23 Moons

Clan:
Riverclan

Rank:
Warrior

Alias:
Auburnkit, Auburnpaw

Kin:
Amberheart {Mother}, Snakefang {Father}, Rosepool {Sister}, Thistlekit {Brother - Deceased}

Eye Color:
Copper

Pelt Color:
Long red, tabby fur with a patch of soft white under his chin

Bio:
Born in Riverclan during the winter, Auburnfeather faced his first challenges of survival. It was a particularly harsh winter, claiming the life of the tom cat's brother, Thistlekit at hardly a moon old. He grew up fairly close to his sister because of this, the two of them assigned to the same mentor and earning their warrior names together. It was a border scuffle over stolen prey that finely delegated his clanmate's view. Receiving his warrior name was probably the young cat's proudest moment. He hasn't always had it easy trying to fit in among his home, though. Auburnfeather's thick and long hair is a little out of the ordinary for Riverclan cats, however it does not effect his ability to swim. He's been described as stubborn, but fiercely loyal all the same. Auburnfeather overall has a very passive personality, and is arguably one of more laid back warrior's of his clan. Despite this, he is force to be reckoned with when the opportunity arises. His speed and calculating mind make him respected among clanmates. While he's never backed away from a fight, Auburnfeather would rather de-escalate a situation if he can. He believes that most things can be fixed without violence.

Dawnclaw

Gender
Female

Age
20 Moons

Clan
Shadowclan

Rank
Warrior

Kin
Frostheart - Mother
Ashstripe - Father (Deceased)
Birdeye - Brother
Cedartuft - Brother

Appearance
Dawnclaw is quite a small cat for her age. She’s got small paws, and a rather short fluffy tail. She’s a pretty spotted cat, that fits into her environment rather well.

Personality
Dawnclaw is a fierce, loyal Shadowclan cat that would do absolutely anything to protect her clan. She can also be soft spoken however, towards clanmates, and especially her littermates. Sometimes, she’ll snap at a clanmate, but its clear she’s loyal. She’s a sarcastic cat, who tends to get on her other clanmates nerves at times. It doesn’t really bother her how much she gets on their nerves however, because she always makes it up to them in battle.

Bio
Dawnclaw grew up in Shadowclan. As a kit, she’d gotten whitecough, and it almost lead to greencough. Her medicine cat had been lucky to get such a young kit back to full health before it got worse. As a kit, she tended to stay close to her littermates and observe things. She enjoyed play fights with them, and although she was the smallest, she always tended to win them. As an apprentice she learned well, and fast. She seemed like a skilled fighter, and earned her warrior name after a battle with Windclan. She’d been told she fought like a real warrior. Getting her warrior name was a huge achievement for the she cat. Her littermates got their warrior names with her, and soon the three were doing hunting patrols and border patrols together.

Sparrowtail. That darn medicine cat had been casting Auburnfeather sideways glances all day. Subconsciously, the tom cat shook his head, averting his gaze from the petite brown she-cat who sat outside of the Medicine Den with her tail curled protectively around her paws. She watched the warrior with a piercing green stare, even as their gazes met across camp. Auburnfeather couldn't wrap his head around it. Perhaps it was something he said in passing? It wasn't as though he wasn't pulling his own weight. Sure, tensions were high with Shadowclan and as the fear of an impending war loomed overhead, Auburnfeather had picked up his fair share of extra patrols. He couldn't tell you what exactly started the rivalry between Riverclan and Shadowclan, but it had happened. But he was certain that it wasn't particularly anyone's fault. At the center of it all, was the mere lack of prey, forcing them further and further from their own borders.

Unable to shake away the uncertainty Sparrowtail's gaze spread through him like fire, he abandoned the idea of lunch. Shoulder's hunched, Auburnfeather trotted towards the bracken tunnel that masked the center of his home. The medicine cat rose to her paws as the warrior passed, huffing softly as she made a beeline towards the leader's den. Rowanstar appeared to have to waiting for her, welcoming her into his den without so much a word. It all seemed strange to Auburnfeather, but what did he know about the methods of leading. The red tom cat's whiskers twitched, but he turned his attention elsewhere, sliding through the tunnel without making a sound.

His toes sank into the warm sand as he bounded forward, his destination the slow moving river that his clan was best known for. The summer breeze was comforting at least, ruffling his long fur as he moved. The river wasn't far from camp, and sat just along the northern border of their territory. He could see it up ahead, the soft blue gleam of the water glinting in the sun's brilliant rays. Auburnfeather closed the distance in a few well balanced leaps, hunching down to lap at the cool water. As he drank, the sound of tiny paws caught his attention. He slowly lifted his muzzle, water droplets glistening off the tom's whiskers. Fish were few and far between these days and the clan had been forced to extend their pallets when they could, settling for the squirrel and rabbit that the other clans usually feasted on. This could be good, Auburnfeather thought, a chance to show them I'm doing my part.

It was then he saw it, the flash of brown and white as the rabbit broke from the cover of the bush it had been hiding. Admittedly, it caught Auburnfeather by surprise, causing his reaction to look a bit clumsy to anyone who may or may not have been watching. He recovered quickly though, kicking up the soft sand of the bank as the warrior charged after his prey. The foliage blew by him in a blur as he gained on the rabbit. Unfortunately, the hunter didn't have enough time as he thought. The smell of the Shadowclan border hit his nose in a burst, and like an automatic reaction, he slowed to a halt just shy of the border. Auburnfeather could smell the fresh scent of Shadowclan warriors lingering in the air, and the adrenaline of the hunt suddenly replaced with a cautious and defensive fear. He hadn't crossed the border but with high tensions, that might not matter.

