QA
What is this about?
This is about humans who chose, were taken from their homes and the streets or sold to a government research facility and injected with a drug known as C.A.N.I.S. which turned them into wolves, giving them the ability to turn into wolf or human at will.

What are the ages of characters?
Characters can be no younger than 9 and no older than 26. Children between nine to eleven are rare due to so many not having the strength mentally and/or physically to survive the testing or torture if they survive the initial dosage.

What does C.A.N.I.S. stand for?
C
anine
Augmented
Nightshade
Iridescent
Syndrome

Can I make a child younger than nine?
No. Children younger than 9 would not survive the testing.

Can I be an original member of the experimentation?
No. The original ten patients died. The eleventh patient is the only child born in the facility who, according to records, is no longer there and has disappeared. That child is known as 011. Played by me.

Is this a werewolf role play? Will there be supernaturals?
No, this is not a werewolf role play. There are no supernaturals in this role play, just humans who can turn into wolves.

What are the side effects of C.A.N.I.S.?
So the C.A.N.I.S. drug has altered the biology of humans in certain ways. Strangely the drug does not affect puberty at all for boys or girls, they still go through it. Boys voices' get deeper like normal, except for developing a commanding tone to them. This is most often seen in those boys that are physical fit. Girls' voices only get a little deeper or may become lower.

For girls and women, the drug will either halt or prevent periods altogether. Instead, assuming they survived the testing of the drug and the increased dosages, it forces their bodies to go through a heat cycle like a wolf. It usually makes them leaner and slimmer than males to be able to cover distances, hunt and patrol.

For boys and men, the drug will either work for or against them in terms of size, based on their habits and physical condition before arriving. It will either make them lean with a bit of muscle or buff them up. It has the nasty side effect of making boys and men more aggressive in either case, especially when put around females that are in heat.

The C.A.N.I.S. drug has also given each patient a unique scent all their own. Children, should they be born, would end up having a combination scent from each of their parents. It has also given them the ability to form a telepathic bond with each other that humans cannot monitor or access, despite advances in brain research throughout the years. Lupines can also heal minor to moderate injuries from moonlight and gain some sustenance from it along with having accelerated healing. It makes the wolf forms of the lupines bigger in height and weight than normal wolves (who are 2.2. to 2.7 ft at the shoulder), though this is seen more in males than females, but both will carry a noticeable difference in height compared to the gender of normal wolves. It has increased a shifter's temperature from 96 F (for humans) to 106 F for lupines. Basically think the wolves if twilight movies as an example of size of wolf.

How does C.A.N.I.S. work?
For children and newcomers to the facility, the drug starts off giving one a fever that usually lasts 72 hours. This is the first part of the test and usually where the sick and children will die as their bodies can't handle it. It's also the reason elderly weren't taken as part of the experimentation or the immune compromised. Assuming the patient does not die during these 72 hours, the first violent shift happens four days later. A week later a fever sets in combined with shivering. No matter how warm they dress they cannot keep warm. The following week they go through the opposite where they burn up. This feels like a fever but it has led to the death of quite a few patients. Should the patient manage to survive the entire process, they are considered a success. If they die during any part of this stage or when they get the dosage, their number is crossed off, written off as a failure and buried in the cemetery behind the facility.

What other details do you have on the shifting?
The shift itself is violently triggered about four days after the first dosage given when you enter the facility. Bones break and reform, knees and elbows reverse, fur itches and the skin burns as the fur bursts through, slowly covering the body. Hands and feet change into paws, ears recede into the head and new wolf ears form, facial muscles and bones break and tear to reform into the muzzle, the teeth thin to become fangs and molars. It's an excruciating and painful process that can take anywhere from fifteen minutes (for experienced shifters) to half an hour for those new to the change. If one is in poor health, whether through illness or malnutrition, it can take up to ten hours for the shift to be complete.

