1 in 10 heroes will suffer a fatal injury during their first five missions against any Malevolent event.
Of the remaining number 3 will suffer career ending injuries, either physical of mental, within the first year.
Of the remaining 2 in 10 heroes will remain fit for duty until their retirement at age thirty-five.
Somewhere in between these numbers are the few who while still fit for duty suffer the effects of Burnout, and are thus moved to lighter duties.

Two hundred years ago the rift between our world and another opened, spilling forth odd energy over the world. Following this incident further odd events became more prevalent, including people developing odd religious tendencies toward beings and concepts seemingly out of the blue, and a small subset of the population developing abilities that allowed them to manipulate the world around them in unnatural ways.
During the first year after this event the first Cult Malevolent summoned what is now classified as a Rank D Incursionary Deity, more commonly known as a Malevolent. Ordinary weaponry proved utterly ineffective against the creature, and the world around it warped and changed into a space unfit for habitation for humanity. However it was discovered that those humans who developed strange powers from the event could damage the creatures and destroy their physical forms in reality. Damage caused to the world by a Malevolent proved more difficult to purge, but through certain abilities the world was able to be mended.
To counteract the new threats of both Cults and Malevolent's a new organization was created known as the Tower of Babel, whose mission was to gather together as many Human Reality Binders, more popularly known as Heroes, to battle against Cults.
However constant battles against the Cults and the odd creatures they summon and worship put a strain on even the strongest of Heroes, sometimes resulting in what has come to be coined Burnout. While research into the nature of this phenomenon is still ongoing, due to the limited number of Heroes available in any given region, those who suffer Burnout are transferred to the Rapid Response divisions within cities rather then the more centralized global command. There Heroes who have ungone Burnout work in groups to reclaim their normal effectiveness, working to provide safety to the cities and a stopgap measure to any Cult activity.
Common symptoms of Burnout victims include depression, a lower then average ability to fight off addictive activities (gambling, smoking, drinking, etc.), and a general weakening in ability.
