History of the WIF

Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.
Mahatma Gandhi

Before the last great war, commonly called the Tretin War, the three superpowers of the world, U.S.A, China, and Australia, delved into the intense research of a newfound and mysterious element known as Tretinium formed in the planet’s core in the year 2353 B.C. The material boasted entirely strange and unheard of qualities, the most prominent of which was an intense reaction to water and heavy water. The reaction released large amounts of energy that far exceeded the capacity of the most current and advanced generators in production, and allowed the rapid advancement of many new types of technology. Another characteristic of the reaction was the production of a bizarre form of radiation that matched the wavelengths of many different signals in the human brain. Because of this, the element rapidly revolutionized modern computing, and allowed humans to directly interface with appropriately designed Tretinium-based electronics.

With these major discoveries, it didn’t take long for the eyes of war to embrace the new element, and the advancement of military technology surged forth into a new era. Each leading country now had motive to invade their neighbors, seeking the rich veins of Tretinium deep beneath the Earth’s surface. In the year of 2361, the Tretin War sparked with the invasion of China by Australia, who’d already burned through the limited stock of “Tretin” that they had available to produce a great armada of flying ships and mechanically interfaced soldiers. Within weeks, the two nations had already endured thousands of casualties, the conflict attracting the attention of the many nations around the world. One particular nation, the United States, saw great opportunity to take advantage of the favorable situation, already heavy into development of a superior fighting force. Behind the scenes, the U.S.A. was researching the use of Tretin in large scale weapons and bombs, and in the process discovered its third and most powerful property.

The energy produced by Tretin was found to exponentially enhance the reactions of seemingly every element and compound currently known. In a bid to take control of the entire war, the U.S. made a gamble to attack both other superpowers using its newly designed superweapon, and unleashed it. The result was devastating. The bomb used, known as the TA-10, used a Tretin enhanced fission reaction of the Hydrogen molecule, and when the U.S. launched it on both opposing nations, the destruction was mortifying. Upon detonation, the entire continent of Australia was instantaneously vaporized, leaving nothing but a massive crater in the ocean, which eventually filled with water. Similarly, the second bomb targeting China wiped over half of the massive nation off the face of the Earth.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2016_02/329790.jpg.01331277dd747653ddf9fb78be852622.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="103710" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2016_02/329790.jpg.01331277dd747653ddf9fb78be852622.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

Detonation circumference of the TA-10.

Unbeknownst to the U.S., the two opposing nations had also been producing superweapons of their own in secret, and in retaliation to the bombs launched by America, countered them. Overnight, in a horrid affair of Mutually Assured Destruction, the entire eastern half of the United States was demolished, leaving the government in tatters. With the attempt of the U.S. to end the war in a single attack having failed, now all three countries were completely out of commission, with populations fleeing desperately from the ensuing radiation.

As if by miracle, a single organization named NLEx rose up to the occasion and formed a new, albeit smaller nation from the remnants of the United States. Known as the Western Industrial Federation, the leaders of the nation promised peace and an egalitarian society in which there would be no war and crime, and served as an oasis to the fleeing immigrants from the former 50 states. Comprised of the former states of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and California, the WIF quickly formed a powerhouse economy and housed over 200 million citizens who comprised its backbone. While the economy itself became based around Tretinium, all technological development was focused around bettering the lives of its citizens and their security. True to its word, the WIF did not lend itself to war, and instead formed a military based on the principal of defending the new nation’s borders and protecting its people.

Suburban landscape of the WIF capital, Four Corners City

The WIF intricately based its socialist economy on the trade and ownership of Tretin, avoiding the mistakes and disadvantages a capitalist government could bring to society, and surprisingly flourished. Because of the abundance of the element, jobs were plentiful, and the unemployment and homeless rates stayed solidly at zero percent. Instead of earning money through work, citizens were offered opportunity and access to better resources as a reward, with value of a household proportional to the amount of Tretinium-based appliances and products owned by a family. The more quality work one performed, the more Tretin could be obtained, therefore more opportunities to move up in society, and a chance to go into a better career. Because of the equality and limitless opportunity, the population thrived and grew, showing the world that a war based economy was unnecessary.