Auburnfeather backed up a few steps, his copper eyes darting back and forth through the clearing. Turning and leaving might send the wrong message, but standing his ground may also be viewed the wrong way. He felt trapped, but maybe he had just missed the patrol. He took a deep breath and waited, praying to Starclan that whatever happened next wouldn't be trouble.

Dawnclaw

“Dawnclaw! Your on border patrol with Birdeye and Ashpaw.” Gorsefur, Shadowclan’s deputy, had interrupted the she cats thoughts. Dawn law lifted her head and dipped it respectfully to the deputy, “You there will patrol the Riverclan border, keep on the look out, tensions are high.” Gorsefur reminded the three. With that, Dawnclaw hurried toward the entrance of camp, Birdeye and Ashpaw following. She was caught a bit off guard when she heard Hollyflower, the medicine cat call her.

Dawnclaw was a bit surprised to hear her call, but stopped in her tracks and turned as the medicine cat ran over. “Wait for my at the entrance to camp, I’ll be along soon.” Dawnclaw told Birdeye who ran on ahead. She then turned her attention back to the medicine cat, breathing in her warm scent. “Yes, Hollyflower?” Dawnclaw asked, her head tilting to the side a slight bit. “I just wanted to say be careful going so close to Riverclan territory.” She said softly. “Tensions are high.” Dawnclaw hesitated, before dipping her head to the she cat. She then turn and took off, feeling Hollyflower’s eyes burning into her with curiosity. When Dawnclaw looked back, Hollyflower was hurrying to Brackenstar’s den.

Dawnclaw shook her head lightly, before hurrying out of the camp. She found Birdeye and Ashpaw waiting for her. “What was that all about?” Her littermate asked as they began to walk toward their boarder. Dawnclaw hesitated a moment, “Hollyflower was just telling me to be careful, as tensions are high.” She informed him. He nodded slightly in understanding. “Ashpaw, what can you smell?” Birdeye asked the apprentice. Dawnclaw watched him separate his mouth before answering his mentor, “A frog.” He said. “Very well!” Birdeye purred.

Birdeye had gotten an apprentice before his sister, and although Dawnclaw had been rather jealous, she learned to not mind much. As they made it closer to the boarder, Dawnclaw saw an unfamiliar cat in view. “What’s a single Riverclan cat doing so close to the border?” She growled under her breath, her eyes narrowing as the patrol made their way closer.

When they made it to the border, Dawnclaw heard Ashpaw growl. She flicked her tail, to signal him to lay off a moment. “Why are you so close to the border alone?” She asked the Riverclan cat rather sharply. Are they planning an attack right now? She asked herself. Using this cat to lead the patrol? She shivered slightly at the thought, but pushed it away a moment later. “Well?” She growled, when the Riverclan cat didn’t answer. It took her a moment, but soon she recognized him as Auburnfeather, a tom she’d seen at a ton of gatherings.

Auburnfeather

Ashpaw's growl pierced the warrior's ears, and for a split second Auburnfeather felt his muscles tense before he realized the young cat was no older than an apprentice. His steady gaze fell upon Dawnclaw then as she spoke, a calmness clear in his express despite the harshness that clipped her tone. Slowly, he sat back on his haunches, letting his bushy tail sweep across his paws. It was a risky move, but one that also was meant convey he meant no harm. Auburnfeather was quiet for a moment, studying the pretty little she-cat he had seen before at gatherings. While they were a time for peace, he had come to realize that he had never made the attempt to get to know Dawnclaw, but he had always in his own way, admired her from a far. For her beauty yes, but also the strength that the Shadowclan warrior radiated. It had captivated him from the moment he saw her, probably no older than Ashpaw himself at the time, stuck his mentor Reedclaw like glue at that very first gathering he was allowed to attend.

"My apologies," Auburnfeather murmured, his tone smooth like velvet despite the uncertainly he felt flowing through his veins. One wrong move, he thought, and I'm severely outnumbered here. His whiskers twitched, pausing momentarily before his jaws parted to speak again. "But, I didn't cross your boarder. Just lost a rabbit to the boundary, and I didn't want a misunderstanding." Of course, he heard it. The Shadowclan cats heard it. Heard how much it sounded like an excuse or mockery, but it was the truth and the tom cat was sticking to gut. For whatever the reason, he knew that Dawnclaw wouldn't attack him. Nor would she allow the rest of them to cause mayhem.

"If there's a problem, though." Auburnfeather mewed, letting the thought trail away as the shrill voice of his sister split the air.

"AUBURNFEATHER!" Rosepool called, and he didn't have to turn around to know that she was approaching at a quick speed. He could picture her already, dark red fur standing on edge and yellow eyes blazing. It was the sound of other pawsteps, however, that startled him, made the fur on the back of his neck begin to bristle. His litter-mate had a notorious temper, and he could feel the situation slipping through his paws. Quickly, he got, squaring himself between the Dawnclaw and her clanmates and turning to face his own.

