Hikaru Akiyama

Age: 21

Gender: Male

History:

Hikaru was born the scion of a proud Earth Empire noble family, a group descended of some of those very few who followed the Great Uniter until her final defeat at Republic City and even beyond. For their loyalty they were granted lands, titles, medals and wealth by Kuvira that soon turned to dust with the onset of the abolishment of the monarchy and the Empire’s dissolution. Yet they still clung to their ideals, proudly stating that history would prove them right and when chaos once more returned, they only had themselves to blame. With time, the family faded into the muck with nought but a penny to their name, becoming farmers and labourers in an increasingly modern world. It didn’t take long for their pride to dissipate, even if they still lauded their so called “titles” over other peasants who still had more than even they now possessed.

By the time of his birth, a farm was a distant dream for the Akiyama family. Like all who did not appreciate what they had, the family eventually lost it’s potentially profitable home in the far reaches of the Earth Republic and was cast out into forests. Eventually they settled in Ba Sing Se begging and scraping by working in factories or market stalls. This is when his parents, the “Rightful Governors of Zaofu” birthed a boy who would carry their dream into a new generation. Hikaru. A bright sun that would guide them ever higher. A sun they would certainly get.

As a child, Hikaru did as any Earth Republic boy did in the increasingly unequal technological world. He worked. Days were for the factory, building Sato Mobiles or the new Varrick Industries patented cheese graters. The nights were spent in the streets of the bright capital, dancing for spare change or playing games with cups and balls against those who would take up the chance. Even if he decided not to cheat like most, he broke even on most nights becoming adept at the agility required. It was hard work, painful work, exhausting work, but those days were not without some joys. Even as the world slowly grew larger and larger and communities were swallowed whole by new power plants, those in Ba Sing Se seemed to grow ever tighter. There was no city like it, no where else with such a unique experience, not even Republic City had the mix of the future and the past that hid behind those walls. And he thrived there, with friends and animals galore. A fact his parents abhorred, increasingly restricting his time in favour of “Advanced Studies” or writing lessons. As if he needed to write.

With time a dark truth revealed itself. To Hikaru it was amazing, something he could brag about, something all the stars on screens used. It was bending. To his parents it was a matter of near impossible heights of importance. They were Earth Empire. They were loyal to the blood of the nation they helped forge. There was no Fire Nation blood polluting their lineage and it could not be allowed to fester. Arguments raged between his mother and father night after night and he was kept inside at all times, on some of his fathers more angry days his hands were bound tight for hours and hours. A symbol of his shame. This all came to a head on a rather sunny day, his father returning to work and informing him and his mother they would be leaving that evening. A one way ticket to Republic City. It was clearly his mother's blood that had destroyed what little the family had left of their dignity, and his father would rather disown and destroy the House then watch it be twisted into something it could never be. A heresy. They had no choice in the matter. Hikaru watched as the city of his birth stretched into the sunset, a memory he would never forget.

Life was hard in what many perceived as the capital of the entire world. His mother did her best, working like she had always done. Hikaru on the other hand quickly fell in with the wrong sort. His bending had destroyed their lives, destroyed so many lives, and he would crush it. It would never be allowed to fester within him. He soon joined a group known as the Empty Hand. Non-Benders who practiced in many forms of anti-Bending defence. He soon found himself an eager student, his days of navigating the Walled City being of great use to his training. Unlike never before he had found a place, a place with people he could work with toward a greater goal. Equality.

Once more it turned to ashes.

During an intense training session, his advancement toward Youth Leadership in the running, he put his all into it. Passions spilling out around him. And the priority of containing what he was slowly faded away in those moments. From his hand, blue flames swathed dummies and opponents alike, a renaissance of fire expelled itself from his body. Soon the building was on fire. Soon he was on fire. As the building melted around him, a falling wooden beam struck his head. The impact knocked him out, searing his neck and cheek. It was only by luck that the firefighters managed to save him, dragging him out as the fires scarred his left arm. The healers did all they could but the outer tissue damage was permanent. He was never convicted for the fire, as no one other than himself was truly hurt the Empty Hand kept quiet about the incident. On the condition he be expelled from their ranks, never to return. His friends deserted him and he was forced to leave once more. Republic City a threat to his safety now. But he was not without hope. Representatives of the Zaofu Research and Development Center seemed to have eyes and ears where even nations had none, and an invitation was graciously extended - and accepted. With a kiss goodbye to his remarried mother, Hikaru left on yet another train. Heading for the place his family claimed to own as a student.

Over the many years that have followed his arrival, Hikaru has struggled with accepting his nature after it's ...adverse effects. Yet still the Center has given him their all. With each passing month he seemed to grow stronger and stronger, his Firebending becoming increasingly more dangerous and powerful. Lightning, a hurdle for many to use offensively, fell to him within a year. Bending heat itself? A rare talent for masters. Another stepping stone for Hikaru. Even though he was tested many times for signs he was the Avatar, it did not materialise, yet no one could explain his exceptional talents. And no one yet has.

