This went in all kinds of directions but I think the lesson is clear for everyone here: we all need to give the benefit of the doubt and actively join the next 4 pages of highschool/academy RPs in groups xD

EDIT: I was wondering how the convo shifted from romance players to looking for the right one; I wasn't tagged when it was directed to my post. Sorry about that nerdy tangents I didn't mean to detract from your discussion, it was not my intention to complain about non-responses, I thought not putting ANY context (like obviously reading their rules and seeing whether they put down a certain preference or not first, or how creepy it is to get dropped by someone who demands ERP or nothing at all on this site that has a horrible track record with having pedophiles on it is) would make it clear it's just a passing response/comment and not my own separate post. (((NOT THAT I'M CALLING ROMANCE ROLEPLAYERS THAT. ITS JUST THE CONTEXT OF MY EXPERIENCES)))

I don’t have time for groups (my schedule changes week to week) but I actually don’t mind school/academy roleplaus. Hell I have one school 1x1 going at all times (whenever I get roleplays off the ground).

I think the only thing that frustrates me about them is the lack of organization. It doesn’t even make me mad, it just makes me want to sort of become the shadow GM and organize everything into neat little sections.

When I was searching around 1x1 threads almost everything I found on the first page had this 'MUST include romance' or 'romance is NON-NEGOTIABLE' which was so strange - especially when they also only did fandom roleplays exclusively, so like you mentioned throughout, the shipping priority was just in plain view - and honestly, super duper uncomfortable.
Why is that strange though?

If I'm in the mood for writing a romance roleplay, then requiring that the roleplay actually includes romance makes perfect sense, I mean, you wouldn't call someone trying to run a lovecraftian roleplay requiring that their roleplay include some form of cosmic horror strange, would you?

I think they meant that it is strange so many people demand romance. Especially if you have bad experiences with romance in general.

It would be like if you have an issue with student x teacher pairings and 8 out of 10 roleplay were like MUST have student x teacher pairings.

I mean sure there is nothing wrong with someone wanting that pairing. But it will seem uncomfortable and strange to you.

Put another way being in the minority in terms of interest can be very off putting sometimes. Take school role plays, personally they don’t bother me so I don’t notice if they are very popular or 8 out of 10 roleplays request them.

But for someone who doesn’t like school role plays then the over abundance of requests seems weird.

It’s just down to your perception of things.

Honestly, why is everyone getting so heated about what other people want and prefer?

I'm not heated about what people prefer. Like or dislike romance it doesn't matter. It's the way people who dislike or hate romance talk about the people who do. In this particular case how the users opinion wasn't simply that they dislike romance, but that people who like it are unimaginative and only enjoy being objects of attraction. It dumbs down the users who enjoy, prefer, and ask for romance in a way that no other users of preferred genres are spoken about.

No one makes posts about superhero players and talks about them like they're stupid and lesser for liking it. No they talk about how people abuse super powers, how they fuck with systems, but never that they are unimaginative, lazy, only want to be objects of attraction and getting hated on for wanting character relationships. Romantic things are normal in every genre, but not okay if it also happens to be the core element that helps drive a story.

I don't care if you don't enjoy romance, but I do care when people use "it's my opinion" as a reason to shit on people who do enjoy it. Take your hate somewhere else and leave those users alone. You only have to look at page 1 of this thread and continue from there to see how often people hate on people who enjoy the romance genre or romance as a side element for that matter. From being told you're unimaginative, gross, creepy to being told you're incapable of telling stories and lack skill and craft compared to others because of a genre you happen to enjoy . . . that is shitty and that is what upsets me about most people opinions; they're hurtful I don't like being told blatantly or subtly that I'm stupid for enjoying a genre.

Ahhh, yes.

So over on another site, there was a guy who we'll just name 'K'. K is pretty young, but the site doesn't restrict you based on your age, so they were able to make posts. They mostly did Pokemon RPs (which is what the site is mainly for), but most of their posts (if not all) had no quotations to separate description from dialogue, and there were no breaks to separate who was talking. Granted, they weren't exactly a teenager and I can't expect anyone's grammar and spelling at that age to be like the other more experienced RPers, but it's just difficult to read. Someone from a thread K joined had to leave because of how much they hated K's posts.

