Opinion What does being a furry mean to you?

I'm not a furry myself. Not at all. I just feel like I'm kind of confused as to a what being a furry means. I thought that since I've seen a lot of you here on this site I'd ask you. What does being a furry mean? To you?
I mean are you all attracted to anthropomorphic depictions of animals or are you maybe attracted to real animals as well? Do you dress up as animals for like satisfaction? Are there other aspects that define furries?
I want to hear your story so I can have a better understanding for the concept as a whole. Hopefully this can shed some light on the subject and create a good discussion.

Personally, I just like the artstyle, though there ARE some who enjoy dressing up in suits or are sexually attracted to furry characters.
A furry is generally speaking just someone who is favorable to the idea of an anthropomorphic animal as a whole

i just like being a furry cause i want to be a animal and i have mothers instincts to protect my pets and cats. i really love animals. mostly cats. which are cuddle bugs, i would never be sexaully attracted though, its like a mother child thing

The technical definition of furry is an enthusiast of anthropomorphic animals. Not necessarily the art or the suiting, you just have to like the idea of anthropomorphic animals. I enjoy being a furry because the fandom is somewhere I can really be myself, and no, I don't mean that by my fursona. I can speak about the things others wouldn't, talk with others from the fandom about things that others would laugh at. It's somewhere I feel welcome because I won't be called out for being a furry. Another thing I like about the fandom is that most of the members are friendly and fun to talk to.

for me? I found the topic interesting, it added a level to my roleplaying and helped with it, the community is pretty good (some bad apples but not many) theres the sexual side to it of course, which I enjoy, it's very fun and interesting, but it's like any other fandom or group since the dawn of time

To me it kinda just means admitting that I like the idea and belong to the fandom, when I heard the idea it sounded pretty cool, then I finally managed to find art and a community, and the art was awesome and made me admit I liked the idea even more cuz, I mean, fuzzy people= awesome cuddles. Or that is what my brain came up with XD So yep.

I personally plan on getting into more things that define the fandom such as the "fursuiting" aspect cuz that just seems and sounds like a lot of fun, maybe going to one of the cons if only to experience it. And to just get to know more people who are part of it cuz I met one at a county fair once, she was one of the nicest people I've met, and had one amazing set of neon ears XD But yeah, I'm done. We got our bad apples like everyone else cuz that is how things go, but we're just another fandom with an appreciation for a certain art form in my opinion.

I like animals -- and I enjoy anthro art. (Especially well designed ones, since I'm into design myself.) But I don't consider myself a furry, nor have I had many good experiences with furries. I've had several negative ones and it's to the point where I don't really want to interact with any.

Yeah, we've got some rotten ones in the fandom, but every fandom does. I'm sorry that your experience had to be ruined by them.

I’m gonna spill my guts all on this in my personal opinion as a ex-(sorta)furry. There mainly are just three groups of furries. Ones that are little kids that love the cartoons and mainly misunderstood the core of furry culture, the people that make furry products and like to make money off of it including people who are adults but are not really the true fandom convention type of people. Then there are the hardcore fursuit yiff furries that I don’t want to explain it deeply but let’s just say they are radical and have intimacy with not only humans but also animals. I personally think being a furry can be addictive if you tap the hardcore beliefs but I hate it and am happy I haven’t done anything regrettable

I don't really consider myself a "furry", though by some of the definitons here I would be. My experiences with the furry community have been of people who identify themselves in some kind of animal (example: Identifying as a cat, not at the level of transgender people, but I guess more on a mental/emotional/spiritual kind of level?) , or who like to indulge in a furry self-insert fantasy whether it be through art or through real life fursuit wearing.

I do enjoy furry art at times (really depends, and I generally tend to find any pornographic-style art pretty disgusting, but only a portion of furry/anthropormophic art is like that) and don't particularly mind furry characters, though I still tend to avoid those RPs as usually the players are either too focused on the furry aspect, too outside of my RP preferences in terms of lenth and detail or both.

Why do I sometimes like furry art? #CUTENESSISJUSTICE!!!

The community is definitely artistic. I find it a bit odd, but the characters they like or might be into are consenting adults, just anamorphic.

I'm not a furry, but I have met a few. However, none were at all the good variety, in fact one of them literally had furry porn on their phone, and they showed me. Worst school day of my life.

It goes two ways: you like the furry stuff in general or you are complete degenerate and are abusing animals.

I wouldn't consider myself a furry, but I absolutely ADORE the artwork. Visual Porn in general is a big meh to me and that obviously includes the furry stuff. Reading it is an entirely different story though. I'm down to read pretty much any erotica, furry included but I don't actively look for it. If it pops up and catches my interest, I read it. For the overwhelming most part though, I tend to just stick to the most wholesome of furry artwork, mostly admiring. I don't have some fursona and express negative desire to get a fursuit. Put an AC unit in a fursuit and make them more creative instead of big football mascots, then we'll talk. Right now though, it just looks like a bad version of cosplay.

In terms of RP, I'm furry friendly, but sometimes there's way too much focus on them being anthropomorphic. I would never host a furry RP and I definitely wouldn't make a furry character, though I have made an anthropomorphic squirrel who was a beast of a knight in a group RP. While he couldn't use magic, he was incredibly fast. The name was Ethan Coleman and I love that character. Far more noble than most the other knights in that world

Adults who cannot grow up and pretend they are animals to be quite honest which probably would be labeled a mental illness depending on where one is from.

But then I feel that way about my aunt who plays Pokémon go incessantly at like...40 something.
