her surname, being used to the practice. It the owl-bear's next statement, however, that had Phoebe a little intrigued, as they were worded a bit interestingly to Phoebe. It sounded something akin to what a pastor would say to a church goer. "I'm interested in seeing where this journey leads as well..."

As the group entered the Professor's lab, Phoebe, ever the [Bibliophile], was in awe with the sheer amount of literature the Professor had collected. "Oh, wow! This is quite the collection you have Professor!" so when the Professor pulled out a notebook from one of the shelves and presented its contents to Gyld and herself, she listened very intently, taking in all the information about the amulet. "Fascinating..." Phoebe whispered aloud to no one in particular. To think that a creature's eye could not only detect the presence of mana, but also differentiate the source? The mechanisms of magic in this world had always captivated Phoebe ever since she was reborn and the more she studied more mysteries seemed to emerge, each more puzzling and captivating than the last. This time is definitely no exception, with Phoebe growing more excited about her little research study by the second.

Well, that comment from Gyld about lesser beings was a little strange, to say the least, after the Professor proposed her tagging along with them. Combined with the way Gyld was describing the quest they were going on, he seemed more like some sort of cult recruiter more than just an ordinary preacher, as was Phoebe's previous impression. In any case, cult follower or not, she'd rather not get on Gyld's bad side lest she be on the receiving end of his claws. At least Gyld agreed to let Phoebe join them, so that seemed like a good indicator that she wasn't. "Right... well, I do have a couple of attack spells up my sleeve so I can definitely help you in that mission, just as long as the bear isn't too close." Phoebe was silent for a moment before speaking again, as if she'd just remembered something. "Oh, and to answer your question about Ryken from earlier, Gyld, I'd say it would be more fitting to call it a commercial city more than anything, though it does have a magic academy." She cleared her throat a bit before continuing. "By the way, where are you from Gyld? I've never met a beastkin such as yourself before."

So far everything was going according to plan. No one noticed her, and Orchid wasn't having any particularly difficult time keeping up with Victorique. She was still with those other two folks, and Orchid's senses weren't nearly sharp enough for her to listen from afar, but so long as it doesn't look like any trouble was brewing Orchid can leave Victorique to take care of herself for now. Beyond the fact no one spotted her yet, Orchid didn't notice anything amiss or at least immediately dangerous, however as she was watching she did spot a familiar length of white hair. Now, white hair wasn't too uncommon in this world since Orchid has been alive, but she's pretty sure this was the same guy. But he was talking to some grey hood. Now this was sketchy.

Orchid could make some assumptions, but without knowing the details she can't really just jump the gun and start throwing accusations. Maybe this grey hood was also investigating the murders. Or maybe they're the ones responsible for it. Either way Orchid can't really say until she gathers more info, but even she didn't want to test her luck trying to be so sneaky. Going beneath (or above) notice is one thing, but actively trying to sneak up on some folks who are intentionally trying to be stealthy, and thus likely are on alert for anyone spying on them, would not work in Orchid's favor. However Orchid also didn't want to lose the trail... Maybe it was time to let Victorique know she's here? But Orchid didn't want to reveal herself either: if she loses the element of surprise, her enemies could be able to counter her in a pinch.

Ultimately Orchid opted to keep eyes on the white-haired noble and the grey cloak, not close enough to listen but close enough to watch them. See if they do anything like exchange a letter or something. Orchid could still see Victorique from her vantage point so unless the halfling finds a clue that takes her somewhere smaller and darker, Orchid ought to be able to keep track of both events. But for now, her focus was on the grey cloak. Orchid will see if she can't shadow him long enough to figure out where he's going, or at least what he looks like. "Damn, next time I get the points for it I ought to invest in a familiar. Someone who can do this sneaky shit without me...."

Kane Blackburne
crop.jpg
Kane's less than friendly grin returned once more when Victorique reassured him that she in fact knew what she was doing. There was the fact that they didn't actually know for what reason he did the murder just that the evidence suggested that he committed it.

