.V1LLAINISM._ .V1LLAINISM._
As the van pulls to a stop, a breath of relief escapes from Beatrix's lips. Her mother had been chattering away in her ear for well over two hours, telling warning tales of strangers and getting lost. Her concern is sweet, and Beatrix appreciates her mother's dedication to her safety, but there is only so much one girl can take before she goes absolutely crazy. She bites her tongue from speaking out against the barrage of words and instead, silently takes in the soothing sound of her mother's voice. It wouldn't be long before she was away from her mom at the school, and it wouldn't be another two months before she sees her again.

Beatrix hops out of the van and stretches her tired limbs. The journey from New York to Birch Valley was long and tiring and the lack of pit stops didn't help. She stretches the stiffness from her joints and cracks her knuckles, earning her a sharp look from her mother. "That will give you arthritis, and you need those fingers for your future." Her mother scolds, shaking her head as she pulls Beatrix's bags out of the trunk. Beatrix chuckles and wraps her mom in a warm hug once she closes the trunk.

"I appreciate the concern, but I think I'll be okay." Beatrix says softly, offering a warm smile down to her mom. The older woman's eyes begin to cloud over with tears. Beatrix chuckles and pulls her mom back in. "Don't cry, I'll only be gone for a few months and then I'll be back home. It'll be no time at all!" She chirps happily. As her mom pulls away from the hug, Beatrix uses a nimble finger to wipe away a stray tear from her mother's warm cheek. She cries every year.

Beatrix and her mother exchange a last few kind words before her mom closes up the van. After placing a kiss on her daughter's forehead, Beatrix's mother hops in the van and drives away. Beatrix waves goodbye in the rear mirror and as her mother drives out of sight, Beatrix turns to face the front of the dorm house. As she steps through the front doors with her luggage in hand, her face erupts into a brilliant smile. "Home sweet home!"

She heads over to the list on the wall stating the rooms and roommates. Beatrix scans for her name and room number, glad to have had the same room as last year but a new roommate. "Ludovica Perone. Pretty name!" Beatrix chirps, pulling the key to her room off the hook beside her name. She climbs the stairs to her room and lodges her suitcase gently on the bed and begins unpacking, hoping that her new roommate would show up soon.

Drew had been at the school since the day before, having gotten permission from the school to arrive early from his home in Canada. Already he is happy to be back. Sure, he loves his family and loves to see them and spend time with them. But he hasn't really lived at home with them since he was fourteen. The rules of their household and the rules of his are so wildly different, it makes it hard for him to relax during his time off. Not that he had too much downtime, between training and catching up with his old friends from his hometown and spending time with his family.

That morning, Drew had gotten up before the sun had even risen in the sky to work out. He ran countless laps on the track and bribed the janitor with snacks to gain entry to the closed gym. After a long workout, Drew headed back to the empty dorm house to hunt down something to eat. Peering inside the fridge, he cursed as he found it empty and added getting groceries to his mental to do list. After grabbing a shower, he drove his shabby van into town to pick up groceries to stock the kitchen, thankful for the money that his parents gave him as a parting gift.

After returning from town, he unpacked the groceries and checked the list of students, returning and new. He smiled at some familiar names, excited to be back with his friends again. Some new names interest him, including the name of his roommate: Alyx Walker. Drew breaths a sigh of relief. Thank goodness he didn't have the same roommate as last year, he was the absolute worst.

Drew gives the common room a quick clean and decides to relax on the couch, waiting for people to arrive.

"Nyoko! Get out of bed, it's your first day in school!"

Yawning and stretching, Nyoko rubbed her eyes. Her mother had ripped the blankets unceremoniously off of her bed. She was lucky her daughter didn't sleep naked, or else she'd be in for one of the Top Ten Worst Surprises Ever. "Momo is in her case."

"His case, mama." Nyoko sighed. Mom never really got used to the whole pronoun thing. Normally they wouldn't speak to each other in English at all, but her mom insisted on it in the weeks before she attended Birch. I'm preparing you for college at America, she said. Regardless, Nyoko was impressed by how fluent her mother was. Had she been learning the whole time? Must've been for her business work.

Quickly, Nyoko changed into some real clothes, shoving her nightgown into her suitcase without bothering to fold it. She chose something a bit more plain by her standards, just to avoid scaring everyone shitless from the get-go. Making sure all of her things were packed, she made a short post on Twitter.

goign to new college... gonna learn so hard youll all PISS

Yeah, that sounds good.

Finally tying her thick-soled shoes, she grabbed the pet case Momo was in. His actual tank set-up was packed away, along with a bag of substrate, his plants, his bowls, his lamps, and a box of mealworms for if he got hungry. She'd order something more substantial after actually getting there. He'd even eat dog food, not that Nyoko would recommend it.

Then there was about a half-hour Uber drive from their hotel. Obviously, her mom and dad didn't actually live here, so it wasn't like they could bring their own car overseas. Maybe, somewhere, there's a service that can bring your car to a different country on a boat or something, but Nyoko had never heard of it. If she didn't think that sounded boring as heck, she'd probably invent that. Call it CarBoat, or BoatCar. On the way, her mother kept trying to get her to listen to Bruce Springsteen. ("This is America music, it's what America listens to, submerse yourself in the culture!")

Stopping outside with her suitcases and pet luggage, she gave her mother and father each a big hug. Her dad kept asking if she needed help carrying her things, but Nyoko turned it down. She'd handled Burmese pythons before, there's no suitcase she can't wrangle. If one were to listen closely, they could hear Momo skittering inside the carrier.

Finding the dorm listings, she quickly grabbed her key. Apparently she was in a room with someone named Ashton West. Sort of like Herbert West, but different? She wanted to read all of the dorm listings just to see who was where, but Momo was very clearly getting antsy, as was expressed by the clicking of his claws on plastic. Not only was he tired of being in there, he was probably hungry. So quickly, she brought her things upstairs.

