8000 years before the story of Tower of Trials, a perpetual war has existed for the past two hundred years and continues to ravage the lands. The dwarves fight from the depths, the humans from the plains, the elves from the forests and the orcs from the deserts and steppes. Some clans consisting of mixed species or outcasts of different species manage to exist within and outside of the war. But the war has reached levels that has awakened the attention of deities, especially Arura, the goddess of peace and prosperity and her children.

Despite the goddess of peace and prosperity's best efforts with visions, prophets and other miracles, an end to the perpetual war seems to not be in sight. Her children chose sides to try to end the war by influencing an individual side, but soon grew disenchanted by the hate and rage that fuelled the combatants. To prevent the sentient species of the world from murdering each other into extinction, the goddess made the artifacts out of her children out of desperation. The worldender orb was created from her daughter to create a being able to end the war, for better or for worse. And the lifeline of the world pendant out of her son, to make a being who could keep the other in check to prevent worse outcomes. But both artifacts come with conditions and grim sacrifices. These curses come from the flaws of Arura's children. The orb can only be absorbed by those pure of heart and strong in will. Any others would revert to a beast like form and die within a few days. The orb's sacrifice is sacrificing the users humanity, turning them into a carnivorous monster who may seem human enough on the outside and may be able to retain human behavior and intelligence, but will have a seemingly unsatiable desire for fresh meat and blood and in turn become stronger until they basically become unstoppable.

Setting: You begin in a small town nestled deep in the mountains. The valley is green but the surrounding areas are snowy. The town consists of not a single species but of a number of individuals from all sentient species, many being refugees or descendants of refugees. They have managed to stay out of the fighting so far, but many fear that the fighting will someday will come to them. Until then, they hope to be able to live peacefully without hardship.

Technology: Medieval fantasy-ish with more tribal elements. Magic is less complex than in later eras. Buildings are often houses with thatched roofs, stone or clay fortresses and clay or sandstone palaces and temples.
