Höfðingi

taken

The Hofðingi is the commander-in-chief, overseeing the entirety of the Vorðnir both in wartime and in peace. All orders, from the training of apprentices to the designation of patrols all come from them, and for the most part, their word is considered law.

Formaðr

open

Second in command to the Hofðingi, the Formaðr sees to it that their orders are carried out and enforced, often serving as de facto leader should the chief ever be absent or indisposed. A degree of succession occurs between the two, as the Hofðingi chooses their Formaðr, who will in turn take their place should the chief die in battle, is exiled, or willingly retires.

Foringnir

open

The Foringnir are the field commanders, in charge of the various "wings" assigned to them by the Hofðingi. While they all answer to the chief's orders, how each Foringi run their respective wings is never the same, and as such, different creeds have arisen over the course of the millenium.

Drengnir

open

The Drengnir are the heart of the order, the warriors who fly forward upon their dragons to protect the Realms from those who would see them destroyed once more. Their duties to this end are many, from the training of the Svennir and patrolling of borders, to taking the fight directly to the enemy in times of total war.

Svennir

open

The Svennir are the apprentices, destined to follow in the footsteps of those before them as the next generation of dragon riders. For now, however, they train with their partners under the careful watch of the Drengnir, until they are considered ready to join a wing in combat.

Einnsál

open

The Einnsál are outliers within the Vorðnir, for they are without dragons, be it due to tragedy or an inability to form a bond with the great beings. Despite this, neither are cast out, for it was their inherent affinity that they were initially chosen for, and whatever talents they possess are often employed elsewhere within the order. Some, however, feel themselves to be nothing but a burden, and often keep themselves at distance from the rest of their peers.

extra information.

While I encourage player freedom behind the characters you wish to create for the most part, there are several things I do wish for you to keep in mind before you submit your form. If there's anything you need clarification on, don't be afraid to ask, and I'll update these notes accordingly.

This roleplay's setting is based in Norse mythology, which has its roots in the Scandinavian and Germanic regions, so bear that in mind during the process!

The Höfðingi, Formaðr, and Foringnir are all considered high positions in the Vorðnir, and thus have limited spots. These are NOT on a first-come-first-serve basis—DM me if you wish to make a reservation.
CURRENT STATUS: (0/1); (0/1); (1/3)

Players are allowed to make multiple characters for submission, but building off the last note, only one can be used for a high position if you've made a reservation beforehand.
PLEASE only make as many as you feel you can handle—I'd recommend a max of three!

For those who are new to this, please make sure to read the interest check before you apply!

Heiðrún

placeholder & scroll

Heiðrún is The G.O.A.T. His name, heiðr meaning "bright, clear" and rún meaning "secret," comes from a mythological goat that would eat the leaves from the tree of life and produce mead in her udder. He's a male in his early twenties with alarming white hair and a wiry, athletic body. A guy who came from being heralded as a master mead brewer to a trialing path of the dragon riders.

Please DM me if you want to have any sort of relationship with Eindride, i.e siblings, sibling-like, friends, mentor figure, parental figure, rivals, etc. I'd appreciate some connections :]

Arvid is a young Horned Scorchtail dragon, only a few months old, he has a personality like a puppy and follows Ein around happily.

Horned Scorchtails aren't that big compared to other dragons, but they sure are vicious. These sleek giants can't breathe fire, only able to produce large amounts of smoke to use in escape. While you might think their most menacing weapons are the flames adorning their horn and tip of their tail, that is really just a light show and hardly burns at all. The real danger about them is their scales. In exchange for giving up the ability to breathe deadly flame, like some dragons similar to them, their scales burn hotter than most, able to burn through armor and dragon scale alike. Scorchtails use their long tails in attack swooping in a U shape, hitting their prey with their scalding long tails in the process, disorienting them and knocking them out of the air. They use a similar process on land when fighting using their tail as a whip. In close combat, both in air and on land they rely mostly on their horns and the extremely hot hooks on their wings, made to hold onto their prey while their horn slowly burns its way through their enemy's vital organs, liquefying those that they didn't directly burn through.

These dragons aren't the strongest but they're considerably clever and fast. They would most likely be a common dragon in stealth missions if it were not for the fact that they glow slightly in the night. Scorchtails are affectionate, to say the least, they quickly learn to lower their body temperature enough not to hurt humans and tend to be very cuddly with everyone, showing off one of their odder characteristics as they did, their ability to purr.

Names Meaning

Logi is the word for "flame" in the Old Norse tongue, a name befitting his flickering, yet warm nature. Útangarð refers to his origins, composed of the elements útan “beyond” and garðr "enclosure”. He is of the wild, the lands that remain untamed by society. As for Fárbauti, he is every bit the “cruel striker” of his namesake, visiting his fury on all who would dare do harm to his ward.