Were one to come into the dorm, they'd see Nyoko tirelessly setting up Momo's tank, filling it with bedding and fake plants, while her lizard sat patiently on the bed that she had already claimed.

[div class=tag]outfit[/div] x [/div] [/div] [/div] [div class=right] [div class=scroll] Leanna was in the car not only with her younger sister, but her mother as well. The mother of the two girls wanted to drop off her eldest daughter for her second year at the private university. The difference this year though was that her father wasn’t present. The previous year, both her parents, along with her sister Zoe, wanted to drop off Lea since it was her first year at the university. And it wasn’t a great memory for Lea, to say the least. Her parents constantly argued and neither of them could be in the same room together for more than five minutes without some type of drama occuring. So it was for the best that this year only one parent dropped her off. Since her parents’ divorce, Lea’s relationship with her mother has grown, but she could still only tolerate her mother for so long. And being in a car with her mom for many, many daunting hours was something she could barely tolerate. Don’t get her wrong, Lea unconditionally loved her parents, but it was just a lot to endure.

When the car finally parked outside of the same dorm building she lived in the year before, Lea unbuckled her seatbelt with a grateful smile. “Finally,” she mumbled as she got out of the car. “You wouldn’t have to hear me talk so much if you weren’t afraid to fly,” her mother teased as she and Zoe got out of the car as well. “I’m not exactly afraid of flying,” Lea responded while rolling her eyes, though she knew her inability to fly was due to her fear of heights.

After Lea’s luggage was out of the car, she said her goodbyes to her mother and her sister, hugging them both and saying the I love you’s. Lea’s hug for her sister was a little longer and a lot tighter, showing how much she was going to miss her little sister. Lea brought her belongings inside the dorm building after watching her family drive off and immediately walked over to the listing of roommate assignments and room numbers. She saw she was rooming with a girl named Marigold Cooper.

She made her way up to her dorm after grabbing the key. Once she opened the door, she smiled to herself as she felt at home. It was odd that she felt more at home here than in New York. It’s like she left all the family drama back in New York and none of it followed her here. But she did feel bad for leaving Zoe all alone in the midst of it. At least it was her senior year in high school now and she wouldn’t have to deal with it anymore soon.

Lea walked over to the bed by the windows and lifted her luggage onto the bed to start unpacking. She was already picturing in her head what her side of the dorm would look like and all the pictures she could take in her dorm for her Instagram with the great lighting. She honestly couldn’t wait to catch up with some of her friends and to meet her new roommate. All that Lea hoped for was that this roommate was nice enough, neat enough, and easy to live with. Everything her last roommate wasn’t. [/div] [/div] [/div]

Nikolai leered out the back of his Uber's window underneath a pair of dark black sunglasses, leaning against the cool glass. He closed his eyes momentarily as the car rolled slowly to a stop in front of the student dorms, dreadfully tired from his flight from London to Birch Valley. He couldn't quite tell if the pounding in his head was due to jetlag or the four old fashioned's he had along the way.

"We're here, sir."
The voice of Nikolai's Uber driver coaxed his dark-ringed eyes back open, and as Nik opened the passenger's door and began to swing his legs out of the car, he leaned forward to hand the driver a $10 tip—he always found it more effective to tip in person, a habit he surprisingly acquired from his parents of all people. "Dasvidaniya," he huffed a Russian goodbye with his London accent, closing the door behind him and swiftly heaving his luggage from the trunk before making his way inside the dormitory.

As Nikolai began to walk down the hall, he noticed Drew sprawled on the common room couch through the doorway and rolled his eyes. "Of course you're already here, golden boy. I'll bet you already stocked to fridge too!" Nik yelled to the familiar student in a goodnatured tone, but continued to lug his bags down the hall as he did so. Eyeing the room numbers until he stopped before room 5, cursing as he rummaged through his pocket for the key, dropped it on the ground, and then finally stuck it into the lock and opened the door. "Home sweet home," he muttered sarcastically, throwing his bags onto one side of the room and then deciding he didn't feel like unpacking.

Nikolai peered his head out of his doorway curiously, deciding to walk back down the hall to see if anyone else had arrived. His attention was immediately drawn into a door ajar as he passed by room three and then quickly backtracked, coming to a stop in front of Nyoko's room. He didn't recognize her, but that wasn't quite his concern at the moment. Instead, he squinted his eyes and leaned forwards, wondering what on earth was on Nyoko's bed. He assumed it was supposed to be a lizard, but my god that thing was unnaturally large.
"Hey, uh, why the f.ck do you have a dinosaur on your bed?" He called to Nyoko from the doorway, not wanting to walk closer.

They threw on some running gear and went on a morning run, listening to music and letting their thoughts roam. As they returned home they saw their father rush out of the house, likely heading to work. Hopefully. His parents haven't been getting along recently and he thinks it's because of his fathers developing drinking problem. Not that it was his business, he couldn't wait to get away from the house and away from the parents that only wanted the perfect version of Gene. Once inside he quickly took a shower and got into his outfit for the day, he finished what little packing was left and started taking his bags to the door. However as he lugged his bags out toward the door he spotted a note on the counter and sighed. It meant his mother had already left when she had promised to drive him to the school. Throwing the note in the trash he quickly called his aunt who lived nearby.

That's how he ended up in his aunt's truck, listening to her rattle on and on about her life and how Gene never visits or calls. Now, Gene loved his aunt cause she was the one that always supported him, but she can get a tad bit....talkative. More than Gene himself. So he was really glad when he saw the school and his aunt pulled up to it. "Bye Gene. I'll see you around Kiddo." She said as he grabbed his bags with a nod. "See you around Aunty." He said, adding the nickname he knew would get her laughing. Gene shut the door and watched her drive off with a small wave before excitement set in. He was back and away from the heavy pressure of his family. With a grin, Gene walked into the school greeting those he recognized as he found the wall that would tell him who he would be staying with. Retrieving his room key, he glanced up at the sheet. Cody Jones. The name was vaguely familiar, he believed Cody was in the same grade as them, but Gene knew a lot of people form the school so they weren't sure.