The telepathic ability takes a few minutes to kick into gear after the change, before that there are nothing but animal instincts. When it first happens, it is all wolf and there's no sense of individuality or humanity. All wolf traits are exhibited and the eyes become glazed over. The first five minutes could best be described as an ant, having no individual thought, only the goal to work for the colony or in this case pack. Once these five minutes are up, the human side comes back, as if from a fog. The eyes become clearer and the aggressiveness of the wolf mind becomes more calm and human like.

Once the shift is completed, the lupine as they are known to the humans, can turn the wolf instincts on or off at will. There may be those who fight the wolf side and never turn into it unless by force, usually by being attacked by another lupine which was often set up in the torture and fighting rings between more aggressive members and submissive members in the facility for research and entertainment purposes. It can cause the lupine to become imbalanced as the best thing is to accept the wolf body and mind as another part of you to become a better person. This often takes someone close to the person who can't shift, either the alpha, a mate, friend or family member to resolve.

If the shifter or lupine ends up switching on their wolf side, they retreat into the back of their mind. They are still aware of what they are doing but it is like an out of body experience where they are sitting on the side lines or watching from another dimension of what they are doing as a wolf. This isn't often done as they find it best, as have the scientists, to encourage the lupine to remain an active part, this is where the merging comes in. Some shifters, usually those that chose to join the facility, love the strength and power they possess as a wolf so much that they remain in a constant state of aggressiveness with some wolf traits bleeding through into their actions and mannerisms. Example is a bully may see the power of the wolf in them and their actions may go from simply shoving someone into a table to an outright brawl in the middle of the cafeteria that usually means someone ends up in the infirmary if not buried in the cemetery out back.

Shifters are able to turn at will and be aware of what they are doing or how they are behaving. The only time they will take a back seat is if they are new to the facility, they are afraid of their wolf side, or they are hunting/fighting an enemy. They are not forced to turn on the moon like werewolves, the only time the moon has the effect on them is when there is a new moon, a lunar eclipse or a rare blood moon. For some reason, the new moon makes even the most aggressive lupines docile and saps their strength. A luna eclipse has almost the same effect in that it does sap their strength and prevents them from turning at all. Blood moons seem to fuel the lupines with energy and anger, making even submissive lupines battle hardy and angry. This is usually when fights are scheduled and when guards are the most wary for they can get overpowered on a blood moon in the facility.

Shifters, kind of the wolves of Wolf's Rain anime, have the ability to heal minor to moderate injuries from the moon and gain sustenance from it. It is not a cure to broken bones or severe internal damage/head trauma but moonlight in general seems to give wolves superhuman awareness and strength to get through things that normal wolves wouldn't be able to survive.

So why were these experiments brought into play? Who decided it would be a good idea and why?
The experiments started as a money grab by a scientist who was born rich yet started to lose money to failed experiments, and once she had found a successful combination, she began to sell off the successful ones. The scientist presented it as a way to clean up the streets of those lesser dredges on society by claiming the streets would be safer without them around. The people agreed, as they had begun trying to get rid of the homeless in some cities in the earlier part of the 21st century, and so didn't object to when people began disappearing. By the time anyone with morals noticed it was too late and they were forgotten, the rich person recruiting scientists and having their paperwork erased so that they were nobody.

The government of the USA soon caught wind of this and due to lack of funding, bought out the rich person and purchased land within Arizona, building up a facility with spacious grounds so there would be no reason to leave. Choosing ten people at random, the government began revising an unnamed drug formula that would become C.A.N.I.S. with the intention of using them as soldiers to protect the government and if necessary its borders. Those who didn't comply would be simply killed and erased. However they were lax at first, giving too much freedom to the original ten. Experiment #009 and Experiment #010 fell in love and created a child, Experiment #011. The first bred lupine...it was a god send. To prevent the breeding of more experiments, separate wings were created and the original ten were illegally rendered sterile. Things were fine until Experiment #011 disappeared one night and avoided capture. Their records were halted, any who came after and might have known of #011 were eliminated as well. In this way Experiments #012 to #030 were eliminated to avoid any risks of more escapes being taken and security was tightened thereafter.