Now, after learning to accept, to move on, and to grow, Hikaru has graduated from the Center. At the age of 21 it had never been done before so young, but there was simply not much left to teach. Hikaru, let out into the vast world with continents and islands to explore, now searches for the source of a deep longing that had troubled him since his birth. A connection that has defied time and distance.

Character Organisation:

  • The Empty Hand:
    • During his years in Republic City, Hikaru fell in with this particular group of non-benders. It didn’t end well. Whilst he can never rejoin the organisation, and quite a few of its members who are more extremist mark him as a traitor and seditious liar. He still retains some connections within, friends that did not abandon him, friends who understood what he was going through and friends who didn’t share the fascination some members had with Amon. A man who too had bending, and lied his way to the very top. Whilst not many of these people have any formal power or could be counted on, arguably one of his best friends is the former leader of the organisations Youth Division who now sits higher up as a member of the High Council that deals with the groups direction, doctrine and everything in between. A woman by the name of Akari.

  • The Zaofu Research and Development Center:
    • Coming to the Center a reject, disheartened, confused and reckless, he didn’t quite fit in at first. This changed as time went on. He quickly found himself with a purpose, even if that purpose was waking up each day before training, eating and sleeping once more. Monotony helped calm his nerves. Helped calm him in general. As the most gifted student of the Academy, even at his age, he was surrounded most of the time by many others who enjoyed forming cliques or social circles. He rejected most of them. He’d seen what it had led too before, and besides, he wasn't there to be gawked at. Whilst it didn’t make him very many friends, many of the staff appreciated his more...militaristic attitude to the situation. His status as a prodigy also afforded him the pleasure of meeting with Tai Beifong on many occasions.

Motivation:

  • There has always been a simple desire in him, a yearning for something he had lost, something he had never met, yet something that was needed for him to be complete. Now he searches for it, maybe it will help him accept himself, or just make him smile for a change. Whatever it is, he has nothing better to do.
  • He also seeks a basic purpose in life. The Empty Hand gave him a purpose, then he lost it, the Center gave him a purpose, now he has left it. Wandering around aimlessly might be a life for some, for him it just allows unpleasant thoughts and unconfronted truths to fester in the back of his mind. Things he doesn’t feel yet ready to face. The fire in him needing to subside.

Special Skills/Training:

  • Firebending:
    • Mixed Flames: Whilst most Firebenders can conjure red flames, or even blue if they are adept enough, Hikaru’s flames are both. The outside shimmers with a light blue, but on the inside a pure orange fire rages, covered by the elegant outer flame. The deeper you peer into them, the lighter they will get, until all you can see is pure white. A second sun.
    • Lightning Bending and Redirection: As well as basic Firebending, Hikaru has also learnt the art of Lightning Bending. Not from a book, or a teacher, but simply naturally. Like a storm is within him ready to burst. This made his early study extremely dangerous. Years of neglect and of denial made his abilities volatile, for at least a year lightning was not even attempted as a subject. The times he tried it backfired, the uncontrollable release devastating an entire park on one occasion. Eventually, as he settled, he gained more and more mastery until now, whilst not completely controlled, he can at least stop himself from killing people by accident. Even if because of that unsatisfied inside it is still not a safe thing for him to try.

  • Hand to Hand Combat:
    • Martial Arts: His years with the Empty Hand were certainly good for some things. His training included mandatory martial arts classes where he was taught how to incapacitate an opponent with his basic hands. Or how to disarm someone with a weapon. It also contribute greats to his agility and later, his bending footwork and style.
    • Chi Blocking: Whilst usually reserved for higher up members of the Hand, he did receive some training with this technique. Not enough to call him a master, or even really an apprentice, but at the very least some very useful knowledge spiritually and physically.

Name: Artok of the Northern Water Tribe
Age: 21
Gender:
Male

History:
Artok was born in the Northern Water Tribe to a small fishing outpost, where he grew up helping out his mother with the repairs of fishing equipment till the age of eight, after which he joined his father in fishing for a living. Most of their stock was normally sold at the local market to fishing vendors, who came in from the city proper for fish to be served in fine dining spaces, getting the fresh stock on their own ships as soon as possible, before having the catch sped off to the city center. For the most part their life was simple, quiet and inoffensive.

While technically under law to have children attend at least some form of schooling until the age of fifteen, Artok never really partook, staying instead at home, learning “all he needed to know and would ever need to know” from his father. “All he needed to know” turned out to be how to fish and how to cut down a tree when he needed to. For a time, Artok thought perhaps that was enough. There was a dignity in the way his people did things. A dignity in the way his father and mother went about their lives. Stern against the harsh cold and bitter work needed for survival. And if sometimes they were too poor for oil or wood for a fire? Well, that just meant they got to cuddle together for warmth, which was always nicer than sleeping alone.

