Some disclaimers before creating characters...
- This roleplay is intended to follow the experience of playing Dragon Age 2 with original characters. Our expectation that there will be divergent differences in the plot, as original characters won't behave exactly like the canon characters, but that the party composition otherwise follow similar themes to the canonical party. As such, please choose a role for your character based on the canonical cast and follow any notes on that role listed below. This will ensure the larger story beats track while giving room for making the story your own.

Varric's role is significantly important to the story, especially in Act 1 and providing a path to Bartrand. This character should not only be friendly with the Hawke family but be prepared to use (and thus have) connections in helping the Hawkes to find jobs.

Another key character role, they need to have the traits below but also an ability to tolerate a difference of opinion in other original characters. It's very easy for a character like Anders to be nothing more than a fanatic. While fanatacism is encouraged, they also need to be able to cooperate with others and ideally be willing to work with each other.

With a penchant for wit, and a tongue as sharp as silverite, Amelie was always burdened with responsibility as the eldest of her two siblings, younger beyond her years, she often expressed trouble dealing with the respected, well-behaved mannerisms her mother tried to instill upon her. Instead, she enjoyed tormenting her brother and sister with childish pranks and playing in the mud with wooden sticks more than representing the family as the esteemed eldest daughter, she desired to be allowed her childhood, like her siblings. Her status as a mage led to more being expected of her, which--combined with the constant Templar threat--only worsened Amelie's joyous spirit.

However, prideful and confident, she still retained her carefree ways despite her mother. Yet the pressure of expectation caused Amelie to lean entirely on her wit, being overly clever or sarcastic. It wasn't until the Fifth Blight broke out she was forced--very prematurely--to grow up. Thrust into leadership, Amelie took charge and put her natural inclinations aside in-favor of a more forced pragmatic approach. Though she was always a kind and generous girl who strived to be good and true, the circumstances of the Blight hollowed her character into something more ruthless. Yet Amelie couldn't see the change in herself, and now retains the self-belief that she is always doing what's right, leading to a moral-superiority complex.

During the early years of Nello's and Gwyn's childhood, when they were but little beasts causing havoc, Amelie, much to her dismay, was forcibly enlisted by Leandra to help in the raising of her siblings. Still a child in her own right, she would protest constantly to be let out of the Drake's lair that was their home. Some days she wanted to train, others to play with the other village children, maybe even a visit to the Chantry. Yet her requests rarely bore fruit, and she'd waste her days playing babysitter to her siblings. Although there was no denying that their mother needed the help, Amelie couldn't help the feeling that she was robbed the innocence of being a child. A notion that would only strengthen throughout the years.

As the years toiled away, Amelie's newfound age--at 14 years old--allowed her a certain degree of freedom over her younger fledglings, a freedom she fought her mother for at every turn. Though she loved them with every being of her soul, sometimes the responsibility and pressure of being a caretaker for both mother and siblings was draining. During such times of uncertain stress, Amelie sought comfort in the thick pages of various books and scrolls, either pouring over her father's old grimoire; or bleeding the Chantry of its words. Amelie had always known of her affinity for magic, it was an unmistakable sensation--like the presence of eyes or movement of a wrist--that she'd always possessed. But magic was dangerous, as were Templars. A fact Leandra would bleat at her repeatedly, a bleat she would pass onto her brother, Nello.

Practicing magic was a dangerous act, one which held more risks than mere discovery or the shattering of the occasional bookcase. No, links to the fade were often cruel and uncertain, a place where dark thinks in the form of spirits under guise congregated for entrance into the waking world. Amelie was wise enough to avoid overstepping her magical boundaries, always training on a step-by-step basis. When she wasn't training in the use of spellslinging, she honed her ability with a stick. Training for future use with a staff in combat.

At 16, Nello and Gwyn were well on the way growing into adults in their own right. Freeing both Leandra and Amelie of a great deal of stress, allowing her more free-time; she spent her teenage years trying to help those around the village, whether it be farming crops, sorting scriptures or cooking, latest of which was a family boon; a boon Leandra was grateful for. Soon enough, Amelie's reputation as a hard-worker and village helper spread like wildfire, and there were no shortage of prospective job offers, most of which she refused in-favor of choosing her own schedule. Though a steady income looked promising in theory, the tips she earned were enough for a decent--if not extraordinary--living.