Also is there a limit to how far their telepathic like powers go? Like how far can it reach?
A wolf must consciously choose to transmit their thoughts to another wolf or wolves. There are exceptions in the cases of extreme emotions, lack of experience or altered mental state in which thoughts or feelings may be broadcast involuntarily. The range of the pack voice is approximately three miles, but with great variation between pack members. The maximum range, very rarely attained by any wolf, is ten miles, the maximum distance that the howl of a wolf can travel.

The closer you are with someone- emotionally, familially, spiritually etc, the easier it is for you to communicate with them. If you don't know someone, if you don't understand much about who they are, what drives them, how they think and feel, then the more difficult it is to communicate with them. Much like it is in human speech, but on a more tangible level- you have to be a lot closer physically to make up for how distant you are emotionally, in order to make yourself heard and understood. The additional bonds that come with mating allow two bonded wolves to communicate over greater distances with more clarity. It is also easier for the alphas to communicate with the pack than for the pack with each other: the alpha voice is louder or easier to hear, as the bark and the howl of the dominant wolf is in the wild, while the beta voice is the second loudest within the pack.

How are rooms determined?
Rooms are single for adults, double for girls and triple for boys. Men are on the far left side of the facility while women are on the far right side of the facility. The Adolescent Wing is facing the south and the three wings connect at the Courtyard, forming a triangle. Each wing has a right and left hall at a fork. Each wing is three stories tall, bars on all windows and each floor has a "fork" in the path. There are also rooms, a total of 8 with four on the left and four on the right, extending down the other side of the hallway as well from metal door that leads in. Rooms are as follows and are the same for each wing:

First Floor
1-8 (left fork 4 on left, 4 on right)
5-18 (right fork)
18-31 (left fork)

Second Floor:
31-39 (hallway to the left)
40-53 (right fork)
54-67 (left fork)

Third Floor:
68-76 (left hall)
77-90 (right fork)
91-104 (left fork)

Patients sign in on the first floor of the wing at the desk with their experiment number and room number in the morning before heading out for inspection and then sign out at the front desk on the first floor of their wing at night with the same information. Staff and guards sleep in rooms off of the lounge with four to a room. Guards take turns with night and day shifts that are rotated every two weeks.

Are experiment numbers on the patients?
Yes. They would have been etched into the skin on their inner wrist (right for females, left for males) with a mixture of silver and liquid nitrogen that creates a permanent mark on their skin.

What are the punishments for misbehaving patients?
Punishments vary depending on severity and if you catch a guard on a bad day. Be aware that patients' are hardly ever listened to and can be found at fault with anything, even if it isn't their fault.

Minor Offenses and Punishments
Backtalk earns loss of Free Time and Outdoor Period
Failing to shift into one's lupine form earns a mandatory fight of the guards'/staff choosing and three days to two weeks in wooden cages
Staying out or up past curfew earns three days in padded room
Stealing food earns loss of meals and time chained to the flogging post for three days
Harboring weapons in rooms/on person earns being doused with ice cold water or an ice cold shower
Moderate Offenses and Punishments
Fighting with a guard or staff member earns beating from the guards
Picking fights outside of combat or training time earns flogging with silver laced whip
Not doing assigned chores earns a beating from staff and guards in public
Not signing in and out or turning up for inspection earns loss of meals/privileges for a month
Disobedience to guards and/or staff earns free choice (staff or guards can pick any punishment(s) for offender)
Severe Offenses and Punishments
Attempted Suicide earns flogging in a straight jacket with silver laced whip tipped with metal
Violent Outbursts earns Head Dunking
Relations between patients/sneaking into the opposite wing earns The Pit (though sometimes a guard or staff member will put prisoners in there if they have in it for someone)
Attacking a guard or staff member/knowledge of it earns the catacombs
Trying to escape earns death
How long is pregnancy?
Pregnancy is 9 months long. A female can shift from human to wolf and back again throughout her pregnancy, however during her later months it becomes difficult, if not impossible to walk as a wolf. Most females tend to stay in their human form during their later stages of pregnancy. Their senses and emotions are heightened during this time.