All in all, really confusing.

Also, they kept posting spam (like one-word posts when a like suffices) or double to triple-posting when the rules of the site forbids that kind of behavior. Also, autoing a Shadow Claw (I think) to hit their opponent's Pokemon.

Lovely.

I just realized there was a whole argument I completely missed out on here. So I'm going to add my two cents, and hope I don't step on anyone's toes for doing so.

I don't care what the RP has, just as long as the plot is good.

I am pretty realistic in terms of what happens psychologically in terms of relationships and how dynamics work (which is why I despise teacher/student relationships because I have had a staff member at my school get convicted for fooling around with an underage student, so I avoid those the best I can). I have seen the entire spectrum in my 5 years of RPing on different sites when it comes to romance. I have seen people only make a character to play out a fantasy and the entire plot stems around the relationship between that character and whoever is playing their love interest.

Pros and cons about that:
Pro 1: It gets the muse out for exercise.
Pro 2: It gets the creative juices flowing a lot better for some people.
Pro 3: Getting your fantasies out like that is very freeing, which is why we see a lot of people search for RPs that are really specific and have face claims. It can ground them when they are feeling upset or depressed.

Con 1: Sometimes people can go a little too far and put more in their RP based on their fantasies than what was bargained for, putting their partner in an uncomfortable mess.

And that's about it. Honestly, I don't have a problem and I don't care what people's preferences are, just as long as it isn't anything inherently depraved in nature.

I have also seen some amazing worlds where people enter and they do a bit of romance on the side or it becomes a main point in the plot that actually affects the world around them instead of them being in some self-contained bubble.

That isn't to say that a person who prefers one way of playing out romance is inherently lazy or unimaginative. I have created a war-scourged world and a new kind of dragon and many, many characters. But I have also created muses for the sole purpose of playing out a fantasy I have about an anime character I had somehow fallen for (*cough*Escanor*cough*). I wouldn't force this RP onto others, as I would prefer to write in a story, as I do tend to change the plots to make things fit and get my character into that relationship, completely bending the established canon plot for that purpose, but I try to do it in a subtle way and get my character in there to establish a friendship before scooting them on their own deeds and missions that keep them away from the main plot points that affect every canon character.

And most of these muses are Mary Sues, which is why I keep them to myself. XD

So basically, it's more of a spectrum of the kind of people the RPers are and what they are in the mood for. I have seen people who bend the plot to force their characters in and make their partner be a canon character they fantasize about to get the unpredictability, headcanons, and feel for the world they are in. Other times, I have seen people make elaborate worlds or make a well-made AU to host their romance plot. I have seen people do a bit of both.

Also, I have seen superpower RPs where it's basically a power fantasy. Not on this site, but on stuff like Quotev. They abuse their powers to make a canon plot crumble and then we have all sorts of plotholes to fix up. And they won't back down because that character is personal to them and changing them up and therefore rendering their fantasy "useless" in their eyes makes me pity them. That's just the worse of it though. I have seen people (and have done so myself) make characters who were literally just "my dream guy, but one I can control" kind of thing, and they are usually all buff and something you'd see from the Seven Deadly Sins/Nanatsu no Taizai or My Hero Academia/Boku no Hero Academia. When questioned on about what else their characters are, they usually resort to pulling something out of their ass that somehow works (which is what I usually end up doing), pull something out of their ass that doesn't work, or don't know because they literally made their character for one thing and one thing only and they are so two-dimensional (or even just one-dimensional) that it is hard to play with that character. Same can happen for any character meant for romance.

However, the completeness of a character is dependent on the experiences the RPer has. If they don't have a knack for character creation and RPing and only want to fulfill their fantasies to make themselves feel better, they need a partner who can give a lot and teach them (if applicable) on how to make better characters. That isn't a case of being less imaginative though. Maybe a bit lazy, but it all stems down to not knowing what to do, what to go on, and just not having the experience to make anything else that isn't for the glory of the Mary Sue race. XD Based on what I have just said, I have had plenty of personal experience, being myself, who has done something like this.

