Out of Character Discussion

Yes and no, Ender! You can use spell singing to heal wounds... But only on another spell singer.

See, "magic" in this setting is actually using a novelty programming technique to control and command nanobots, right? If you have the gift, that means you have a high enough concentration of active nanobots in your body to communicate directly with the RAN terminals - and other nanobots. If a person has few to no nanobots, they're basically "outside the network" and cannot be influenced.

That's where you get into some dark shit like instigating auto-immune disorders and literally hacking another singer's body to destroy itself. There's a reason banned knowledge exists - the Magi were too powerful for their own good, you know?

So no fireballs?

Not from willing them into existence, I will confer with Luddeus about the usage of wands and staves to achieve the same effect. Fire is a chemical reaction needing fuel, oxygen, and heat....

I mean, I know for sure y'all are gonna get lasers at some point, at least.

Ack now I'm wondering if I should redo my character as well. I initially thought this was more medieval so even though I like her being a painter I may need to give her a better skill set. I also thought since characters into their sixties were allowed we didn't all need super practical skill sets. I'll ponder on it. If anyone has any feedback I'm happy to hear it.

@welian do we have a hard deadline yet?

considering either a dark mage type character (got scared for a minute there lol) or some sort of writer/storyteller/other small job

@welian

Hey, sorry for being absent. But reading all these OOC comments has given me an idea.

Fire doesn't work from nothing because it needs fuel, oxygen, etc. But what about electricity? That's just energized electrons in the air discharging the energy in a given direction. Would it be possible for a spellsinger's personal nanites to negatively charge the air around their target while positively charging the air around say... their hands? Or even the air above the target so the spellsinger effectively calls down miniature lighting bolts?

I would like to start the roleplay on Saturday. While I'm not going to impose the strictest deadlines, I'd say you'll be at a disadvantage if you don't have at least a character concept by Saturday.

This sounds awesome.

You just repeated some of the things that have been talked about in the discord server. :P you should stop by some time!

So, for the benefit of those on the forum that dont have Disocrd, is that a yes or no for the zappy powers?

@AngelOfTheMourning - I think your character is lovely since she has a bartering skill, which I think would be very useful since I haven't seen anyone else with it (although I'm still recovering from surgery and haven't read the new ones yet). I think that merchant-ish skill is unique and would be valuable so that she could be the 'face' in transactions.

I have offered to nuke Portia to Welian since I didn't really see the need for two healers. I think having multiple tinkerers and spellsingers would be very cool and useful, though, as well as practical skills like cooking, literacy, brawling, shooting, using bladed or crushing weapons, local lore/knowledge, survival skills, being linguistic (if there are multiple languages), etc. I don't want everyone going crazy because I am probably revising or scrapping Portia. I like playing more "underwhelming" characters and felt spellsinging and healing was sort of overdoing it, so I made her a retired spellsinger and more of a healer. With a small group I personally feel two healers is redundant unless everyone's getting shot up all at once or something, so I volunteered to withdraw/revamp her.

So basically... don't go crazy guys. I think a lot of characters will be useful.

Like everything else, it's a "yes, but". It's more feasible than the fireball, and I was actually just talking to Luddeus about two hours before you posted on the mechanics of the nanobots and what they're capable of.

Oh, I can't even get Discord to display new messages, so I'm not going to be there myself tonight. Hell, with how I feel, I might just go to bed a few hours early.

It just got up and working again for me and several other people. Try now. <3

Thank you for the input @Syrenrei. Unless anyone else is planning to go merchanty I'll push her just slightly more in that direction. She is church educated so that should work nicely.

Go for it! I am not sure what I am going to do with Portia yet but I promise not to infringe on that niche. I've been tossing around a lot of ideas but so far nothing is sticking so it's unlikely I'll be done by Saturday. =( Because I wrote in so much about how Portia became a healer, I'm going to have to completely revamp her background with her skills, motivation, and personality. Blegh. It seems like your character is pretty good at conversing with people on a professional level; perhaps she could be good at negotiation in general too?

I'll probably go that way. I liked Portia quite a bit before so I'm sure you'll come up with something great. Another crafty quite person could be good? Maybe something with tanning and leather work? Or maybe a seamstress? Just throwing out ideas

@AngelOfTheMourning - While I feel like I could write leather working or sewing for a skill (I sew quite a bit in real life and have dappled in leather for my costuming) I'm not sure how I'd fold that into being useful as the RP progresses, you know? She wouldn't really be able to sew and create armour on the fly and I feel like it would be lost as a talent. Mending clothes or repairing leather armor is about as far as I could take either of those and if we're stopping for a day so she can do either of those I am really worried for our party! I could definitely add it as a supplement, but I want to have something besides spell singing that will be actively useful since I wrote in Portia's melancholy hinders her ability to perform certain spell songs accurately and as a consequence she is more reluctant with that talent. I hope that makes sense!

I really wish I could write any form of melee combat competently because I think someone specialized with a longsword, maul, war hammer, etc. would really shine against any potential opponents we have and may integrate well into mech endeavors. Or a brawler!

Rudy has a "beating stick" if that counts. Well, a sturdy rifle, anyway. Same difference.

IMO, the rapier i find quite easy to write out. It is an elegant weapon. Rotate the wrist for a quick parry and shove the pointy end into the bad guy. Easy to look badass while leaving many of the movements to the imagination. The nice thin blade does well in getting through cracks in armor, too.

A teacher could be actively useful. Someone fluent in history and the world amd its lore and legends, and various other subject. A fine way to deliver exopostion in a fun a way. And someone to help with big words when we happen upon an owners manual.

First aid in any non spell song form will be a boon to anyone who does not have nanobots in their system. Since healing magic wont work on them.

Not to mention, whatever skills we have now could easily evolve as we progress creating notable differences. For example, Rudolph and Philip(?) Both have a repairman role. Philip(?) might end up being better with computers and finer electronics while Rudy adapts better to armor and engines and whatnot.

The entire RP is about how bards rule the world when you think about it.