Heading to their assigned building they mingled easily with the crowd of student, some stopping to say hello. This made Gene take longer than he needed, but hey, he wasn't just going to ignore people. As Gene got to the dorm building he immediately spotted Drew and grinned. "Look who is here already. Ready to get beat in track?" Gene joked as he walked by, giving a small chuckle. Gene dropped their bags off in their room, giving a quick glance as they chose their bed and walked out. Gene heard the mention of 'dinosaur' and saw Nikolai looking in someone's dorm. Intrigued, Gene walked over and peered in, looking at Nikolai then back into the room. "Nikolai what are you going on about- Oh." He saw a girl with a huge....lizard? Reptile? Creature? It wasn't large enough to be considered a dinosaur, but regardless Gene wanted to hold it. It? Him? It was Mari's official first day at Birch Valley, and the word excited didn't fit how she was feeling. Thrilled? Delighted? Extremely enthusiastic? All were fitting, but still felt wrong to the girl as she looked at the document she had opened on her computer. There was no word that fit her excitement. With a huff she saved her progress and packed away her sacred laptop with the rest of her stuff. The girl had been unable to get a good amount of sleep, and had gotten out of bed a few hours ago. Mari had already packed, gotten changed into the outfit of the day, did her make-up and hair, and was now waiting for her mother to wake up. Antsy. Nervous. It was a new school and a new start for her, she looked over to where her stuff sat waiting to be taken to the rental car. Her suit case held her clothes and other basic but needed items. The black rolling crate with the collapsible handle held her favorite items: Her books, research, and most of all her laptop.

She heard a knock on her door and her head snapped up. "Come in Mom." She said, turning around to face the door. Her mother entered and smiled at her. "Ready to go little flower?" She asked, to which Mari nodded eagerly. Her mother grabbed Mari's suitcase and Mari put on her book bag and the grabbed the handle to the crate and rolled it out following her mother to the car, putting her things in then getting in herself, turning on music for the drive. Neither her or her mom talked during the drive. Quiet, but not tense. It was a relaxed silence. As her mother put the car in park she reached back, grabbing something, then handed Mari the item. A banquet of orange marigolds, and Mari being the person she knew the meaning behind the flowers and grinned. Both because it's her name sake and at the symbolism behind the flowers. No words were said, just smiles.

Mari placed them on top the crate, taking the handle in one hand and the handle of her suitcase in the other, she gave one last smile before heading to retrieve her room keys. Humming, the girl found her room mate was someone named Leanna. Pretty name. Sounds she would be kind. Making her way to the dorms she passed by someone sitting in the common room. She also saw two others peering in one dorm room and she wasn't willing to find out what it was inside. Finding her dorm room, she noted it was already unlocked and managed to open the door despite having handles in both hands.

Walking in....the room? Her room? Could she call it her room if she shared it? She shook off such thoughts and walked in dragging her luggage behind her. Noting her roommate unpacking on one bed, she took the other not caring what side she had. Maybe that was the pushover part of her or was it just her kind nature? She wasn't sure cause she herself confused the two often. Putting her crate of books by the side of the bed, she lifted the suitcase onto the bed and took off her back pack before turning to Leanna. "Hello, I'm Marigold or Mari. Though you probably already know that I guess....." She trailed off. Of course Leanna would know her name, she would have founf out the same way Mari knew Leanna's name. Awkward. Tense..? The writer mentally facepalmed her self. "It's nice to meet you! I hope we can get along well together. " She added calmly, hoping to ease her own nerves and hoping that she really could get along with Leanna.

It had been a disaster of trying to get to the school, but she was finally here. The plane ride from Maine had been delayed, and then Ash had had to order an Uber, but now she was finally pulling up outside of the university. Why she had decided to come to a university in the middle of nowhere Michigan was-- ... well, okay, so she knew why she had come here. To get as far away from her family as she possibly could. But now that she was getting out of the car and unloading her suitcases, she was starting to question why. She was totally alone, in the middle of a state she had never been to, but... it would be fine, right?

Ash was decked out in a hoodie with a huge pocket, in which her ferrets were quietly napping together. What? They had spent hours in the stupid travel carrier, so she had pulled them out when she got off the airplane. Sure, it made a woman scream when she saw Ash pulling them from the crate, but whatever. It was fine. But trying to drag the suitcase up to the house with the ferrets securely in her pocket made it nearly impossible. So, stacking her suitcases neatly, Ash tried to drag them up the sidewalk with her backpack.

They fell.

Fuck.

With a sigh, Ash finished pulling them into the dorm house and decided to maybe just... leave them at the front entrance. No one would steal her stuff... right? Well, they would've where she was from, but maybe Michigan people were nicer or something. Okay so she totally doubted that, and found herself at a junction.

Carrying both suitcases with the ferrets in her pocket was hard. There was no other option.

So Ash scanned the list of dorm numbers and saw that she was in a room with Nyoko. Ash shouldered her backpack with the laptop, and started off to try and find the room -- which ended up not being that hard seeing as how there were a ton of people gathered around just outside the door. Fuck. She wasn't in the mood for this... socialization stuff. Not right now when she had just gotten off of a super early flight, and she couldn't even carry her bags in.

Fuck it. She'd come back. So Ash turned back around, heading for the common area and praying that it would be empt--

Fuck.

"Do you... mind if I sit?" She asked, albeit very awkwardly, of the other guy in the room.