"Stop," He demanded coolly, meeting his sister's startled gaze as she skidding to a halt. Wolfpelt and his apprentice Sparkpaw were in tow, too focused on the Shadowclan cats to really be listening. "There's no trouble here, don't create it." He warned his fellow warriors, turning his head to look back at Dawnclaw apologetically. "I can explain it to Brackenstar and Rowanstar if needed. We don't need this, and neither do you." The thought of going to Shadowclan scared him more than he'd ever admit, but the words had slipped out before he could stop them. "It's the least I could do."

Dawnclaw

Dawnclaw watched as the warrior still didn’t answer her after she questioned him again. She gave him a moment to speak up, as a growl once more formed in Ashpaw’s throat. Dawnclaw was luckily close enough to flick his ear with her tail as Auburnfeather finally spoke up. Dawnclaw didn’t believe a word he said next, but dipped her head respectfully. Maybe that did actually happen, she didn’t want to jump to conclusions and start a fight that might not need to happen. She knew if her other littermate Cedartuft was here, the poor Riverclan cat would’ve already been torn to shreds, no matter what Dawnclaw said to stop him.

Dawnclaw watched as a patrol of three Riverclan cats came racing toward the border. She flexed her claws, getting ready to attack if the Riverclan cats made one wrong move. She was a fair cat at times, but she wouldn’t stand still and let an enemy patrol claw her patrol to shreds. She was surprised when Auburnfeather ordered the cats to stop. A new respect for the Riverclan cat shot through Dawnclaw’s gaze as she watched Auburnfeather turn back to her patrol.

“Yes, you probably should explain.” She decided after a moment. “I would say we should just continue on with our patrol and forget this, but we’ve got some loud, exaggerated apprentices.” She said, her eyes wandering over to Ashpaw, who flicked his tail, his head dropping a slight bit. Dawnclaw looked back to Auburnfeather, “The rest of your clanmates will not enter Shadowclan territory. My patrol will take you to Brackenstar so you can explain the misunderstanding.” She said simply with a nod. Her eyes wandered to the Riverclan patrol, and she thought Rosepool was about to protest, when Dawnclaw gave her a sharp glare.

Dawnclaw was pleased to see she got through to her and gestured for Auburnfeather to cross the border. Birdeye watched closely, as Dawnclaw began leading the other three back to the camp. He then hurried over to Dawnclaw, “Why should we bring him back to Brackenstar to explain, when we can just explain?” He asked. Dawnclaw looked down to Ashpaw, “Because knowing that one, he’ll have Brackenstar thinking Auburnfeather stole prey, and then Brackenstar will attack Riverclan and that would just be another unnecessary fight.” She said simply. Birdeye dipped his head in understanding.

It didn’t take long for them to get back to camp. When they did, all eyes fell upon them with curiosity. She meant Hollyflower’s gaze, who’s eyes were burning straight into Dawnclaw and Auburnfeather. “Dawnclaw, what’s going on?” That was Brackenstar’s voice she heard as she turned to met his gaze. Dawnclaw all of a sudden felt rather mouse brained. Maybe Birdeye was right, there was no need to bring Auburnfeather back to camp over something as silly as this. “Well-,” Dawnclaw began then stopped, dropping her head a slight bit in discouragement. The she cat had never shown such lack of encouragement, especially in front of an enemy.

Auburnfeather

Mousebrain. I'm such a mousebrain.

Auburnfeather thought, rolling his eyes inwardly as he crossed the boarder with cautious steps. They could turn on him at any moment, especially in the heart of their territory. He might stand a chance at getting away from the patrol, but the entire clan? Even he wasn't naive enough to believe that that was even remotely possible. Hesitantly at first, he kept stride with Dawnclaw and the rest of the patrol, trying not to allow his uncertainly to show on his face. For the most part, he seemed relaxed and sturdy on the surface, although he would be lying to say that his heart didn't skip a beat as he followed them into the very heart of Shadowclan's camp. He could feel the angry and hostile stares from the other warriors burning into his skin.

Auburnfeather met Brackenstar's gaze, dipping his head in a respectful gesture. The medicine cat though, stole his attention quicker than he realized. He had seen that same look on Hollyfeather's face in his own home, reflected in Sparrowtail's sideways glaces. He knew that the she-cats were most likely friends, traveling to moonstone when necessary, but this felt different. Like they knew something the rest of the clan's didn't. The thought seemed ridiculous and Auburnfeather tore his gaze away to focus on the more prominent issue at hand. The tabby tom seemed surprised that Dawnclaw was suddenly at a loss for words, she had also advocated the idea, but now he wasn't so sure they were right in their endeavors.

Keeping his head slightly bowed, he addressed the leader. "It's my fault," he chimed in, tail swaying low behind him. Auburnfeather was nervous now, half expecting to be attacked. His copper eyes swooped around, startled at the scene he had unknowingly caused, ashamed to see queens ushering their little ones back inside their dens. "You know food is scarce, Brackenstar. I was hunting rabbit, clearly out of my element. I got close to your border, but I did not cross." He emphasized, tilting his head towards Dawnclaw. "We don't want any trouble. Riverclan has not stolen from you, we just wanted to make sure that there was no misunderstanding." The tom's eyes narrowed as he heard hushed whispering erupt from the other clan cats, and finally he lifted his head to meet Brackenstar head on.