But that's all. :3 Good day now.

currently malding at how people use aesthetics/fancy coding to hide how little work they've done on their rp

This may be a bit nitpicky, but I dislike being propositioned with filling a role in an existing plot someone has in mind. I like to create with someone, not be assigned something to do; I find often there's already an expectation for how that role acts, and the roleplay just ends up with me feeling like I'm walking on eggshells trying to get the preconceived notion of the character correct. I understand some people enjoy it this way, but I do mention not liking it and still get requests like this occasionally.

Emeraude Emeraude yeah it’s why I try to steer clear of playing canon x oc. I find people have a preconceived idea of how the canon will act to their OC and it is exactly what you described.

your walking on eggshells trying to basically write their character for them. Only from a weird perspective that it’s their version of someone else’s character.

when people ask for someone who doesn’t have triggers in the most belittling way possible.
it’s understandable to not want to play with someone who’s triggers you want to use. a little weird regarding common trigger points, but you know what, sure. avoid people youd harm.
but when you phrase it as your rps not being for the “faint of heart” or act like someone with triggers is a weaker person for having triggers? lol. not just rude, but insanely disrespectful and immediate red flag.

Klutzy characters. They make me irrationally angry because so much of the time it’s like slap stick comedy. As someone who is actually klutzy (whose entire family is klutzy) it is just so unrealistic. And it drives me nuts because I am like “This is not how real humans act.”

Like I get it’s supposed to be comedic relief it just rubs me the wrong way.

Oh, I steer away from fandom roleplays for this reason (among others...I'm a terrible partner for fandom roleplay because I get bored with fandoms SO easily. It takes so much to keep my interest that only the most active fandoms stand a chance). I also just...really dislike being assigned to play someone else's OC. It's called "original character" for a reason, and I really enjoy making my own.

Oh I love fandom role plays. I like expanding on settings though so I tend to steer clear of the OC drama that way.

But yeah I will steer clear of any roleplay where I need to play someone else character.

a quick rant for the morning crowd! after reading through this thread for quite a while, i figured might as well throw my two cents in as well as a coder and lover of "aesthetics" here.

honestly, i find it very frustrating just how much hate coding/aesthetics on here gets. maybe i missed a time on rpn where coders had more elitist attitudes (i made this account in like 2017 but didn't actually start using this site til late 2019) but as far as i have seen from other coders on here, there doesn't seem to be much sentiment like that. i don't think i'm a better writer than any other folks simply because i enjoy my posts looking pretty and nice organization, yet people keep yelling about this idea that we think ourselves better than others. or the idea that "oh, aesthetic ppl on rpn write shit with no substance/put in zero effort and think we won't notice" like huh??? there's plenty of different writing levels across the site, why is it that people just spout hate when we literally just like making posts and characters sheets look nice.
plus, plenty of coders are 100% accommodating and i don't understand how it's the end of the world if a text size is a few px smaller than normal. pages can be zoomed in on. i happily change whatever needs to be changed to ensure readability for my codes, and provide mobile friendly spoilers. i never require codes for any of my group rps. make it make centz luv

I actually really like the aesthetics. While I don't have the patience to use it, I find it rather amazing. :3 I don't know why people think people who code are garbage at RP. It just depends on their skillset. XD

I think it’d be good to specify you heavily code your posts when making or replying to a search thread. I personally not only dislike mismatched aesthetics in roleplay threads (the usual “oh, but you don’t have to code YOUR posts!”) but also get easily distracted by bright colors/images, small text, flashy gifs and non-mobile friendly code.

that's very fair, though i am surprised that happens for folks. personally all of my interest checks or 1x1 search threads are coded, and whenever i have conversations with a potential new rp partner i clarify upfront that i use codes for replies so folks know what to expect from me. i mainly clarify for group rps that people aren't required to use code. but i agree with you, people should explain these things early on.

It can low fidelity low fidelity I had it happen to me. I had to tell my partner to redo their posts because I couldn’t read them. To their credit they were happy to do it. It was a little surprising because they didn’t mention it at any point in the brainstorming.

One of my pet peeves is people who insist on a specific face claim for your character. Or even just list a series of actors/actresses that they want you to pick from.

It’s like A. I don’t like using actor anyway. B. It feels weird for you to tell me how my character looks.

It’s especially weird when I can make up everything else about the character. I can make their name, backstory, personality, (sometimes) gender, sexuality, etc. it’s just they have to look a specific way.