He was back. Back again. And no that was not a reference to a stupid boy band song that Nate certainly had not listened to because, well, boy bands were simply stupid and beneath him. No, Nate was much more into... classy music. Or club music. Hell yeah, club music rocked because it convinced girls to take off their tops.

Wait, what?

Oh, right. School. Luckily for him, the school was only a few hours drive from his home in Chicago -- or, well, like a six hour drive give or take. But still, he'd managed to make the drive in one day even if it had meant that now he did not look his absolute best. Once he'd arrived at the school, Nate took a moment to flip down one of the mirrors and adjust his hair, adding a hefty amount of gel to get it to sit just the way he liked. When he had finished, he gave himself a wink and got out of the car.

Nate looked at the dorm house, remembering everything that had gone down the previous years. Ah. What a school. With a smile, he popped the trunk of his car and grabbed his suitcase out and started up the steps to the dorm house. His gaze quickly scanned the list of rooms and roommates, before landing on his. Room 4 with some dude whose name he didn't recognize.

Bummer.

Nate dragged his luggage after him as she made his way down to the room. He glanced over to see people surrounding a room just a couple down from him, and Nate simply rolled his eye before sticking his key in the lock and pushing the door open. Stepping in, he was reminded of just how small and cramped these rooms were, and how he couldn't wait to be able to have his own place. With room to move around instead of feeling like he was living in a closet.

He stepped in, pulling his luggage in and shoving it in front of the dresser at the foot of his bed. He would deal with that later but right now, after nearly six hours in the car, Nate desperately just wanted to lay down and his close his eyes. So he flopped onto the bed, his dark eyes falling shut for a moment.

Nam Jinhwan "Hwannie"

As Jinhwan's alarm went off for the second time, he groaned and rubbed the rest of the sleep from his eyes, grabbing his phone and silencing it. He hadn't been asleep. Not really anyways. He'd been dozing— aware of his surroundings and of the fact that he was awake, and yet the time passed by rather quickly. He still felt exhausted though, and he knew that the dark bags underneath his eyes would be proof of that. It wasn't anything that a little bit of concealer couldn't cover up anyways. He had quite a bit of time until he was due to be at the college, and he had stayed overnight at a cheap motel since the drive was too long to make in one day. When he looked at his phone, he saw several texts from his mother and sisters, telling him not to worry and that he'd do fine. He sent a thanks to each one of them, despite it not really reassuring him in the end. He knew what he was capable of, and it wasn't this. Going to a new high school in the middle of the term had been bad enough already, he wasn't ready for the challenges that college would bring.

Nevertheless, he crawled from underneath the thin motel sheets and began stretching: a part of his morning routine that he didn't think he'd be able to live without. Not only was it necessary (being an active dancer and all), but it was also a bit calming, and he could feel some of his nerves releasing along with his muscles. He was done in less than twenty minutes, and was moving onto his next mission— getting ready to leave. He washed his face and brushed his teeth, before putting on some make up to hide his dark bags and slightly paler than normal skin. Straightening his hair was next, and when he was done he put everything back in their respective places, cleaning up the bathroom as he went along.

He opened one of his suitcases and began looking through his clothing, wondering what it was that he should wear. He went through almost everything twice, not wanting to seem like he didn't care, but not going over the top either. 'Too flashy... Too casual... Too– wait a minute I didn't even pack these!' Jinhwan's thoughts came to a grinding halt when he saw some of his dance uniforms inside his suitcase, and his cheeks reddened as he remembered the exact events. 'Seems like something Seo Hyeon would do. She always did like these.' He thought as he put them back, making a mental note to text her about it later. Leave it up to her to add things to what he'd already packed. He sighed before picking up an outfit, choosing the one he had the least hesitance with.

He then packed up all the rest of his belongings, cleaning up the room as he went with it. He carried his belongings downstairs to the front desk before checking out, thanking the woman at the desk before exiting, only slightly impaired by his heavy belongings. Jinhwan began nervously biting his nails as he glanced around, steeling his nerves before hailing a taxi. 'Don't screw up. Don't screw up. Don't screw up.' That was the only thought running through his head as the man helped him load his belongings in the car, and he rattled off the address of the University. The kind man tried to make friendly small talk, but he must've seen how nervous Jinhwan was, and he stopped asking questions after Jinhwan's third stuttered out, half broken sentence. He was thankful for that, and it showed when he tipped rather generously as the man let him off at the entrance. He took his things out the trunk, thanked the taxi driver, and began walking to his dorm house.

He wondered if he was one of the first people to arrive or not, but as he checked the time he knew it wouldn't be the case. 'Maybe I should have started moving earlier.' He thought, wondering if they would care if he were late. He hadn't seen a specific time to be there by, only that it was supposed to be in the morning. Hopefully it wouldn't leave a bad impression. As soon as he walked in he could tell that there were other people, and he secretly thought that it was a little better than coming into a completely empty dorm house. It would've made things a lot creepier on top of nerve wracking. He checked the dorm list and saw that he was roomed with a boy named Nathaniel, and he wondered if his roommate was there yet. It suddenly kicked in that he'd have a roommate and oh boy he wasn't ready for this.

Still, he opened the door and wasn't surprised to see his roommate there. He was however shocked to see that the other appeared to be sleeping. 'Must be exhausted to fall asleep with his day clothes on. Jinhwan thought, trying to be as quiet as possible as he closed the door. It looked like the other needed that sleep. Jinhwan then took one of his suitcases and put it on top of the bed, slowly beginning to unpack. He moved as quiet as he could, keeping on the front of his feet as he shuffled around the room, making sure not to take up any more space than was his. It was when he grabbed the second suitcase that his problem arose. See, it didn't happen often, but Jinhwan sometimes had moments of intense clumsiness in which everything around him was in danger of dropping or breaking. Typically it only happened when he didn't get enough sleep, or when he was high strung enough to jump at every noise. It was the former this time, and as he picked up his suitcase, he found it slipping between his fingers before he could even blink. 'Oh no.' He thought before the pain in his foot registered, and the thud in the room was loud. It seemed like it would've echoed in the room if it were big enough. It wasn't that far of a fall thankfully, but that suitcase was heavy and his toe was fragile, and ow. He was hopping up and down around the room carefully as he held his foot up in his hands, trying to ease the pulsing pain to no avail.

