So far I've discovered designated color schemes look really good, but does anyone else have nuggets of wisdom?

Use basic BBcode knowledge, creative use of images and a decent amount of trial and error. You can get a lot done that way. If you’re wondering how to get that basic knowledge of you don’t have it, there are guides on site.