Artok always felt it a shame then, when his father never seemed ‘happy’ with what they had. While the man was hardened by the pressures of securing a daily catch that never seemed certain, he clearly cared for his little boy. While the older man would never admit it, Artok knew his father was ashamed. Not just because of his lack of money or his lack of education. He was mostly ashamed of his disappointment in Artok. The man was a water bender, and while he could never really take great pride in many things, he did in the little skill he had in the craft. When he finally accepted that Artok would never bend water, he secluded himself for days, Artok’s mother comforting the young boy in his confusion. Ever since then the two of them seemed to stray further apart, a wordless acknowledgement of their mutual frustrations with themselves and their apparent shortcomings.

By the age of sixteen Artok left his home, traveling towards the Northern Portal. His distancing from his father had him slowly realising that craved adventure. No longer feeling welcome on the waters of the North, he felt that he may find adventure somewhere else. Neither of his parents seemed to want to try and stop him. In a way he was glad. It would not have taken much to get him to stay.

Before the month was out he found himself Neo-Republic City. Before a week had passed there, what little money he had was spent, leaving him desperate to find gainful employment. Unwilling to just give up his newfound freedom and sense of peace he found in simply ‘moving’ about, he set about trying to find something which would not leave him cooped up in a storeroom. Something which, with the high costs of living and the expenses that came with living in the ‘big city’ turned out to be no meagre task. Managing to get by with scraps and odd jobs, he quickly found that either he would need to commit himself to something mundane, or a great change would need to be implemented. Unwilling to return home with his tail between his legs, he broadened his search, trying out all manner of things, adapting quickly to the pressures of being alone. During this time he quickly came to realise the shortcomings in not having had schooling - a problem he addressed with night classes at a local school.

A solution presented itself to him in the form of the United Forces. They pushed him through basic training, augmenting his limited schooling with further education - seeing not only a keen willingness to learn in Artok, but also a discipline that came with hard work since his youth. His uncanny sense of air-play had him rising within the ranks of the air force, before long standing among the ranks of the best fighter pilots the force had to offer - taking the codename BlueBison.
When the letters started coming from his mother, the profused thanking on her part for the food and the money he sent on a monthly basis, was enough to put him to tears. The news that his father could no longer manage to catch reliably meant they had been slowly starving in the frozen wastes. In a way, he was glad he could help even if he knew he could never see his father again. The man’s honor would never allow it. His mother, being eternally understanding of these things begged him to continue to do his good work, insisting that he kept some of the money he was making for himself as well. More quickly than he might have hoped, he found that he could not obey her requests.

One disastrous mission had him falling from the sky, shot down by stray AA fire from an enemy vessel. As he fell towards the ocean, he felt his life move past him. The sheer scope of inconsequentiality had him experiencing far greater existential terror than the terror from the fall. Nothing he had done seemed to matter. Here he was, killing and practicing killing and making good money from it, ending the lives of others while they tried to do the same to him. Suddenly he was not even sure why. The brief was clear in the mission… but the motivations were nothing if not selfish. Trade negotiations. Greed. And as far as he was concerned, he had become a weapon for an invisible force. Nothing noble or worthy, but a pervasive and insidious thing that had him nauseous.

In the moments before he would have hit the water, the canopy flung open and fire blaring in his ears, Artok let go. Accepting his death . Accepting his life, which up until now felt like a series of uninspiring moments driven by distraction and never by more.

And now it was over. Now it was done. There was nothing more. Only emptiness, at the edge of a quick death. A death that never seemed to come.
When Artok opened his eyes, he was no longer in his plane, which had been flung far below into the water. Not sure when or how he managed to break free from the harness, he found himself floating in the air. Lighter than a feather. That very day he left the military. No word. No warning. He turned away from the aircraft carrier that was making its way to where his plane had crashed, flying towards the shore. Less than a month later he joined the Air Sages.

Life as a monk fit him well. It was regimented much like military life. There were ranks. There was order. But every moment was not spent waiting for conflict. Conflict was never the end goal. Instead, the end goal was peace. And he would find it here. Seemingly unaware of his own natural skill in airbending, he was shocked when a few months before his twenty first birthday he was given the rank of a master and decorated with the tattoos of the order. This was the first time he dared to send his mother a letter again. He was unsure what she would think, and when she confirmed his suspicions that the United Forces had him down as KIA - he felt both relief in fear, that they may find him here and return him to chaos, Her assurances that his secret was safe assuaged him somewhat. Her concern over the lack of funds for herself and his father did instill within him guilt however. Far more than he ever felt at not doing something of value with his life.

Before the day was done, he took his few meagre things, and flew back to Neo-Republic City. Taking the first job he could find, serving tea at a Jasmine Dragon, Artok returned to his duties - caring for his parents - while unsure what the future holds.

Character Organisation:

The United Forces
(Formerly)
Artok joined the Forces at the age of Seventeen, quickly moving up in its ranks due to his natural skill, his determination and his discipline. His track record with them had him as a bit of a troublemaker, tending to daydream and ‘explore’ too often, while being utterly dependable when the situation calls for it. His bunkmate and best friend - to the point of considering him a brother - was Liu Wei, a firebender and a dashing smile and a sense of historical romance, having introduced Artok to poetry and art as hobbies. They often spoke of the moral qualms one may have with warmaking. Not having told Liu Wei that he was still alive has been a burden on his mind. The UF has him as K.I.A. Having never identified his parents as his beneficiaries, they have not been paid for his service. He is not able to correct this, as revealing himself would have him charged with desertion.

