The mechs are piloted by a person. A.I. is considerably more advanced than in real life but not quite yet to the level of say Halo. Mostly its A.I. or computers able to conduct vast algorithms and calculations in a very fast amount of time to properly keep a star ship going (like navigation or plot coordinates). Cybernetics do exist roughly to the level of Ghost in the Shell.
