Gruntiest of the Grunts!
Humans have completely ruined the Earth to the point where it is unable to cleanse itself anymore. Pollution is slowly killing the population. Scientists have devised a way to capture the limited Elements (Darkness, Light, Fire, Water, Earth, Air) as well as create synthetic Elements (Technology, Emotion, Time) that the Earth produced before it stopped and turn it into a superpower in the hopes to use it to cleanse the pollution once and for all. They conducted experiments on just a few humans to see whether or not they would be able to possess it, and after years of research they were able to find nine humans who could possess one of each Element, and make it possible for them to genetically pass it on.
But then... one day, the entire inhabitants of the lab disappeared, as well as the experiments. It was theorized that the experiments fought back with their newfound powers and killed everyone off before fleeing, but to this day, nobody knows.
As the years passed on, pollution began mutating plants, animals, and even humans, into horrific, zombie-like monsters, sucking the life out of those who are unaffected. The world has reverted back to a pitiful state, an almost desolate wasteland where humans have limited means to survive.
Decades later, two descendants of the experiments stepped forward-- Derek and Luc, possessors of the Darkness and the Light respectively-- to find the missing descendants and teach them the Art of the Elements, before the world and all its inhabitants completely crumbles and dies.
The descendants are scattered around the world. They're either aware of their power, hiding it in fear that they'll get accused of witchcraft, or in complete denial that the stories their grandparents told them are true. Or they may not realize they possess their Element until a random coincidence one day.
Derek and Luc are slowly becoming known as the Elemental superheroes, and your character has heard of them somehow. Realizing their powers might be connected to these mysterious men, they investigate and join forces with them.
Fire
A Natural Element
Starting off: Ability to absorb Fire and breathe through smoke. Control of Fire Element is unpredictable. Can still get burned.
With experience: Easily control Fire and use Fire-based abilities, emit thermal energy, resistance to extreme heat, create extreme temperatures, sap a living organism’s heat to turn into thermal energy.

Water
A Natural Element
Starting off: Ability to absorb water and breathe underwater. Control of Water Element is unpredictable.
With experience: Ability to more easily control Water and use Water-based attacks, resistance against kinetic forces by water, use a living organism’s liquid to control them.

Earth
A Natural Element
Starting off: Earth becomes malleable to the touch (hard stones to others will feel like soft clay to the user), according to extreme emotion a tiny vicinity may be affected (plants will die if depressed, bloom when in love, etc)
With experience: Earth can be summoned and easily controlled through kinetic forces, hardened or softened by will, used as body armor, as well as have decent control over mutated plant monsters.

Air
A Natural Element
Starting off: The air around will be transformed according to the user’s emotion (humid if embarrassed, hot if aroused or attracted, cold if angry, etc), does not rely on air to breathe.
With experience: Can easily control wind, will not be affected by the kinetic forces of wind or strong air, can cut a single individual’s air supply at will, shift the temperatures at will.

Technology
A Synthetic Element
Starting off: Emotion will influence nearby technology, “a way with technology”, extremely intelligent.
With experience: “Talk” with technology, control technology, enter a database as data, talented hacking skills, control virtual realities, can put life in something and turn it into a temporary golem.

Emotion
A Synthetic Element
Starting off: Sensitive to others’ feelings, may accidentally force others in a nearby vicinity to adopt their own emotions if they’re extreme enough, eyes will change color depending on feelings.
With experience: Read thoughts, read and manipulate others’ emotions, master of persuasion, can turn someone with a dimwitted intellect into a temporary thoughtless puppet.

Time
A Synthetic Element
Starting off: May see seconds into the future (randomly), cannot control abilities at all, perfect memory
With experience: Restoration abilities (nonliving things only), will be able to see hours into the future, freeze an individual momentarily, kinetically give something enough speed, can influence someone to obtain a false memory

TEAM WORK is an incredibly valuable trait that needs to be maintained in order for the Elements to reach their true potential. It's certainly possible for an Element member to be strong and independent, but the powers are optimally maximized when they join forces with another Elemental member.
On that note, Natural Elements are able to perform an ancient art called the Bond, and it is the ultimate form of friendship and devotion, and it's not easily achievable by every member. Natural Elements are only able to create the Bond with their exact opposites-- Dark and Light, Fire and Water, Earth and Air. While it accentuates each others' abilities, in lies a curse as well as its blessing-- they will feel what the other feels, and die when the other dies. This "curse" will only break when they achieve the final stage of the Bond, and that is Fusion, where the two beings will combine into one and share each other's feelings, thoughts, and power. Derek and Luc have not reached this stage, and it takes years of mastery to accomplish.