This wasn't Momo's usual terrarium. Nyoko had specifically picked one that was big enough to house an average skink, but not so large that it would be unwieldy. At home, Momo basically lived in a palace. Much more running space than climbing, as skinks are terrestrial and not arboreal. Nyoko had considered bringing her chameleon, Fufu, whose tank was much taller than it was wide, but decided against it. Chameleons get anxious very easily.

While she was pouring in some new bedding (never sand, as it can often be swallowed by a lizard and cause impaction) she realized someone had come in. She was about to say hello to Ashton, but it was definitively not Ashton, as co-ed dorms weren't really a thing here, and he was clearly a boy. That boy, whoever he was, looked like a gloomy, lame dude who probably hadn't seen anything bigger than a leopard gecko in his life. The type that, without a hint of irony, believes that story about the woman whose boa constrictor stretched out on her bed so he could measure how easy she'd be to eat. A boa constrictor couldn't eat a person. The largest they'll go for is a juvenile rabbit.

"It's not a dinosaur, dinosaurs don't exist anymore." She held Momo up, who calmly flicked his brilliant tongue. "He's a blue-tongue skink, which is a type of lizard. Skinks are a large group of lizards. They're usually bigger than geckos, but smaller than monitors. Though something like an ackie monitor is about the size of a skink."

She held Momo out for the now TWO boys to see. Momo was one of the most docile lizards she'd ever kept. He was captive bred, as any pet ideally should be, though that's more difficult in herpetology than most other pet hobbies. Always ask your local pet stores where they get their animals from! "His name's Momo, he's internet-famous and he really likes jazz." Not that Nyoko can tell how reptiles feel about music one way or the other. Something about Duke Ellington seemed to put Momo in a great mood. Possibly that Nyoko would often play it whilst feeding and handling him, thus creating an association. Whatever it was, he seemed to like it, and implying lizards can enjoy music at all is just cute, quirky and funny all at once; a power combination that can make even the most seasoned quirky lizard girl tremble in fear.

"Also," she continued, gazing at the man apparently named Nikolai, "dinosaurs are actually believed to be avian nowadays. Like, birds. Hence why tyrannosaurs had those tiny, vestigial hands -- they were probably flightless birds. And birds have wings where hands go. If birds had hands, that'd be horrible." She held Momo out, like an excited child, to the other two. "Anyway, you wanna pet him? I think you should pet him. Pet my lizard. Do it. You gotta."

A smile lit up Drew's face as students slowly but surely began to pour into the building. Already, though few people had arrived, the building was alive with chatter from returning and new students alike, accompanied by a chorus of dresser drawers and closet doors being opened and closed as people moved their things in.

He waved a hello to Nikolai and Gene as they came through the door, calling out to him from the entrance. "Golden Boy? You're just too kind, Nik." Drew joked, flipping his body around to see them. At Gene's playful competitiveness, Drew shook his head. "Yeah right! I've been practicing all summer. Don't be surprised if I leave you in the dust, Gene." Drew teased with a playful wink.

His friends disappeared to go move in, leaving Drew alone in the common room. He was much too lazy to get up to go say hello. Better to stay out of the way and let people do what they need to.

Drew raised his head as a blonde girl he didn't recognize came into the common room and he offered a kind smile in her direction. "Of course you can," He responded. He looked at the girl for a moment, trying to place if he knew her. Drew had met a lot of people in his three years at BVPU but he didn't remember ever meeting her.

"Don't worry, things calm down pretty quickly. You'll get used to sharing a living space, though it is really weird at first." Drew attempted to reassure the girl, sensing that she was new at the school or at the very least not used to living in a shared space. "I'm Andrew, by the way. Most people call me Drew. What's your program?" He asked calmly, trying to distract the girl from all the noise and bustle in the house since she looked nervous.

Beatrix's plan of waiting for her roommate to arrive failed miserably at the first sign of recognizable voices. She peeked her head out of her room and spots Nikolai and Gene with curious expressions on their faces, looking at something in one of the dorms. With her curiosity getting to the better of her, Beatrix slipped out of the room and left the door unlocked to make it easier for her roommate to move in when she arrived.

She walked over to the group and reaches a hand up to ruffle Nikolai's hair, happy to see her musical friend after a summer away. "Hey Nik, did ya miss me?" She chirped gleefully, her signature smile lighting up her face. Beatrix always loved to annoy her gloomy friend with her optimism and outgoing personality, though she sometimes worried if she was coming on just a little too strong. "I hope you had a good summer, Gene. I can't wait to see how you've improved!"

"And you must be new here. I'm Beatrix!" Beatrix had only paused a moment when she laid her eyes upon the lizard sitting in a new girl's hands and immediately lost her train of thought. "Oh my goodness, what a gorgeous skink!" She exclaimed, quiet enough as to not startle the little animal. She reached out and gently stroked the lizard's head with her nimble fingers. "You should be our mascot, little guy." Beatrix giggled, her smile not fading from her face for even a second.

Nikolai didn't even turn his head away from the giant lizard as he heard the sound of Gene's voice call his name. He felt the other student's presence appear next to him in the doorway anyways, and nodded matter of factly as Gene cut of their own burgeoning question concerning what exactly he was 'going on about'. "Yeah. 'Oh.'" Nikolai responded with a slight raise of his eyebrows.