The Elemental Council of Sages (Air) (Formerly)
He stayed with them for about two years, gaining training in airbending and receiving the rank of master. Monk Lhamo was his teacher at this time, who took great interest in his skill as an airbender, taking time to teach him privately in the more advanced forms of airbending, while also introducing him to more complex airbending philosophy.

The Jasmine Dragon (Currently)
Currently he is working for one of the many Jasmine Dragons in Neo-Republic City. He has moved up in ranks as the time passed, his military training having him inevitably ‘refining’ the processes surrounding work at the store. While it is not making him rich, he is managing to survive, while sending his parents some money whenever he can. He is working under a manager known as Jampa - an elderly airbending lady who is a master at Pai Sho, and has been blind for almost twenty years. She does poetry evenings every week, and has been known to stir the hearts of even the coldest customer.

Motivation:
  • Artok wants nothing more than to just be useful. Not in the sense that he wants to do things that make other people happy. He wants to have a purpose within his life. Something that, should he die, people will still benefit from. Having already almost died once, he fears that his life will amount to nothing, much like so many within the world. He rages against the idea that one must be a silent cog in the machine that is reality… and the fact that he must make himself subservient to it for the sake of others frustrates him. However, he is not selfish enough to actually abandon his duty to other people. While his own spiritual needs are important… he would sacrifice his own needs for that of another. Greed, according to him, taints the soul.
  • He wants to make sure his parents are safe. Secure. And can live out their lives in peace. While there is not much more he can do for them, he wants to make sure that the world they live in is comfortable enough so that they may pass on with dignity.

Special Skills/Training:

  • Sustained Flight - Artok can fly without the need of physical bending. The ability takes little to no effort on his own part. He has enough lift to carry a single other person, or something of similar weight.
  • Spirit Projection - He can project his spirit over vast distances and find people when meditating for long enough. He can also enter the spirit world with this skill.
  • Sound Bending - He can increase the volume or decrease the volume of sound moving through the air. As such he can move around nearly silently, or ‘shout’ with enough force to concuss someone on full impact.
  • Evasive Movement - he can sense and feel the air currents around him, making it very difficult to surprise him in combat. He tends to also move very fluidly and unpredictably, making it especially hard to actually land a hit against him.
  • Military training - He is training in standard combat scenarios. He has special training in navigation.
  • Ace Pilot - He can outfly most people in a plane. Any kind of plane.

Linh Bian is of mixed blood, much like most present in Neo-Republic City. The most dominant traits are those associated with the Fire Nation, porcelain skin and a lithe body easily recognizable. This is due in part thanks to Linh’s father, Xuan Bian, being of mostly Fire Nation heritage (with some Earth Kingdom blood in him, though meager).

On her mother’s side of the family, Fire Nation is likewise prominent, but mixed equally with darker skinned Water Tribe traits. Linh’s blue eyes comes from her maternal Great-grandmother being from the Northern Water Tribe.

Character Name:
Ruo Beifong

Character Age:
21

Character History:
Ruo was born in the city of Zaofu to her father Zilong Beifong and her mother Ren Beifong. Although the branch of the Beifong family that Ruo came from was predominantly Airbenders, it would be the ability to Earthbend that would be passed down to her. This was thought by the Beifong family to be due to a recessive gene in their line. Ruo would spend much of her youth in the city of Zaofu and it may not even need to be said that she was born with what one would call a ‘silver spoon’ in her mouth. As where the Beifongs are concerned it is more of a ‘golden spoon’ as she was not only a member of the Metal Clan that founded and rules the city but the Beifong family have found themselves to be one of the richest and most well-known families in the world. These circumstances caused Ruo to be rather ignorant and lacksadasial as a child, she was shielded from the troubles of the world and if she had even known she may not have cared, as those things need not worry her.

Ruo was considered to be a rather mediocre student who did not care much for her own education, seeing it as no more than a bore and a timekiller. During these years she would much rather apply herself to her favourite hobby of ‘power disk’ a game for metalbenders that was created by her ancestors Wing and Wei Beifong. Ruo had always thought she would grow up to be a pro power disc player and she had good reason too as she was considered to be one of the most promising up and coming young players. Even earning the moniker of ‘Puma of Zaofu’ for her performances in power disk tournaments. When not playing power disk Ruo would be found hanging about the city with her friends, they were not particularly troubling although they did find themselves into trouble from time to time as kids are wont to do.