How often do wolves go into heat? How long is it?
Females are in heat once a season from mid autumn to early winter. The heat changes their scent slightly, as does pregnancy. It affects both the human and wolf bodies though is most notable in wolf form. Their heat cycle lasts 5-7 days, during which the female will go through several wolf changes. The signs of heat as are follows:
  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen vulva in wolf form
  • Scent change
  • A female wolf in heat may end up wagging her tail, increasing her heat scent to her mate or available males in the area.
  • Agitation, nervous or nesting-A wolf in heat may be more anxious or nervous when in heat. She may end up looking for a safe out of the way place that is secure to nest in by piling blankets/hides or stuffed toys in a comfortable area. This nesting behavior extends into pregnancy as well, when a pregnant female will begin looking for a suitable place to den and whelp her pups, usually away from the pack. Dens might be a hollow log, an old fox or badger den, a cave if available, underneath a house, or under a tree.
  • Frequent urination in wolf form-A wolf may end up urinating more when she is in heat.
  • Rise in body temperature-A lupine's body temperature is 106.5 F. This allows the wolf to survive cold weather places easily like the arctic regions. When a female is in heat, her body temperature climbs to 112.8 F, normally dangerous to humans but not to wolves. It often causes their skin to feel like it is on fire and burns off any medicine the wolf is given if injured. At the same time, a wolf's temperature may end up dropping if it becomes malnourished or is ill.
Female lupines who have had hysterectomies or their tubes tied will not go into heat. A female will begin her heat cycle about six months to one year (depending on how long she nurses) post pregnancy. It is thought C.A.N.I.S. altered their biology to give females time to recover from birth, particularly difficult pregnancies. Female Trainees begin going into heat at twelve though it is not advised they carry young as their wolf body is not fully developed and it can cause stillbirth, birth defects in children or loss of the expectant mother and pups she carries. The heat is a dangerous time for females for it causes males' primal instincts to kick in and try mating with many females, resulting fights and even death among comrades.

Is there any room in my character/the RP if my character is not interested in the opposite sex?
C.A.N.I.S. sadly did not make it possible for lupines who might be bi or homosexual to have children together, they couldn't change biology that way. During heat, males would be driven to finding a female and may get into fights as females in same sex relationships would be driven to attract males out of natural instinct. If your wolf was not attracted to the opposite sex, even though the wolf's mind might pressure one towards mating with the opposite sex, the human side would need to remain in control and the heat of the females/wolf instincts wouldn't have as strong a pull, meaning they would be able to resist the instincts to mate and produce young. The longer one has been with C.A.N.I.S. injected in them also helps resist these instincts though children would be at risk of being attacked as fights would break out among males, for this reason children would be sheltered somewhere safe where they would be protected. A wolf who is no into the opposite sex could also turn such unwanted instincts off and not be affected either. Generally though it would make males more aggressive and females more antsy with adolescents being the worst off and the most likely to be injured and/or initiate fights.

Are males allowed in female rooms and are females allowed in male rooms? What is the punishment for such?
During the original days of C.A.N.I.S. when the female scientist was bought out, the drug was tested and refined to suit the government's use, the ten original patients who were five males and five females were housed together within the north wing. The staff did not expect that love would be possible among the patients with what they were put through and were surprised when 010 showed pregnancy and nine months later 011 or Grail was born. It was a god send for the staff, the first successful lupine birth but they couldn't have such a thing happen again. Who knew the capabilities of a fully bred lupine? To prevent such a thing the eastern and western wings would begun being planned out and built, taking a year to build. In a way Grail's birth was a curse for it caused the scientists to think about if children could survive the testing but if so, then how much testing could be done on a child? They would find out with 012 and 014.