"I think you know that it's hard to say, but it wouldn't surprise me with some of the kinds of people in Rotia..Would be a bit harder to achieve than most can do with how the titles work and all..not that I know a ton about them, but to my understanding..it'd take some skill to make happen." Kane replied matter of fact about her comment about how likely it was he could have been set up.He did try warning her in earnest, just because Kane was being loose lipped with his tongue didn't necessarily mean that Victorique was best following suit, Kane was in a rather unique position to say the least, he also had a good idea of which were okay to talk to how he wanted and when, the fact that the family was currently under scrutiny gave more wiggle room but Kane's position and personality made him a bit more likely to take social risks, after all he was already near the bottom of the barrel, he didn't have a lot to loose and he knew that they needed people like him to do the dirty work so there was some leeway there.

Instead of answering her directly for the rest of it Kane merely flashed a dark grin in response to her chuckling and comment about him not being concerned about him ending up on the chopping block. There was much more there than he cared to or had time to get into.

Eliza on the other hand appeared somewhat pleased at least that Victorique was being fair about her assessment that not all nobles were bad, even if Eliza had continued to not look the most pleased during the majority of Kane's rather pessimistic dialogue about Rotia's elites
---
Back at the actual crime scene at hand, Kane listened to Victorique's revelations and was somewhat surprised with what she said, but he didn't show it on his face, as it had returned to it's usual default look.

"I didn't know you had the abilities of a seer." Kane said with a bit of a chuckle. "Sounds like there are quite a few possibilities then based on what you're saying. Can't say I know much about what you're talking, probably doesn't help that i couldn't see it or hear it.."
Eliza

Eliza on the other hand looked creeped out just by Victorique's descriptions. "You..don't really think that a Thing like that could have done something to Adriano do you?" She asked sounding upset as she clenched her fist a bit.

"I don't know anyone who would truly want to do something like that to him, he hasn't done anything wrong..such a kind person too, the very idea of it just utterly repulses me.. and to answer your other question, just being at the very sight where something so terrible took place I can't help but wonder what happened and think about that poor child..but..I also just felt something..dark just now I'm...not sure what it was."

She said sounding a bit emotional with that line, as she looked around the space once more.
---
Kane looked back at Victorique like she had two heads before he said "What? I'm perfectly fine, Not sure what you're getting at." He said crossing his arms briefly, before bringing them back down to his sides, looking sort of like he was posturing.

Before he perked up a bit hearing Victorique bring up the possibility of seeing Adriano.

"Yeah maybe I could arrange something like that. In the time I spent helping my father you get to know how things work around Rotia..I can lead you to him for a visit but what's in it for me? Heck I can lead you to the entrance you need right now for free if you want to follow, but entering? I'm not running a charity here, especially when everyone's on high alert..And you know I'm one of the only ones around here who'd even entertain the idea who has a chance they obviously won't let his family in."

"Like I said..doesn't mater too much to me either way, I'd be extending this offer just cause..you interest me.."
Kane asked a bit of a grin forming once more.

"Why thank you, I suppose it comes with the field, as I can tell you're an aspiring academic in magic based on what I've heard, you are certainly more than welcome to take a look at my books anytime, or if there are any you'd see value in borrowing just let me know." He replied evidently quite pleased by the compliment of his collection of sorts.

As the owl bear had looked around the room, it only became more apparent just how many books there were around them from notebooks, literature, science, magic, and nature books it really was like it's own private library of sorts dedicated to academia.

Professor Neco smiled warmly at the owl bear as he reaffirmed that he would partake. "Well then, it's only natural that someone with your pedigree would be interested in such a noble goal as uncovering how the nature of this land functions." He said cheerily in response to Gyld. Not seemingly taking notice or if he did, at least not reacting to Gyld's mood shift which had been developing only earlier which had been eased by the inclusion, even if his ears had twitched a bit at the 'humph' sound which the [beast] had made.