Growing up Ruo was one who had many friends and acquaintances whom they spent their time with, however undoubtedly the closest to her was a girl her age called Akane, an immigrant from a family who came from Neo-Republic City. By this time Ruo had heard some of what went on in NRC but it was mostly centred around what her family members were doing, perhaps for the first time Ruo’s ears and mind were opened to what the conditions were in that city for so many of its inhabitants through Akane’s stories. It was not Ruo who originally wished to move to NRC and join the NRCPD, she was more than content to stay in Zaofu and continue progressing towards her promising career in power disk. However when Akane came to Ruo one day and told them that they intended to return to NRC because they believed that the people there needed as much help as they could get and that she could not live with herself if they ignored their plight. It seemed that Akane had prepared herself for the two of them to go separate ways, however Ruo instead responded. “Alright then. Wherever you go I will follow. Akane.”

The two girls did not immediately pack up their belongings and travel to NRC of course, but rather it was a few months before Ruo and Akane moved. As Ruo and her parents made arrangements with members of the Beifong family in NRC to come and live with them. It was hard leaving her friends and family behind in Zaofu, even if she knew that it wouldn’t be forever and that realistically she could return to them anytime she wanted. And so soon after their 14th birthdays the two girls found themselves beginning their new lives in NRC.

Ruo continued her education in NRC and when she was not spending her free time with Akane she was most likely taking part Pro-Bending, joining a young team that was arranged by the Beifong family named ‘The Zaofu Metal Pumas” taking its name from its team leader. It did not take long for ZMP to establish themselves as a promising up and coming team in Pro-Bending. Metalbending was prohibited in Pro-Bending however Ruo was able to carryover her athleticism, precision and ferocity that she worked so hard to hone in her years of playing power disc.

However, it was only for two years that Ruo participated in the world of Pro-Bending seriously. For when she turned 16 she had turned her attention to join the NRCPD alongside Akane. As recruits Ruo was not particularly enthusiastic about the job, it was more demanding than she thought it would have been and if it wasn’t for the passion that Akane showed for it she likely would have quit herself and returned to Pro-Bending. As time went on though Akane’s passion rubbed off more and more onto Ruo. It wouldn’t be entirely correct to say that she felt like she was “making a difference” but it was more that she felt good doing good. It sounded quite selfish even to Ruo but she was never one to deny her feelings. Which was what Ruo considered to be her greatest blessing on this world. For it gave her the courage to confess her love to Akane, and the two grew closer than they ever had been before. The two young women promised that they would marry each other when they came of age.

These were perhaps the brightest years of her life. In Ruo’s mind they undoubtedly were. She continued to grow more and more dedicated to her job and soon found herself truly believing that the work she and Akane did would help others. Outside of her work Ruo began to donate to charities and volunteer along with Akane to help those who need help the most. She learned to truly empathise with not only humans but also the spirits who found themselves downtrodden and forgotten. For a long time Ruo had felt that they were only doing this because Akane was but that was no longer. Ruo truly felt from the bottom of her heart that the best use of her life was to help others. To not only save lives but help people up back to their feet, to aid them in their path in life. To fight for true justice and to always welcome strangers with a warm smile and open hands. Ruo took to jokingly calling the two of them ‘superheroes’ which always made Akane chuckle.

However these years would soon come to an end with an admission of guilt from Akane. She had been living with a terminal illness for a few years now and she had not had the courage to tell Ruo. This was something that Ruo refused to accept. Technology and medicine has come so far over the years and the Beifong family were at the forefront of much research in the world. Surely her family could do something to help? Even if they couldn’t treat her themselves then they could use their immense wealth to just get a doctor who could. However that was simply not possible. Even with all the advancements that had been made, death still came for everyone. And far too soon for some.

Akane’s health deteriorated over the next year and by the end found herself confined to a hospital room. Every moment of her free time Ruo had she spent with Akane, at times refusing to even go into work. She likely would have left the NRCPD if Akane had not made her promise to her that Ruo would continue their work. It soon became clear that Akane’s time was near. But the two women still had to fulfil their promise to one another. The families of the two were invited to a small and simple wedding, for the two believed that being together was enough, there was nothing more that they needed. It was after the wedding procession that Akane presented a finely made locket. A locket that Ruo claimed was “the second most beautiful thing she had ever seen.” Inside was a picture of the two of them, the one that they had taken on their first day in the NRCPD. Ruo would go on to wear this locket everyday that followed, vowing to wear it until the end of her days.

It was only for a few months that the two spent their time together as a married couple. But at the end Akane was more than content with the life she had lived. Ruo had felt as if her heart was being torn to pieces, however would not allow herself to spoil any of the time that they had left. Ruo was with Akane when she passed away. She felt that on that day a part of herself had left her. After Akane’s funeral Ruo made a vow to herself. That she would continue their dreams and that she would do as much good in this world as possible. That she would not commit any evil act no matter how trivial it might be to do so. That she would carry out any good act that she could no matter how small or negligible it might seem. From now on in Ruo’s mind she lived her life for the benefit of others. That the rest of her had died with her beloved.

