Helvamark is a densely wooded region full of ghost towns and abandoned mines. Only a few people actually live here. But something odd happens at night. Abandoned towns become lively and it seems as if the dead come to life for the night. Additionally, they act like every night is a December night, going to a Christmas market in the forest, drinking hot chocolate, eating roasted chestnuts. But Helvamark as a dark secret why this happens. Why during day only skeletons are found in the towns and at night the dead rise looking like normal humans and also why the snow never thaws. Some think this place might be a sort of purgatory or the first layer of hell and that the actual living inhabitants cant leave this place. Or maybe those who are actually alive guard this place and the dead. Not much is known and despite a couple of pristine roads, rarely does anyone come visit here.
Helvamark: A densely wooded region with sparse population, but many skeletons in the ghost towns. The landscape is hilly with narrow valleys, some only wide enough for one or two houses. Ever so often a town or village is found. Often just a dozen or less people actually live in the towns as everything else is dead, literally. The living usually go hunting or logging for money, some have found more modern occupations.
There is a winter market/Christmas market in the middle of the forest where people can trek to and drink spiced wine or hot chocolate and eat grilled sausage. Here both the living and the dead can interact with barely a care in the world.
Culture: The culture is like a cross between southwest German and Finnish culture. Most common forms of meat are deer, elk and reindeer. Most common plant foods are wild berries (blueberries, raspberries, black currant, elderberry) or root vegetables like cassava or potatoes.
The plot is rather a psychological slice of life or a rather light-hearted horror. Basically the living characters are borderline insane because of the circumstances and their past.