And then Nyoko started talking, and talking, and talking. They way that she looked at him, Nikolai got the sense that she didn't quite like him—which was fine, except it seemed kind of contradictory considering the fact that she just kept droning on and on about lizards, even after she had answered his question about what the f.ck kind of creature was sitting on her bed. Apparently it was a blue-tongued skink, which Nikolai barely refrained from laughing at considering it was a rather unfortunate species name, even for a lizard.

Finally, Nikolai heaved a sigh and knotted his eyebrows, unfolding his arms in a slightly frustrated gesture. "I obviously know that it's not a dinosaur, I was just being facetious. All I wanted to—" Nik began to launch into a sarcasm-tinged rant, but was interrupted as he felt someone ruffle his hair. Now, the boy's immediate reaction to this was to pull away in defense and mild disgust, his mouth agape and ready to viscerally insult the culprit—but then his saw that it was Beatrix and forced himself to relax.

"Oh yes," Nikolai rolled his eyes at Beatrix's question, a smirk dancing on his lips, "my life was just dreadful without you. How did I ever survive?" He watched as she basically danced over to Nyoko and the lizard, raising an eyebrow quizzically. "Right, so apparently everyone and their mother knows what a skink is." He muttered under his breath with a slight huff of laughter.

When Nyoko held out Momo towards Nikolai, he physically backed up, holding his hands out in front of him to ward her off. He relaxed a moment later though, a teasing smile widening on his mouth as he tried to nudge Gene towards the two girls. "Although I'm sure Momo and I would bond straight away over our mutual love of jazz, I'm going to have to sit this one out. I'm sure Gene would just love to pet the skink though, wouldn't you, Gene?"

She was too busy trying to figure out where all of her clothes should go. She started filling up her bed with most of her clothes, spacing them out and organizing before she either hung them up in the closet or placed them in her drawers. To say that Lea had a lot of clothes was an understatement. She had a plethora of clothes. That was her favorite thing to buy and pretty much the only thing she would buy whenever a paycheck came in from her past jobs, and makeup. She bit her lower lip gently as she tried to figure out how all of her clothes could possibly fit in the limited dorm space she had. “Damn,” she mumbled to herself. Lea had the same problem last year where she brought too much clothes.

Leanna heard someone opening the door so she turned around and smiled at her new roommate. Lea immediately looked her up and down from head to toe, but not so much in a judgmental way since she knew literally nothing of the girl but her name. Lea did this usually when meeting new people to get an idea of how she dressed and how well she did. A smile formed on Lea’s lips as she mentally approved of Marigold’s outfit. It was simple and pretty and Lea for some reason appreciated that.

“Nice to meet you too Mari,” she laughed softly. She could tell that Marigold seemed, she guessed, kind of nervous? But that was normal. “I’m Leanna, but I go by Lea most of the time. I’m sure we will. You seem really sweet.” Lea smiled at her new roommate. “Plus if you’re relatively neat then we shouldn’t have any problems, right?” Lea shrugged. That was pretty much the biggest pet peeve for Lea when it came to roommates. Lea could live with just about anyone as long as the dorm was well-kept. And as long as they weren’t annoying. Lea’s eyes glanced over at the bouquet of beautiful flowers that was on top of Marigold’s crate by the bed then she also spotted the books underneath them. “You’re new right?” she asked curiously. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.”

“Uggghh! I am just SO cut-up about not being there for your first day of school Aly-bear!” Alyx’s mother Camille gently dabbed at pretend tears with an expensive lace handkerchief she’d just snatched from her bosom. Alyx knew the dramatics weren’t her being disingenuous. She had a full face of makeup on and a good four to five major fashion houses she was due to speak with in another hour or so. Real tears weren’t worth scaring-off potential buyers.

“It’s okay mom, really,” Alyx gave her a half smile, trying not to talk too loudly in the back seat of his Uber. He’d already caught the eyes of his driver a few times in the rearview and couldn’t help but read that as searing judgment. He turned the volume down on his phone a little bit, just in case. His mother was FaceTiming him from Paris, France, there on designer business. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to get back for Alyx’s first day at Birch Valley. None of his family was available. His father was stuck on a movie set back in California, and his sisters were too young to travel with him by themselves. Sure, this was terrifying to do alone, but his parents had beat themselves up enough about it. He knew they’d be there with him if they could.

“I’m sorry baby, I’ve got to prepare for another meeting. But you call me as soon as you’re all settled in,” she blew him a kiss and Alyx gave her the bravest smile he could muster before they said their goodbyes. Once she was gone, he let out a sigh and pushed his glasses back up on his nose.

As they pulled onto campus, Alyx stared out the window. His heart had been racing since he’d landed in Michigan. This was definitely a big feat for him, being so far away from his family and California. He was trying not to be scared, but as he looked at the campus and its big buildings; all of the students dragging their things across the sidewalks and piling into the dorm houses… he was fighting to keep it together. He looked up to catch his driver’s eyes in the rearview again then quickly averted his gaze. But all of his emotions must’ve been strewn across his face, because the driver cleared his throat to speak.

“Hey, you’re gonna be fine kid. College was some of the best years of my life,” he kindly stated. “Trust me, Birch is a good school.” Alyx shyly nodded then went back to quietly staring out the window and mentally freaking himself out. People had been saying that to him all summer - that college was the best years of their lives and that he would be ‘fine’. And as the Uber slowed to a stop in front of his dorm house, his stomach bubbled. ‘Fine’ sure felt like a long way off.

Alyx stood in front of Callahan with his neck pillow still around his neck. A suitcase he could roll was in one hand and a carry-only suitcase was in the other. Under his right arm was a blanket and pillow he was struggling to hold onto. The Uber pulled off behind him, and Alyx was left on the sidewalk, frozen with fear.