"Don't fault your warriors. We don't need to fight - " He abruptly feel silent, peeking a glance at Dawnclaw. This was a mistake, he had over spoken. Over stepped his boundaries. And when Rowanstar found out, he was dead either way. He could see his leader rally the patrols, waiting for him to return. What if Shadowclan made him stay? They had lead him to the heart of Shadowclan territory, and if his own clan ever wanted to counter, he would be the only one able to lead them here. Auburnfeather drew his ears back at the thought, it made his tummy churn.

"Tell me how we can resolve this." Auburnfeather mused softly.

Dawnclaw

Dawnclaw met his leaders gaze as Auburnfeather spoke. Brackenstar hesitated a moment, “It’s no harm if you didn’t cross the border.” He said after a moment. This Riverclan cat seemed respectable enough, even with tensions so high. “This won’t be mentioned again, he didn’t steal prey.” The Shadowclan leader decided, glancing around at all the circling cats. “Just try to be a bit more careful next to, because we won’t be so nice.” Brackenstar said, narrowing his eyes at the Riverclan cat. On their territory or not, stealing prey or not, he got to close to the boundaries, it was fair enough.

Brackenstar’s eyes scanned the clearly before finally landing on Dawnclaw, “Dawnclaw, please bring this Riverclan cat back to the border.” He ordered. Dawnclaw lifted her head, looking over to Hollyflower for a moment before nodding, “Very well, Brackenstar.” She said after a moment. Her eyes wandered to Hollyflower again who narrowed her eyes slightly. Dawnclaw gave her a confused look before pushing her out of her mind and turning to the Riverclan cat. She flicked her tail, gesturing for him to follow her out of camp.

Dawnclaw stayed rather quiet as they walked back. She expected that to go a bit more... harsh, considering how high the two clan tensions were. “You’re lucky you know?” Dawnclaw asked after a long silence. “Brackenstar is fair and wise, but not usually with tensions as high as they are.” She commented. She didn’t bother turning to look at the Riverclan cat as she kept walking, the trees brushing her fur as she walked. She enjoyed the shade the trees were offering, she always felt more safe in the shelter of them.

When they made it to the Riverclan border, Dawnclaw looked at Auburnfeather for the first time their whole walk. Her eyes were a lot softer then when they’d crossed paths the first time. “Never come that close to Shadowclan territory again, because trust me, if any Shadowclan cat see’s you, you’ll be crow food.” She told him, her eyes growing slightly as she spoke. The two clans rivalry seemed foolish to her. They’d worked together through so much, and now everything they’d worked for was slowly falling apart.

Auburnfeather

The Riverclan tom let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding. Relief washed over him so heavily, it left him momentarily weak in the paws. Without a word, Auburnfeather bowed to his head to Brackenstar, a silent thank you. He remained quiet, following Dawnclaw out of the camp with a last glance thrown over shoulder to see the expression plastered across the medicine cat's face. The tom hurried after Dawnclaw, eager to be away from the rest of her clan.

The silence bothered him and while he wrecked his brain trying to come up with something to say, he settled on the silence. Dawnclaw's demeanor had shifted, and in all reality, Auburnfeather thought it best not to press his luck. Shadowclan felt foreign and cold to him, but at the same time he could see it being home with the right company. His pawsteps were light and careful, matching the she-cat step for step as they neared the border. Although she wouldn't look at him, Auburnfeather watched her with a gentle curiosity. How could someone who was meant to be his enemy be so kind? Perhaps this was all wrong, but he knew that if push came to shove, Auburnfeather would not be able to fight her. Not even for his own clan.

And then her voice broke his trance, chased away his thoughts without much effort. "I'm not lucky," He chuckled, whiskers twitching in dry amusement. "Don't you find this strange?" Auburnfeather pushed, tilting his head to meet her wondrous gaze. Though he didn't elaborate, he turned swiftly and stepped over the boarder, still managing to keep in close proximity to Dawnclaw. "I should have already been crowfood, but here I am." He sounded pleasant enough, but there was a clear distraction radiating in his fiery eyes. "I don't want a war, and I get the feeling you don't either."

His clan was waiting for him, he knew, but Auburnfeather wanted to avoid that scrutiny as long as possible. Rosepool was bound to have hyped his clanmates up, and in all honesty, he didn't want to deal with it. He'd had his fair share of excitement to be content for the evening. "It will happen though." Auburnfeather stated simply, tail twitching behind him.

"It wont - " A she-cat's voice interrupted. She slid from the shadows, smelling so strongly of herbs, there was no doubt who she was. Sparrowtail, the medicine cat of Riverclan. She looked around nervously, making sure that no one else was listening. "You two, you must stop it. I've tried to tell Rowanstar, but he's afraid to lose you if it comes to a fight. I've seen it, dawn's shadow embracing the red feather in the river. You must come together," She insisted, butting up against Auburnfeather at the border and coming nose to nose with Dawnclaw. "You both must find new land for all of us, or the clans will crumple. Riverclan and Shadowclan will fall first in battle, and without the order, Thunderclan and Windclan will follow our demise."

Dawnclaw

Dawnclaw‘s nose twitched slightly, “Wars very unnecessary.” She mumbled after a moments pause. The two clans couldn’t come upon war, it would be far to chaotic. Dawnclaw had a hard enough time waking up in the morning and feeling the tension between the two clans that shared a border. With prey being so scarce, tensions grew even higher. Dawnclaw wondered if it was the same with Windclan and Thunderclan, if they were straying onto each other’s territories, stealing prey. It was possible. But, was it really possible for so much chaos to be going on in the forest at once?