Of course, all good things must come to an end, and come to an end they did in the form of the dreaded Fifth Blight. A mass surge in Darkspawn, headed by an Archdemon, able to decisively destroy the King and his forces alongside the Grey Wardens during the infamous Battle for Ostagar. With the King dead, and the Darkspawn Horde moving North, Amelie took it upon herself to take charge. Leading the Hawke family to the only place which was safe from the growing darkness and a home was provided. Kirkwall, home of the Templars. Where their Uncle Gamlen resided with the family fortune.

The road to Kirkwall was long and arduous, with the group facing no lack of hardships. Nello's magic affinity, though invaluable, was beaten only by the surprising progress in Skill-At-Arms Gwyndolyn showed. It was all a little strange, to see her sweet, angel-fingered sister using those gifted hands for bloody destruction over musical creation. But it was a strangeness Amelie was grateful for, without their combined prowess, they may never have reached Kirkwall. But reach it they did. After bargaining with a Witch, and even then the entrance was only secure through the path of indentured servitude.

As Gamlen, the useless sod, had carelessly gambled the family fortune away. With no affinity for the art of stealth, Amelie enlisted her and her siblings in the service of a mercenary, where they were often required to do things of questionable morality. There was no denying it, the loss of Lothering, the journey to Kirkwall, and the enlistment in the Red Irons had left a negative effect on her psyche, something cold and ruthless which swam distantly within her eyes.

Personality: Rather free spirited as long as Templars aren't around, A optimist with a Superstitious side effect. (Often believes everything good or bad happens in atleast three, it's a dominoes falling theory he always had) he tries desperately to avoid becoming uptight and ruled by fear of Templars, thus he aims for loose and cool but controlled in his everyday life while wanting things to just go right for a change. Despite his mind often telling him to keep a eye out for that other boot to drop and keep a look over his shoulder. A caring young man however, likes to have fun and keep his family from trouble on his behalf or at all really. He never asked for his gift but he surely would never trade it for anything. Though he wouldn't want his family in harms or troubles way either. Nello does everything he can to not be a burden on his family, even spins a number of cover stories in his head and uses them when he's needed, has one for almost every possible situation... almost. He just wants a good life for him and his loved ones and doesn't wish his gift to cost them dearly for some mistake or unfortunate occurrence to catch up with him and bite him.

Some could say he's a young, innocent man with a loving nature. He's likes his fun but cares too much to let it control him, he also has moments of true obliviousness to some hints and to what some things are or really mean. Leading to some learning moments in certain situations.

Nello Bartavious Clayborne Hawke born to Malcolm Hawke and Leandra Hawke nee' Amell in 9:10 Dragons age just shortly after his twin sister Gwyndolyn often called Gwyn for short. Nello grew up in a town called Lothering where trade was at the forefront of fereldan culture with the Kings highway passing through from one side of fereldan to the other with traders from all walks of life passing through at some point along their journey in the humble town, it's seen war and rebels, bandits and wolves while farmers and Templar were commonplace in the village. A gentle reminder for all mages that no matter what you could always count on the chantry to within earshot in some form, whether it was wearing metal plate or a dedicated farmer worried about his crops visiting the chantry and sometimes gossiping about town. Though as Nello grew up raised by his parents and giving his sisters a hard time whenever he could, Nell learned that not all were so bad, though he wouldn't be caught too long around a Templar if he could help it. Stay overly so and before long you know how it will end.

Despite his at times brotherly acts of keeping his sisters updated with the latest teases and games during his early years and liking the attention he seemed to get from the girls around the village as he got older, Nello was rather easy going. Always trying to remain positive and take his fathers advice and training seriously, while working to overcome his childhood aged problem of hating when his food touches, often being put off of food until a new plate was given or being fooled into believing his food was replaced with a fresh plate and without the food touching, while really it was his mother taking his plate and making it look like so. Which used to and once in awhile still does play a role in his superstitious beliefs, thinking that his food touching the night before was a sign of bad things to come the day after..... Might be best not to get into all of that, could take awhile. But rest assured it's taken a lot to overcome his food touching issues and superstitions related to it.

In reality of all his quirks and optimistic outlooks, free spirited and yes... Always looking for that last boot to drop while he keeps looking over his shoulder and not all too comfortable until it finally does, Nello merely tries to live his life to the fullest he can without becoming a burden to his family. Sometimes it seemed Gwyn disliked the attention he got from the girls around town gave by asking her about her twin brother, the older he got the more he understood why and while he couldn't help it much he least began to understand it. Kinda. Then was his relationship with Amelie, the eldest and often referee to her siblings. She too was a mage and seemed to pick up on things quicker then he did, it amazed him at times, he could put himself into constant study and never pick up new spells and training methods as quick.