At the end of the 24th century, however, the economy hit a peak, and opportunities for work began to nosedive. Less fortunate citizens resorted to stealing appliances containing Tretin to increase chances of moving up in society, causing many criminal organizations to spring up. Law enforcement agencies, known as Public Defense Forces, grew intensely corrupt, using their authority to blackmail families and businesses and pilfer their Tretin resources. It was at this time that NLEx, the organization that originally founded the WIF and produced its Tretinium resources, while also organizing and operated its military, stepped in to remedy the growing crime. They ran investigations and operations using covert teams of highly trained operatives in order to sniff out sources of corruption in the government and economy, in addition to generating tens of millions of jobs in a variety of fields for the nation’s citizens.

Public Defense Force (PDF) patrolling the slums of Four Corners City

Despite the new breakthroughs by NLEx, a new and major problem emerged concerning the element Tretin. Many of the population began to develop strange symptoms after having been long exposed to the element, particularly a variety of unusual abilities and powers. The people who were affected showed telepathic and telekinetic symptoms, being able to manipulate objects and the minds of other people with no such abilities. The problem however, lied with the fact that the symptoms grew more severe over time and with no treatment. In a bid to removed these “Psionics” away from the general population, NLEx led a controversial campaign to retrieve, detain, and rehabilitate them, keeping them housed in massive facilities. While the Psionics were kept in good living conditions and allowed to speak with their loved ones, their families were still outraged that NLEx stole them away from society against their will.

<p><a href="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2016_02/5448cf4ad934f48759fd66cddfc1cd4e.jpg.67c880636a093682949744fc003803d0.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="103709" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2016_02/5448cf4ad934f48759fd66cddfc1cd4e.jpg.67c880636a093682949744fc003803d0.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""></a></p>

The Slums, home to violent criminal organizations that amass and trade in Tretinium

Despite this hit to their formerly positive reputation, the corporation made good on the promise to rehabilitate the Psionics and to compensate the families, set them into new work programs that allowed them to used their abilities and provide for their loved ones. Unfortunately the economy did not manage to improve, as the sources of corruption in the government and law enforcement evaded NLEx’s inquiries, which soon produced an internal struggle between the founding company, and the nation itself.

The Factions of Four Corners

Four Corners City Public Defense Force (PDF)

Dedicated to the enforcement of local laws and protection of the peace, the PDF is maintained by the Central Administration Bureau and operates out of eight district branches dotting the city landscape. They have access to rather large peacekeeping resources such as weapons and armor, and while their technology is outclassed by that of NLEx, they have greater manpower and influence, in addition to the legal protection granted by the CAB. The PDF headquarters is located in the central portion of Four Corners, surrounded by the lush green artificial landscapes of the business and tourism disctrict. While not all branches are involved, the PDF is infamous for its corruption and how it extorts local businesses for extra protection against The Grid, a large network of criminal organizations built into FCC society.

The Central Administration Bureau (CAB)

Initially formed by leaders of NLEx during the rise of the WIF, the Central Administration Bureau is the panel government based out of Four Corners, and has a hand in nearly every agency in the nation. Similar to the House of Representatives of the late U.S.A., the CAB is formed by ambassadors and business leaders of the many cities in the WIF and networks to the individual city governments. There is no individual power such as a President to represent the people of the entire nation, so all passed and enforced laws are decided upon by vote of the Administration panel. In order to balance the power of the Ambassadors, each one is set in authority of their own district and PDF branch in Four Corners, allowing them to police each other while they maintain the city.

New Life Explorations (NLEx)

Founded shortly before the Tretin War, NLEx was well known as a forerunner of Tretinium research and the development of human interface technology that utilized the element. Eventually the company, led by CEO Bix Donovan and his siblings, expanded into a great variety of departments and agencies, soon encapsulating the world as the forerunner in modern technology. Interestingly enough, despite the focus on technological development, NLEx had no apparent hand in the production of the bombs used in the destruction of the United States, China, and Australia, although it is believed by many opponents and skeptics that they manipulated the tense situation behind the scenes. In the present day, NLEx operates out of a great number of facilities in the Western Industrial Federation, providing a variety of jobs, goods, and services to the economy, as well as funding and operating the current military. Behind the scenes, they also control an elite force of operatives known as the Pride, which is dedicated to investigating and eradicating the corruption present in Four Corners City.

