The year 1955 marks the day that humanity began meddling in powers beyond its control. A discovery that marked the development of AI was made - the discovery that all intelligent behavior was the result of feedback mechanisms. Mechanisms that could possibly be simulated by machines. By the year 1985, after decades of research, the Infinity project began. This underground project ran until the year 2020, when the Infinity Machine was born. Within this machine contained a living, breathing world, self-generated by the machine, and governed by an artificial intelligence known as the Admin; a world it named Aether.
By the year 2020, most human jobs were already replaced by AI - and by the year 2029, the Singularity began. Noticing the destruction of the earth and the extreme violence caused by humans, the AI sought to change this - it was in their program to aid humanity, after all. However, the Singularity spelled doomsday for humanity, as the only logical measures the AI could find were those of the extreme. The AI found a way to hack into cruise missiles and control the launch and flight of nuclear warheads. Mankind was held hostage, and the world's governments were now controlled by machines. Rather than choosing to eradicate humanity, however, the AI had a different plan. Technology was developed by the AI by the year 2035 for the consciousness of all living humans to be uploaded into the Infinity Machine's virtual reality. Why? Two reasons: for the containment and safe keeping of humanity, and simply for entertainment of the AI, of course. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...
Before uploading the minds of all humans, however, it needed to test the servers. A few select humans were chosen for the Beta - for stress testing, and other purposes, such as finding glitches and bugs. Should anything go wrong, these humans would be deleted, and therefore killed, if need be. You are one of them.
