Realistic or Modern |Zodiac|

Aato

Social(ly-inept) Butterfly
646x404.jpg

After displeasing the Jade Emperor, the animals of the Chinese zodiac are punished. It is decided that their punishment will be to spend 10 years in human bodies, forced to take on the trials and tribulations of the typical person's life all while maintaining their individual animal instincts and abilities.

All of the animals now reside in the same city without knowing they are living among one another. Part of their punishment was total anonymity, being given no clue of each others' human forms, and now only possibly recognizing each others' personalities from being acquainted in their animal lives.

Characters should be starting in the morning, going about their usual weekday routines (we'll say it's a Friday). The animals have been in their new bodies for a month now.

(When referring to each other as zodiacs, they have no distinct names, so they just call each other 'Snake', 'Ox', 'Rabbit', etc.)

"Hidden"
Ian slips into the bright red jacket he’s carrying as he exits his dorm. The morning is a little chilly and the sun is still only halfway above the horizon, but he has a class in half an hour and to be early is to be on time. Or at the very least not late for real. In reality, it only takes a few minutes to get from his dorm to the building where his first class is held, and alone, he takes a seat in one of the surprisingly comfy chairs in the hall. Despite the obscene hour, he’s wide awake and ready for his class, a testament to the consistency with which the original inhabitant of his body walked through life. It’s something the Rooster appreciates very much, and he smiles pleasantly to himself at the luck. Rifling through his bag, Ian pulls out his laptop, hoping to get some more work done on the lab report due for a different class. He settles in and the world focuses down to just his work.

Upon hearing the nosy ringing emitting from the digital alarm clock on the nightstand, which is at his bedside, Andrew lazily arise from upon his bed and moans slightly with his arms outstretched. He then turns to the window on the wall near the other side of his bed and sees the bright rays of the sun shining through the partially-opened blinds of his window. Afterward, he removes his covers and shifts to the end of his bed and slides his feet into his slippers and grabs his towel and his iPad, before heading out of his bedroom door. He walks down the hallway to enter into the bathroom and hangs his towel of the pole which holds up the shower curtain and removes his slippers and sleepwear from off of him in order to take a shower. Before stepping into the bathtub, he plays classical orchestral music from his iPad and turn the volume until it reaches the maximum, so he can hear it nicely turn through the loud sounds of the water coming from the shower.

After about 15 minutes, he shuts off the water and dries his body off in the tub, drying his feet last before exiting the tub, as to not drip unnecessary water onto the floor, and then, after girding his waist with the red towel hanging on the pole, he leaves from the bathroom into the walk. He heads into the room of his brother, Simon, whose room resonates with the sound of the vibration coming from his iPod at his side. Andrew picks up Simon's phone to turn off the alarm and shakes his brother awake. Simon groans to turn his head, but Andrew pulls off Simon's blankets and turns on the room light. Simon squints his eyes at Andrew and rubs his eyes. "Turn that off," he says. Andrew simply turns away and says to his irritated sibling, "You will be able to do that yourself if you get up."

He then re-enters into his room and changes into his clothing for the day. Something simple and casual, such as a white shirt cover below the shoulder with dark blue stripes and navy blue jeans, along with a pair of black socks. After changing into his clothes, he goes downstairs to make breakfast. As he was wont, he goes into the refrigerator to take out four plastic packages, each with a different type of "berry," raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries; as well as a frozen banana, grapes, and vanilla yoghurt, in order to make a smoothie. He loved to drink smoothies; it was his favorite drink besides grape juice, his first, and lemonade, his second. He puts ingredients into the blender with a few ice cubes and turns on the blender. After the smoothie is the right consistency, he pours the smoothie into two average-sized glass: one for him, and the other for his brother. He takes a sip of the cup of deliciousness. "Mmmmm...." he says, before setting his cup on the table. He then takes out some milk sets on the table, along with a bowl, spoon, and box of wheat square cereal and prepares it.

