eye color | Brown
hair color | Black
height | 1.86m

Nico is a fairly wiry-looking young man, whose dark eyes are often seen squinting under the unwelcome sunlight of the day as if he's just woken up. His black hair is cut close to the scalp with the sides shaven so that it fades into the dusty, taupe-coloured skin underneath. He has a slightly protruding chin with not-entirely-shaven facial hair - a tell-tale sign of a hasty exit in the morning. His usually unassuming features light up almost unrecognisably when he smiles, his eyebrows creased with a ready laugh and his lips pulling his face into an expression of warm attentiveness - so much that you wouldn't notice the near-invisible bags under his eyes and the way his eyelids stay closed just a moment longer than necessary, as if willing themselves to open again with every blink.

likes | novelty cafes, animated TV shows, old pianos
dislikes | low-quality sushi, mumble rap, music played at very loud volumes
fears | rotting food, long-term memory loss and photos from 'that one high school house party he went to' being put online
quirks | struggles to sleep without an eye mask, cooks unusual fusion dishes, counts '5-6-7-8' in his head to gear up for something he doesn't want to do, did taekwondo for 6 years (runner-up in middle school state championships)

personality
As someone talented enough to be pretty good at most things he puts his mind to, Nico can come across as quite laid-back, a touch capricious with his interests, but a highly self-critical and dedicated worker when he is put to task. He has a people-pleasing streak which feeds into his desire not to let people down, but as of late he has been reconsidering the expectations that are at play in his life - something which has manifested into a growing self-distancing from the familiar scenes and songs of his high school years.

There are still clear signs of his characteristic enthusiasm and verve for the stage, but since starting college he has become more patient with his observations. Instead of diving without a care into both familiar and unfamiliar alike, Nico picks both his words and interests with a relaxed care, before accelerating towards his decided destination as if he was running out of time to get there. This is reflected in the way he 'switches on' once he steps onto the stage, where all his thoughts and observations and dithering have settled, leaving only an electric stage presence - warm and inviting but also thrilling and joyous - which has been practised over a lifetime of carving out a place for himself and his superstar sister on the unforgiving battlefield that is the world of theatre.

bio
Nico Bailey was born into a musical, cross-cultural family, his father being of Jamaican-Irish descent and his mother being a retired Japanese-American actress. His sister Hoshiko (affectionately nicknamed 'Star') was born a year later and the two of them grew up together, inseparable as two peas in a pod. They first encountered music through the church where their father - an amateur jazz pianist in his youth - played piano for the choir. Nico loved to sing as he listened to the sound of the beat-up upright piano as his father brought it to life with wonderfully lyrical hymns. Before long he and his sister were singing in the choir as part of the church services.

The two siblings' musical gifts were made apparent from an early age, and their mother, being well-acquainted with the theatrical arts and the industry, pushed them to hone their talents. They took piano lessons from their father, instrumental lessons from various private tutors, and spent their childhood taking extracurricular courses in all manner of theatrical disciplines - dance, drama, singing, whatever their mother deemed advantageous to a potential future in theatre. Nico initially threw himself into it with enthusiasm - after all, he was able to do all the things he loved with the sister he loved, what was there not to like about it?

However, as they continued to grow in age and expertise, cracks started to form in the glass of Nico's musical snow globe. He noticed his mother investing more time and effort into developing his sister's craft, and though he never felt unloved, he could feel the imbalance of attention. When his sister got her first boyfriend, it came as a shock as he realised that she was drawing the interest of other boys - there were those who found her attractive, and she easily gained popularity at school with her looks and musical talents. He had entered middle school as a bit of an oddity; these things he'd never thought were stuff to be ashamed about - his singing and dancing, his skinny limbs, his mixed ancestry - caused him to be ostracised so badly that he'd ended up taking martial arts to feel tougher and maybe protect Star when she came to enter this new crueller world. Instead, when she moved up from 5th grade, his sister seemed to be shine all the brighter. The difference between them were like night and day, and for the very first time, Nico began considering the unthinkable - were they perhaps not the two peas in a pod, the single unit that he'd always thought they were?

