Fantasy .

A brisk and peaceful morning loomed over Hawking Hills State Park in Ohio. A newly hatched North American White and Gold Macaw opened its sleepy eyes and looked around for its parents. It was a Male North American White and Gold Macaw, a species that is nearly completely extinct due to its natural golden coloured features. There were mainly the official White and Gold Macaw, and then there was the South and North American Sub-categories. The North American White and Gold Macaw is the only Macaw species to have territory in North America.

Earlier in the morning, the hatchling’s parents flew out to find some food for the little guy, but as they were hunting for food, they became hunted as a hunter shot down the two birds for the features, never mind the illegal activity involved in hunting them for anything. As the day went on, the Macaw started to become hungry and thirsty and soon began to call out for his mother and father, with no luck, but he still tried.

A representative from the Cincinnati Zoo heard the distance cries for the Macaw’s mother and father. He was starving, and just about dehydrated. When the representative managed to climb the tree, and find the Macaw in the tree, He grabbed a hold of the Macaw chick gently and kept him warm as he quickly got to his car, and took to one hour trip from Hocking Hills to the Columbus Zoo, in Columbus, Ohio. From there, the bird was named Diego, and was treated at the Columbus Zoo. Once at health about a week later, he was sent down to the Cincinnati Zoo. It was only fair he was at the Cincinnati Zoo since a Cincinnati Zoo representative found him.

In the years following the incident, Diego grew up to become the most famous Macaw in the mid-west and East coast of the United States of America. He was made into a show bird for the show ‘Wings of Wonder.’ As his fame continued to grow, so did the target on his head. Smugglers have tried to get into the zoo and steal the rare bird. But have yet to do so.

Born in the wild, and raised in captivity. Diego wanted to actually be in the wild, all his life he’s been known as the rare White and gold Macaw, and possibly the last of his kind. It sucked, he had no one. No one of his species was there to help him if he ever needed it. He never truly knew what happened to his parents, he didn’t even know what the real Amazon looked like.

Sometimes, at night, Diego would look up at the Cincinnati Skyline, and wish he could just spread his wings, and take flight, just to fly around Cincinnati and come back, but he knew if he did. Something could happen to him, he could hit something he couldn’t see, and hurt himself, maybe even kill him. Plus smugglers can spot him from a mile away; it’s too risky to be out there. Yet, he still wishes for 5 minutes at least, he could fly around outside of the Zoo walls… but that would never happen… would it? He sighed as the thought ran though his mind as he watched the twinkling lights of a few stars from the grey night sky due to the city’s light pollution. He wish he could fly on out there… but maybe later, or another time.

Sapphire

Sapphire had been at the zoo since she could ever remember, and she often hung around her friends - Diego and Tupi. They both really didn't understand her view on life at the zoo.

Unlike some other birds, Sapphire had loved being on show. People's jaws dropped at her colourful feathers and her magnificent flying. She felt perfect where she was - sure, there was a day here and there where she wanted to have a fly around outside the zoo, but it wasn't a common thought for her.

Sapphire, being the great and supportive friend she was, noticed Diego seemingly staring at the sky, like he did every night. With her little legs, she hopped along a branch, closer to him.

"Something the matter?" She chirped, trying to cheer him up.

Aurelia

Aurelia was always different in the Amazon. Not that different, but different. She was a South-American Goldd and White Macaw, and sh had never seen anyone else like her; ever. Nor was she really seen, but really, she was just good at hiding.

Unlike many of her kind (Macaws, that is.), Aurelia never knew her parents, since they were probably the most unlucky, and got found and hunted before her birth. But, her aunt - strangely, a cockatoo - raised her, but never talked to her about her parents, but she didn't mind.

In her small cluster of birds, she had developed the reputation of being the rebellious, yet most free bird. She always flew out into 'unsafe areas' for birds, but was never afraid. She was known as Auri to everyone, and never spoke of her true name.

Why she never spoke of her name? No one knows, not even herself. And she often thought about why this was the case when she flew, letting her feathers ruffle in the piercing cold air of the night. Realising it was almost to dark to see, she zoomed back to her aunt, who squawked and squawked about safety and flying and stuff. As she always did, but Auri just ignored her.

Diego

As Diego watched the night sky, he could hear some movement near by him but even as he did hear it, Sapphire speaking up made him up as he quickly looked over at her and lightly chuckled for a moment. He nodded to her question and shook his head "Oh, Nothing much. same thing as mostly every other night really Sappy." He spoke and smiled a little bit at her and he stretched out his wings, extending his wings to full extent.