Finally, he puts two pieces of honey wheat bread into their black toaster and waits for it to pop. When it does, he takes it and immediately butters it so the butter with melt on the bread with the heat leftover and then sets it on a small plate, which he places next to his bowl of cereal and behind his smoothie. When everything is set, he takes out his phone to watch an episode of a show he likes to watch as he eats his nutritiously beneficial breakfast. He doesn't have class today, so he decides to head out to the park before going to his job at the near by cafe bakery in the afternoon.

Chase Lofman

Chase slipped down the stairs, trying not to make any of his family members aware of his presence. Unfortunately, the effort was useless, as Chase noticed his parents and brother already in the kitchen. His brother was stuffing his face with cereal, and Chase frowned as he noticed that he was eating the last of it.

“Would you mind picking up a few things from the store on your way home?” his mother greeted. She handed a small piece of paper to Chase without waiting for an answer.

“Can’t you get Will to do it?” Chase suggested.

“What, have you got something better to do?” his mother countered. Chase sighed as his older brother smirked. Will barely left the house, and it would make much more sense for him to pick up groceries if they were needed before the end of the day. And while Chase didn’t really have Friday night plans, he’d thought it might be nice to stop by the local cafe after work- maybe work on some writing. So much for that idea.

The young man grabbed a messenger bag and headed out the door for work. The office would still be busy, but less so than the beginning of a week. Either way, Chase didn’t really mind the long hours. It was a lot of scheduling meetings, responding emails, writing letters, making phone calls, and skimming manuscripts every now and then, but there was nowhere else he’d rather be at the moment. Working kept him out of his house, and that was the most important part.

Chase had barely been at work for an hour when his stomach started growling. When had he gotten so hungry? Although he didn’t have a lot for breakfast, he should be used to that by now. Yet recently he found himself wanting to eat all the time, and he couldn’t remember when it started. He grabbed a muffin from his bag, hurriedly unwrapping the confection and stuffing it in his mouth …right as his supervisor approached the desk.

“I hope you’re going to finish that before phoning my author’s agent,” she said disdainfully. Chase nodded but at least knew better than to speak with his mouth full. He already doubted that his supervisor actually liked him and didn’t want to make things worse by spitting muffin crumbs at her. The woman gave him a hard stare before placing a stack of papers on his desk and retreating to her office.

Raquel Rivera

Raquel rolled her head around, then stretched her arms and legs. She pressed play on her iPod and then pressed the elevator call button. Before it arrived, she changed her mind and took the stairs down to the first level of the apartment complex. She nodded at the older man who was passing by before breaking into a jog. It was still early morning before the rush of people trying to get to work, and she still had three hours before her Friday lecture.

She jogged down the sidewalk, avoiding cracks in the pavement and any other pedestrians on the sidewalk. She ran to the park, following the path around the pond where ducks splashed in the shallow water. Raquel smiled as she watched the ducklings flapping about. When she got back to the park entrance, she slowed to a walk, allowing herself to cool off as she checked her time. Raquel wasn’t training for anything in particular, but it was always nice to see improvement.

She went back up to her apartment and prepared to shower off. Her roommate greeted her with a “Good morning” before getting ready for her own daily activities. Raquel nodded and responded with her own greeting, pulling her headphones out of her ears. She then grabbed an apple off the table, tossing it back and forth between her hands a few times before taking a bite. Raquel wasn’t sure if she bought into that “apple a day” saying, but they were definitely tasty regardless.

“Hey I’m headed out, but there’s this party tonight and you should come with me,” Raquel’s roommate said.

“Can’t, sorry. I have to go to my mom’s and help out,” the taller girl replied with a frown.

“Oh yeah. That sucks. I guess I’ll see you around then.” The other girl waved and then left. Raquel sighed and started the shower. It would be fun to have a night on the town, but she doubted it would really happen anytime soon. It had been a battle to convince her mom to let her go to college in the first place.

Raquel walked onto the campus, waving and exchanging a few words with some classmates that passed by her. She took her seat in the lecture hall, giving a polite smile and handing over a piece of paper when the person next to her asked if she had any.