Ruo dedicated herself fully in her efforts through work and her activities outside work. Her superiors began to take more and more notice of her and the work she did, eventually promoting her to a position in the elite metalbending force of the NRCPD. She would serve for three years as a member of the metalbending force, within which she would become a well respected member of the force and eventually her moniker of ‘Puma of Zaofu’ managed to find new life among her co-workers and the people of NRC.

Ruo did not leave the force voluntarily, but rather she was forced out for what her superiors saw to be for her own safety and benefit. Ruo was a first responder to a terrorist attack within NRC. She along with several other members of the force risked their lives to not only protect and save civilians but also to fight off the perpetrators while doing so. Her lack of care for her own safety and even life led Ruo to throwing herself in harm's way one too many times and found herself heavily injured, which led to the further endangerment of her peers as well as the people she was trying to protect. Ruo was evaluated to be Psychologically and Physically unfit to serve on the force following the attack and so was put on extended leave. She was dealt significant trauma to the head which resulted in her losing hearing in her right ear along with visual impairment. This left Ruo feeling a great amount of bitterness and anger, however it was guilt that she felt most of all. Ruo was put on indefinite leave, being told that she could continue her work once she was deemed able to.

Ruo was hopeless, spiralling down into a pit as she found herself useless to just about everyone. More and more of her time was spent volunteering to help those who needed it the most and at one particular event she ran into a woman who she would come to know as Linh Bian. Over time Ruo and Linh spoke more and more, eventually leading to Ruo saying that she would help Linh in her cause of searching for the Avatar. And for the past month that is what Ruo has been doing.

Character Organisation:
Pro-Bending Circuit (formerly):
Ruo once led the up and coming young Pro-Bending team named 'The Zaofu Metal Pumas'. The team was very successful managing to come out on top of several tournament brackets in their day. The team was discontinued due to its members wanting to pursue different interests.

Neo-Republic City Police Department (NRCPD):
Ruo was a member of the force for 5 years, 2 as a new recruit under the guidance of Corporal Zhang Wu, and 3 as a member of Captain Sima Jian's elite metalbending squad. Both men had taken on a mentor like role to Ruo and over the years had grown to be close friends outside of work as well.

Although not officially resigned or fired, Ruo has been put on an "indefinite leave" due to her condition. Despite claiming that she was still more capable than several of her peers on the force even as she was now the NRCPD continued to refuse her pleas to return to work. And so Ruo set her eyes to look for other ways to help the people in order to fill that hollowness she felt so painfully.

Character Motivation:
A Promise:
Ruo has sworn to help bring as much good to the world as she possibly can. A vow that she can never forsake as long as she still holds love in her heart for Akane. Originally to Ruo this meant giving it her all to her work however her mind began to change once she grew more and more curious about the Avatar. If she could help to find the Avatar then she surely would have made good on her promise as the Avatar would no doubt guide humanity to a brighter, peaceful future. But even then her work would not be done, she is resolved to not stop in her efforts until she has drawn her last breath.

To Stand Tall Against All the Worlds Evils:
The unyielding determination of one who champions justice for all. Ruo has vowed to never rest while she can still do good for others. No matter how many times she must put herself in harms way or must even lay down her life. If it means saving just one more person, she will go on, on and on until there is nothing left.

Special Skills and Training:
Earthbending:
Ruo is known to be an exceptional Earthbender, enough to be considered a potential top tier player in the Pro-Bending circuits if she had not chosen another path. Even now the 'Puma of Zaofu' receives the occasional offer from a team to join up with them every now and then. Mostly she was taught by other members of the Beifong family or contacts that the family had, although Ruo had grown to be a person who did not believe in limiting themselves and so tried to pick up things from different people whenever she could over the years.

Metalbending:
While an impressive Earthbender, the Metalbending talent that Ruo displays could only be described as 'ace'. As a youth she quickly grew to be very proficient in it through her love of the game Power Disk and so she spent a lot of her time practicing and practicing her bending skills. Furthermore her talents were further refined through her training with the NRCPD as she joined its elite metalbending team.

Martial Arts (Bending):
Ruo's martial arts used in junction with her bending is a very impressive thing indeed. With her raw athleticism she was able to take quickly to a variety of disciplines and augment them in a way that fit her style of fighting. Ruo fights in a quick and powerful fashion with a ferocity to match her moniker, focused on subduing the opponent by delivering damaging blows that pierces the outside of the body to damage the inside.

Martial Arts (Non-Bending):
This is a necessity for those within the NRCPD, Ruo is perfectly capable of handling herself against non benders without having to resort to her own bending ability. She is also well aware of the dangers that Chi blocking presents benders and has been trained by the NRCPD in how to best defend against it.

Pro-Bending/Power Disk:
As mentioned before Ruo is considered to be a 'top tier' player in both of these sports and in the minds of many of its more dedicated fans her choice to instead pursue her career in the NRCPD has been quite a loss for the sport.