The Grid

This massive underground network was formed in an attempt to unify the many groups in the WIF harboring anti-government sentiment, and now function as an organization cloaked behind the inner workings of the nation’s infrastructure and citizenry. Appealing to the less fortunate masses, they promote the image of trying to rebuild the nation from the ground up, with many of The Grid’s backers believing that to topple the head government you must first eliminate its foundation, NLEx in this case. Borrowing power from the people and various criminal associations in Four Corners, the Grid operates its own Tretin trafficking and generates its own armaments to fight against the current powers that be.

Tretinium and HIT

Discovered in a “core” mining operation based out of northern Arizona, Tretinium is a unique element that takes the form of a glowing aquamarine gel when exposed to the moisture in the air. It didn’t take long for the unique material to take the world by storm, after it was revealed to have a variety of bizarre and “beneficial” properties. Nicknamed “The Seed of God” or simply “Tretin” by non-pious types, Tretinium produces its own special radiation, the intensity of which increases exponentially when combined in solution with water. The radiation itself held many uses, the most prominent of which was the capability to unlock previously dormant areas of brain activity in humans by matching the wavelengths of electronic signals in the nervous system. This, in turn, granted such capabilities as allowing users to interface with electrical computer systems directly, essentially making them an extension of the human mind.

This new and powerful development, known prominently as Human Interface Technology, or HIT swept the world, advancing the world into a new age rife with robotics, cybernetics, and of course, weaponry. Tretinium soon became engrained into every aspect of society, with new uses for the HIT system being released nearly every day.

There are four predominant HIT systems developed by NLEx and used in the WIF:

CAST (Computerized Assistance Terminal)

The CAST is derivative of personal computers, and comes in a variety of forms, ranging form headsets to internal cybernetics. The use of Tretin’s radiation coupled with the advancement of modern computing allows users to directly uplink their thoughts, emotions, and memories into their CAST and subsequently into any online network available. The uses for the CAST are practically endless, and it is a very common item in use by the citizens and businesses in the WIF.

The Husk System

When NLEx first began its research into Tretinium, its focus was predominantly on the applications in medicine and how the new element could be used to treat disease, disorders, and other medical conditions. Sadly, research for the first two options didn’t work out, however with Tretin’s ability to interface the human mind with electronics, NLEx came up with an idea. By incorporating the idea of an exoskeleton that could assist the crippled with movement and motor function into HIT, the company created special devices that attached to limbs and joints on the body and interfaced with the associated neurons in the brain that controlled their movement via a CAST variation. The result of the new product was overwhelmingly positive and successful, with even quadriplegic patients regaining full use of their bodies. The success was so great that the company eventually approved Persona for use in its military, as a means to enhance the natural combat movements of the human body with incredible mechanical precision and speed.

Persona

A particularly groundbreaking development by NLEx in the field of artificial intelligence, Persona was originally designed as a therapeutic buddy system that generated a computerized “partner” for trauma victims by uploading their mental framework and using that information to automatically generate an AI to relate to the patient. The Persona program met a resounding success, finally achieving what many believe to be true AI due to its ability to mimic the structure of human thought and emotion. In even further, more private studies, NLEx coupled Personas into the already popular Husk exoskeletons. This turned the Husk into an even greater combat tool, essentially being supported by two minds that could act in concert or independently in a firefight to save the life of the user. This capability is heavily restricted to NLEx’s private fighting force, The Pride, making them truly a force to be reckoned with.

N-Tech

While N-Tech is technically a branch of NLEx that prides itself in the development of common consumer goods and appliances, it also refers to a series of tools created by that same division. The N-Tech tools are essentially computerized gauntlets that can be retrofitted with a variety of equipment and can run custom programs to suit the user. In addition, it can be upgraded to run parallel to any other NLEx generated product, such as a Husk or CAST. N-Tech gauntlets or bracelets have been popularly altered by both NLEx personnel and organizations belonging to The Grid to function as “smart weapons” that can help with tracking opponents and generating combat routines for use with Husks.

Character Archetypes

For Dead Oasis, players may have their characters choose from a large variety of jobs and positions. That being said, there will be a list of different occupations and classes that I will display in the overview section of the roleplay that players may choose from, or add their own if they don’t see a job that would fit their character. I’ll provide some examples below.