Then again there always was a small trait of his called "Oblivious moments by Nello" routine. Some of the girls he hung out with had to explain things to him whenever he missed a hint or overlooked a touch, won't even go into the more advanced talk and lingo he was unaware of and still is with some topics related to it all.

When the fifth blight hit.... Well it wasn't easy for anyone of the hawkes. The head of the family and patriarch died not long before and the hawkes were left to five plus the old family mabari warhound. Nello wasn't able to join the kings army and do his part in ensuring the darkspawn never reached Lothering, nor his beloved family. If he did his magical talents would be revealed and everything his family had done over the years would be for not. He felt like a useless sod sometimes, he wasn't trained with a sword or much good with a shield and bare hands weren't enough against thy enemy that be darkspawn.

When the Kings army was overrun and the last stand of good king Cailin not enough. Lothering was hit, forced to run and flee were they that be Hawke, that a old legend of myth and tales struck a deal and played passage on way toward Kirkwall. Mother was sure that would be best..... Amelie seemed to agree and why there was no counter argument worth a sovereign of good use in countering the Templar infested city, Nello reluctantly nodded and followed. He was going to miss Lothering...... he was going to miss his beloved home of fereldan where pride and courage met with strength and durability to form his history filled nation of mabari and legends.

When they finally arrived to Kirkwall the third in a list of bad things occurred, another snag discovered. Apparently they were to be sold into indentured servitude to some mercenary company or smugglers.... They went with mercenaries thus came the Red irons.... Oh boy isn't that grand?! Damned Uncle gamlen and his sodded lost fortune and family estate. They came to Kirkwall for a fresh start and avoiding the blight, now they must start with repaying a debt where they hardly a say! Nello found it hard to find positives in that to be life.

It was going to be hard enough adjusting to even more Templars then Lothering ever had, now he had debts to help pay off. Least his family was safe though....... That was most important to him. It didn't take long for his sister, Gwyn to find a role and make good for herself, she became a Templar of all things. Rather shocked at first, kinda worried too.... Did they perform checks for new recruits and checking family history or something like that? Might lead to trouble, no? But after awhile he accepted it. She seemed to have found a role where it was her and her alone standing out without siblings taking that away and garnering the attention. Plus hey, maybe Nellos age old question could be answered concerning Templars.

Amelie wasted no time in making a name for herself with the red irons and garnering some attention for herself. But Nello you might ask? Well..... It was a bit tougher for him, he went from knowing every Templar back home to being overwhelmed by them in Kirkwall. The horror stories and corruption were eerie tales to hear, slavers were sneaking about Darktown and he didn't quite have a place here. He got into some fights with suspected slavers not far from the cities underbelly, bit his tongue around guards and Templars trying to go unnoticed and keep his family burden free and out of trouble. It was rather hard to hide his magic here, slavers drove him mad and he couldn't use magic to fight them, while fists only did so much. No.... Life was a diffuclt adjustment for him in Kirkwall but he was trying to make the best of it.

When he wasn't in lowtown and near darktown in wandering fashion. Nello tried his luck in hightown growing rather curious into what this blooming rose was all about, Templars seemed to frequent the place and so did uncle Gamlen? He thought of going inside and seeing for himself but felt a little foolish and thought too many Templars were about, so he often just walked about the area and waited for a clue, plenty of noises came out of there, sounded like........ Then it finally struck him, it was a brothel like the one in Denerim. Since his red iron days ended this was basically how his day to day went since arriving in Kirkwall. Not yet able to find his place in the city nor feel comfortable enough to fully be himself for fear of Templars plagued his mind, there were far more here in one city then Lothering ever had or even came close to having.

Least he still got some attention from girls, that was one thing that didn't really change.

Personality: At first sights she might seem more at home with nobility than in the seedy underground. She has an elegant refined manner, seemingly always calm and cheerful letting little bother her if anything at all. She can be humorous with an acerbic and sarcastic sense of humour, and flirty with members of both genders. She is generous and protective of those she cares about and though she doesn't look it can be ruthless and unafraid to fight dirty if something threatens her or her friends, with a quick tongue and cleverness.