The White and Gold Macaws were the largest species of Macaw. He was 3.6ft long from the tip of his tail to the top of his head. His wings were a mere 20 inches long, thus his Wing span spread out pretty wide of at least 40 inches. Diego closed up his wings and looked back up out at the sky again. "It is getting late, i'm surprise you're still up." He spoke to Sapphire and looked back over at her.

Emily

Emily could hear the two Macaws talking and lightly smiled before hopping down a few branches and landed near Sapphire and tilted her head. "You two are always up late ya-know?" the red-tailed Hawk spoke to the two Macaws.

Sapphire

Sapphire smiled as Diego chatted to her. They often talked to each other, but Diego was never really open to her. Well, what she perceived as not enough since they were practically living together. When Diego spread his huge wings, Sapphire couldn't help her beak fall open. Sure, she was beautiful and had large colourful wings, but her wings were nothing compared to his species' size.

"Aren't I just full of surprises?" Sapphire smirked back at his remark.

Tupi

Tupi was sleeping pretty well, until some sort of commotion started with the birds. Groggily, he got up and swooped down in a whirl of blue and yellow, despite the darkness.

"Why the chaos? Soomee birds are trying to sleep." Tupi whined. "Oh. Everyone is here. Party, shall we?"

Diego and Emily look over at Tupi as he landed, Diego rolled his eyes at Tupi but chuckled lightly at him. Emily just didn't do anything but watch Tupi and then she looked over at Sapphire, then towards Tupi once more. Diego didn't really say anything against Tupi's remarks but he finally did say something after a little bit. "Sommeee birds get enough sleep during the day to sleep at night. Even though you're suppose to be awake when all the humans come by so they can look at pretty boy~" He teased and laughed lightly as well as Emily.

Tupi

"I am quite fabulous." Tupi commented as he fluttered his feathers and wings. "It would be a shame if they couldn't feast their eyes on moi." he finished with a laugh. And with that, he flew back up to his area and started to nestle into a sleeping position.

"Night guys." he said, followed by a yawn.

Sapphire

"But nothing compared to me!" Sapphire squawked with a grin plastered on her face. She stared up at the stars, wondering what it was that Diego was thinking about before she, Tupi or Emily came. "Night, Tupi. See you tomorrow." Sapphire glanced at Tupi, who looked as if he was already sleeping. She diverted her vision back to Diego, and gave him a smile.

Emily watched Tupi and then looked at the two and slowly backed up speaking up. "I need to head to sleep too. I'll see you two, as well as Tupi in the morning." She finished and then took flight and landed at her little spot higher into the trees and got nestled up.

Diego watched the two leave, nodding as they left and he looked over at Sapphire, and he moved up so he was closer to her, she was obviously shorter than him, by a bit actually, but he smiled at her as he leaned in and whispered. "You're the best looking bird here Sapphire." He smiled at her again as he looked back up at the stars.

Sapphire

If birds could blush, Sapphire would've won a contest. She hopped a little closer to Diego and snuggled with the warmth of his white and gold feathers, looking at the stars with him. "I think you are..." Sapphire managed to say. And it was true. Whilst looking up at the stars, the same question arised, 'what was he thinking about?'. And so she asked, her curiousity was getting the best of her. "What are you thinking about, Diego?"

Diego watched as she snuggled against him and he placed his wing around her, covering her like a blanket and he smiled at her statement and kissed her forehead as he looked back up at the stars again and when she asked the question, he looked down at her, loosing the smile and uncovered her and looked away. "Running away from here really..." He responded honestly, deciding it's best not to really lie right now. "I mean... There's no way I'd ever be able to get outta here... but I really want to just be free..." He continued and then looked back at her. "I'm a rare bird, I have no one... but if just on the off chance that I fly out there... and I happen to meet someone else of the same species of mine? North American, South American it doesn't matter.. I just wish I could meet that certain bird..." He sighed softly "If only they existed." He spoke as he looked back up at the stars, and moved back against her.

Sapphire

Sapphire moved away and looked up at him. "But we can't leave... and aren't you happy here?" she questioned, with a hint of sadness in her voice. Diego wanted to leave? But she thought he was happy at the Zoo, with her, Tupi and Emily - she was, so what was making him sad, just the fact there was none of his kind around? What a silly thought... was it? "Well... I'm sure that one day, you'll find somebird that makes you happy."

She stood up and shook her feathers. "I'll be off now. It is quite late." Sapphire said, and with that, she flew off into her own area and prepared to sleep.