The years passed and throughout middle school and high school, the Bailey siblings dominated the scholastic music scene. They took stage productions on tour, they placed at national singing competitions, they even competed in local dance battles (it was just the one time, and they almost won it all). It was in no small part to the tour de force that Hoshiko Bailey had become, an irresistible theatrical powerhouse who out-sang, out-danced, and just generally outdid the competition with such ruthless guile and ability that their final years of high school became known as 'the Bailey Dynasty'. People were glad when the undefeated pair were finally broken up as Nico left to study music at college.

There, Nico found that this was a different world altogether - sure, there were still some of the old recognisable trends here and there from high school (why did everyone drink so much?) but here, there was an openness to new ideas which Nico had never experienced before. Ways to do music which he'd never previously imagined, so much he didn't know and things that he was allowed to not know but to explore. He was taken by the prospect of doing something entirely different from what he'd always done with his sister - they'd done it so many times before now, and it was always the same curtain call, the same applause, the same adoration as people crowded around her with starstruck eyes... for her, it was a familiar scene, because it was her scene.

Maybe now was a good time for him to find his.

Nico Bailey [Brother]:
If she's the princess he's the prince. She loves her brother to the ends of the earth and back and they've been two peas in a pod for as long as she can remember. She believes he is as talented as her, and believes that both of their futures are bright so long as they stick together. She is worried and curious about the fact it feels like there is a shift happening between them. She's not sure she likes it and wants things to stay the way they've always been.
Aurora Reed [The shy girl]:
She doesn't really know her too well due to the girls shy nature. Often unintentionally treating her like a stage hand or an assistant more then an equal performer in the club. At the moment she believes if the girl does have talent she's wasting it by not letting it be known. She also just so happens to live in her same dorm, but so far she's rarely seen her except in the distance. She honestly wasn't even sure she lived there until someone spoke about it.
Charlotte McKenzie [The Cheerleader]:
She doesn't know her too well due to her only being in the club for a brief amount of time so far, but what she can tell is she's got the drive necessary for this line of business. She's an alpha type female, and she's unsure yet if they'll wind up getting along due to mutual interests or if there can only be one leader of the pack.
Zephyr Evermore [The Jock]:
She has no complaints about Zeph. Honestly when she first met him she was skeptical of the jocks intentions and if he took this seriously, but after working on a few duets together and getting to know him a bit better she's realized that he's a good guy, and a hard worker. So far she enjoys her time around him quite a bit. Though she'd never admit it, she's developed a small crush on him. Living in the same dorm is not making that any easier to ignore.
Astrid Day [The new girl]:
They've yet to meet officially yet since she's new to the club, but she could've sworn she saw her walking around in the hallway in her dorms.
Jarrod McAlister [The loner]:
TBD
Mathias Manzano [The Techie]:

Biography

Hoshiko was the second born and only daughter into a musically inclined multicultural home. Her father was a Jamaican--Irish armature Jazz pianist, and her mother was a second generation Japanese american aspiring actress. They affectionately named her Hoshiko which translates to "Star child" being that after their son was born they decided their children shouldn't have to try and fit in because they were destined to stand out. However due to her name being so bold they do call her Star most of the time (except their mother who shortens it to Hoshi), and that's the name she prefers people around her to call her if not dealing with her stage presence. Her parents dreams had to be put on an indefinite hold once her mother became pregnant with her older brother Nico, and by the time she came along they'd given them up to raise their children. This did mean however that all their opes and dreams (specifically their mother's) was placed on them before they even realized what was happening especially when they noticed the children actually had a gift for music.

Being so close in age helped the two become the best of friends. One was rarely seen without the other in anything and they loved it. While their parents pushed them to be their very best at whatever they were pursuing their mother pushed even harder on Hoshiko. It was subtle at first and neither child noticed it since they were both in so much of the same things and as children the same is expected. They were involved in church from a young age and joined the youth choir. Their parents gave them vocal lessons, introduced them to Jazz, and taught them how to play the piano. Music was always ringing through the Bailey home. They took dance classes of various different forms outside of school as well. Anything to give them a competitive edge in the industry their parents were grooming them to be a part of. It was a lot on their plate but she loved every moment of it. She got to have fun alongside her brother everyday with the help of her parents who were always very supportive of her and her efforts. They pushed her, but they also always gave a lot of praise.