BASICS
Full name: Helgi Grimssen;
Name meaning: Blessed, Son of Grim;
Age: 41;
Gender identity: Male;
Species: Human;

PHYSICAL
General Appearance: An exceptionally athletic man with a body that betrays his experience. Scars could be easily seen from wounds that time has healed. Normally wearing black to grey tunics and trousers, Helgi alters his combat attire by adorning red garments with blue lamellar segments. Coupled with a layer of chainmail. His round helmet also comes with a chainmail underside. Occasionally can be seen with his seashell necklace. His hair is permanently kept short while his beard is maintained by combing and balms.
Eye colour: Brown;
Hair colour: Dark Brown to Black;
Height: 6'1" aka 180 cm;
Body modifications: None, other than his beard being well-kept with a comb and weekly applying a straightening balm;

ABOUT
Rank: Drengnir;
Dragon: Sverre, The Violet Storm;
daniel-lee-doodle-purple-dragon-daniellee-2016b.jpg
Art by Daniel Lee
Abilities:

Helgi
- Is a capable and experienced warrior;
- Having several years of dealing with Sverre, Helgi learned how to accurately command and coordinate his dragon even if they aren't clearly together;
- Combat prodigy;
ace826210a699d004324862560b46d8b.jpg

Sverre
Sverre has two types of breath attacks, they are: Electric Discharge and Smoke Screen;
-Electric Discharge creates a cone of purple lightning that can paralyse a foe's body to kill them with its' power.;
-Smoke Screen suffocates an area with smoke, limiting a person/creature's ability to see. Sverre is unaffected by this, due to his purple gaze;
Lightspeed Dash is an ability/manoeuvre that Sverre can execute which constructs a thin aura of purple energy around his body that shoots him forward like Thor's lightning;

Personality:
Though Helgi is quite an experienced warrior, his general attitude is not one that befits the role when someone first thinks of a warrior. A man who is lax to others, but strict with himself. One who believes in himself strongly and his partner, Sverre. Because of this disposition, many times he places too much weight on his shoulders which someday will break his back. Helgi, like his ancestor, searches for enlightenment in other facets of the world. Through scripture, scrolls, or whatever source that he could acquire. Quick to drink like his countrymen yet oddly never becoming too inebriated. Helgi and Sverre are quite literally linked at the hip, their brotherly bond is stronger than Gleipnir. Sverre is often distrustful of other draconoids, unnecessarily assertive as well. An interesting activity that Helgi does with Sverre is doing mock fights that allow others to bet on who wins. Unsurprisingly, Sverre has won 115 bouts while Helgi is only a meagre 79.

History:
Helgi Grimssen is the descendent of a frightful warrior and poet who travelled Midgard in search of an artefact that would grant him unimaginable fervour and power. As time marched on, the poet's sanity began to splinter. Though the quest had not been entirely for nought, the knowledge that he accumulated would prove to be unsatisfactory to the obsessed man. Upon his return to the homeland, the madness had locked his mind in a vice. A bloodied clash ensued and the Grimssen line was driven from their fame into relative obscurity. It took generations of tiptoeing around chicken eggs for the respect to return to the lineage. Helgi entered into this world as the fifth son of Grimr. The weakest runt of the litter, Helgi in his time would be often overlooked by the vigils around him. Let it not go unsaid that everyone had been surprised by Helgi's combative abilities. A prodigy that would herald great fortune to the family. The prophecies and expectations have only been partly true as Helgi had been accepted into the ranks of svennir and given his own flying reptile to command.

Unexpectedly Helgi had been a poor dragon rider. Though famed for his pugnacious skillset, the concept of cooperating with his war brother had been an entirely alien idea. It did not help that Sverre at such a young age had been undoubtedly the most excitable & free-spirited dragon. Such discord was between them that a blunder was bound to occur. Then it happened. During a routine flight, the duo's bickering had gotten them lost. Alone, unsure, and inexperienced. This pair of chowderheads continued to bicker. While Sverre is a dragon, his development had not reached a level that could be invincible. Plus the dangers did not only pertain to predation, but matters of resources such as food, water, and shelter from the elements. Helgi had some minor experience in hunting, it would not be enough. Their survival hinged on the fact of them working together. It would be slow at first, however, the two began to warm up to each other. Going so far as to even understand each other without any verbalism. It took them a long time though they did succeed in the end.

As the years passed, Helgi and Sverre became members of the Drengnir and swore to uphold peace in these troublesome times.