Their first home was the Earth Kingdom, where they met as children. Jian was a rowdy child who rarely obeyed the desires of his mother—Mei was a daydreamer with dreams too staggering to be contained in the dreary Chin Village. They met initially by simple happenstance. Jian's curious mind was too great to be completely inhibited by his mother's desires; instead, she merely guided him. He was to remain within their villages borders, never travel after dark, and always retain a map with his belongings. He was known to many of their village's citizens due to his adventurous nature, one of his favorite spots was the merchant district;it was the place where he was most likely to meet foreigners in their village. Jian met Mei outside of her father's butcher—she did not appear to be anything particularly grand or special, but Jian was happy to speak with anyone his age. Mei was shy at first, although it only took a single day for the two of them to become friends. The pair had spent many days besides one another while sharing their dreams. When the two grew older and the restraints on their goals became too great to bare, the two simply considered taking off. They agonized and planned for many days before taking whatever they could hold and sneaking out of the village's borders. Their excitement dulled the true nature of the circumstances they put themselves in. They had little food, little water and little experience. It was easy enough to create shelters with Jian's earthbending, but they still had hardships. There were many days where Mei was unable to secure any food for their initial voyages. The rumbling of their stomachs was muted by the buzzing joy on their faces. They were stronger now, albeit thinner. What was most important, however, was that they were more happy now than they ever remembered. They traveled on foot, along the sea and air. The sand bending colonies were said to be an illusive group of nomads that breezed through the desert as if it were the sea. They parted the oasis of sand in moving structures so large they were said to be "moving cities." It was the next spot marked on their map. Once they discovered the illusive group, the pair took an immediate liking to them. They danced, sung songs and drank with these people for many days and nights. It was the longest they stayed in one spot since they were children. The passion emanating from the village bled into their souls and translated into their bodies. After several ardent months, Mei found her belly growing larger. The pairs temporary residence with the sand bending colony had grown longer and longer. They could not risk travelling while Jian was pregnant. The sand benders accommodated their new friends to the best of their ability. "Stay as long as you need." The idea of finally settling down with a group of people was terribly frightening to the both of them. How long would this last? Would the brisk kiss of the North Pole be forever lost to them—would the drum of the Fire Nation's rice fields go too? The arid climate of the desert was a good taste too, but there were still so many to enjoy. The pair stayed with a kind woman known as Ju. She had a vacant spot in her home for the pair to stay as her husband passed a year prior. She enjoyed the company and attempted to steel their nerves to the best of her ability. After their son was born, it was decided that the pairs haven with the sand benders would become permanent. They had a child to raise, now and this was the best thing they could have hoped for—considering their circumstances. Their son would be called Jin. His namesake was inspired by the bright golden hue of the desert's sands. This name was given to him by Ju, as his parents were too wrought with despair. He was an anchor. A shackle and chain. A constant reminder of the freedom they surrendered. They worked now, not for themselves but for the others in their colony. They were counted alongside their ranks now, no longer were they "just friends." There were parts of his commune that, much like his parents, were not above thievery. They were not murderers, yet not honorable thieves. They kept what they stole for themselves, but generally did not harm anyone. Jin made quick-friends with a boy called Shu. Shu happened to be the son of one of such parties and regularly joined his father in his work. Shu had attempted to mug Jin, yet he had fought back. Stealing from members of the community was something that was explicitly forbidden and Jin was prepared to rat the other boy out for this. Shu had managed to convince him not to, the other boy promised to let Jin partake in "something fun and amazing" without going into further detail. Interested in the offer, Jin agreed. Indeed, joining that band of thieves granted Jin some of his most fond memories. His parents negligence and outright disdain towards him made him feel isolated and this was the first time he felt he was part of something greater. The most memorable encounter during this period would involve a man who's name he would later know to be Anil. It was a normal job, sneak up on the target, restrain them and take them for all they're worth. Yet their forces were bested in a flash as a man with a breezy bow and fast hands incapacitated each of them. Anil was an airbender with fancy robes and a straw-hat. Not a hint of hostility was apparent among Anil's features after their skirmish. Instead, he bandaged their wounds with his own supplies and pleaded with them to allow him passage into their commune. It was obvious that the man was searching for something there, but he gave no details as to what. Although their pride was hurt, there was an obvious debt to be paid. Jin was incredibly curious as to what Anil's intentions were. Jin used what skills he had picked up on from his "career" to trail Anil as he searched. Anil spoke to various families and children asking them questions pertaining to their bending ability. Anil was especially transfixed on their age. It became apparent that the bowmen was searching for a someone rather than a something. This made Jin all the more intrigued. Anil was not numb to Jin's stalking, but preferred to give him the chance to confront him himself. After he was unable to derive anymore information from simple observation, he had chosen to do so. "Are you searching for something? I can help you, if you pay." Anil searched his gaze curiously, but gave no response of his own—instead he wore a sly grin on his face. "Ever shot an arrow before?" The next three days Anil had spent the afternoon between his investigations teaching Jin the basics of