Ugh, camping, something that Skylar absolutely hated with a passion. It wasn’t his idea to do this. Never! He’ll tolerate the hell of a car ride to Wild Horse Reserve, he’ll tolerate the whole weeklong camping trip, he’ll tolerate everything having to do with this, but he will not like it. In fact, Skylar was not a fan of the outdoors. Bugs, People who might murder you in your tent, so many dangers awaiting in the forest for them. He’d rather stay inside and play on his computer or curl up with a book. Now that is something he thoroughly enjoyed doing, yes yes. Why did he have to be dragged into this?
However, Skylar didn’t want to be that stick in the mud who will ruin everyone’s fun by complaining about how he didn’t want to go, he kept his complaints to himself. Bottling them up inside and rolling with it. Alpine was coming with him; she would make it more bearable. The car ride to the reserve was going to be absolute hell though, and he was absolutely not looking forward to climbing into Grandma Mimi’s van and having to be squished in with the others. Can’t they just take separate cars to avoid buddy buckling and crushing everyone together in the seats?
His mother convinced him to go, though, telling him he would actually enjoy it and have fun. That there’s so much to do. Yeah, Skylar will just take a nap under a tree with his ferret. He’s not going to strip off his overalls and jump into a lake. He’ll sit on the ground and play with Alpine. So yeah, here’s Skylar who was currently packing his things for the camping trip, including him putting a harness and leash on Alpine. He picked up his bag with one hand, ferret in the other, and of course he had to deal with his mom telling him goodbye, to have fun, and that she loved him.
You know, just the usual things. Camping was never going to be Skylar’s thing, though. Even after this. Never has been, never will be.
“Is your phone charged?”
His mom asked. “Yes, mom, it is.” Skylar bluntly responded. Plus, he had one of those power bank chargers in his bag, along with the cord, if he ever needed to charge his phone on the go. Earbuds too because there was no way he was going to listen to whatever was on the car radio. Skylar heaved his book bag over his shoulder, his mother kissing him once more, and again telling him goodbye.
Skylar honestly doubted there would be any service out at Wild Horse Reserve, but it’s not like he’ll need to call his mother for anything. He’s going to be just fine with the others. And there was Grandma Mimi to look after them. Yes, they will all feel safe with Mimi. Goodbyes were done now, Skylar could head out the door now. Time to leave home and go into the forest.
The beautiful forest. The wide, neverending, beautiful forest.
Ferret in hand, Skylar closed the door behind him. He’ll be back home in a week. Week’s time. Of course, little did he know that he wouldn’t see his mother alive again but he didn’t know that at this very moment.
—------------------------ —------------------------
The ride was hell. Really, it was! Grandma Mimi is a crazy driver! Slow down there, grandma! Skylar rolled his head, feeling dizzy and a little car sick from the reckless, crazy driving. God, he couldn’t wait to stretch out his legs. Skylar’s head dropped back and he pursed his lips and squeezed his eyes shut. He felt cramped in his seat, trying to wriggle around for some room.
How long was it until they reached Wild Horse Reserve? The next thing Skylar knew was that he was jolted awake when the van came to a halt. Good, good. They’re here. The van door slid open, Skylar eagerly undoing the seat belt and crawling out of the van. The breeze felt good against his forehead.
Skylar stretched out his legs, heaving a hard breath as he set Alpine down on the ground, fingers wrapped around the leash. Pitching tents up who? Nah, let Skylar have his second nap of the day because apparently he dozed off in the van. They could pitch tents up later! Before it got dark of course. Who would pitch tents up as soon as they got here? Not Skylar! He wanted to sit under a tree. Good napping spot. Maybe he’ll dip his toes in the lake, just to cool off.

cyp.
Cypress has never been camping before. Maybe it’s because she sits up at night listening to horror stories that have happened to people who went camping. So when some of her friends suggested that they go camping, her heart had lurched. Camping might be a fun experience. But they’re going to have tent buddies right? Right!? What if some prowler crept onto their campsite with a butcher knife and tried to murder everyone? Thank you, Camping Horror Stories. Ah, what the heck? She’ll have Beanie with her. Grandma Mimi too, and her friends. Cypress is perfectly safe.
Well what about the bugs? The bugs that might bite you and transmit something over to you? Yikes. Cypress didn't want to think about it. Good thing she's wearing covered up clothes. Also, there’s… the lake. Gosh, the lake. No way was Cypress going in the lake. Honestly, she just wants to get cozy on a log and roast marshmallows over a campfire to make s’mores with everyone. Also, Cypress dreaded the car ride. Mostly because she would get cramped and because she feared that she might not get blood flow to her legs. There’s enough leg room in the van right? She’ll be able to move her legs right? Oh, well.