Dawnclaw nodded, it would probably happen, and she knew it. Her thoughts were cut off by an unfamiliar she cats voice however. She lifted her head, and it wasn’t hard to tell it was the Riverclan medicine cat. She casted a glance at Auburnfeather as she began to speak. She listened to the medicine cats words, her eyes narrowing slightly. Did Hollyflower know this as well? Is that why she was always closely watching Dawnclaw? Dawnclaw looked hesitant, “And, how exactly are we supposed to do that?” She asked.

Dawnclaw looked rather frightened and was crouching down like a small kit hearing an elders tale. She wasn’t one to show much weakness, but know there seemed to be a new responsibility that weighed her down. She looked back and forth from Auburnfeather to Sparrowtail. She was going to have to work together with Auburnfeather to find the clans new territory? Why was such a responsibility being put on her shoulders? Dawnclaw seemed frozen for words, horrified.

“And, if we don't achieve,” She finally spoke up. “All the clans will... crumble?” She asked, her voice a bit shaky. This had to be wrong, there was absolutely no way she was supposed to do this. “Yeah, no, I-I,” She stopped. “You must be wrong, I cant.” Dawnclaw said as she stood up again, and turned, ready to head back into Shadowclan territory and forget everything she’d just heard.

Auburnfeather

He was stunned, at a loss for a words. Of all the cats, why him? Why Dawnclaw? It was unfair, and his heart went out to her, seeing her look so small as she sat crouched before him. Auburnfeather wanted to comfort her, but what could he say? He didn't want to do this either, leaving home to travel to Starclan's know where. It seemed reckless, irresponsible even. What his clan needed him and he wasn't there? What if he left and never made it home? The fate of his clan, of all the clans was hanging in the balance of their very decision. Even Rowanstar didn't back the medicine cat, so how could he? Auburnfeather remained silent, simply shaking his head.

"Trust Starclan, if you don't trust me. They have chosen you, this is your path and your path alone." Sparrowtail urged, her eyes pleading as they darted back and forth between the pair. "You must decide, and quickly. Prey grows scarcer by the day." The medicine cat suddenly seemed very exhausted, casting a glance over her shoulder. "You can, dear." She addressed Dawnclaw now specifically. "You know what you must do. I have to go, before they notice I'm gone. It's in your paws now."

Auburnfeather started to protest, but Sparrowtail was already turning on her heels and bounding away into the shrubbery she had come from. His pelt felt hot and prickly, squeamish in his own skin. "Go home Dawnclaw." He said softly, rising to his paws, his body angled towards the direction the medicine cat disappeared. Auburnfeather couldn't ask the Shadowclan warrior to come with him, and so he would merely give her the impression that he planned to stay as well. The plan came to him in a blur, but he was certain. He would leave when the clans were sleeping, when he could slip away unnoticed by family and friends. So he could cross the boarders without being confronted. Auburnfeather would go, and if Sparrowtail was right, Starclan would guide him safely.

"Shadowclan needs you, go home, it's alright." Auburnfeather insisted. "It's alright." The tabby tried to smile, an otherwise charming gesture, soured by the fear that lingered behind his eyes. He had never felt so lost, but he knew what he had to do. If this was this last ditch effort to protect his home, to protect her, Auburnfeather could live with that.

Dawnclaw

Dawnclaw stopped in her tracks as she knew Sparrowtail was talking directly to her. When Dawnclaw new Sparrowtail left, she didn’t move, she stood there frozen, not facing the Riverclan border. Her head dropped slightly, what was she supposed to do? The clans gate was rested in Auburnfeather and her paws alone. Would Auburnfeather really be able to make the journey alone? Dawnclaw shook her fur, she shouldn’t even think that! She knew he wouldn’t of let her go alone, and if he was going to go, she’d go with him.

She turned around facing him after he spoke, “I’m going if you are.” She said almost immediately, not hesitating. “The fate of the clans are rested in our paws and our paws alone, we’ve got to do it.” She said as she took a seat. There was a new determination all through Dawnclaw’s eyes as she looked at the other cat. She might not come back from this journey. This might all be a trick from Riverclan to kill her. She shook her head, it couldn’t be, it was clear Hollyflower knew about the whole thing as well. And a medicine cat, no matter what clan, would never hurt another cat unless absolutely necessary.

Dawnclaw took a moment to lick her paw, dragging it over her ear, “We will leave at moon rise.” She said. “Meet right here, and we can start our journey then.” She told him. They had no idea where they were going. She shook her head slightly, “On this journey, I’ll protect you like I’d protect a clanmate, with my life.” She said with a curt dip of her head. She was nervous, and knew he probably was to, so she’d do her best to reassure him, even though she wasn’t sure he’d do the same for her. Dawnclaw let out a soft breath.

She decided she’d go back to the camp, inform Hollyflower of her decision so she’d know why Dawnclaw wasn’t in camp. She could get some traveling herbs hopefully as well, even though they’d probably not do much good, considering neither of the cats had any clue where Starclan was going to lead them. She had faith she’d be safe though, being lead by their warrior ancestors. She still couldn’t help the nagging feeling tugging at her stomach however as she sat there, a ton of doubtful thoughts swarming through her mind.