Origin: Born into the Carta and was made to work for them ad soon as she was old enough to walk, passing messages at first and that later graduating to enforcement and smuggling. Despite being the only life she knew, she was dissatisfied by it and dislike the treatment each member gave each other and the constant backstabbing. She looked for a way out making plans to ran away and steal some Carta money in the process however she needed help.

Help came when she made contact with a young up and coming member of the drwaven merchant guild, Bertrand Tethras. Despite a frosty start the two become close and he helped her escape the Carta for part of the money she would steal from them. He directed her to Kirkwall were she settled down and made roots, she found old habits die hard as she quickly became involved in the seedy side of the city. She set up a few brothels and funded a few others as well as bars, she became known for treating her workers well, generously and with respect while treating other gangs that tried to mess with her businesses ruthlessly. At around this time she got into writing and found to be a talented story teller which gave her a respectable cover for her seedier dealings. Her books sold well and combines with her brothels made her a wealthy and Influential woman and she was generous with it, helping the town that treated her so well.

However despite a happy few years , her relationship with Betrand soured as he was more interested in his work and money making to give her much thought and was increasingly unpleasant to her. She broke up with him but, retaining a soft spot for him, kept in contact much to his chagrin helped him with his ventures with money and men. When Betrands snd hers newest venture, an expedition to the deep roads, was lacking funds and manpower she went looking for suitable candidates. It was than she heard about a mercenary named Hawke slowly gaining in renown.

Personality: Christoph is a light-hearted lad. He doesn't mock everything he comes across or anything, but he strongly believes that laughter is the best medicine, and will try to cheer himself and others up with jokes wherever they're not inappropriate. Technically there's an 'if he can think of one' clause there too, but Chrisoph has a lively imagination from which ideas both good and bad frequently spring, so this is no issue. He can most often be found in a jovial mood with the smile of a mirthful giant and a laugh like rolling thunder. Yeah, those phrases are a bit stereotypical, bite me, they're true. Christoph is loyal to his friends and kind to all, which wins him many a good opinion. That doesn't stop him from killing people that need killing, but he dislikes dragging it out and never takes joy in ending a life, no matter how depraved victim is. He merely regrets that things had come this far. This is reflected in his tactics, where his focus is always solidly on protecting his allies rather than slaying his foes.

He is also somewhat more religious than the average sellsword. He's no zealot, but he prays regularly and buys into traditional Nevarran beliefs about death. This, plus his honest face and relatively straightforward nature, means few expect Christoph to be one of the first people to start looting whenever he gets a chance. He tries to have discretion in who he steals from—either those who didn't earn it or those who won't miss it—but he's still one to enjoy a good paycheck, from an employer or otherwise. He definitely won't steal from a friend, of course, though he may be a bit unconcerned about property rights. He'll often sit in a chair without asking for politeness' sake, for instance. Though Christoph is generally a fairly sensible man, he can be careless about details, which sometimes leads even his best-laid plans astray when he forgets a small but important part of it. And they do tend to be good plans. He has a sharp, creative, inquisitive mind, albeit one that tends to focus strongly on the negative.

Origin: Christoph was born a Nevarran noble, raised in the lap of luxury in Cumberland. He was intended to be another fine player of political games, just like his elder siblings, but Christoph had far less interest in lessons on etiquette and more in the comings and goings of foreigners. He particularly enjoyed slipping out of the noble districts and speaking with an elderly Cleric named Aguilona, who hailed from Rivain. It was she who, unknowing of his noble status, encouraged his curiosity about Thedas and answered his questions on anything he could think to ask. It was also she who taught him much of the Andrastian religion. Over time he would stop ranging semi-randomly on his 'outings' and instead beeline straight for her chantry. After a near-miss on being mugged, Christoph asked one of his friends in the estate's guard to discretely teach him how to defend himself.

From early in his life, he was groomed to be the husband of one of the Duke of Cumberland's daughters, Mija Anaxas. They often spent time with each other and became good friends. Christoph confided in her his desire to see and know the world. Fortunately for this plan, Christoph's family was one of the more influential houses in the region, so Duke Sandral assented. Further, Mija was taken with Christoph. Unfortunately for the plan, Christoph had no intention of allowing this. Not because he abhorred Mija, he just had other things he wanted to do, like explore Thedas. When the topic was broached to him in his late teens, he was forced to make his departure much earlier than he'd intended. He wasn't an idiot, he could see Mija's feelings. And he presumed it'd hurt for her if he left after it was brought up that she was to marry him, let alone after they were actually wed. So he figured he'd just have to leave as soon as possible. After a few days' preparation, he did just that.