Cyp was in the midst of packing her things. Her book bag, her sensory kit which contained: gummy and crunchy snacks, fidget toys, chewlery, and a pufferfish stress ball, and there’s a stuffed wolf plush that’s tagging along with her as well. She was also chewing on the chewlery around her neck, a white shark tooth shaped chewlery just for her to chew on. Her parents had encouraged her to go, and she went with it.
Oh, oh, she can’t forget her chest binder. Tucking it in with her other clothes very gently. Welp, her things are packed, and she’s got Beanie with her. Cyp tottered out of her bedroom, Beanie right at her heels all the way as she had to say goodbye to her parents before she could leave. Cyp was in good hands, her parents wouldn’t have to worry. Grandma Mimi will look after her, and the others of course, after all. The chewlery fell out of her mouth long enough for her to utter out goodbyes and ‘i love you’s to her parents. A week away from home, no doubt Cyp will get homesick.
With that, Cyp and Beanie left the house.
—----------------- —------------------
Cyp’s leg bounced for most of the car ride to Wild Horse Reserve. Her fingers fidgeted with Beanie’s lemon printed collar as the terrier napped on Cyp’s lap. The shark tooth chewy was squished between her teeth and she chewed on it for most of the way there. Damn, why is Grandma Mimi so… reckless on the road? Is that the right way to describe it?
She bounced in her seat from the rocks and bumps in the road. Cyp also did her best to move her legs and wriggle around in her seat the best she could. She was actually pretty lucky to be on the end of the seat, letting her slide her legs somewhat out. But still, at least she wasn’t crushed in.
Finally, the car had come to a stop. They were finally at the campsite! Cypress undid her seat belt and she set Beanie on the floor of the car before easing her way out and hopping to the ground. Ah, fresh air! Cypress hopped in excitement as she looked around at her surroundings. There was so much to do that would take her mind off of being away from home.

otto.
Wooooo, camping! Fuck yeah! Otto might be too excited for his own good but could you really blame him? One whole week of camping with friends and Grandma Mimi! Ripley was coming along too, and no doubt she might splash herself into the lake. Otto might take a nice dip into the lake as well, not exactly swimming but wading. He also looked forward to marshmallows and s’mores, and settling down in a tent with whoever was going to be his tent buddy. Otto wondered who he was going to tent with. As long as they didn’t mind Ripley, then everything should be just fine.
Currently, Otto was beaming with excitement as he zipped up his chest binder and began to slip on the outfit he had picked out for today. Fingers carded their way through soft, fluffy dark raven colored hair and pulled it back to let him tie it up into a short ponytail. Otto found himself a mirror and he picked at his appearance, pulling at the sleeves of the gray jacket.
Otto's nose wrinkled as he began to pick at his hair. His wild hair. Did it look good enough? Did he curl it enough? Eh, whatever. It'll get all wild again soon enough and where's he going to find an outlet in the middle of the forest? Okay, he's done with the mirror. Time to head downstairs with his bag. He's bringing the ingredients for s'mores. Hopefully the bumpy car ride doesn't cause the graham crackers to break.
His mother came up to tell him goodbye and that she would see him in a week. A week. It made drag on forever even if everyone is having fun. Now, if there was service, Otto would text his mom if he needed anything. Ah yes, another tight hit from mother. Otto will have fun. There's so much to do, so many things to keep him occupied. Boredom tends to set in quickly for Otto so he really needed something to keep him occupied.
The car ride is going to bore him for sure. He hates long car rides. With Ripley's leash in hand, he headed out the door to climb into Grandma Mimi's van.
------------ --------------
Otto grunted at each bump and at each jolt. It truly was a bumpy car ride. Ripley was laying on the floor, a little squished. Way too many people for just one van. And Mimi's driving did not seem to help at all. Please Grandma Mimi, drive slow. Drive gently. Otto hated the dizzy, fuzzy feeling that overcame him during the ride to the reserve.
He tilted his head back, hoping the feeling would pass. But when you're crammed in between two others, it really is hard to relax. And Otto never expected Grandma Mimi to drive so… crazily.
After a while, the van came to a complete halt, making Otto leaned forward against his seat belt. FINALLY. FREEDOM. Otto grabbed hold of Ripley's leash and began to inch his way out of the van. Ripley began to sniff along the ground, and Otto unhooked her leash. Ripley was good about not going too far so he didn't have to worry about her.
Now, what should be done first?