Auburnfeather

"Moonrise," He agreed, nodding his head in acknowledgement. "I'll be here." Auburnfeather said softly. The determination in Dawnclaw eased his fears a little. They could do this. Somewhere out there was food, a better home for all of them and it was just waiting for them to find it. And they would find it, together, the tom cat had no doubt. "I'll protect you every step of the way, I promise." Auburnfeather tried to reassure her. He didn't know if it would work, if a Shadowclan cat could put her trust in a Riverclan cat to that large of a degree, but he meant it. They were one on this journey, and if anything else, he would make sure that Dawnclaw made it home at the very least.

Softly, he touched his bushy tail to her shoulder. "I'll see you soon, don't be late." Auburnfeather took one final look at her, before slinking off in the direction the medicine cat had disappeared. As nervous as he was, he felt exhilarated all the same. He slipped through the camp's tunnel, and headed straight for the medicine den to tell Sparrowtail their decision.

- - - - - - - -

It was difficult, not being able to tell anyone what was happening to him. Especially his sister, Rosepool, who lay beside him in the warrior's den that night, snoring softly. She would be upset to discover that he had disappeared, and even more so for not knowing why. He lay awake, praying to Starclan that she had the sensibility not to come after him. In the dead silence of the night, Auburnfeather carefully left the den without turning back. The petite medicine cat was waiting for him by the tunnel, a small bundle of herbs laying at her feet. "Take these before you go, they'll give you strength Auburnfeather." The tom cat made a face before forcing down the bitter tasting travel herbs.

"You're sure about this?" He pressed softly, but everything about Sparrowtail's demeanor confirmed this fact.

"You and Dawnclaw will make us all very proud." The medicine cat mused, dipping her head in confirmation. "Hurry now, before you're late. May Starclan light your path."

Auburnfeather softly nuzzled the she-cat in farewell, before letting his paws carry him forward. He walked briskly, ears perked in alert for anything out of the ordinary. Jaw parted, he breathed in the crisp night air, trying to pick up Dawnclaw's sweet scent. He'd detected it, he believed, but couldn't see her just yet. His lean body appeared from the undergrowth, and he suddenly felt very exposed out here in the dark like this. "Dawnclaw?" He called for her quietly, stopping just short of their border. It was out of habit, but also in his uncertainty. What if something had prevent her from coming? What if Hollyflower urged her to stay back? No. He shook his head, she would be there.

Dawnclaw

When Dawnclaw has gotten back to camp, she told Hollyflower everything. She wasn’t surprised when the she cat told her she knew. Dawnclaw ended up telling her how she’d be leaving camp to start the journey that night, Hollyflower had nodded before telling her she’d be waiting with a few herbs by her den entrance. Dawnclaw had hurried off to get some fresh kill, spending her last few hours in camp with Birdseye and Cedartuft. She enjoyed there company, before the three made their way to the warrior den.

When moonhigh hit, Dawnclaw pushed herself to her paws. She shook her fur, fluffy it out as she looked at her littermates for the last time in Starclan knows how long. She then pushed her way out of the warriors den, and saw Hollyflower waiting with herbs. “I was afraid you decided to stay.” She told the she cat as Dawnclaw bent her head to lick up the herbs, “Never, I’d die to protect my clan, and now all the clans need me.” She said, trying not to think of the fowl taste in her mouth. Hollyflower dipped her head, “You’re a wise cat, Dawnclaw.” She said before touching noses to the warrior. “Good luck, and may Starclan light your path.” She said. Dawnclaw purred before pulling back. She casted one glance at the medicine car before bounding out of camp.

She picked her way carefully through the trees. There was a patrol out hunting, and Dawnclaw knew that, but they’d be more towards the two leg place. Shadowclan cats preferred to hunt at night. When she was coming up on the border, she heard Auburnfeather call her name, but didn’t answer immediately as she pushed her way through the trees. Eventually he was in sight, the trees were behind her as she sat at the border, as if trying to prepare herself. Her ear flicked, out of nerves as she opened her mouth in a small yawn.

“We better get some distance away from the clans so no one sees us.” She told the Riverclan cat. She couldn’t help the odd sensation flowing through her body as she looked at him. This all seemed so crazy to her. She was about to leave Shadowclan behind for the first time ever, with a cat she barley knew. Before she could change her mind and turn back, she stood, “Let’s go.” She mumbled to him. However, she had no idea where she was going as she began to lead the two in a random direction.

Auburnfeather

Auburnfeather nodded, padding after Dawnclaw without protest. It wasn’t as though he knew where he was going anyway. If this was Starclan’s will, surely that wouldn’t allow them to travel in the completely wrong direction forever. Crossing the border felt strange to the tom, but he had no fear of repercussion from anyone. “What do you think we’re looking for exactly?” He pondered, whiskers twitching curiously. Surely, they would know it when they found it, he suspected, but until then the air of mystery was a real pain in the tail.

As late as the hour was, and for not having slept, Auburnfeather was surprised to find that he wasn’t tired. The excitement of adrenaline pumping through his body with every pawstep. The moonlight certainly was beautiful, bathing their path in the slow glow of its grace. It was enough to see for about a mile or so, but the Riverclan warrior kept alert all the same. The soft sound of an owl hooting in the distance brought a smile to the tom’s maw. It wasn’t every day he could experience the forest in this form, and for what it was worth, he could at least learn to appreciate the little things.

