U.S.A 2023
It's still unclear what happened on August 14th 2023. Most have opinions and speculations, some more believable than others.
The main belief, and probably the most likely tale of events is that the apocalypse is due to the government's experiments with medicines and scientific research. The last 4 years in the science field made huge developments with healthcare, technology and weaponry. The world was finally beginning to cure some of the most deadliest diseases and illnesses. But something went very, very wrong. Patient X escaped a facility somewhere outside of New York and humanity soon crumbled under the consequences.
Patient X took down anyone and everyone who got too close, eating their flesh and leaving them for dead.
So what happened? The dead were piled up whilst quarantine zones were set up to protect the remaining civilians of New York City. Areas were dedicated to those who had been bitten or had ingested the blood of the infected, but it wasn't enough to prevent the infection from spreading and soon the quarantine zones were nothing more than an old, feeble attempt to save humanity.
The infection spread across the USA like wildfire, state-upon-state calling in to announce that they too were affected with the plague of "zombies". Though there was word of other countries stepping in to help, for the civilians who didn't work for the government, they were left to survive by themselves. Now most survivors aren't sure if there ever was aid from other countries. Are the other countries plagued by the infection too? No one can be sure.
The Infected
To avoid the infection, survivors must avoid Zombie bites or scratches, and must not ingest any blood or flesh of the infected. If one is bitten, it takes up to 72 hours for the infection to spread to the brain before the body will shut down for 24 hours or more. When the bitten reawakens, they will no longer be the person they were. Any thoughts, emotions or consciousness is replaced with one thought - feed.
Whilst the majority of Zombies are slow-moving and only dangerous in large numbers. There are those who have adapted to be agile and speedy. It is unclear as to whether the faster, more dangerous zombies are that way due to the person they were before, if it's just some kind of adaptation within the infection.
To kill a zombie, it is advised to either decapitate them or set them alight. A zombie that has been stabbed or shot may still be alive and not down for the count. Most survivors will set fire to the bodies even if the head has been removed, though sometimes that option may not be granted.
World State
It's been about a year since the apocalypse started. Whilst most of the world are dead or infected, there are still members of society who have survived and remain to call the states their home. There is no electricity, unless you're lucky enough to find a generator. It is ill-advised to drink water from any source that is not running, fresh water. Animals have not caught the infection, from what has been seen so far, though some speculate whether the infection might adapt to live in animals too.
Supplies are scarce, but survivors are able to find some if they know where to look.
Authorities and the law are no longer upheld, though there is apparently a group called The Preservers who offer protection to survivors and have a base on the border of Alaska. This is unconfirmed, and most believe it a myth used to give people hope.
The RP
Somewhere in Nevada, 2024.
Hot rays beat down onto the ground of the desert, warming the sand and making it more akin to hot coals. For folks at Restoration Point, that was normal. It sure as hell beat hunkering down in the city and trying to survive the night. There was only about 20 survivors in this camp, and it had kept them safe for almost three months now. But supplies were wearing thin, and they knew they'd have to move along soon or risk sending scouters out to the nearest ghost town or city to try and replenish their resources. The small civilisation had scouters before, but when they were sent out to find supplies or somewhere to move, they never returned.
As usual, a meeting was called amongst the members to decide on their next move. With only 2 weeks worth of food and water left for the group, it was time to find a solution. There were valid arguments on each side, but the final decision was to send 5 capable members out into the desert in hopes that they'd return before the supplies ran dry.