Christoph quickly learned the value of money outside of his wealthy noble cradle. He brought guilders with him, but not nearly enough to sustain himself indefinitely. So he signed on with a traveling mercenary company, the Fishermen. He bluntly refused to give a name or background for himself, fearing that his status as a noble may cause derision or exclusion. The recruiter, an Orlesian, called him prickly, then Quillback, then everyone called him Quillback. This was frequently shortened to Quill. He traveled with the Fishermen for near a decade and was well looked after.

His fortunes changed when the company was contracted to procure the Tome of Koslun from the Orlesians and bring it to Ventus. Thieves from their ranks stole the book from Val Chevin and brought it out to a picked team, including Quill. They would then move to Cumberland, where a ship would be waiting for the Tome to sail it all the way around to Ventus while the Fishermen went to ground. It was in Cumberland that this went wrong. A certain woman named Eale Duredan turned on them and ambushed the group with some similarly greedy conspirators, leaving only Quill alive after Eale left with the Tome. Quill interrogated one of the conspirators and forced Eale's plan out of him. She would hand over a fake Tome to the crew while she would go over land to Kirkwall, where a smuggler friend of hers would help her get it safely to Ventus, resulting in the exorbitant pay being split between just her and the conspirators rather than the entire company.

It was clear that his first move should be to board the ship before it departed, reveal the fake, and use the faster ship to get to Kirkwall first. Or, as his staggering gait and dizzy vision retorted, he should make sure he didn't bleed out first. He turned up on Aguilona's doorstep and she took him inside the Chantry to tend to his wounds with long, bony fingers. There she revealed that she had put two and two together. A blond boy extraordinarily large for his age leaving at the same time as the blond, extraordinarily large for his age noble son of Luka Neurath went missing. Far from reprimanding him, she expressed approval of his choice, stating that he chose a rewarding road when it would have been trivial to choose the easy one. Nonetheless, his family missed him, though some for less sentimental reasons than others. His marriage to Mija was to be a crowning jewel in Neurath power. Speaking of, Mija had apparently disappeared a year ago, after expressing interest in journeying across Thedas to win renown. Quill hoped she was okay, and really hoped it was what it appeared to be on the surface.

Quill left over Aguilona's insistence that he should recover, saying that he could recover on the boat trip. He should've been so lucky. Instead the Qunari had tracked the thieves and came after them on their ships. The plan was unchanged; dock in Kirkwall, go to ground, wait for Eale. The Qunari surely wouldn't dare force entry into Kirkwall to pursue, and even if they did, they had no chance of finding them in the den of Lowtown. A storm forced the issue. Quill, still weakened by his relatively fresh injuries, was lucky to survive. Only one other survived, an old salt named Symoney.

Quill hired a petty criminal known as Lucky to find Eale's smuggler contact. He failed, yet demanded his full pay regardless. Quill... gently rebuked him. Hawke and her posse approached him immediately afterwards for a reason he figured had something to do with his enormity and the fact that he'd choked a man unconscious with a single arm. He decided that they looked decidedly more competent, or at least significantly better-looking, so he'd give them a job instead. As it turned out, the Qunari weren't the only ones who'd been watching him. The whoever it was that'd given the Fishermen the job had sent an agent along to 'speed up' whatever was going on. And this guy just wouldn't believe Quill that he didn't have the Tome, so instead he applied pressure on Quill to find the Tome that wasn't even in Kirkwall yet.

Of course, as it turned out, he did believe that because he knew, and he was just trying to draw Quill into an ambush to kill him to make sure he didn't interfere with Eale and somehow lose the Tome. Enter the Hawke Patrol, who helped Quill kill him right back, and figure out that he was being sided against to boot. Not just that, but he had the location of the smuggler. Quill brought the Hawkes in again to help him kill that guy. When Eale arrived, she found her contact dead. Now he had time to get at her next as she figured out what to do from here. Both of them knew she couldn't just trek across Thedas to hand it in.

In the absence of having anyone other than Symoney on his sober days to trust, Quill threw his lot in with the Hawkes. Surely they would lead a stable, uncomplicated life.