“Hope you can keep up,” He purred, turning his head to pass a playful smirk in Dawnclaw’s direction. He wanted out of the clans before they were spotted and well before the first patrol was set to take off for the dawn patrol. Auburnfeather knew that the quicker they were gone, the sooner their scents would disappear and the harder it would be for either one of their clan’s to track them down. That didn’t mean they had to be so serious, though. What was the harm in having a little fun?

“I’ll race you!” He chimed again, nudging Dawnclaw in a playful gesture, before his shoulder hunched and Auburnfeather sprang forward in a graceful sprint. He was elegant for a lengthy tom, long fur disrupted and haphazardly blowing in the wind he created. Strong paws struck the cool grass in what were otherwise silent steps and he raced towards the edge of Shadowclan territory and into the unknown that was waiting for them.

Auburnfeather had noticed the moment they left the clans behind, the entire atmosphere seemingly different. It shifted right before his very eyes. The smells were different, the sights were different, even the underbrush felt different as he hit the breaks, slowing to a halt to take it all in. He suddenly felt small in a very big world. “Dawnclaw?” He murmured softly. “I think we should look for a place to rest for the night, perhaps down the valley there.” The red cat motioned his muzzle towards the bowl of the terrain that was sprawled out in front of them and stretched on for what could be miles. “I don’t think we’ll do anyone any good, stumbling around in the dark.”

Dawnclaw

Dawnclaw looked over at Auburnfeather as he spoke of racing and the she cats eyes seemed to widen a bit i’m surprise as he started to run. A purr arose in her throat as she speed up, she admired the way his muscles ripples under his pelt. She was close to pacing the tom, when he came to a stop, Dawnclaw stumbled over her paws a bit as she stopped as well. She panted as she looked around at her unfamiliar surroundings. Everything had changed, she wasn’t in Shadowclan anymore. For Starclan sakes, she wasn’t near any of the clans. She began to feel exposed in such an open area, when Auburnfeather spoke up, snapping her from her thoughts.

She looked where he was motioning and nodded, “Good idea.” She mumbled. She figured Hollyflower didn’t give her anything to not feel tired, considering they ddi leave for the night. Dawnclaw took a moment longer to look around at her unfamiliar surroundings, it was rather hard to see in the dark, but she still did her best. She let her eyes wander over to Auburnfeather after a moment, once more admiring him. She enjoyed the way the moon hit his red pelt. After a moment, she gave the tom a curt nod. “Let’s go.” She mumbled softly.

The she cat began to make her way in the direction Auburnfeather had pointed. She started off a slow pace, and eventually sped up to a running pace once more. They ran down a small hill, and Dawnclaw was running so fast to the point she tripped over her own paw and tumbled over. She sat, shaking her head slightly before licking one of her paws, “Don't laugh.” She said sternly, looking over to Auburnfeather before he could even think about laughing at her. She got back to her paws, before finishing her run to the valley.

Dawnclaw would never admit it, but one of her paws was hurting from tripping. She found an area under a small tree and laid down, her front paw in front of her in an awkward position. Thanks to her herbs, she wasn’t feeling very hungry. She looked around at her surroundings once more, taking all of them in so in the morning she wouldn’t be too surprised to wake up there. Her eyes wandered over to Auburnfeather, not saying a word. It hadn’t even hit her yet, but she was embarrassed from tripping in front of him. She didn’t say anything, as she set her head down, not closing her eyes, just thinking.

Auburnfeather

Auburnfeather bounded after her, keeping stride with her even Dawnclaw's pace quickened. He kept just behind her, marveling at the way she carried herself. A soft chuckle rumbled in throat, abruptly cut short as she tumbled forward. His copper eyes widened immediately in surprise, a gasp escaping him. Auburnfeather dug his paws into the soft ground, skidding to a clumsy stop. He kept his footing though, concern washing over his maw for a brief moment before her words brought a rush of relief. "I'm not laughing," He tried, but flashed her an amused smile. The fall looked painful from a spectator's view, but she was taking it like a champ and Auburnfeather didn't want to patronize her. "As long as you're okay." He added softly, but the tom cat's words were genuine.

He kept right beside Dawnclaw after that, casting her the occasional side-ways glance to make sure she was walking alright. Auburnfeather suspected her paw was at least sore, if not twisted from the fall, but he was no medicine cat to know for sure. As they approached their makeshift den for the night, he inhaled sharply, able to relax when he couldn't detect the smell of any threats in the area. It was as good a place as any, and gave Dawnclaw the perfect opportunity to stay off her paws. He laid down beside her, his bushy tail curling around his body for the warmth.

Thoughtfully, he resting his head against his paws, glancing up at her with a curious expression. "What are you thinking about?" He pondered aloud, whiskers twitching lightly. "Does your paw hurt?" Auburnfeather raised his head again to meet her gaze. Admittedly, he wasn't sure what he could do for her. Sparrowtail only briefed him on the basics before he left, ad it was a lot to take in. He wrecked his brain a moment, trying to recall everything she had said to little to no avail. He frowned momentarily at the thought, unhappy he couldn't remember. "I could get you something for it. Or maybe try to hunt while you rest." The Riverclan tom mewed.