While her brother would eventually take up martial arts Hoshiko decided to take up a second instrument learning how to play the Violin in the school band starting in the 6th grade. Even though she didn't notice it at first 6th grade was the turning point for her. Her mother started being even more demanding of her, and people at school seemed to be taking more notice of her too. To her surprise people seemed a bit surprised to find out that Nico was her older brother. She was too young and naive at the time to understand why, and that Nico's 6th grade experience the year before had been very different. Her focus however was on what it always had been, her brother and her music.

That was until she got the attention of a cute 7th grader who asked her to be his girlfriend. It was her first experience with something like this, so without much thought he said yes. Unsure of what her parents would think the only one she confided in was Nico. As most middle school relationships go it didn't last long, but the impact had already made it's mark. Over the course of the next three years was that start of them dominating their field. In theater and drama clubs and class they always landed leading roles, in Glee and Choir they always got the best solos, and in her band class she was usually 1st chair for her section. Their success outside of school was very similar winning at most competitions. Often if they had to compete against one another because it wasn't split by genders or solo competitions Hoshiko would get 1st while Nico got 2nd. Hoshiko was always still proud of them as a team when that happened not realizing that a shadow was growing and it was slowly covering him. She was so blinded by all the praise and adoration she got, she didn't notice they weren't cheering as loudly for him. Only she was.

Freshman year she once again was met with even more attention from her peers. She was extremely popular considering she was to most people the whole package. She was beautiful, talented, and she wasn't dumb. She of course had her courses she struggled in but she never made failing grades. The brighter she shined the bigger her shadow was, and without realizing it she'd developed a controlling complex to want to keep it that way. To keep her brother right beside her as he was without realizing she was keeping him below her where everyone else seemed to have put him to. The best of them all, but still 2nd best to her.

Freshman year she got her second boyfriend, but this time things were different. With age things were more serious. Sadly by the end of the year he'd broken her heart by dumping her for the more popular head cheerleader at the time because she'd been voted homecoming Princess. Hoshiko had been too busy to even run for something like that, but that's how high school is she discovered. People were always chasing what was new, who was the pretties, what was the best, who was the winner. With that realization she stopped trusting people so blindly, and decided the only person she could trust was her brother. After admitting to her mother what had happened she was told that was the nature of the industry she would join one day. So she gritted her teeth painted a smile on her face and decided to play the game to rise to the top anyways. If she couldn't have real love and affection, then she would get as much of the praise that she was used to as she could. It had been enough for her this long, it could be enough now too.

Staying stuck in her own ambitions, she proceeded through high school status quo of being at the top of their game. The "Bailey Dynasty" was unstoppable in anything they did. While she often felt alone when her brother wasn't around (not that she ever admitted it) she gives off an air that of the bossy, primadonna diva. Thanks to her mothers heavy influence the habits have rubbed off on her making her just as much of a perfectionist. Knowing her mother will accept nothing less from her at this point it feels like she's always whispering in her ears. While many just like her play the high school cool kids clique and act like they get along she knew none of them were real friends. She knew they talked trash behind her back about her being stuck up, or bossy. She didn't care though since music and theater were cut-throat industries. They just didn't know what it took to be successful, they didn't have the drive or the passion that she had. When her name is up in lights they'll understand.

Her one saving grace has always been her brother in her eyes. No matter how she gets, or acts he's always right beside her. He was her protector from everything he could protect her from other than herself or his insecurities. Knowing what the world was like now and would be like it made her hold onto him even tighter. She couldn't lose the one rock she had, the one trustworthy person in this would who'd love her no matter what. Their industry was cut throat, and white dominated, so everything about them was in the minority rate. They needed one another, it was them against the world and she was determined to win.

Things started to change once again in her life when he came home from winter break from his 1st semester at college. He seemed a little different, and she couldn't quite explain how. When she joined him last year it started becoming more and more apparent that things were off between them. She wanted to fix it and make things like they used to be for them. She needed her right hand man. For it to stay them against the world. She didn't push it much being new and adjusting to the new scene as a whole, but this year she is determined to figure out what exactly is going on and make things go back to normal again so she can focus on her and her brothers road to stardom.

about rori
Aurora was the only child of Henry and Tessa Reed, two young teens who had no business having kids when they did. Surprise! They got married right after finding out Tessa was pregnant, and nine months later, Aurora popped out. But having a baby changes the dynamics of a relationship, and though her parents thought they could handle being parents, they quickly found out they were wrong. The fighting only intensified, so imagine everyones surprise when Aurora's mother ended up pregnant again.