"And of course as you say it's only even more fitting that someone so noble partakes in this great academic endeavor on both fronts..our goals are very much aligned, both exploring what's found in nature, isn't it all rather exciting?" He continued to bring the positive vibes, Keeping the eye diagram open for now as he looked to the pair.

"You see Ms. Penrose, I've been having visions of him coming here, they run in the family..and I can attest that means there's something special coming in the future, I would take what he has to say with sincere thought..and think about the fact that there's a very likely chance that all of our paths are crossing for a reason so..I..appreciate both your willingness to share the aid which I can provide, just means that I'll need to gather more supplies than I originally thought which is fine, I have plenty in storage.."

Professor Neco replied.

"We'll definitely be wanting more vials of that anti-venom as well, magic as useful as it is and distance or not, you really do not want to suffer too many blows from the white bear which I've seen.."

After mentioning that Professor Neco made his way over to a wooden trap door of sorts off to the side near one of the bookshelves and opened it up, revealing a space below with a wooden ladder leading down into the wooden basement space which there appeared to be a lot of supplies stocked on shelves all packaged and labelled accordingly, sorted by a system which Professor Neco had picked, as the space automatically lit up revealing this once the door had been opened, perhaps some kind of magic at play in the building.

He then paused and looked to the Phoebe, not going down yet at the mention of Ryken once more. "Ah, yes! I've certainly heard of that place, but I must admit I'm not always the most versed in human settlements either, you see I originally come from the Republic. Given the place's currency is used al over the realm it doesn't surprise me that it's a commercial powerhouse as you mention." He said.

"Now then..if either of you would like to see what I have to offer, of course I invite either of you to take a look and pack anything you find of value on our journey, I have some bags which will let us carry goods with relative ease for the trip..they can also hold quite a bit more than they look while also reducing the weight..not that I think all three of us would have an issue with that anyway." He said with a bit of a warm laugh, looking to Gyld, implying he was the physically strongest there which was more than likely true. Professor Neco motioned to a pile below of sacks which had strings on them so that they could be worn more like a back pack, at an initial glance their size looked modest.
The supplies were varied from preserved rations, repellent, flint and steel, ropes, binocular like instruments, water skins, medical supplies, as well as cold resistant dark colored cloaks as well as a variety of other goods ideal for transversing the harsh climate that was the Rotian wilderness.

Thankfully for Orchid she still had managed to go unnoticed for the time being with the method of trailing she had selected being far away. Granted there were some closer calls as she progressed with occasionally some people looking inquisitively up briefly as the roamed the streets thinking perhaps they had seen something but then deciding to move onwards. Given the distance thankfully the hoods still hadn't noticed Orchid nor was there a good chance they would without some kind of magic.

While this was transpiring and Orchid was reflecting upon the fact that she wished she had the points to invest in a familiar to take care of more of the stealth type work, she'd notice much closer to her now there were more grey hoods who were conjugating on the other side on the street closest to her in an alley way not all that far away from where she was, there was at least five of them who suddenly appeared as if out of thin air toward the back of the alley way. Those who suddenly appeared in the dark more private space circled up and began having a conversation in Terran with each other, their defining facial features obscured by their hooded cloaks.

"Her succession was unjust.." One of the taller and lankier ones said with a decidedly male voice.

A stouter one spoke up in response who had a deeper voice than the taller one , "Yes..we all know that foul play was involved..but we're running out of time to act."

A grey hood who was more average height also spoke up, but the voice was more feminine compared to the other two, "But they have eyes everywhere, this place may not be secure as we speak.." She said looking out from the dark corner which the group had gathered, toward the street where a sizable guard Mecha came thumping down it.

The tall one replied, "Well..It's not like we have much choice in the matter, today just happened to fall on one where the damned monsters were acting up.."

The stout one followed up with, "Well..we should meet up with Affonso soon, he'll be waiting to hear our reports.." The others seemed to nod in agreement.

Two of the other hoods seemed to stay quiet and listen to the conversation for the time being.