Soldier

The Soldier archetype includes any class that works on the front lines of each faction, either participating in direct combat with soldiers from other factions or guarding certain areas from attacks or infiltration. They generally work in unison with other members of their unit, formulating strategies before combat and use advanced weaponry and defenses to meet their objectives. Ultimately a soldier must be willing to work with others and obey commands, while still being able to make critical independent decisions that accomplish their objectives regardless of where and how they fight on the field.

Saboteur

The opposite of a Soldier, the Saboteur archetype includes classes that avoid direct combat while attempting to use their wits and skills to interfere with enemy capabilities from behind the scenes. From scouting and espionage to infiltration and hacking, Saboteurs are solitary operatives with the goal of winning a battle before it even begins and before an enemy even knows they’ve lost. They generally are given one objective and may use any means accomplish it within their skillsets.

Strategist

Even further away from direct combat, Strategist usually serve as the brains of any given operation, manipulating them like a game of chess. Their goal is to command and give active support to the front lines or to operatives functioning behind enemy lines. Strategists generally include Commanders or some other form of leadership, and are often involved in multiple cooperative operations.

Politician

Warriors of pen and tongue, Politicians are the voices of factions, and work to win over other factions using speeches and propaganda. Consisting of corporate leaders, city leadership, and other outspoken individuals, Politicians are often found in the limelight of society with their names being well known and influential. This also makes them very valuable targets to their enemies, making their work very risky. It is the duty of Politicians to be the face of their factions and address their supporters to maintain those relationships.

Supporters

Probably the most important component to any successful organization are the people who supply it. These are your merchants, manufacturers, and every day laborers that keep the organization functioning with a daily influx of products. Supporters are usually the least directly involved with the armed conflicts between the factions, yet are also the most important, as they provide the materials for the weapons and rations soldiers need to fight each battle.

Civilians

This archetype contains any neutral characters that do not choose to involve themselves with the major factions, and live every day accomplishing their own independent goals. Despite this lack of involvement, however, Civilians are probably the most powerful influence because they form the backbone of the entire nation as a whole. They form bonds with other Civilians and families and generate their own information networks regarding current events and situations in the city. Civilian support is vital for politicians, and can make or break a political strategy through their own interests, proving that an independent factor can be the most influential of all.

Roleplay Features

D-Zero Diceless Interaction System

This system will determine all combat and non-combat interaction in DO, and will focus around player skill rather than pure chance. Players will have access to many skills, with the options to add their own skills if the ones I provide don’t apply to their character. D-Zero is intended to be non-intrusive on the player’s roleplaying experience, which means I as the GM will handle most number crunching. I’m still in the process of tweaking the system, as it is custom designed, however it will be completed by the time of the start of the RP.

Tactical Maps and Team Strategy

I will be providing area maps to each player depending on their location that they can use to explore the environment of Four Corners, in addition to planning out battles, preparing infiltrations, setting up ambushes, and more with their teammates. The maps may also be used to find extra equipment and items, as well as landmark locations to come back to at a later time.

Missions and Objectives

Players can be assigned missions and/or objectives based on their abilities and jobs that may award new equipment or services to help them and their faction throughout the roleplay. Mission difficulty is determined by the importance and number of targets assigned and can range from combat or infiltration, to acquiring resources or hacking data networks.

Faction Standings

Every action and mission players take will affect the standing of their faction, either boosting or detracting from their overall power and influence. Similarly, each action bears immediate secondary consequences that can also determine a positive or negative trend.

Open Plot

While every player may have objectives and missions assigned depending on their affiliation, they are in no way obligated to complete them, and may instead pursue their own goals outside of the story. I want the players to help progress their own individual stories, for everyone to feel like they’re the main character and a vital part of the Dead Oasis universe. As I write the plot, I will try to take into account certain parts of each character’s back story that could have significance, as well as their goals.

Open Character

Just as every character’s story may influence the plot, players may introduce their own NPCs that can take a certain role in the story. While there will be certain roles I will fill with certain characters myself, the majority of roles will remain open until a time where I feel they HAVE to be filled immediately.