Fast forward nine months to when Rori's younger brother Benjamin was born. Their father had suspicions that he wasn't his son, but Tessa swore up and down he was. Aurora and Benjamin had a tumultuous childhood, but Rori would usually just take Ben into her room while their parents fought and play him songs on her guitar, the one material thing she had that she actually cared about. And it helped, because they would sing songs together and they formed a bond that couldn't be broken.

That is, until Tessa decided during one particular fight to come clean and tell Henry that she was leaving and that Benjamin wasn't, in fact, his son. The fight that ensued was explosive, but Tessa ended up taking Benjamin and leaving. Aurora tried to convince her mom to come back, to not take her brother, but in the end the parents-- and the kids-- were split. Henry moved himself and Aurora to another town around when the girl was in middle school.

The fighting still ensued, so when Rori finally graduated high school, she was happy to go off to college and get away from the toxicity. She still keeps in touch with Benjamin in secret; their parents have no idea the siblings still talk. But he's her rock and she's his protector, as best she can be from so far away.

backstory:
Jolene McAllister gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, 8 lbs. 6 oz. and healthy as could be. Even though she was a drama professor, she always made time for her little Jarrod. She even brought him to class a few times. And, though he'd NEVER admit it to his mother, that's how he fell in love with the theatre. Jarrod would sing to himself in the shower...and any other place he'd get away with it. Singing was his passion. He spent more time singing than he did making friends though. And, when he enrolled in college, it really showed. His mom thinks he only majored in Musical Theatre to please her but Jay has bigger aspirations...though that could take a backseat to him actually making a friend or two before its too late.

personality
Matt is a humble, average engineering-major student who is still unsure about his life ahead and doesn't really enjoy the major he's studying. It’s not that he’s indecisive, and he usually isn’t; it’s more like a sort of uncertainty that’s weighing on him. He thinks he what his place is in the world, but it’s a rather limited place that he actually knows he feels trapped in. He believes he has to deal with his own issues on his own, which often makes him treat them as a low priority, as well as building up a lot of repressed negative emotions that he pretends are nonexistent. Ironically, he’s a bit nosy himself. He usually does try to mind his own business, mostly because he cares or worries a little too much.

He’s not exactly shy or an introvert, and he isn’t aloof as he carries himself. He really just trying to be careful with what he says out loud. Usually, he is polite, tries being direct and rational, but sometimes, he can be rather, unintentionally, blunt. It’s probably because his dry sense of humor gets in the way.

He’s fine with just lying in his bed and listening to music while either reading a book or simply closing his eyes and appreciate the peaceful free time he’d seemed to rarely have... well, that seems more like he’s procrastinating.

history
Matteo grew up in the suburbs of the northern part of Chicago and has a very subtle accent to prove it. There’s nothing really interesting to say about his family, other than that they gave him a reason or two not to talk about them. His earliest exposure to music was from watching some musical movies, karaoke at get-together parties, and basically listening to a variety of music on the radio, TV, and YouTube. He did have after-school music training when he was young, but the lessons only lasted for a half a year because his parents weren’t able to afford any more. They made it up to him by giving him a ukulele, which he taught himself how to play because Google and YouTube exist.

He played hockey in high school until a bad knee injury made him quit during junior year, kissing his athletic scholarship goodbye, and he started working on Plan B: getting an academic scholarship, which meant lesser time on his creative hobbies. However, the last days of high school career took a toll on him. Expectations from his family didn’t help his stress, the mountain pile of homework ruined his sleep schedule, and he couldn’t maintain his honor roll grades. He was still able to graduate from high school, but his grades weren’t enough for Plan B. All that work hard for nothing.

He took a sabbatical from education for almost 2 years. He worked part-time jobs and temporary guitar gigs to save enough money to buy his own car and live on his own. After finally getting his financial aid in order, he left his hometown to go to college for the first time. Some weeks after classes began, he joined the school’s glee club for extra credit in his music-related elective class. Well, it was really more like a classmate had forced him to join to replace one of the band members that graduated recently. Matt stays in the background while playing rhythm guitar. He doesn’t consider himself much as a vocalist, but he hasn’t found a chance to prove otherwise.