With 012 (a nine-year-old boy) and 014 (an eleven-year-old girl), they were brought into the wing and became tested. Both survived though 014 had something go wrong in the testing and suffered tremors thereafter in her hands. It would turn out that they had injected her with too much of C.A.N.I.S. resulting in the issue, however she was deemed a success as it didn't affect her much. Three years after Grail's birth the adolescent wing was built and Grail was taken from his mother and moved to room 1 of the boy's wing with 012 while 014 became the first girl in the female adolescent wing. It was decided, that because children lupines couldn't go into heat, they would be allowed to play together only to be separated when they became adolescents and adults. Friendships that might have been made were tested again and again until they broke. Quite a few guards remained in both wings to prevent hormonal lupines during breeding season from joining and siring more full-lupines, after all none knew the powers of a full-lupine despite Grail's constant testing from a young age.

Adolescents would sometimes be made to fight adults as well as each other in those early days. In that time, they wanted to do a test and pitted a child (experiment 015) against an adult (020) in the arena. The results, though entertaining for the guards and staff, proved a failure. Experiment 015 was severely mauled by 020, the adult lupine outclassing the nine-year-old and the young opponent had no fighting skills. Experiment 015 was left to die of their wounds and became the first death of the facility, thereafter adolescents would fight each other with children being exempt.

To get through into another wing, one would need to go through the main facility and turn either left (male wing) or east (female wing), bypassing security cameras, staff and guards. They would then need to somehow get through the gates and doors leading into each wing plus continuing to bypass staff on the way, resulting in most getting caught. The punishment for sneaking into the wing of another of the opposite sex usually earns harassment from the male guards towards female patients while the female guards didn't seem too interested. The punishment for being found where you are not supposed to be, leading to suspicion of a relationship, would end up being thrown into The Pit. Sometimes a guard may end up taking a prisoner to one of The Padded Rooms or Catacombs...this is not something you want to find yourself in for it usually means trouble in more ways then one for the patient.

Can guards/staff enter patients rooms?
A staff member or guard may enter a patient's room in order to check for weapons. In fact, this happens mandatory weekly inspections resulting in all patients being moved to The Courtyard while staff and guards search the rooms. By laws enforced by the scientists, they are not supposed to enter the rooms of patients however it is not precisely illegal according to those in the government funding the research and facility. This doesn't mean a guard or staff member will not enter a patient's room, they are known to do so and it's hard to know when this will happen. Not surprisingly, the staff don't really care much and are known to turn a blind eye to what goes on should a patient find themselves in a situation like this.

How big are the wolves compared to normal wolves? Is there a size difference between the genders?
C.A.N.I.S. has caused the lupine wolf form to be bigger than humans. Males can become quite tall, maxing out between 7'0 to 7'5" which depends on physical condition upon arrival while females get to be no less than 4' and no bigger than 6'5" in height. Adolescent wolves, like their normal counterparts would have oversize ears and long legs, mostly a gangling mess but reaching 3'5" in height max. Children are 3' in height as wolves.