Living in the Dead Oasis

Whether you’ve lived there your whole life, or you’ve arrived from a distant nation, you can see that the state of the Western Industrial Federation is not how its leaders make it seem to the outside world. With the cauldron of civil-war set brewing and the suburbs as its stage, the social and political tensions in Four Corners are growing. The life of you and potentially your loved ones hangs in the balance as a dustup between the major factions looms on the horizon. While many options lay before you, every step you take may have resounding consequences on the future of the city and its people. Maybe you’ll try to better the government without bloodshed, or join The Grid in an attempt to restructure the nation with revolution. If you want to help root out the sources of corruption in the city, then enlisting with NLEx may be the answer.

Dead Oasis is a tactical roleplay featuring the grassroots of the cyberpunk genre: espionage, warfare, and revolution all wrapped around the mysterious element that triggered it all, Tretinium, the God Seed. Whether you join a major faction, create your own, or hang back behind the scenes to protect your family or your business, the wheels of the city are ever grinding, leaving hundreds of millions of lives hanging in the delicate and tattered balance. Using your unique skills and strengths, you have the chance to change it all.

~Welcome to Four Corners, and please, enjoy your stay~

Hmmm, so is this the not-so secret thread you've been working on? ;p
Haha, noooooo... I mean it's not like I've been broadcasting it to everyone I've been talking to! Maybe...? xD

Yep, still a work in progress, but I'm going to make it killer~

Yes, you've definitely been keeping it on the down low, very subtle :P . Hmm, well at least now I'll get to keep in the loop about it from here!

Of course! I'll actually be posting an update tomorrow with some extra information on the factions and other things. So look forward to it <3

Also thanks for taking a look =D

Okay! Just added information on the Factions and Tretinium. Going to add and update a bit later today on the features of the roleplay that I will implement once everything is in place to get started~ Feel free to ask here or PM me if you have any questions!

Finally done setting up all of the Roleplay info! Added two new accordion tabs today: Character Archetypes and Roleplay Features. I know it seems like a lot to read, but I've put a LOT of time into this roleplay, so if anyone has any feedback, it would be greatly appreciated, even if they don't plan on joining <3

All that I have left to do is finish the D-Zero System and I will be all set to start the roleplay, once I get enough people interested of course =)

If anyone is interested, I set up a Discord server for Dead Oasis, which I will use for certain mechanics and faction chats players can use.

If you would like the link to join the server, feel free to ask me here and I'll PM you the link =)

Consider me interested- this looks alot like a game in text form with the added bonus of actual choice (wow!). I'd be really interested in seeing how this turns out- count me in (Although D-Zero may need some more explaining to me).

Glad to see you like the idea! What you said is pretty much the idea I'm going for. It's intended to be an RP that's based around player skill and resource management, which I think is a little more realistic than dice.

Here is a link to my D-Zero system in the works,

Mechanics - Diceless Combat System

There is a pretty good chunk of information there for the ground works, I just need people who are willing to help me test it. It's designed for a more fluid roleplay experience, and as the Game master I would be handling most if not all of the number crunching. Think of it as more of a structure upon which to roleplay. Rather than a system to limit the players.

That was a long read - but worth it! Definitely interested.
I've set a deadline for myself to have the combat system and character template completed by tomorrow, so the thread itself should be up not too long after that~ I'll post a mention to everyone who's interested once I have the thread finalized ^_^

Hello friends! I'm happy to say that the Dead Oasis RP thread is now open for applications!

Detailed - 【DEADꗈOASIS】

Please take a look, acquaint yourselves with the rules, and feel free to post a character sheet whenever you get the time. I don't have a deadline for starting the RP, since I'm currently waiting for some tabs to be made, but once I get enough applications I'll make sure to let everyone know when I'll start it up.

I also finished the discord server for the RP, however I cannot post it in any RPN threads so I will individually PM the players once they submit their character sheets.

Thank you all for your interest, and I'm really looking forward to writing with you <3

This looks good! What year will the story begin? (I'm sorry if I'm overlooking it. I think that it's toward the end of the 24th century but I'm curious about the specific year so that I can fill out a Date of Birth ^^)

Great question, thanks for reminding me haha. The date is going to take place just a bit after the turn of the century, October, 10th, 2407 to be precise. I'll go ahead and add that into the Introduction part of the thread as well.