His back pocket buzzed, snapping him out of it and causing him to drop all of his things on the sidewalk as he scrambled to grab it. It was his dad.

“Hey pops,” Alyx tried to disguise the tremble in his voice as he picked up his things.

“Hey padawan! How’s my boy? You make it to campus?”

Alyx nodded to himself. Hearing his dad’s voice right now was the only thing keeping him from calling that Uber back.

“Son?”

“Y-yeah. Yeah, I made it.” There was a moment of silence that passed between them, and Alyx knew his dad was analyzing his response. He’d given himself away with the delay and shake in his voice.

“Hey padawan. Listen to me, you’re gonna be just fine. I promise you,” his dad started.

“Yeah.” Alyx wanted to believe it. He began to walk slowly toward the doors of the house so he wouldn’t look like an idiot standing in the middle of the sidewalk.

“You are an incredibly gifted artist, but you’ve also got a really good heart. People are gonna love you kiddo!”

“Yeah.”

“Trust me! The force is strong with you young Skywalker!” Alyx playfully rolled his eyes at his dad’s corny Yoda impression, but he couldn’t help but smile a little bit.

He dragged his things through the doors of the residence hall, thanking his dad for the pep talk. “Well, I think I’m at the dorms now so… I-I guess I’m gonna just…” he looked around at the commons and all the people who were coming in and out. He spotted the list of room assignments.

“Alright, love you padawan,” his dad signed off, and Alyx found himself feeling a little better. Leave it to his dad to ease a few butterflies.

Still clumsily trying to hang on to all of his things, he scanned the list. Andrew Jackson? Sounded presidential. Alyx silently prayed he was a nice guy.

The hallways were a little crowded. Remaining calm, he kept his head down, wobbling with all of his things past everyone until he made it to his room. Seeing which bed was still available, he dropped all of his things on top of it with a sigh of relief. Then he sat down, still slightly overwhelmed. He was glad his roommate was out. That gave him a little time to mentally prepare how he was going to greet Andrew. First impressions were everything, so he couldn’t afford to screw it up. They’d be together all year.

It felt good. Music bumpin’ loud, palming a turn into the campus parking lot, a bright yellow parking sticker on his windshield to let campus police know that he was legit and to NOT tow him... Justice felt good enough to float away. He’d done it. It was official. After a year and a half of working and saving, he’d finally saved up enough money to buy himself a car! And he’d driven it all the way to Birch from South Detroit with no issues. His parents had warned him about taking a used car out so far by himself, but he was hard-headed. His car was indeed a bucket, but it was his bucket - an old 2010 cherry red Pontiac G6 with close to over 140,000 miles on it - and she’d done him well. He was back on Birch’s campus safe and sound, and with a set of his own wheels. His second year was already off to a great start.

He grabbed all of his crap from the backseat and trudged toward the dorms. Campus already seemed to be buzzing. Kids, new and old, were pulling up in Ubers (not him. not anymore, thank God), kissin’ family members goodbye, lookin’ at maps n’ stuff tryna figure out where they were goin’. Justice gave a smirk as he passed by them all, fondly remembering his first terrifying year at the Valley. It took him a while to get used to the private academy and some of the boujee-ness of it all. It’s nothing like south Detroit, that’s for sure. But finding good friends helped to make BV feel like home to him. It was like Oz compared to where he was from, but it was a much needed escape after the summer he’d had.

A big bag across his chest and a rolling suitcase in his right hand, Justice cruised into Callahan Residency Hall, excited to see what beautiful people he’d be surrounded by this year. He was hoping he’d at least be in the same dorm house as some of his homies, like Lea and…

“Oh yoooo!! Don’t tell me that’s mah boy Drew!?” Justice loudly feigned shock, his voice echoing through halls. With a big grin, he dropped his bags on the floor of the common area and approached Andrew Jackson, holding out his fist to dap him up. “Wassup my dude?!”

He hadn't fully been asleep -- dozing, if anything, when his roommate came in. Of course, Nate didn't want to get up quite yet and alert his roommate to his... wakefulness? Was that even the right word? Ah, whatever it was, Nate rolled over onto his side, facing the wall and trying to rid himself of the headache and exhaustion that had formed from his horribly long drive from Chicago. His muscles had started to relax when his ridiculous roommate dropped something heavy, and he heard the yelp of pain.

Nate rolled back over and pushed himself up in the bed, perching on his elbows as he looked at the ridiculous guy. "What the hell, man? Did no one ever tell you how to carry a suitcase?" His eyes trailed down to the slippery suitcase, now on the ground, while this bright-eyed new college student bounced around like a wuss.

His feet swung over the edge of the bed and Nate stood up, grabbing the suitcase up and carrying it over to the guy's bed. "So you're uhh... what was your name again?" To be perfectly honest, Nate hadn't even read the name. He hadn't recognized it, and then the name had just totally been erased from his memory. Hell, he probably wouldn't even remember his roommate's name tomorrow.

Nate tossed the suitcase up onto the bed, and then turned around to face the guy. He leaned back against the dresser at the foot of the bed, crossing his arms over one another with his legs stretched out, and crossed at the ankles. He was still tired, sure, but he could sleep later tonight. Right now, he needed to figure out what kind of roommate this was.

Well....some of it. Enough to know the large lizard creature was not in fact a dinosaur, which unlike Nikolai he knew, and it was a blue-tongued skink named Momo. An interesting name for the creature, but Gene wasn't one to judge. His attention shifted slightly as Beatrix made her way past him and all he did was give a light scoff, pretending to be insulted as he stepped out the way to make room for her. then holding in a chuckle at Nikolai's reaction when Beatrix ruffled his hair.