"Or," He continued, shrugging lightly. "I can take the first watch if you just want to sleep." Auburnfeather hoped he wasn't rambling. Hoped that he hadn't overstepped by trying to support her. They needed each other on this journey, and it was strange how he already felt as though this was right. That this would not work with any other cat at his side. Perhaps Starclan knew what they were doing after all. "Am I talking too much?" He laughed, a humored puff stifling in his throat. Auburnfeather allowed a goofy grin to grace his lips, eyes bright in the slow glow of the moon. "I just want to help."

Dawnclaw

“I’m thinking about,” Dawnclaw hesitated as she lifted her head off her paws. “About how crazy this all seems. We learned about this prophecy today, and we’ve already started our journey going to Starclan knows where!” She exclaimed, her eyes rather light. Her pelt was glowing under the moonlight, as she lifted her head to look at the stars. She trusted her warrior ancestors, so she knew this was right, this was there destiny. To find a whole new land seemed impossible though.

When the tom asked if her paw was okay, Dawnclaw looked down at it. She wasn’t going to show any weakness. “It’s fine, Auburnfeather.” She said simply after a moment, casting a look down at it before letting out a soft breath. She knew she was basically representing Shadowclan, they weren’t weak cats, none of them, and Dawnclaw wasn’t going to show any cat they were, especially a cat from another clan. The she cats eyes widened a slight bit as Auburnfeather started to talk without stop, “I’m fine, really.” She said. “I know your trying to help, but you don’t need to worry.” She mumbled.

Dawnclaw let out a breath, “It would be nice if you took first watch.” She muttered, setting her head on her paws for a moment to rest. Suddenly everything felt fine, all Dawnclaw’s fears seemed to be washed away, it felt somewhat right. At first, Dawnclaw thought she would rather prefer going on a journey with her own clanmate preferably Birchpelt, a tom she’d found she was rather found of, though she’d never admit. Now she was on the journey with a Riverclan cat, a cat from a completely different clan, and couldn’t help admiring the tom at times.

Dawnclaw took a moment longer before finally lifting her head, “However, I can take first watch if you want to sleep.” She said, trying to look as less tired as she could. She didn’t want to look tired so he’d feel sympathy for her. If he wanted to sleep, she’d allow him to. Dawnclaw found it was rather hard for her to hold her head up however, and set it down once more. She scooted her body closer to Auburnfeather, taking in the tom’s heat as she let out a satisfied breath.

Auburnfeather

"I'll take first watch, get some rest." He mused simply, casting a glance towards the moon. Towards Starclan. "I'll wake you if I can't stay awake myself." Auburnfeather flashed a smile, a toothy little grin, the white of his fangs glinting in the soft moonlight. The Riverclan cat took to his position without another word. Sitting back on his hind quarters, he perked his ears in an alert, but casually stance. It was strange, how he didn't really feel tired despite the late hour. In fact, he'd never felt more awake. Whether it was the adrenaline, the thrill of adventure, or the simple fact that his mind was racing a hundred miles an hour, he wasn't entirely sure. Although it was most certainly the later. This was the beginning of a fresh start. What they'd have to endure to make it to the finish line, though, that was leaving him swimming in his own head.

The night was quiet though, the rhythmic sound of Dawnclaw's breathing was comforting even in the unfamiliar territory. No strange sounds or scents filled his senses as the night wore on. It had been hours he thought, and yet no weariness had reached his bones. He remembered the night before his apprentice ceremony, how he had stayed awake all night with excitement pounding through his veins. This was a similar feeling, but somehow this was a more important task at hand. Auburnfeather cast a gentle glance over this shoulder, watching the sleeping warrior with a curiosity burning in his copper stare. Would they really be able to do this?

Of course. What kind of mousebrain question was that? As if Starclan would let them fail.

It hit him then, much like a sudden crash of the ocean waves on the undisturbed shores. It hit him hard and it hit fast. Auburnfeather swore he was awake, but it also felt like he was lost in darkness. Drowning in it. It engulfed his vision, washing the moonlight out and drowning it in a endless black. He started to panic, his fur standing on end before he realized that the darkness was fading and revealing a whole new reality. A whole new place. Maybe he was dreaming. NO. The Riverclan warrior nearly sneered out loud, but it was the soft breathing of Dawnclaw echoing in his ears that kept him grounded.

The vision he saw now was a glorious landscape, a river flowing with fish running through the valley. Bright green forestry surrounding the territory. It was alive with life and hope. He saw it then, the mountain tops were set in the distance, fog dancing around them in the most glorious sight he had ever seen. This must be it. This must be what Starclan intends for us to find. Auburnfeather was aware now of a large tomcat, and the longer he looked the more cats he could make out in the shadows. Their eyes were shining just stars. It was sight he would remember for the rest of his life. Starclan had come to him, they really were there to guide the unlikely pair.

"Where can we find this place?" Auburnfeather pressed, but the cats simply gazed at him for a spit second longer before they slowly began to fade from his vision. Within an instant he was staring at a black abyss, and slowly but surely, the reality of his true settings set in. The ginger cat was breathing heavily now, immediately turning his attention to Dawnclaw, still undisturbed. He tested the air, but couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary. Did he fall asleep? Or did Starclan really show him where they belonged? He couldn't be sure, but he knew that he had to share it with Dawnclaw. For this to work, they needed each other and they needed each other most of all.