What are the weaknesses of lupines?
There are a few weaknesses towards lupines:
  • Lunar Eclipse causes lupines to become weak and be unable to shift.
  • A new moon causes lupines to become docile, even the most aggressive of them, saps their energy and makes them unable to shift.
  • Silver is painful and can leave scarring.
  • Wolfsbane can poison lupines if injected.
  • Blood loss: If a lupine is severely wounded they can die from blood loss
  • Fire can burn or kill a lupine
  • High-pitched noises confuse lupines, can cause temporary deafness and blindness
  • Electricity-A steady jolt of electricity can make lupines unable to turn and keep them weak
  • Pure metal poisoning-Iron, Zinc, Mercury and Aluminium are all pure metals and can poison a lupine. The greater the rarity of the metal in question, the more toxic. Pure iron or copper would be merely irritating, while pure gold or platinum would be potentially lethal if it entered their bloodstream.
Do lupines have any strengths as a result of CANIS?
Yes, they certainly do.
  • Full moon makes a lupine stronger/gives more energy.
  • Moonbeams: can get sustenance from them and heal minor and moderate injuries.
  • Accelerate Healing: C.A.N.I.S. makes lupines able to have accelerated healing of minor and moderate injuries. Severe injuries need a doctor’s or caretaker’s help but the results would be half that. Example a broken shoulder usually takes six weeks to heal, for lupines it takes three weeks. There is a catch. It does not work if one is ill, hungry, fatigued, or sick, the process becomes as slow as a human. Healing tends to begin as soon as the wolf is injured.
  • Enhanced Senses: Lupines senses are better than humans and much better than humans. Their sight is ten times sharper than a normal human's, twice as sharp as the average bird of prey. Their smell is a mix of a wolf and a shark, they can pick up blood from 200 yards away.
Do lupines keep their clothes when they shift?
Lupines do keep their clothes when shifting. Shoes, not so much. Scientists have tried and found that shoes tend to tear when shifting. They have also found that as a lupine fights, it affects their clothing by causing tears as claws and teeth go to work on each other. The more ragged the clothing is, the quicker it is to wear thin and eventually fall apart. Also, rapid shifting-what is known as shifting repeatedly over the course of a few hours-tends to completely destroy clothing with the end result being a naked patient. This can be overcome by wearing skin-tight clothing underneath one's regular clothing such as wet suits, leotards or bike shorts.

How many children can a female lupine be pregnant with?
Female lupines can be pregnant anywhere from one to five children. They are born human if the female lupine is human or wolf if the female lupine is wolf at the time of her labor. Children also learn to shift instinctively though it is extremely painful.

More questions & answers to be added.

Definitely interested! Questions though; could you explain the shifting more? Like, would characters be aware of themselves in wolf form? Is it at will?

Sure can. This will also be posted as a Q&A up above in the QA post.

You're welcome and apologies for not responding. I went out to get groceries and then had some hard time thinking on the first question to make it interesting.

You may post directly to the character thread (linked above). If you are making a child, we ask that you message us as well as any questions concerning a character.

The RP is open and the introduction post is up. Please refer to the Facility Schedule on the introduction post of the main RP and the Facility Settings for information on the facility in the Lore page. Everyone has been tagged in the introduction post.

nearlyflowers nearlyflowers If you could put your location above both of your characters' posts it would be appreciated. Thank you. Also, it is currently 5AM, not 6AM yet. :)

Also an FYI to everyone. If you, for some reason use the showers/bathroom in your post, put "Bathroom in ____ wing" if an adult (add 'adult wing' where the blank space is) or Bedroom if a child in the adolescent wing. Children/Adolescents may decide who they bunk within in the Chat, using the room number guide in the Q&A thread. Keep in mind you may condense bathroom stuff/minimize everything and adults/staff have communal showers as demonstrated within the Facility Settings thread.

Second FYI, when using a code, please post a mobile-friendly basic text with posting requirements (location, other things in the Posting Information thread) onto your posts for each character.

If anyone has questions on the schedule please ask.

I am dropping a note here in case anyone is confused about Free Time. Free Time is where patients may use the library, the courtyard, grounds or gym for their own entertainment. 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM Free Time is for everyone before bedtime.

Relaxation-All patients are locked in their rooms for two hours.

Adolescent Outdoor Time is also for children, it's just the staff may use "adolescent" to make things easier.

If you have ideas for punishments/rules of the facility, feel free to voice them here in the chat.

I just got flashbacks to the community psychiatric unit I was in for two weeks XD Very similar schedule

Sorry to hear that. I was in one myself twice as a teen. I gotta say I did like learning science though better in the mental hospital than school.