Likes:
- Enjoys observing Flytes;
- Often playfully chases Sverre with his long axe;
- Endeavours to learn new languages;
- Sverre is an absolute child for fruits, preferring to eat fruit as a standalone or with his meat;
- Helgi sometimes grabs Sverre by the horns and headbutts the dragon though he always wears his helmet unless drunk. Sverre finds it humorous and plays along;
- Savours the taste of strong mead/beer;
Dislikes:
-Mischief;
-Cowards;
-Divinity;
-Sloppiness;
-Snow (ironic);
-Small animals of the verminous variety;

Full name: Havardr Isernvargr
Name meaning: Havardr originates in Old Norse and means 'highest guardian'. Isern is the Old English word for iron, and Vargr is a norse word refering to wolves, specifically Fenrir, Hati, and Skol.
Age: 34
Gender Identity: Male
Species: Human

PHYSICAL
1646855588696.png
Eye color: Brown.
Hair color: Chestnut Brown.
Height: 6'9"
Body modifications: Havardr's arms and back are covered in recordings of deeds deemed worthy of being recorded. From slaying a Jotunn King to his claiming of the head of a gargantuan sea serpent, and even his induction into the Drachednar. All are recorded, staining his arms and back blue with the ink.
Havardr is a monster of a man. Though he claims to come from a long and illustrious line of human warriors, most are certain that there is a smattering of giant's blood in there somewhere, though none are certain who the brave man or woman is.

ABOUT
Rank: Drengnir
Dragon: Dreki, an Omarr Dragon, is just as colossal as his rider with the weight and strength to match, allowing him to crush through just about anything in his path. It is perhaps to everyone's great relief that he is much more even tempered than his rider.
1646856201500.png
Abilities:

Havardr
  • Like most Drengnir his age, he is an expert warrior and master rider. In the carnage of the battlefield, Havardr is the undisputed king as he and Dreki bully their way through lesser foes to challenge the greatest opponent worthy of their might.
  • Surprisingly adept in bush craft, boasting he once built an entire long house by hand with nothing but his axe.
Dreki
  • Dreki is capable of spitting out either a burning ball of bile that splashes across whatever it hits, or spray a billowing cloud of fire.
  • The barbed hooks on Dreki's wings allow for him to be exceptional at grappling even larger opponents.
  • Most would expect a gargantuan Omarr wouldn't be to dexterous or have fine tuned motor control. Most would be surprised at Dreki's ability to gently grab a quill and then write with it. A useful skill when one's rider has anger management issues and needs to be restrained and not killed.
Personality: Havardr is a man of tradition. He is one of the dwindling few to honor the dead and forgotten gods, showing them that he is a worthy successor to the reborn realms. He does this the only way he knows how, by doing as he pleases. If Havardr wishes to fight giants, then he and Dreki will go and fight giants. Does he desire leviathan steaks for dinner? Than he shall glide above the waves and pounce upon the first one he sees. Only two things have kept him in check. The first being the leader of the Drachednar, though even they struggle to control him at times. The second and more reliable of the two methods have been to burden him with a Svennir, effectively forcing him to consider what the young apprentice can and cannot do. And though he does rage against being bound by the shackles of being a teacher, he does do his due diligences and has produced several fine warriors.
History:
Born into a traditionalist village, Havardr was taught at a very young age that nothing was given, that everything must be earned. If they succeeded in a raid against a rival clan, then they had earned the rights to the supplies and plunder from it, and if they did not then clearly they did not deserve it. The land of his birth did not allow for much to grow, and so these raids were common. They fought off many raids, but not all, and returned in kind. His existence, while a violent one, was exceedingly simple, boiled down into two things. Victory, or defeat, each with their own teachings. And that would have been the entirety of his life, had the Vordnir not arrived and swept him and several other promising youths away. The clans did not take kindly to these strangers simply coming in and taking their children, but what is one to say to people who's mounts were dragons? And so, as Havardr was presented to a clutch of eggs alongside the other hopefuls and an excitable and brutish dragon floundered it's way into his grasp, he was inducted, officially, into the ranks of the Vordnir.

Likes:
  • Havardr has become rather fond of carpentry and has done several large pieces depicting the forgotten and/or dead gods, and countless other small charms.
  • Both man and dragon have developed a taste for bear meat. The former claims it to be the most tender of meats while the latter says that it's truly at it's greatest when burnt black and crunches with each bite.
  • Havardr is a good natured brawler, when he chooses to be. It isn't uncommon for him to be sparring with other Dregnir and some of the older, larger, and more skilled Svennir.
  • Dreki adores warm baths. It is a challenge to find one large enough for him, but it is worth the effort in his eyes.
Dislikes:
  • Havardr, if he could help it, would never go to such a miserably hot places such as Muspelheim. Regrettably, his duties force him to go places where the heat is sweltering and seemingly trying to kill him.
  • Dreki does not like to be snuck up on, a mistake many make only once.
  • Neither Dreki or Havardr have much sympathy for those they deem unsuitable. If he is assigned a Svennir that simply cannot do what is asked of them, he will refuse to teach them any further. The current Hofdingi walks a very fine line when it comes to this. On the one had, they have lead their order well, but on the other they seem to lack the ability to care for themselves.