Diego really wanted her to stay... A bird that makes him happy? He though she was one... But he didn't say anything to her as she flew off. He just stated where he was. All alone now on a branch. He then took flight gliding down branch from branch until he reached the grounded and then flew over to a pond of sorts within the cage and took a few bits of water to drink.

They were quick and silent about it.

As Diego was getting water two people had silently entered the cage with a bag at hand and the two people threw the bag over hip and zipped it shut quickly.

Diego made a lot of sudden commotion the causes Emily to snap awake and look down seeing two men holding a bag that was squirming like crazy. She looked at sapphire in her bed then back at the two men getting ready to swoop down and attack them.

Sapphire

With all the commotion, Sapphire stirred awake. That was when she noticed Emily who shot her a look, then back down into the darkness. Sapphire's eyes adjusted, and she noticed a bag shaking all about, as if it had something or someone inside, and two men with cheeky grins plastered on their faces. She groggily, yet silently got up and flew to Emily. "What's happening?" she whispered to the wise eagle. Sapphire glanced up at Tupi, who like most nights after a break in between his sleep, was in a deep sleep, from which he couldn't be woken. Her vision was diverted back to the men. Wait, is that Diego? Where is he?! Sapphire's thoughts ran wild. If that was him, she needed to get those men away.

Emily watched the two men start towards the door speaking in an unknown language. At least to her. She looked at sapphire and looked back at the bag "it sounds like Diego. We need to stop them, before they hurt him!" She spoke starting to get more worried as they drew near the door.

Sapphire

Sapphire nodded. She swooped down and started annoying one of the men, pecking at them and cawing as loud as should could. But her distraction didn't last long until the man she was attempting to annoying swatted her to the ground, as if she were just a puny bug. The wing under her body got damaged, so she couldn't fly up and try again, only squawk and make noises to try make the men let Diego go.

Emily watched the men smack sapphire down to the ground and insrantky screeched and tried to swoop down after the men.

She tried too late s the men shut the door just as Emily was getting to them and she slammed into the door and bounced back onto the ground running her beak as she looked over at sapphire.

"Are you alright Hun?" She asked.

Sapphire

Sapphire nodded. "I-I'm fine... Diego?" she stuttered as she got herself up and shook her feathers. She looked around, and didn't see the men anywhere. But she didn't see Diego either. "Did they get away?" Sapphire blurted out. She had to go get Diego if they had him - somehow, she had to get him back. Sapphire was already preparing herself to go out of her life-long home, and go find Diego.

Emily sighed at sapphire. "We can't loose you too sapphire... Plus there is no way you could keep up with humans getting away from something. You've seen a cop chase before." She spoke and looked at the door and moved next to sapphire to comfort her "I know he means a lot to you. He does to everyone"

Sapphire

"But we can't just... Leave him and let him go!" Sapphire squawked. But she knew it didn't mean anything... He was gone. She couldn't escape, nor could any other bird. Sapphire let out a saddened sigh, and flew up to where she was before all of the commotion. "We can't let any other bird get taken. Tomorrow, the humans will find out he is gone, and bring Diego back to us." She said, it was directed at Emily, but it was more to reassure herself.

Emily smiled at Sapphires reassurance, and she flew up and landed where she was "Sapphire... I know you really cared about him..." She gave her a hug and smiled at her. "He cared for you as well. He's told me.."

The two men with Diego in the bag in their hands escaped the Cincinnati Zoo without being detected. They drove to the Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport where a very old C-46 Commando Cargo plane was waiting at. The Two men stopped near the plane, and got out of the car they were in. They walked with Diego in the bag towards the plane and then got into it. Placing Diego who was still in the bag, in the cage they carefully unzipped the bag and Diego tried his hardest to fling himself out of what he was in, causing the cage to almost fall, but the men grabbed it and placed it back on the shelf.

Diego squawked out hoping that they’d release him, or something that involved him getting home… But with no luck, the men left the cargo hold of the plane, and after about 10 or so minutes the plane began to move, it felt old… then again, it was an old plane anyways. A successful heist of kidnapping a bird became a success as soon as the wheels of the plane lifted off into the air and began to fly south with enough fuel to get to north western Brazil where the Amazon rainforest is.

As the plane was in the air, they passed through a Thunder storm system; although the pilots are good there is nothing you can do about a lightning strike. When the lightning did hit the plane, the entire plane dropped 300 to 500 feet out of the sky causing Diego’s cage to lift off of the boxes slowly, and then slam down hard on the ground, the force of it made him land on his wing roughly and he squawked out in pain as his wing broke from the force. The men were not happy about this when they found Diego and saw his wing. But they continued on to the Amazon.

