Dice War of Despair (Exalted 3e) - Characters

  • Cleon Narsis
    Concept: Mercenary commander/tactician
    Dawn Caste

The Diamond Hounds were originally a mercenary company taking advantage of the strife in the Hundred Kingdoms, switching from one paymaster to another as opportunity arose, helmed by Farrel Narsis, Cleon's father.

Then his father took an arrow in the throat, and Cleon, battle-experienced but new to command, was questionably regarded by his lieutenants. Facing them down, he began to speak... and then a glorious flash of sun gave him determination and vision.

When he was done, they were agog, as Cleon had dissected their habits and failings, and vowed to make them far greater a force on the battlefield. Through his iron discipline, the Diamond Hounds were honed into an elite force, and Cleon made them in demand throughout the Scavenger Lands as a force to be reckoned with - one that deserved its place in Nexus' hiring halls.

Then the Deathlords swept in, and the Houds found themselves augmented by the leavings of other scattered mercenaries and soldiers. Numbering over 300, Cleon led them towards the west, plotting as to how to create a mighty army that could challenge the pestilent dead.

Soon, he encountered fellow Solar Ozric Vold, and a deal was struck.

  • Ozric Vold
    Concept: Sorcerer King
    Caste: Twilight
Sobriquets: Sorcerer King, Scavenger King, Spirit Speaker, Ghost Fist, Binder

Ozric Vold is a man of ambition, few can deny that. He appeared out of the North, seemingly choosing to flee the antics of the Bull rather than join his cause. Many whisper that Vold is an escaped slave, one trained for academic pursuits as a sorcerous assistant. It is true though Vold rarely discusses his past or the experiences that have molded him into the man who calls himself a Sorcerer King. His Second Breath was said to have been earned in a game of riddles with a Raksha Lord whom held Vold for a time as a plaything and gift from his previous Dynast master in return for occult knowledge. Vold managed to win his freedom and his life in that game, the Raksha Lord having bound itself in oath to the game's outcome.

It would go some way to explaining Vold's curious nature at times. He does not hide that he experiences curious prophetic dreams born of the Wyld energies within his mind. The Wyld holds little power over his flesh now and he seems to savor powerful emotions at times in his presence. His dreams and the will of something more powerful has guided him to the Riverlands. He used his new powers and more so knowledge of occult affairs to grow into a wealthy and influential Scavenger Lord. His accumulation of wealth so great he purchased claims to a great swath of land in the Hundred Kingdoms and built a impressive sorcerous castle to reside within.

The local rulers were reluctant to recognize a self-proclaimed king of what was seemingly empty land. However, they could not deny a man who was willing to play court wizard for them at times. Vold forged his power on knowledge and ability. The rulers of the Hundred Kingdoms gave into his seemingly eccentric demand to be recognized as Sorcerer King or Scavenger King by those who would deride him more as an upstart.

When the dead came, Vold was forced to call up many Demons and Elementals to protect his holdings. Many of them perished as well admittedly, forcing him to cast about desperately for mercenary companies willing to work with him to save his lands. So many other lands have fallen, but Vold now seems determined to turn his lands into a refuge against the Undead. Opportunistic but also necessary to rally survivors and soldiers to repel the agents of Oblivion.

So far, Vold has managed to find curiously enough allies in other Solars that have appeared, two of which control hosts of troops he is more than happy to compensate and give shelter to. To him, this is simply the next phase of his dreams that call for him to raise up a mighty kingdom to throw down the undead.

    Caste
    -Zenith

    Backstory
Lumen Magna, the Knight of Solerus, is a knight-errant from the very edges of the Scavenger Lands. His village, whose name has been lost to the annals of history, was always protected by a renegade Exalted knight who the villagers worshipped as a local deity and named the Knight of Solerus, which means 'knight of the sun' in their native tongue. On the day his village was destroyed, the previous Knight, known only as Solaire, stood alone facing a horde of the undead. Lumen alone moved to join him, and the Knight welcomed the help. He turned to Lumen, slammed his daiklaive into the earth, and shouted "We will crush the hungry dead with martial skill and jolly cooperation! NOW CHARGE!" With that final deafening roar, Lumen and the Knight charged headlong into the ranks of the foe, smashing aside the undead with blow after blow. The battle raged and raged, but in the end Solaire was mortally wounded. As Solaire lay bleeding on the ground, he looked to Lumen and gasped out "I...i-i pass the light unt-to you." With that, Solaire died, and Lumen was suddenly struck with a vision of the Unconquered Sun. In his mind, he heard a voice: "This is just the beginning of the terror. Your duty is no longer only to the people of your village, but to all of Creation. You have been given your duty, and it is your life now to see that duty to the end."

Ever since that day, Lumen, now the Knight of Solerus, has led his people from place to place, never settling, but always rescuing the survivors of the undead attacks. And day after day, battle after battle, Lumen seeks the voice and light he saw within himself, so that he may become one with his own Unconquerable Sun, and fulfill his duty to Creation.