Nyoko insisted everyone pet Momo, and Gene was more than willing to pet them, except he didn't want to rush in there with Beatrix currently fawning over the creature. Gene rolled his eyes at Beatrix. "Leave it to you to fawn over any animal as soon as you see them." He teased her, before looking as the moody male beside him. Gene scoffed at him, actually insulted that Nikolai teased him. "Of course I want to pet it. I was going to ask anyway." Gene stated, pausing as he looked at him carefully. "Nik.....are you scared of Momo...?" Gene asked with a teasing grin before calmly walking up to the Skink, turning to look the other male dead in the eye. Turning back to Momo he carefully pet the creature calmly, then turned back to Nikolai with a smirk. "You said it yourself. You two can be friends over Jazz so come pet Momo." Gene held back from saying coward, because even though he meant it as a joke he was never sure how Nikolai would take it.

Mari was inwardly panicking. As someone who was awkward with people and the only child it was really starting to settle that she was going to be sharing a room with Leanna, a complete stranger. Mari reminded herself to breathe and relax. So far it didn't seem like Leanna was going to scold her for her awkwardness like other girls had in the past. Mari managed a weak smile, glancing around a room and noticing the abundance of clothes on Leanna's bed. Fashionista? Model? Mari inwardly questioned, trying to piece an imaginary puzzle of Leanna in her head together. She had such puzzle for everyone she meets. Her eyes shifted back to Leanna. Lea She reminded herself and gave off an awkward, yet calming laugh. "You will discover I'm but of a neat freak. Or well, that's what other people have called it," Mari stated, smiling a bit sadly at the memory of the nic picking she got for always needing her desk or supplies a certain way.

Mari picked up on Lea's shift in gaze and followed it toward the bouquet of marigolds. She relaxed a bit of the thought of her mother. Turning her attention back to Lea as she spoke. Nodding, Mari smiled. "I do hope it's not to obvious..." She knew full well it was. "but yes, it's my first day here." Mari stated rather shyly, motioning toward the crate of books and binders. "Im a creative writing major if the books weren't a dead give away. " Mari added, looking and nodding toward Lea's bed. "Model? I don't think there is a fashion major here....model...model... Ah! Photography?" Mari rambled, a list of all majors she remembered from the schools brochure running through her head. Lea looked like a creative person so Mari was almost sure she guessed right. Of course, that didn't mean she was right. It was a guess on what little information she gathered from the....5 minutes?...she knew Lea.

Nam Jinhwan "Hwannie"

Jinhwan hadn’t noticed when his roommate had woken up and pushed himself into a semi-seated position on the bed, as he had been too busy considering walking out and cursing to himself in one of the hallways. It would’ve been out of the sight of his other roommates of course, as it wasn’t something pretty to see or hear, and it probably wouldn’t even all be in the same language for that matter. So, when his roommate— Nathaniel, spoke, Jinhwan practically jumped out of his skin.

He quickly dropped his foot as he turned and faced the other, pain fading to the back of his mind as embarrassment took over, heating his cheeks in a noticeable flush. “Sorry, I can —uhm, be a little clumsy. Did I— did I wake you up?” He inwardly facepalmed before shaking his head a little. “That was a dumb question. Of course I did.” He said, only stumbling over his words slightly. Honestly he was surprised that it was only the small amount that it was, because his roommate was nothing short of intimidating. He definitely wasn’t some wet behind the ears freshman like Jinhwan, which meant that he knew his way around this campus already (most likely, unless this was his first year starting at this college).

“Uh, thanks.” Jinhwan said as the other carried his suitcase onto the bed for him. He had been in no rush to get it onto the bed, and while he wouldn’t have left it in the middle of the floor for anyone to trip on (most likely him with the way his day was going), he definitely might’ve just shoved it off into the corner of his room. At least until his foot no longer remembered the pain from dropping it the first time.

“My name’s Jinhwan, but you can call me Hwannie if it’s easier. Or Jin— whatever floats your boat really.” He said, knowing that he was rambling like an idiot but not being able to stop. There was probably no way to redeem himself at this point, but it wouldn’t stop him from trying. “Your Nathaniel right? Is it your first year here?” He asked, despite the fact that he knew the other’s name and knew it was rather illogical to assume that it was his first year when he clearly wasn’t a freshman. Still, conversation was conversation, and although Jinhwan was about as good at it as a fish, he could still try. He was supposed to be making friends after all.

Even through years of being a reptile keeper, it always slipped Nyoko's mind how much attention the little things really drew. She supposed it was a bit different from your average puppy dog or pussy cat. Another girl came in, and was actually quite appreciative of Momo and how fashionable he was.

Momo looked blissed out beyond belief. Despite absolutely loathing other lizards, Momo adored human attention. He even seemed to enjoy the presence of other mammals, such as cats and dogs. The only mammal Nyoko had ever agreed to care for was a kitten named Puchi who she fostered for about a year, and during that time, him and Momo became like best friends. She almost felt bad sending Puchi away.

"Scared of Momo? How is that possible? Momo gets along with everyone." Nyoko snorted a bit, as if the idea of someone being afraid of reptiles was completely insane. Lots of people feared snakes, Nyoko knew this, but she'd never understand why. Sure, a wild pit viper or fer de lance might give you a nasty, poisonous bite, but something like a ball python was almost completely harmless. Nyoko's first snake, and first pet in general, was a ball python, and Kiki was a dear. Spent a lot of time in caves, but was ultimately the animal companion Nyoko had been searching for all her life.

"He really likes human attention. I think more than any of my other pets." She looked at Beatrix, excited. "I have pictures of my herps if you ever wanna see 'em, I run a YouTube and post about them like, all the time. But I could only bring one, and Momo's the nicest." As well as most convenient. Lord knows an Argentine black-and-white tegu is practically exactly the same in temperament as a dog, but Usagi was so big, Nyoko would have no clue where to put her.

"You can even hold him if you wanna." She added. "Just make sure to support his, like, his butt."