his craft. Jin was not especially talented initially, but proved to be a good listener. Shu had provided Jin a home among his brigands and this man felt more like a father than his own blood. Jin understood he could not stay long, but was especially disappointed that Anil seemingly vanished without warning. Jin went to their usual training spot to mope about this loss, which is where he found a box that contained a white lotus and a note. "If you still want to know what I'm looking for... find me." The loss he felt in his chest was consumed by hot furor— the man leaves without warning then challenges him like this? He sold many of the prizes yielded from his adventures with Shu and purchased a longbow, arrows and a plethora of supplies. He said his good-byes to Shu, left a note on his bedside for his parents and took off into the molten desert. He traveled across the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, in search of a man that matched the description of his former tutor. His journey had rivaled that of his parents, but he had convinced himself that this was different. Rather than simple leisure, Jin had searched for purpose. It took him three years to hunt the bastard down. When Jin caught him, Anil was simply sitting down sipping tea outside a restaurant as if it were the most languid day possible. Thus, Jin sneaked up behind Anil and decked him hard in the back of the head. Anil spat out his tea and instantly reached for his bow before he saw the face of his attacker. No words were exchanged between the two for a moment, before Anil howled with laughter. "Seems you've gotten better without me." Jin struggled not to strike him a second time. Somehow, the young archer managed to suppress his anger long enough for Anil to direct him elsewhere. The two met at a discreet location and Anil finally saw fit to explain himself. Turns out, Anil was a part of a small group of people that were still hopeful for a new avatar. Anil would give further instruction, as promised, but also offered Jin another invitation— to join their order. Jin would accept the training, but still needed time to consider if joining that group would be wise. He would essentially be dedicating his life to pursuing something that may be entirely fruitless; it is very well possible that there simply will not be a new avatar. He reflected back to his parents and their aimless wandering. He reflected on his treatment and how they scorned him for being the reason why they were no longer able to do so. A life that lacked purpose; goals, he did not want the same for himself. Determined, he finally gave his teacher an answer and joined their order as a simple sentry underneath Anil's watch. The life of a sentry was not especially challenging. Initially, he was somewhat intimidated by the fact that many of their members were benders. Remembering the time he spent with Shu and the many talented sandbenders among their father's watch eased some of this hesitation. He is now a field-worker tasked with gathering any and all information pertaining to the avatar's possible location. [/div] [/div] [div class="scrollBox two"] [div class=mainHeader style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"] Characteristics [/div] [div class=mainSubheader] Organizations [/div] [div class=mainText] The Sand Bender Colonies: The remnants of Jin's childhood memories were experienced among these people. Although he left his home, he still loves the people there and one day hopes to return. That circumstance will have to wait until his goals are achieved, however. His closest friend of which, a sandbender by the name of Shu is now quite the notorious thief among their populace. The White Lotus: Jin is known to be a efficient worker with quite the temper. He is a new, but reliable member of their organization. Jin has proven that he will be obstinate in any task they give him, no matter how great, no matter the duration. His sponsor for joining the organization is an airbender by the name of Anil. Anil is an intermediate member of the group, but his judgement is trusted. [/div] [/div] [div class="scrollBox three"] [div class=mainHeader] Motivation [/div] [div class=mainText] All life must pursue something in order to progress, no matter what is being chased it is important that nothing remains in stasis. It is uncircumstantial as to what is being sought, one must always have a goal to move towards. A lack of purpose breeds fragility and resentment. This resentment is directed both towards oneself and others. The avatar is the ultimate culmination of this ideology; they are the driving force of humanity, a great entity that has always succeeded in driving the world forward. Without the avatar, it is likely that the world would eventually be thrown into turmoil. It is definite that the fragile global peace that has developed will crumble. With nothing pushing forward the world will instead regress. Jin believes that it is simply a matter of time before this starts occurring in mass. [/div] [/div] [div class="scrollBox four"] [div class=mainHeader] Skills [/div] [div class=mainSubheader] Sharpshot [/div] [div class=mainText] Through both Anil's tutorage and his own efforts, Jin has become a skilled archer. His fingers are hasty in their movements, he can nock a new arrow near instantly after loosing the one previous to it. His aim is accurate and he is able to account for outside factors with some ease. The wind is barely an obstacle for him now. He has garnished a natural intuition for the wind's speed and direction merely from feeling it against his skin; it is so innate to his mindset that he no longer has to purposely consider it. [/div] [div class=mainSubheader] Tracking [/div] [div class=mainText] Jin is very competent when it comes to gathering information. He knows what questions to ask and who to ask them to— so long as he manages to keep his temper in check. He can track targets along vast distances with some effort. Many of his colleagues have even compared his likeness in this area to that of a Shirshu. Most of his prowess in this field isn't innate talent, rather, it simply stems from his inability to give up where others would. [/div] [div class=mainSubheader] Hand-to-Hand [/div] [div class=mainText] In regards to close-quarters combat, Jin is lacking in any form of formal tutorage. He is quick enough on his feet to best your average man, but not much more. He is forced to merely rely on both basic form and instinct alone to combat anyone who manages to get within an arm's length. [/div] [/div] [/div][/div] [/div][/div] [/div][/div][/div]