When the plane landed in the luscious and warm environment of the Amazon Diego was still awake. Although he was very tired, and in a lot of pain, he still just wanted to get away from these people, they were not good people by far…

Diego was loaded onto a truck, the open cage allowed him to view the luscious environment. They drove for about thirty (30) minutes until they reached a clearing in the forest, and stopped. Soon came a man with a white coat that looked right at the cage and smirked, but then looked at his wing and growled sharply. Diego cowered in fear for a moment and watched as the men walked off, yelling at them in the language that the two men also were talking in when they took Diego. He sighed as he looked towards the trees but remained silent after that sigh.

Sapphire

With a frown, Sapphire moved away. Of course, she had to learn that Diego cared for her as much as she did him, now. Because now, she couldn't do anything about it, and could only think about how a perfect chance was ruined...

Aurelia

Yet again, Auri had snuck away from her Aunt's sight and was soaring up above the treetops, feeling the beautiful wind ruffle her feathers in that distinct way she just adored. A storm had occurred earlier, and it rattled the edge of the Amazon. Sure, storms were common due to the tropical nature of the lush forest, but certain storms could still damage the green habitat.

Many birds had reported in injured, and Aurelia along with other caretaker, medical birds had to tend to them. Most were only minor injuries, and took little to no time to heal, yet others were a little more tedious. Aurelia snapped back into reality, when she nearly flew over a clearing in the dense forest. Although Auri was the most adventurous and fun-loving bird, she did know the limits. It was unsafe to fly in a clearing without having a quick look first.

As Auri tilted and spun down back into the foliage, she noticed some large figures somewhere in the clearing, but didn't get a good enough look as to what they were. She flew onto a branch high up in a tree, carefully choosing it so that she was disguised within the leaves, not to be seen.

She sharpened her view and focused on the truck that seemed to have a cage on it. Within the cage, she saw a figure made of pure, snowy white, and striking gold. Auri diverted her vision looking down at herself. Whatever that was, it looked like her. When she looked back, she could tell it was most definitely a bird, and that the bird seemed to be looking right at her, except he obviously want, because she was hidden within the confines of the foliage.

Against her better judgement, Auri dove in a streamline position down to what she could now identify as a male bird. She was silent, trying to get him out before the other figures - who were most likely humans came back. Aurelia didn't look at the bird, and only tried to get the lock off his cage, almost forgetting all about her surroundings, making her extremely vulnerable - at least more than usual, that is.

Diego was looking around the cage. He believed he saw something flying, that was white.... He wasn't sure what it was, maybe just a cockatoo. He looked around the tree line where he saw the figure fly to, and jumped when he saw a bird fly straight down at the truck and land near the lock and tried to get the lock off of the cage. He shook his head a bit thinking he was seeing things. It looked like a white and gold Macaw..? But he thought he was the only one. He wasn't going to believe that all the circumstances allowed him to find another White and Gold Macaw.

But even if she did manage to pick the- Oh. She did it anyways... But he can't fly. His wing is broken. He cannot get anywhere right now. Or for a while.

Aurelia

Auri picked the lock - the more you know, birds can pick locks - and opened the cage door. "What are you waiting for?" She scowled, but once she saw his wing, she knew anyway. Aurelia glanced around, looking for anything that could help them get out of this mess. She wanted to know how the heck he looked like herself. She had been told that there were once other White and Gold Macaws, but she had never seen another one in her lifetime.

They didn't have long before one of the men would make their way over to the rusty old truck to collect this poor bird, so she had to figure something out. Her mind was racing, ideas popping in and out, so much so, she neglected her surroundings.

Diego was kind of sitting still just watching her, covering his wing slightly with the other one as she scowled at him. He watched and listened as the humans started to come closer and got a bit worried. "Why don't you RUN! They're almost here!" He spoke up and looked around seeing a human begin to come into view... God he wished he could fly at this point in time... Why did the plane have to be struck by lightning.

Aurelia

Aurelia snapped back into reality, looking over at the injured male bird. "I can't just leave you!" She snapped, there was no way she was going to just let the only person like her get taken away. Auri walked over, standing in front of the bird, in an almost protective fashion. She spread her wings out, which covered the injured male bird even better, and prepared her to fly if necessary. All Auri needed was for the human not to have a weapon of sorts... That would be really unfortunate.
