This thread is a well of information regarding the lore of Zodiac | Umbra.

DIRECTORY​

ZODIACS​

The primary inhabitants of the underworld "Limbo". Zodiacs are the souls of deceased lifeforms denied their final rest and sentenced to tread the undead wasteland for an eternity. These beings have tremendous power, often beyond human understanding. As a trade-off, Zodiacs need Life force to survive. It is what keeps their mind from fully decaying and turning into a Hollow. Zodiacs obtain life force by forming a contract with a suitable Host and sapping that energy through their connection. In the past most Zodiacs were cooperative. In their deal with their chosen host, the Zodiacs would occasionally remind their Host to uphold their end of the deal, which was usually finishing what a Zodiac had started during their time as living being. In the present era, a large majority of Zodiacs have become completely dismissive to their Host's wishes, and forcefully possesses the body of the Host without warning. The cause is unknown.

As it currently stands, Zodiacs are invisible to normal human beings. They can only be seen by Hosts and other Zodiacs. Similarly, Zodiacs cannot directly influence the real world outside of disrupting with electricity.

HOSTS​

Simply put, Hosts are humans with two souls. One being their own, and the second belonging to a Zodiac they have signed a contract with. In every contract, Hosts are granted a fraction of their Zodiac's power to be used in the real world at the cost of adhering to that Zodiac's bidding. Today, most Hosts are extremely hostile and have lost all concept of human society, therefore are prone to randomly attacking people. In the past, hosts easily co-existed with humanity and even worked alongside the Dominion in an effort to keep the supernatural a secret. The existence of hosts dates back thousands of years ago. Some hosts openly displayed their power, seen as men and women of god, or even claiming to be god themselves. Zodiacs on the other hand, remained non-existence in the eyes of the living.

DOMINION​

The Domnion originated from a mob of angry townspeople who retaliated against witches of dark magic, or "hosts" as we know of them. Initially a male-only organization, the Dominion was much akin to the current Dominion. Public executions by their hand was seen as a protective method for the rest of the people. These men often burned hosts tied to trees, or stoned to death first, then burned. This way of existence over time became inhumane, the once brutal process of keeping the people safe had changed. Over time, the organization grew in numbers, new minds with fresh perspectives on the matter of the supernatural ultimately changed the Dominion for the better as they grew to hide in secrecy and work alongside like-minded hosts to keep back a common enemy: Hollows.

The Dominion today have mostly returned to their ways of culling. They use whatever knowledge they forcefully extract from Hosts to help combat them and rid them of the world for good. Their structure is very similiar to that of a private military organization, well equipped with vehicles, weapons and devices built to deal with superhuman problems. Their sight is a welcome one to the ever growing instability that are the Hosts.

HOLLOWS​

The inevitable end for every Zodiac, providing they aren't killed a second time for other reasons. Hollows are deformed Zodiacs, their minds far too decayed to conduct rational thought and reasoning. Hollowification is the process of time catching up to a Zodiac's soul. A beneficial contract slows this down to a crawl, but doesn't ultimately stop it. It is what some see as a curse or a penalty. All Hollows are stripped of their abilities and reduced to using tooth and claw.

Hollows feed on life energy. Their ravenous hunger guiding them into the living world to feast on unsuspecting victims. In the past, this was a major issue. Hollows were considered a serious threat to humanity's survival until they were all sealed away into Limbo.