Life is not a fairytale. It is not sweet dreams, good fortune and fame. Vígdís has only ever heard of such things in stories, excited nighttime ventures spoken around fires. She clung to those with a child's hope and learned to let them go one heartbreak at a time. There's no gallant warrior, no honorable king or vanquished evil. She's only ever known tired old men, greedy rulers, and a persistent terror gripping the tortured trunk of Yggdrasil.

She joined the Vorðnir in a time of war. It is all she has ever known. Vígdís was raised by their strict routine and careful discipline. She became a skilled fighter, learned to hunt and kill for more than just food, and survived some of the worst conflicts her order had to offer. It might be inaccurate to say such things strengthened her, as a child would need much more than tough skin to survive such a world. She's spent many a night too drunk and too remiss as a result after all, but she's had good company to carry her through it.

Vígdís aches to see the world through a child's eyes again, bright and wonderful, unplagued by tyrants and monsters alike. She wants those tales she so loved as a child to ring true, to carry the next generation into a better life than hers. Vígdís fears that her home here and brothers-in-arms may not be enough to ensure such a future, but she has worked hard as Hofðingi to do what she can.

She is unafraid to make sacrifices for the betterment of the nine realms. Though she tries to be fair, it is not always easy. Her past is jaded and though some may not entirely agree with her methods, they cannot deny their effectiveness.

Brynjarr

A large gray, fire-breathing wyvern best known for his brutish size and looming presence. He found Vígdís in the wilderness, small enough to be held in her arms. He grew fast and he grew strong. Brynjarr has thick, armored skin and a wingspan which could topple trees in one stroke. He has a curved beak and a horned tail, two spiked thumbs on either wing. He has seen enough conflict to last him a lifetime. It's evident in the scarring and holes in the membrane of either wing.

Brynjarr is reserved and reclusive, most alive in the presence of his rider and withdrawn when not. He enjoys a good hunt and longs to burrow someplace deep into the ground. He wants to sleep for many years. Brynjarr is battle-hardened and weary, the first to defend his home but the last to cause unnecessary strife. He has a low and rumbling voice, the sound of distant thunder. It's best put to use telling stories to hatchlings and aspiring, young riders.

He loves Vígdís with every fiber of his being but does not always agree with her ways of ruling the Vorðnir. She can be very critical of her army and ruthless to her enemies. He counsels her when he can, offering her alternative ways to keeping peace after Ragnarök.

06.

miscellaneous

Habits

Vígdís is in a near constant state of motion, feet shifting and green eyes darting. She busies her hands with small tasks, jolts her leg and never sits still for too long. There's always another project and more work to do. She talks even when no one's listening, talks to fill space. It doesn't even have to make sense. The only time she settles is when she's sleeping and that is completely unintentional. She's up days at a time and crashes suddenly, not often in a bed either.

She carries parchment with her wherever she goes, jotting down inspiration and advice, a few small lines of prose she's every intention of turning into a poem and never does. If you look through the pages, it can be hard reading, her handwriting apparently only legible to herself. You'll see a drawing or two, the bend in a river to mark her way or a portrait she found striking. She keeps a quill and a small capsule of ink in her saddle bag and writes most often by firelight.

Skills

Though Vígdís mostly fights with lances when riding Brynjarr, she is also a talented swordsman. She is especially strategic during wartime, choosing her actions carefully before committing. In combat, her and Brynjarr are one and the same. They established a close connection very young and learned to communicate with more than just words. The others joke, but seeing the two in action is enough to convince a person they can actually read each others minds.

She's learned how to maneuver about Brynjarr even in flight, giving her the advantage of different angles to throw her lances. Vígdís is incredibly agile and surefooted. No stranger to heights, she's even willing to launch herself off Brynjarr's back for an attack.

Fears

Fear keeps you living; it keeps you moving. Vígdís seeks companionship not because she adores the attention, she fears being alone. She spent years removed and distant. She knows how she is on her own and hates the way it makes her feel, how bad the tedium becomes. People give her purpose in life, a belonging she wouldn't have otherwise.

Vígdís also fears inaction, an idle mind left to wander and muse about things better left alone. Confined spaces bother her a great deal, and she does not take kindly to being held back or restrained. She fears sickness and large crowds of people, how suffocating that can be.

Names Meaning

Vígdís is derived from the Old Norse elements víg "war" and dís "goddess". She is a goddess of war. Her surname Dalgaard comes from the valley she was born in. Brynjarr also has its own meaning. It is derived from the elements bryn "armor" and arr "warrior". He is an armored warrior, her protector in combat.