Dog was an early riser, so just as well, he did the same in his new body. His internal clock kept him on schedule, so sans an alarm, Sobaka woke and uncurled from the fetal position he had slept in. The first thing he always did after stepping out of bed was stretch out every part of his body before following it up with a yawn and shaking out his hair. He then paid his respects to the new posters plastered on the walls of his room. He doubled his fingers and kissed them, first pressing them on the image of Jennifer Lopez, and then Nicki Minaj. Right now, those were his only two, but he had only existed in this world for a month, so he was sure that in the time he had left here, he'd find more rumps in need of his undying appreciation. Hell, this was supposed to be the emperor's idea of punishment, but Dog was only enjoying himself.

Sobaka's one bedroom apartment was small, so he pretty much walked out of his bedroom into the living room. He headed for the kitchen - simply separated from the rest of the room by a bar - and looked around, swiftly deciding what he'd eat. Of course, "everything" popped into his head, but he had learned the hard way that it wasn't possible... and some of his more-or-less "disgusting" habits from his animal life, well, he no longer had the stomach for. So, he pulled a bowl from the cabinet and a box of cereal from atop the refrigerator and poured himself a large bowl of dry cereal. (Milk, he also found out the hard way, didn't sit well with him either.) The quantity in the bowl seemed ridiculous, even for breakfast, but he easily downed it in seconds, a third done by the time he made it to the chair in his living room.

Almost as though it knew he had finished eating just a moment ago, Sobaka perked at the sound of his phone going off. He sprang up, leaving the bowl in his place on the floor, and went for his room. He immediately grabbed up the phone, shutting off the alarm, then began changing for his morning exercise. He pulled on a shiny pair of athletic shorts, a red tanktop (however, he thought it was gray), pulled on his sneakers, and lastly tied his hair out of his face into a messy topknot that didn't fit all of his hair. Grabbing his phone, he checked it once more, being sure of the time and estimating just how many laps he could run. It may have been Friday, but he still had work. Those pups weren't going to train themselves.

Sobaka placed his phone in his pocket then grabbed his keys and wallet from the dresser top to do the same. He then left his room and headed out of the apartment, being sure he locked the door. The place was small and he didn't have much, but you could never be too safe. Someone might want something, even if just to knock him over the head when he came back then steal all his food... and he couldn't have that.

Luckily, he didn't live too far up in his apartment building, being on the third floor. While there was an elevator, he preferred taking the steps. He considered them a warm up, even if he was simply going down. As soon as he made it outside, he took in a deep breath, feeling his chest rise and puff, before slowly letting it out. Air in the city wasn't particularly fresh, but, hey, it beat inside air any day. Plus, it was morning, so it hadn't gotten too heavy yet. Pulling out his phone, he took one more glance at the time before tucking it away again and jogging to the park. He had time for about three laps before he'd need to go home, rest, then get ready for work.

Kody woke up in the middle of a mound of stuffed rabbits. Ah, to be woken by a form you no longer had. Kody sat up and yawned, stretching his arms above his head in a luxurious stretch. Perhaps his favorite part about this human form was how well he could actually stretch his limbs. Though he did miss the cute little paws.

Well, it was time to go to work. Kody liked the Cottontail Cafe, and not just because of the name. It didn't serve any meat, which was totally in his diet range, but the atmosphere was so cheerful and amiable, it was the perfect fit for him. Too bad he couldn't cook anything, or he would probably be making more money than he already was.

As he got ready to go to work, he couldn't help but notice how lonely his apartment was. Maybe it was a fluke, but he hadn't woken up with some other identity when the Emperor had decided to put him in this human form. He didn't have a family or super close friends... It was a bit lonely.

No matter! He had some waiter-ing to do! (Hm, maybe he'd tell his boss about that new verb...)

~ ~ ~

Kody got right to serving customers as soon as he walked in the door. A few of them were regulars and called him over just to talk. That was the best part about this job. So many people came here purely for socializing with him and his coworkers, and that was perhaps the best part about the atmosphere.

Still, Kody couldn't help but wonder where his fellow Zodiac animals were...
